A place for discussion of pre-WotC D&D, OSR retroclones, and OSR-adjacent games.

>Is this a general?
No, just a place to discuss OSR and related content.
>Isn't there an OSR thread already?
No, the current regulars of /osrg/ have made it clear they only want to see a narrow subset of OSR games in the thread.
This means the name /osrg/ is somewhat misleading, but that's their problem.
Please report and ignore any trolling.

What's your favorite houserule and what does it bring to the table?
>>

I'll start
no "roll for initiative"
if the party sees something they can react to they act immediately
if they are caught by surprise, the monsters go first
then it's just alternating order

additionally players go either in a "hot potato" sequence
>that's it for my turn, now Jeff
or simply clockwise
additionally spellcasting monsters telegraph if they are starting to cast a spell at the beginning of player's turn

why? because it significantly speeds up the game
>>
>>98630908
Reminds me of ICRPG handles turn order

I appreciate it cuz it means before the session even starts you can kind of plan how combat is gonna go just based on where everyone sits

It's definitely "not a general", but you need to have at least two of them on the board all day every day, and currently three?

Im looking to get my first play experince for OSE and maybe DCC soon
Does anyone have any good quests for someone new to this stuff
Assume if you will there will be players who havent played a TTRPG there
>>
>>98631511
Yeah, the quest is that they start outside of a dungeon and they are poor and need money so they go inside the dungeon can get money and come back to town with it
>>
>>98631535
Will there be dragons in it?
>>
>>98631491
Please understand, Anon. This man has a brain problem. He has some sort of crazed vendetta against the OSR General, and the only way he can vent his frustration is by posting a ton of samefaggotry.
>>
>>98631511
Completely new?

Tomb of the Serpent King is about as deliberately new GM/player friendly as things get, but it's both not a TSR adventure and not all that great beyond really babying both the GM and players. If you or your players have some form of learning disability, it might be worth a look.
https://www.scribd.com/document/964904839/Olde-Swords-Reign-Tomb-of-the-Serpent-Kings
If you want an extremely "traditional" way to start things off, Keep on the Borderlands is a Gygax-written adventure and served as the intro adventure for likely the majority of groups back when Old School was just... School. It is also just okay, but it definitely feels like a classic adventure to the point where you could even call it prototypical.

You might want to take a look at Against the Cult of the Reptile God. It was made for AD&D, but it doesn't take much to use it in B/X. If Keep would be the vanilla way to start things, Cult would be the french vanilla, since it's a little more nuanced and complex in terms of situation but still very much an intro adventure.

Reminder to ignore the butthurt troll coming from the /osrg/. He's just mad that he could never figure out how to argue around someone like Finch objectively stating 2e is OSR, which completely uproots all the troll's insane bullshit of how he thinks the OSR started as an anti-2e movement.
>>
>>98631690

Man, all that butthurt makes you fucking retarded

ehhhhh... a quest as in a published adventure?
[1/2]
seconding Tomb of the Serpent King as other anon said, but I would warn you that the classic adventures he mentioned would take quite a bit of time
just so you know
both of them can easily stretch well beyond 6 4-hour session

also properly converting from A to B/X D&D (i.e. OSE) is not as trivial as the anon makes it out to be so I wouldn't make it my first game would I start out unless you can find a conversion of that module online

for the same reason I wouldn't recommend Shadowdark adventures for an absolute beginner

I'm thinking of something that can be run in about 2 sessions and is free of charge, and Cult of the Green Skull comes to mind from BFRPG adventure anthology 3 (a free download from BFRPG website). It doesn't require any conversion (but you have to use the ascending AC rule). The adventure is pretty brutal, remember reaction rolls and moral rolls, but pretty decent. The sucky part is that it doesn't come with a random encounter table. But for the first ever game it is not critical, you can consider this to be training wheels.

>>98631756
[2/2]
you can never go wrong with some OSE adventures
specifically The Incandescent Grottoes and Nightmare Over Ragged Hollow are very good but also quite lengthy

what's your preferences? short or long? fantastical or horror?
>>
>>98631511
On the off chance you're not just bumping your own shitshow there's a very good list of intro modules and explanations in the pastebin for the real thread >>98616153

a) believe it or not but how many games an adventure is going to last is a valid concern for most TTRPG tables
and b) believe it or not the fact that an adventure could be more than some absolute novices with fresh characters could chew is a valid concern for most tables starting out with OSR

I mean you would have known that would you have actually played any games and not be a terminally online looser
but here we are and you've made a fool out of yourself... again
you are like a stinky schizo rambling bum

Yes, one is about everything OSR, using a much broader definition than /osrg/ does, and this one is about how OP is a butthurt faggot who is mad that /osrg/ won't agree with him.

They are not different at all, let alone meaningfully. They are both garbage attempts at hijacking the osrg, completely spurned on by the fishfag being told to fuck off by the mods and to stop making fake general threads
>>98631645
Dogshit advice from the exact same retard that we are complaining about.
>>
>>98631670

>>
>>98631690
Someone like who? I don't know who this person is, but I should let you know something right now: the opinions of random people and random websites have absolutely no bearing on what a single thread gets to dictate for itself.

I would extend that same benefit to this very thread, unfortunately we both know that it is just another poorly disguised derailment thread, in addition to the other one that exists simultaneously.
>>
>>98631690
Belligerent newfag tourist moron: it is not anti second edition.

And arguing semantics over nebulous origins has absolutely no meaning for whether or not a thread gets to decide if something is on or off topic. That is decided as consensus by the thread itself, and as has been demonstrated by the mods, the general is to remain the way it is, and you are to continue pissing and moaning about it.

We don't hate the game, we hate it being shoved into our thread where we don't want it. The whole thing would be a lot more forgivable however, if you actually discussed playing second edition ever, or could even produce a functioning character sheet, notes, maps.
But you will produce nothing except for the two fake broken sheets that you showed us months ago, and they will forever be your legacy, along with a screenshot of talking to the mods while crying, and being spanked by them shortly after.
God protect the enclave.
>>
Yo this troll be malding like fuck.

Feel free to contact the mods on IRC and ask them for their opinion on the matter :-) let us know when you do!
>>
>>98630949
>Remember, just chatting and role playing a bit is fine ANY TIME.

That feels like whoever wrote that has both a story and some unresolved issues.
>>
>>98634276
there is no actual consensus which is a pretty obvious fact considering this lead to a chain of events resulting in these threads
>our thread
that's not how this internet website works
I think a private discord server will be more your speed
However I have to point out would you rename the thread FAG or something there would be probably zero issues, because then the name would be aligned with the content
>you will
your post implies you still insist it's only one anon
if you still really believe that despite all the evidence you are factually deranged
>>
>>98635068
Just chancing your spacing and not capitalizing doesn't disguise you at all.
>>
>>98635068
>there is no actual consensus which is a pretty obvious fact considering this lead to a chain of events resulting in these threads
KEK
There's exactly one of you sperging out over the consensus to an unhinged degree and that's what led to these threads. Your solitary shitloss has no wider meaning than that you're insane.
