why this thing has so many rabid loyal drones who take any criticism as a personal insult? are they being paid by wotc to defend it? there's no other reason to defend such a piece of shit system
>>
>>98619159
A better system just hasn't come along to replace it in the mainstream
And no, pathfinder and draw steel are not the answer
>>
>bad faith troll wonders why his obvious agenda-oriented shitposting he pretends is just innocent criticism about the most popular RPG he targets specifically just so he might receive the attention he's desperate to get might be received negatively
Gee I dunno.
>>
>>98619163
lol, bait used to be believable
>>
>>98619159
The system unironically works and has the networking effect (yes that is a term) working to allow for games to be easily had. This is a self serving cycle for DnD.
That said there are other systems that do some things DnDon't.
I'm pretty sure DnD is at it's best when it is used for medieval-renaissance era fantasy.

If you really hate DnD 5e you can take comfort in that because it may as well be the face of the TTRPG medium where 40k is the face of the Wargaming medium, it catches a lot of trend chasing "tourists" and serves as a net where genuine newcomers to the medium get through to the more niche stuff.
But at the end of the day a game is best when it is with friends and if DnD works then it does.
>>
>>98619159
Because it makes contrarians like (you) seethe and mald, and anyone who says D&D is anything more or less than painfully average is a lying faggot.
>>
>>98619159
>why this thing has so many rabid loyal drones who take any criticism as a personal insult
That's not pathfinder. Seriously though, no it fucking doesn't. Even the most basic reddit fans of it don't act like that about it. The biggest, most devout fans of the system? No one fucks with, hacks, homebrews, or house rules the system more than them. It's like coffee, where hardly anyone likes it black, most need to add a lot of shit to it.

It's the fucking coca cola of TTRPGs. Even if you never order it, it's on every menu. If it weren't the default backup choice then something else would be, and that something else would probably be almost identical. Is it actually good? Probably no one says so without a huge asterisk that leads to an essay about what they personally would or do change or their list of complaints.

You though, OP, are doing that tourist thing where you know a thing is complained about here but because you don't fucking play TTRPGs you don't know why and assume it's because of the fans or some shit. You made up a fucking boogeyman to make a thread about. Nah. The people who for whatever reason actually love DnD complain about it more than anyone else. It's that kind of shit.

People hate it because it's the default, it's not the best, and they'd rather play something else but struggle to get people to join them. And people would more often preter the thing they know over learning a new system. And that's really fucking annoying.
>>
>>98619275
>The system unironically works
Lol
Lmao even
>I'm pretty sure DnD is at it's best when it is used for medieval-renaissance era fantasy.
DnD is not medieval. Is just california with horses. Nothing of what happens in the game world represents the medieval or the renaissance world. One of the many reasons of why is shit.
>>
>>98619159
Since it's 90% of everything it's hard not

Ok maybe I can find a Pathfinder game in a week. Or maybe in a month I can find a game of some other system.

But if I want a game that has any sort of specifics......no. That's not happening. The only way I will get my bisexual furry fetish RPG experience is in a DND 5e system. And I've already been kicked out of two different groups in session zero for complaining about how crappy the system is.
>>
>>98619421
>Is just california with horses.
it's wild when you retards let your obsessive political boogeyman memes warp into unrecognizable shapes like this. There's nothing "california" about anything in DnD. Everyone complains about the system because of how it sucks mechanically. Not because it's being infiltrated by the gay agenda or shit like that. That's a splash of garrish paint over a shitstained pig. You're upset over the paint. But everyone here hated the pig to begin with. No recent rebranding by a feminist spiderweb on the barn door is going to make the pig stink less. Fuck off.

that's the bucket of paint on the pig I mentioned though. Well done not reading the shit you replied to and looking like even more of a retard for it.

> The system unironically works
Not the way I’ve seen normies okay it. So many different contortions to make the game simpler and simpler, none of them can be assed to remember how to actually play the damn game or even remember what the dice do, and yet they’ll refuse to play anything else. Even objectively simpler shit like TWERPS. I genuinely don’t get it some days.
>>
>>98619488
You're both right though. How many barista and night market adventures so far?
>>
>>98619506
I think that's part of the point. Even with people cutting pieces off of it or changing shit it still mostly works. Like hardly anyone doesn't modify it, which is testament to how it sucks in general, but it's structurally sound enough to be that flexible in a mechanical way.
>>
>>98619421
>>98619506
I should have said that I didn't say it works well. My bad lads.
But I get your feelings towards it.
>TWERPS
I thought this was a negative slang for GURPS.
Color me impressed.
>world's easiest roleplaying game
I mean I am a retard who had trouble memorizing the Dnd 5e system, because I shot my attention span thoroughly and I have to get it back somehow.
I fear not being to work with TWERPs.
Thank you for mentioning TWERPs.

How is TWERPS vs Mini Six vs Basic Roleplaying Universal Game Engine vs Genesys?
GURPS is said to be complicated but if it really isn't then I don't mind it being compared too.
>>
>>98619506
>>98619538
That's the benefit of 5e/2024, it's the Skyrim of TTRPGs. Except somehow, it works better than anything Todd has put out in the last 2 and a half decades. You can mod it, you can add on to it, and it's going to keep working because the mechanics are simple. Obviously, if you want something that isn't medieval fantasy or something that is more complex, play another game, but between its ease of homebrew/hoseruling and the fact there's online resources to make running it and prepping for it as a GM super easy and fast, it's a good system for casual play of generic fantasy.
>>
>>98619159
That's not 40K, retard. D&Drones seem measured and reasonable compared to your average Warhammer cumguzzler
>>
>>98619531
NTA but none, the barista thing is like... a one-off from an MTG module. Strixhaven, if I recall.

If you want an actual representation of what a 5e/2024 adventure looks like, check out Lost Mines of Phandelver or its remake Phandelver and below, or Dragons of Icespire peak (the starter set adventure).

The former has an encounter with hidden goblin archers as its FIRST ENCOUNTER which can easily TPK even the hardiest party with some good luck. The latter has a FUCKING MANTICORE AS AN OPTION FOR A LEVEL 1 PARTY TO ENCOUNTER, with another option having some sort of oozes or jellies followed up by orcs that, when I ran it, killed a Level 2 Paladin with most of his resources left. Like that motherfucker got mauled to death by crits.

No baristas, no night market whatevers (Though I don't see why that's an issue? Why would sneaking out to go to a black market at night be "californian" or whatever?).
>>
>>98619436
Skill issue, I can easily get my friends to run or play other stuff, mostly homebrew, and at this point it's at least 50% my own homebrew systems I wrote from the ground up.
>>
d&d is probably the most performative ttrpg out there
>>

Like for what it’s worth, I don’t out and out hate D&D. But the way people talk about it baffles me because you would think they hate it for how little effort they put into actually learning and playing it to the point if actively avoiding doing so, yet they stick to it like glue at the thought of playing anything different. Shit just confuses me.

>>98619544
For what it’s worth, I namedropped TWERPS specifically because it has one single stat. Used for everything. Character classes give numerical stats to particular actions and circumstances, but otherwise you know what you’re rolling for every time. Strength. Cause it’s the only attribute to keep track of.

> How is TWERPS vs Mini Six vs Basic Roleplaying Universal Game Engine vs Genesys?
You’d be better pressed to ask someone knowledgeable, but most of those systems are just more functional on a base level and far more modular for it. TWERPS is as simple as it gets, you’d have to play Risus to get simpler than that.
>>
>>98619575
>never said it was.
I accept your concession.
>>
>>98619551
I know that's how most people use it too. My first TTRPG was a hacked together homebrewed to hell Fallout game. Most of what my main group plays are the most random systems and homebrewed shit, and we're always taking turns DMing. But still we have short games between bigger campaigns that are just DnD because it's the easiest one to just throw a game together for.
>>
>>98619587
wow you sure talk gay for a /pol/fag.
>>
>>98619581
>TWERPS is as simple as it gets, you’d have to play Risus to get simpler than that.
Fair enough then.
Thank you kindly for mentioning TWERPS. The name is simple and silly and might be nice to show up with the lads to give it a shot on the humorous name of the system alone.
My biggest hopes are that Mini Six and BRP are the real actual good and fun ones to stick with forever.
With genesys as well if it turns out blank dice with the proprietary dice designs as decals on them actually works wonders instead of stickers.
>>
>>98619590
Like IMO it's fitting 5e is 5e because it's a solid 5 out of 10, it's not great, it's not dogshit, it's average and everything else is either better than it or worse than it, and I've run and played both. If you understand 5e does one thing specifically rather well and you don't use it for fucking everything ever, it's fine.

I guess my experience has been so divorced from it as "the only game anyone ever plays" (The game I'm in now is the first D&D game I've been in for at least 5 years now if not longer and even that is full of my own overhauls to the system and classes basically backported from my own original system in a lot of respects that the GM approved of) that I don't know where /tg/ gets this idea from. Surely there are discord servers dedicated to older or obscure games. Surely their friends have some experience with non-D&D TTRPGs.
>>
>>98619607
Heard good things about BRP.
You might need to get used to the special Duce fir Genysys, but it’s also good.
There’s a thread up atm regarding Mini six you can check out
>>98346494

And you’re welcome on TWERPS. It has supplements if you ever want to pull the game out more than once to give it a little extra goofy spin too.

>gays and baristas
you guys need to update your memes, it's like the words that trigger the neurons in your brain for "california" always end up being northwest shit. It hasn't been the big place for gays, or anyone, in like 15 years.

An actual california game would be fighting off waves of homeless zombies in an awful heatwave to find a mythical burger place that turns out to be extremely average and overpriced.
>>
>>98619660
I'm sure the voices in your head saying it is will get quieter if you keep screaming about gay frogs.
>>
>>98619677
Never talked about gays?
>>
>>98619695
the conversation was about california creating gays and you replied with "barista". So that's on you making those connections.
>>
>Le DnD is california because of these pieces of art that have no bearing on the rules or way you play what so ever.

I've been to California. Those don't even LOOK like California. So these retards are doubly wrong. Not only did you guys fail the Int check (what is California), the Wisdom check (can I play DnD how I want if there is art of gay elves), but you also failed the Charisma check (come up with a good insult). God no wonder you all play human fighters. Your mental stats are negative modifiers.
>>
>>98619159
Stating your garbage as a question implies that the statement is true and makes the targets consider it as true and make up reasons why it may be true, while in reality it's still absurd garbage. Every thread starting with "why" is garbage. On every board.
>>
>>98619159
most people were groomed into it from their rpg infancy so they are bound to have positive feelings about it even if the game mechanically sucked simply due to the novelty of the experience and the sheer fun and wonder it provided, not because 5e is some stellar rpg but because rpgs are fun.
If you have fun with something you dont want to change it or let it go.
Combine that with the modern era where your identity is severely tied to the things you like and then heavily monetised and turned insular and this is how you get dnddrones
It is also the same way you get 40k drones or mtg drones.

Most of the 5e haters are people that started with 5e and abandoned it were those who for either internal or external reasons, meaning their group sucked or the game didnt do what they wanted or were expecting and then found something else and they had to define themselves with how much they dislike 5e or performative contrarians mostly and maybe the occasional oldfag that was forced to play in a 5e game and hated it.

Sunk cost fallacy, accessibility (tools that integrate 5e rules, SRD), a game system that heavily leans to player facing content (which foster fidelisation at playerbase level, which trump by sheer numbers the game masters numbers), mainstream recognition (historical, vidya, pop culture, actual plays, CR).
Also most of casualets are in for playing DeeNDee specifically, not ttrpgs as whole, effectively d&d is an hobby on its own.
>>

No I was replying to California with horses. It's California because it's a bustling multi cultural society riff with street food culture. Hence the barista and night market question.

>>98620752
baristas mean coffee not street food, the word makes people think off Seattle not LA. And none of that other shit describes california at all. California has terrible street food culture, almost a lack of it, because no on there walks anywhere. It's hardly bustling because everyone is stuck in traffic. They insist they have a great food culture, but they were just ahead of a millennial trend for popups, not street food,15 years ago and are now behind and haven't realized. And even small midwest cities are just as multicultural.

You're describing new york not any significant part of California. The other anon is right, psychosis is the right word for this.

5e D&D, especially as played by the people who are the approved "face" of the hobby, looks like fucking Strixhaven. Everyone has magic powers and is a modern/contemporary university student with a modern alt haircut and facial piercings who's le-heck-n queer and also a furry.

When everyone is alt, no one is. When everyone is queer, its not stunning or brave, it's just fucking gay.
>>
>>98619159
Lots of reasons. One that I don't see mentioned very often is progressive complexity. At level 1, the game is extraordinarily easy to understand for anyone. There are no variables, nothing to remember, and all the things you can do are very very basic. Then complexity gets tacked on as you level. Unless the DM levels you way too fast or throws an extraordinary number of magical items at the party, that extra level of complexity will not overwhelm you. Some systems are way more complicated, fair and functional, but they're more complex right at the start. The entry to start playing it is much higher, which exhausts people who haven't played before.
>>
>>98621053
Pretty much. Watching someone ask “how do you roll for attack” after just doing it minutes ago, repeatedly, is genuinely confounding.
>>
>>98619159
1. TTRPGs are the only "nerd" hobby with the monopoly that dire and normalfags always flock to big brands (40k is alike, but it is more like a media franchise now than a game, so it is not the same). What is the point of playing if then you can't tell people that you were totally a horny bard? You also now can watch TikTok and understand all these memes where the title "Tabaxi rogue" is written under a cat video. Previously, only "Khajiit rogue" was funny. But now you are a total nerd and get it.
2. TTRPGs are the only hobby you can play without reading or even knowing the rules. The prospect of actually engaging with the rules and not just using an online database is abysmal for a regular normalfag, even if it means "rules can be learnt in 15 minutes of the session zero".
3. It is simply a bad product. Something important for nerd-rejects who can claim mastery of the system or something like that while being too stupid to play board games or video games competitively.
Also, this >>98619568 and this >>98620171

So, yeah, the hobby that mostly relies on in-person communication suffers the most from how much of a cattle people are. The situation is so dire you need to use food and movie analogies like "Coca-Cola" or "Avengers" to explain to people that the adult game of pretend doesn't require a certain brand.

DnD only people are retards but you have to understand that people invest hundreds/thousands of dollars and hours into games they like so they're going to have a defensive reaction if you attack them.

I think it also doesn't help that evangelists for other games are extremely annoying. There's always a dude making a drive-by comment screaming at you to play GURPS without explaining why it's good(like the equivalent of BBC spammers on 4chan). Or how every Warhammer rival has to stress about how they're a cool manly competitive game here to finally overthrow 40K.

They are the answer, though, anon. You don't have to like that fact, but it remains a fact regardless. If you just don't like sword-and-sorcery dungeonpunk, that's ok. >>
>>98619159
Those "rabid loyal drones" have simply compartmentalised the brand where a normie would put his favorite sportsball team.
I know it's a gross over-simplification, but that's what it is. A D&D geek captured by the brand will defend his favorite edition as a "good system" and think less of anyone who disagrees because his "team" is the brand.
