Why are modern wargames and boardgames so soulless compared to classics from the 70s and 80s?
>>98631124Matches the quality of engagement and commentary in the community. You can't even say what the game is or talk about having played it or any details beyond vague posting for bait. You get what you give.
>>98631124What the fuck is thatI love it
>>98631124>Why are modern wargames and boardgames so [meaningless buzzword] compared to classics from the 70s and 80s?Say what you mean, or your opinion is invalid.
>>98631124Too strong a focus on balance and "fairness". Old games didn't care if everything was janky as fuck and if the Wizard could actually defeat all the other players and possibly win the game on the first turn if you did XYZ sequence of carefully selected actions.PvP video games introduced the idea of balance, and the Internet meant that That Guys could compare notes to get to ever-more-autistic solutions ever-faster.
>>98632194I'm 80% certain this is from RuneQuest.
>>98632194It's probably White Bear and Red Moon, the pre-Runequest Runequest war game.So >>98632386 is at least partly right. It might be from the sequel game Nomad Gods or iirc there was some sort of combined super-version that integrated them both together.
>>98631124Bat points are an integral part of the roleplay experience.
>>98631124Because most of the GW and WotC devs (along with many video game devs) are no longer hobbyists who turned their hobbies into a way to make money and are now people with degrees in "game design" or "liberal arts" doing the job of game dev.>>98632380More like the new generation devs are idiots are a constantly trying to balance things by making them 1:1 equivalencies rather than understanding that a lot of balancing factors were spread throughout the whole system.Consider the spell Knock verses a Thief's open lock. Knock had a 100% chance of opening a lock but would also make a loud sound that would alert and possibly attract those in the area (i.e. triggering a random encounter). Open lock on the other hand could usual open the lock without attracting/alerting anyone allowing for ambushes and surprise attacks from the party.
>>98632781>shit dude you haven't fed your bat in 2 days looks like it eats your whole army
>>98631124Tables and charts are so KINO but modern wargamers seethe and shit themselves when they have to open a rulebook for reference. Everything nowadays is marketed as "RULES LITE" "FAST!" "STREAMLINED AND SIMPLE!"
>>98632541Yeah, more precisely Dragon Pass, the 1980+ edition of WBRM.>>98632961well, it's a big red bat.
>>98634531I'm honestly glad we've moved beyond the ancient 70s divination method of "peruse a giant table of combat factor ratios to see if you hit stuff" and have invented math. "Add numbers to your dice roll to reach target number" is so much more satisfying as a sapient life form.
>>98635115RQ/Chaosium in general has come a long way. They've fixed gaming by introducing official extreme, hard, and normal success. Now I can just roll for Crimson Bat's CON and if he fails, shit. Time to feast.
