Why isn't your character carrying a 50lb sack of oatmeal everywhere they go?Are they suicidal?

>>98629489You need water far more regularly than you need food (you can even go 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water), so you're going to have to be finding water sources more often anyway than you're going to have to worry about putting jerky in your belly. And, a pot or pan has lots of different uses beyond just being used to prepare meals, though just being able to boil water already puts it as a piece of equipment worth carrying. But, if a pot that weighs less than a pound sounds like too much of a hassle, there's plenty of (less convenient) substitutes, including sheets of thin tin that can be shaped into a pot as needed, helmets/bucklers/pauldrons/poleyns/etc., and there's even a way to boil water using a leather bag.But, oatmeal can be eaten uncooked, either dry just like horses do, or by soaking it for some time in cold water (or milk, or stock, or wine, or really whatever liquid you have on hand [including blood, with the fundamental core of Black Puddings being oats soaked in sheep/pig/cow blood along with some fat]). If, you want something even more convenient and palatable, you can also pre-cook it and dry it to make it a little easier to eat. That's essentially what instant oatmeal is, and is easier to eat dry, soaked, and even cooks faster. Or you can go the route of mixing it with honey and baking it and just snacking on granola.

>>98639261The steps that's missing is either heating the water or boiling the water and the oatmeal together. Cold water won't make the starches in the oatmeal gelatinize, but hot water will, and it's the gelatinized starches that become an strong adhesive.
