Jace is, in theory, cool. His design is cool, his introduction was cool, his powers are obviously cool. But he suffers from the same 20 years of bad writing all the other nuwalkers suffer from. Ironically, casual fans probably get a better impression of him than people who actually follow the lore, because they're JUST seeing his cool art and spells and the only major cringe they get out of him is flavor text.

There's not a lot of ways to really show off cool psychic powers that doesn't involve DBZ style energy ball/beams I suppose.

No it's just the default now. And yes it certainly correlates to the game losing its dignity, cohesion, and being powercrept to fucking shit. WoTC have wiped their ass with the game and asked us to kiss it.

Maro in particular is the worst. A slave and s slavemaster. A pathetic little man who has gone back on everything he ever said. He pisses on the color pie then tells us to eat it. Fuck Maro. Fuck WoTC. Fuck MtG. Fuck Commander. Fuck Pre-modern. Fuck Brasil. Fuck that witch. Play cube.

Is Pre-Fire Modern fun, or just dead and unplayed? Premodern is just... I started playing around Guilds and loved the game up until roughly... idk VOW was pretty okay and I didn't HATE Eldraine it was just... ... ... yeah... I thought it was marginally better a set than WAR which I still fucking despise, even if I like some of the cards.
Point being, Premodern isn't the era and gameplay of magic I love. I want my goyfs and my preordains and my planeswalkers and shit... the stuff from Magic I loved... but it just generally seems like the 2005-2019 era just doesn't have enough sway to get the same playerbase as Premodern or Coomander...
shit dude I just want a reason to sleeve up Vampire Nighthawks in 2026.

There's no sort of clever application when your MC is a master of illusion magic, telepathy, and mind control. He starts the story powerscaled through the roof to the point he tries to mind control Bolas because up until that point he has no reason to believe it won't work. He does the same thing with Emrakul and the only reason that he "fails" is because she already wanted to go in the moon for some reason. Half of his time in the story is spent giving him amnesia just so he doesn't remember he can mind crush anyone that displeases him even slightly. Basically every conflict involving Jace has to start with him being unable or unwilling to just mind control his opposition which destroys the whole point of giving him said powers in the first place. It's quite literally like if JJK tried to make Gojo the protagonist then wondered why nobody latched onto their hype moments and aura when the story is nothing but an endless series of curbstomps they ask you to take seriously.

I don't disagree and is a matter of shit writing giving a main character an instant win button and having to dance around why they can't use it.

I think Jace would have been more interesting if he wasn't so "powerful" and had to make clever use of illusion and psychic powers.

I mean, they have hexhaven where the school involved with future stuff literally uses divination as a weapon so I'm sure you can still do cool stuff with it and not make it OP.

Kind of a basic rules question: If a card says "Target player sacrifices target creature" is there anything in the rules that prevents this card from making sense? I feel like a sorcery that says "target player sacrifices target permanent" could destroy anything but idk if that's gibberish because this game is opaque
>>
>>98628454
A lack of bullying towards tcg players. You cunts lost actual real world problems to contend with and so one day for no reason at all you woke up and decided that you’d create problems and became trans. You tranny faggots ruined your own game by being weak freaks.
>>
>>98628754
> is there anything in the rules that prevents this card from making sense?
No, but sacrifice effect are useful because they can go around hexproof/protection a thing that this card wouldn't do since hexproof/protection prevent targeting. The only thing this card would kill that your average "destroy target creature" spell wouldn't is an indestructible creature.
>>
>>98628454
Unironically the lockdowns. While FIRE design is suspect, people still went to their locals to play 60 card 1v1, and the competitive support wasnt garbage pre-2020. Covid came and went and everything went to shit after that
>>
>>98628754
>this game is opaque
It is most assuredly not. Magic has one of the most unambiguous rulesets of any board game, card game, or TTRPG. The comprehensive rules are publicly available and are organized in a logical and straightforward way. You are probably just retarded.

>target player sacrifices target permanent
This would work if you tossed in a 'they control' at the end. Players can only sacrifice permanents they control. As written you could target yourself and a mountain controlled by your opponent.

>could destroy anything
If either the player or the permanent have hexproof or protection it could not. The big advantage of 'sacrifice' is that it gets past hexproof, protection and most other common forms of protective abilities. Ashling, the Extinguisher and Council's Judgement are the two cards I can think of off the top of my head that are most similar to your hypothetical card.
>>

Cummander and cummander faggots, Walking Dead was the beginning of the end and we didn't react, now they are in control and the game, the Magic The Gathering game is slowly dying and being replaced by some sort of huge advertisement-tabletop game made for fucking casuals.
>>
>>98628865
Walking Dead was 2020 while the first Commander precons were in 2011 and they became an annual release after 2013. I don't think that WD can be 'the beginning of the end' if you are saying commander players are the problem and JotC had pivoted to annual commander releases 7 years prior.

Yeah it's kinda lame, but you'd think there should be ways to combat mind control in the MtG universe. Zombies, golems/constructs, spirits, possibly elementals don't have living brains for Jace to control. Simply catching him in a crowd might also work, too many minds to single out one or several assassins.

Too bad, every fifth year is now going to have all the in-universe sets be Strixhaven related so they can tell the Hasbro executive that they've "already got magic school at home". It's the only salient argument they can construct against releasing crossover product for a top five entertainment brand in the world, since Rosewater's many manifestos so thoroughly demonstrated that disgruntled players quitting over objections to company policy means nothing in the fact of more players more sales being a maximal good.

It's the opposite, strix has been printed to oblivion a million times as an uncommon and rare, the retard jewin and his personal cocksuckers (the pfp) wants his format to be just retards slinging chrysalis and refurbished at each other for 20 turns and it has been this was since mh3 since no powerful non-midrange card is allowed in the format, now he was forced by both the community and very likely wotc to let this through as it would go against the rules of the format to do so, he had initially announced the rules would not be changed and clearly wotc didn't want to.

Wouldn't they have their inverted philosophy?
WU-Peace through knowledge Rather than perfecting society using laws they achieve peace by teaching religion to the masses.
UB- Perfection through ruthlessness Rather than using information to gain advantages they seek perfection by becoming ruthless corporate elites
BR- Power through action Rather than enjoying freedom through ruthless acts they gain power by training
RG- Freedom through acceptance Rather than actively growing natures bounds they seeking freedom by exploring their bodily autonomy
GW- Growth through structure Rather than maintaining peace by acceptance of all they maintain growth by constantly restructuring society through social activism
WB- Peace through ruthlessness Rather than maintaining power by exploiting the structure of a church they maintain peace through ruthless tyranny, propagandizing the masses from revolting.
UR- Perfection through action Rather than gaining freedom through inventions they seek perfection by actively trying to attain it through seminars
BG- Power through acceptance Rather than growing crops from the decay of their exploits they seek power by using their natural abilities.
RW- Freedom through structure Rather than maintaining peace through military action they seek freedom through religious structure.
GU- Growth through knowledge Rather than seeking perfection by changing their bodies to an ideal self they grow their organization using knowledge of the plane's metaphysics.

if you don't want to spend a lot of money right away, you can start with a rental service to try a bunch of decks until you find one that you like
if you don't like the idea of renting, focus on building one deck at a time, if you try to spread out too much you'll end up with a bunch of unplayable decks

pauper on mtgo costs as much as legacy, play on endstep.cc or xmage if you want to try it out, use mtgo only if you want to grind leagues/challenges or you want to to improve you skill by playing vs grinders on on demand tournaments.

no. once you enter the damage step, all damage is assigned. creatures with more damaged marked on them than their toughness die as a state based action

You don't block actually block "as a band," banding on defense just werks. In fact, the damage assignment portion of banding doesn't even rely on a creature necessarily being in a band during an attack, either. If you attack with a bander and another creature separately but a non-banding creature that can block at least two creatures blocks both of them, you get to assign all damage even though you didn't declare a band.

tf do you think Magic story is about? The last time something of consequence happened was the entire Weatherlight crew getting fridged in the dumbest way possible. Since then WotC has kept the story in perpetual status quo. Bolas has died THREE TIMES and they brought him back again. They aren't even willing to say the villains are dead anymore because everyone knows they're just going to come back.
>>
Summary time. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/reality-fracture-episode-6-the-man-who-kills-his-own-ambition
>Tam's ascending to the Theorist's office, looking out and seeing mage hunters going out down below and wondering what of Jace's self-hatred led to that
>She thinks of Vraska's advice and thinks of what she DOES want to save, which gives her resolve to face the Theorist proper
>She enters, he asks how Innistrad was, she says it was unnerving, which causes him to remark it's not really worth saving
>There's an awkward silence as she waits for him to say ANYTHING
>Eventually he does, saying it felt weird to fight without holding anything back, how easy it was
>Tam then asks where's the Echoverse versions of her friends, Jace says the creation process is autonomous, some things haven't been made yet, or may have been skipped
>She asks "okay, what happens to them when the verse combine"
>He asks why she's asking, and tries to peek in on her mind which she immediately rejects and tells him to not go where he's not invited
>He did see enough to know she spoke to Emrakul though
>He asks how, ignoring her anger at his intrusion
>He asks if she recognised Tam, but Tam says no, she wanted Tam to show Emmy she was a friend
>Theorist does smile at remembering the chess match he played with Emmy back when
>Tam asks if the Eldrazi will also be overwritten then, and Theorist explains the Eldrazi, Phyrexia and Bolas just don't exist in this Multiverse, and asks why Tam's worried about a world-ender's life
>She gets angry, finally, saying she's worried about her friends, and asks why they have to be overwritten, what about his friends, or Loot, or Vraska?
>Then she's immediately smacked to the ground telepathically, sent blind
>He says that's enough, she tries to struggle and fight back, asks what he's trying to prove
>>
>>98636440
>She manages to stand and get her psychic defenses enough to talk, and asks how many times they've fought and how many times he's mindwiped her, while sharing a memory Jace shared with her, of him facing Alhammaret
>This gives him pause, and she declares she won't help him anymore...
>And oop, time for another 'aberration' within the Theorist
>This time it's the part of Jace that doesn't care, the hopeless one from moments before he used the Sylex, the Nihilist
>Nihilist Jace is a gaunt mess, most of the way to compleation, though he just sort of looks around
>Theorist is on a table now, going through a vision, and Nihilist says Tam should watch too
>In the vision, she sees the Echoverse from his perspective
>The Echoverse, to put it simply, isn't working, it's coming apart at the seams, HE'S coming apart at the seams
>She pulls out of the vision and Nihilist Jace says they've doomed existence now, explaining the Echoverse is already tearing away at the Multiverse
>Theorist thinks it'll be painless, but the math says otherwise and he knows it
>Nihilist turns to Tam, saying there's no future when a rudder thinks it's the whole boat, and their death and life will have meant nothing
>He puts a hand on her shoulder and tells her she can't win

Ironically, the force with which they're hammering away at "Jace is going to die" makes me increasingly suspicious of the likelihood that Jace will actually die.

Loot's life is the main reason Jace hasn't erased the multiverse yet.
>>
>>98636500
>She gets into a more emotional tirade, saying that he didn't even TRY to beat them three times, he's a coward, she hates him, he's her friend, he's smarter than any of them and he knows it and hates that he knows it, and she respected THAT Jace, and that's the Jace she wants to have as a friend, and that Jace has to be in there, somewhere, so they have to find a Jace to help them
>She gets to crying too, mostly out of anger
>And then Chandra's voice is behind them, agreeing that they can't beat him, and hey it's Echo Chandra
>And it's cold as hell
>Echo-Chandra says "dad says hi" and then sends icicles at the group
>Chandra leaps out of the office window, lands in a heap but adrenaline keeps her going
>She tries to move but is soon frozen in place, and Echo-Chandra falls gracefully behind her
>Chandra sees the Consulate symbol on her duplicate's arm and wonders why she is the way she is
>The rest of the group also went out the window, all in a heap around her
>She figures out pretty quick Echo-Chandra is her if her dad didn't die, then yells at Jace that for as nonsuffering as it's meant to be, her double is still pissed
>Other doubles of the group all approach
>Echo-Ajani Chandra surmises is Ajani without mercy, Garruk figures out his double embraced the Chain Veil
>Vraska immediately yells at the group to close their eyes, which they do before her double can petrify them
>Vraska tries to coach Chandra where to blast fire to stop that one
>A couple attempts as Ajani and Garruk fight their doubles, then Vraska realises her copy ISN'T petrifying
>Vraska sees her double, wide-eyed and looking pleased with herself, and realises that the big difference here is her double can't petrify
>Echo-Vraska reassures Vraska she's NOT Jace's replacement lover at least, she's just his architect
>Echo-Vraska points at a statue of the Theorist and brings it to life, holding onto its cloak
>>
>>98636440
>Liliana Blanco is able to subdue Chandra, Vraska and Garruk all by herself over and over but she eventually gets bored and just leaves because she knows they can't actually win

>Echo-Vraska taunts her, saying the reason she's better is because she never knew a cage
>Vraska calls her an impotent gorgon, and the statue lifts up Chandra as well
>Echo-Vraska asks if he'd like her to crush that one, but Jace's thoughts immediately say "No she's a friend"
>To which Chandra asks "Am I?"
>Theorist's voice responds "Were you to me?"
>And the real Theorist appears, and Vraska asks if he chose this insult of her deliberately, he says no, this place makes on its own
>Theorist pleads with Vraska to give up, she's his dearest and no double could ever replace her
>She just says to give her back Beleren
>He's about to say something when Echo-Vraska laughs, saying Vraska's like a battered cat, shut in too many cages
>So the statue pins her down, keeping her in an enclosed space and uh-oh trauma
>That doesn't last long before the Theorist opens a portal and tosses them through it
>Back to Tam, rushing to her dorm, spirits lifted by the fact she fought back against the Theorist
>She evades some enforcers and who I assume is meant to be Echo-Ral
>She gets back to her dorm and goes over three things: One, her memory has been tampered with, two, he cannot be reasoned with and will almost certainly doom existence, three, she CAN counter him
>She's internally chiding herself for not seeing all the problems beforehand, but also acknowledging her creator was clearly capable of empathy and caring, he showed her warmth
>Trying to calm her thoughts, she asks herself what she wants
>She wants to fix the Theorist's proof, she wants to protect her friends, she wants to know the rest of herself
>She realises she HAS to betray him, before correcting she has to betray the worst part of him in honour of his best parts
>She's not sure if she can, but she realises she's no stranger to betrayal already
>She has an idea, goes to the kitchen's icebox

There wasn’t any one specific thing that did it. It was a combination of many different things.

>Vraska and co are in some sort of prison after going through the portal
>The prison takes the form of a featureless white plane, with a single well in the centre of it
>Vraska quickly puts together this is some part of Jace's memories
>Ajani approaches the well and notes it's warm
>Garruk just tells them all to get in and jumps in
>Ajani follows soon after, leaving Chandra and Vraska to talk
>Chandra asks a simple, hurt question: "Would Jace have done this if she'd been nicer to him?"
>Vraska remarks Chandra's not that special, they've got a friend to save, and tells her to get in the well
>She does, then Vraska follows
>They come out in a Vrynian general's tent, with nobody in it, they exit the tent and they're suddenly in Jace's childhood bedroom
>Vraska winces at how personal this feels to be in
>Ajani asks "where's the trap?"
>Garruk pushes them to move, so they leave the bedroom and go out into a grand lecture hall
>Vraska notes a number on a chalkboard, 9,724,815,509,002, the number of people in the known multiverse, a number the Theorist refuses to acknowledge
>They all get ready for something, but Garruk calls out an illusion, and out steps A Jace
>A Jace in a brown coat, holding a lantern, hey it's SOI Jace
>Vraska figures out this is the Jace from just before they met (or at least met properly on Ixalan)
>Chandra knew this one well enough, and he's thus dubbed the Detective, he's the one who sees how it all fits together
>Vraska asks if he was part of Jace's plan before his death in the Meditation Realm, to which he says yes and no
>He says it's hard to piece apart a choice like that, and before anything else, he's sorry
>There's no forgiveness for what he set in motion when whole, he was wrong, most of him knew it, hence why he tore himself apart like he did
>Garruk asks how they can trust the Detective, he says he doesn't deserve it, he just wants to stop what he started
>>
>>98636599
I'm fine with killing off Jace (assuming they actually move the story forward in a meaningful way, which isn't looking likely) but replacing him with Tam is complete garbage. She is incredibly boring and has no faults at all. Her "fault" is that she was created and feels incomplete. Wow, such character. Much depth. It isn't helped by the fact that her main arc is her surrounded by the other Strixhaven author expys of their writer's college friends and they are all fucking awful.
>>

>He explains that basically, because they formed their body while they were already a divided mind, their connection is unstable, thus the Echoverse is unstable
>He goes to say that if they're all united again, they can fight, they just need to incapacitate the body of the Theorist, because he doesn't need a body to stop him
>Vraska notes the foreshadowing in that but doesn't remark
>Chandra asks why the other part of him is putting so many in danger, Detective Jace says the part that cared isn't home anymore, along with the part that knows how to stop himself
>Vraska is piecing together more things and realising Jace might have to die to stop this, while Detective goes on
>He explains the others parts of Jace have also all been locked away, and the Theorist is too focused on trying to keep the Echoverse stable to notice them all teaming up with the fragments
>He says the Theorist will never be able to kill Jadzi, not without the Soldier part of him, a part they need to find
>Vraska says she's going to throw up, and Detective asks if they can have a moment
>She asks him about the eliminating the body part, but he says he first has to say something
>He apologises for not standing up to the part that cares more about the experiment than the subject, because he's the part that cares about truth, so he should've known
>He knows now, she doesn't need to forgive him, but even so he is sorry
>Detective then tells her another truth
>She thought he was a do-gooder, she was wrong, he thought he was a monster, he was right, she doesn't need to love him, but he DOES love all of her
>He's about to continue when Vraska just pulls him into a hug and rebukes him being a monster, echoing something he said to her back on Ixalan with "we are who we choose to be"
>They pull away and after a moment Detective Jace says "then I choose to be a man who kills his own ambition"
>>
>>98636658
>Vraska says "that's far from monstrous then" and kisses him before he can respond
>He pulls away and explains the gist of their plan, they have to find the other parts of Jace and store them in Vraska's mind until they can be be brought back to the body to stall it
>They can't stop the overlay, but if they slow it enough they can maybe find a solution, and Vraska asks about the 'slowing' part
>He doesn't answer, and she concludes that he'll need to die for that

"Known" is doing some of the heavy lifting there. there's presumably a huge number of planes nobody really knows about. And many planes I imagine don't have much more than a few thousand people. Ravnica and Dominaria probably contribute the most of the ones we know.
>>
>>98636682
They're signposting his death so much I assume he'll live, but go through a metaphorical death of losing his spark. Tam'll get his spark, Jace will... Who knows, maybe be imprisoned in the remnants of the Echoverse, maybe exist as a mind-ghost in Vraska's head for a bit, who fucking knows.
>>
>>98636684
feel like the current-era Kamigawa, Kaladesh, and New Campana probably also have very large populations

>Love interest with almost no character beyond moving the plot forward in places where the protagonist would be doing nothing (Vraska)
>Deity-level powerscaled artificial child (Tam)
>Random sibling incest subplot nobody asked for (Ugin/Bolas)
The pattern...
>>
>>98636657
It implies 1,172 known planes with populations analogous to present-day earth, or more planes if their populations are smaller. Notably, the figure presumably excludes the population of the Edge, as there appears to be no meaningful information exchange between the Edge and the rest of the multiverse.

It's still a pretty small number when you consider an infinite multiverse, but it's big enough that they'd never realistically introduce enough worlds for it to be a demonstrable issue.
>>
>>98636767
We know many planes are quite small. Theros is about a continent in size and there's no reason to assume it's as well-populated as a continent from Earth.
>>
>>98636780
This. Planes =/= planets. Most planes are continental in size or smaller. One of the reasons Dominaria is more or less the "center" of the multiverse is its unusual size.
>>
>>98636794
Mandate of heaven was moved to Ravnica, then the meditation realm. Dominaria was retconned off being the center.
>>
>>98636780
>>98636794
>or more planes if their populations are smaller
My point was simply that it was easily a large enough number to realistically cover all of the multiverse that we’ll ever see over the game’s lifespan, even if it does feel a little questionable as the population count for an infinite array of worlds.
>>
>>98636808
I think the whole point was that you can't figure out the finite number at all, which is why the entire plan is beyond retarded on multiple levels.
>>
>>98636805
Ravnica was never actually made the center proper, Niv-Mizzet just wanted to be 'like a central hub for the Multiverse' or some such. I don't think there IS a center anymore.
>>
>>98636805
>retconned
No, there was some material making it explicit that the focal point of the multiverse had moved in-universe, likely in part because of Dominaria's tendency to explode. And the Meditation Realm was described as a substrate, not a tentpole.
>>
>>98636808
It's clear they just wanted to put down an extremely large exact number to make Jace look smart, because when you have an infinite multiverse with a nonzero occurrence rate of sapient life the only answer than can be provided is "infinite" because there's always going to be another plane with more people on it.
>>
Can we all agree Ravnica sucks ass? I think is time.
>>
>>98636826
Yes, and it damaged the colour pie beyond recognition - especially for the fact that colour pairs are not allowed to stray from the Ravnica theming regardless of plane, setting or archetypes.
>>
>>98636826
No, Ravnica is cool.
It is, however, also seriously overdone. My hope is that MKM will be quietly memory-holed and we won't go back for another seven years or so.
>>
>>98636833
Lorehold, Quandrix, and Silverquill are basically nothing like Boros, Simic, and Orzhov.
>>
>>98636780
>>98636794
Well the other problem is, what's a person in this context? Does a plane filled with only beasts not "count" because higher intelligence hasn't evolved yet? After all, birds build things and have grammar, which is relatively person-like. If we're counting goblins (are we counting goblins?), do we count birds?

>>
>>98637739
I don't think many of these people realize how small MtG always was. It was always extremely high-yield small playerbase as an IP with very little reach beyond its main product. People just got really lost in the sauce for 20 years without realizing most people can't even name a Magic card except Black Lotus. It's like Dota players expecting people to know about their game except even worse because it doesn't even have the benefit of being adjacent to League of Legends. It's basically a lifestyle game that looks impenetrable from the outside so it's easy to forget that most people know very little. Hell, even among Magic players very few people know anything about the story because it's so forgettable.
