>*exploits loopholes to fight against evil*

Isn't that pretty underhanded for a supposed paladin? Is it lawful good to follow the letter of the law/oath but not the spirit?
>>
>>98631450
To be fair, the unicorn didn't hold up its end of the bargain.
>>
>>98631450
Maybe he's jewish.
>>
>>98631450
There are many different kinds of paladins, with different driving goals.
This all also exists within the same universe as the Fey, for whom being technically correct is the best kind of correct.
>>
>>98631450
isn't all of rabbinical Judaism based on the idea that they aren't technically sinning and God in return doesn't technically smite them all?
>>
>>98631450
>Is it lawful good to follow the letter of the law/oath but not the spirit?
the spirit of the law may be written and interpreted for good or evil, but it's the letter that makes it lawful.
>>
>>98631503
Their attitude is that because God is omnipotent and omniscient that anything that's a loophole is actually completely intended because god made the rules so specific on purpose. This is why there's so many jewish lawyers since their religious education is basically angle shooting with "statutes" written thousands of years ago.

This is how you get shit like kosher light switches and elevators and the eruv wound all around the entirety of Manhattan
>>
>>98631450
Per Gygax, a law that does not serve good does not apply to a Lawful Good character.

What a despicable, evil race.

some gods wants you to try and trick them on a technicality because that means you paid attention to what is and isn't allowed

I still wonder if the Barbarian took the Pegasus oaths in an earlier stage of his character before he became broken or if he checks all boxes to be pure enough out of principle:

> doesn't fuck bitches
> doesn't kill
> doesn't take money
> doesn't drink
> doesn't swear
>>
>>98631450
You can tell if you followed your god's intentions for the spirit of the law or not by if you fell from breaking it.

>Is it lawful good to follow the letter of the law/oath but not the spirit?
No. Lawful good is massively influenced by the spirit/GOOD part of the alignment. Lawful Neutral is the one you want if you care more about the LAW part than good.
>>
>>98631503
Yes, but it gets worse. Judaism is based on the idea that the the consensus of the rabbis overrules God Himself because "the Torah is on earth and not in heaven"
>>
>>98631503
Its more ridiculous than you think. Imagine someone tells you that you are not allowed to consume alcohol on a monday, so using a later version of the language where the word consume becomes sip, so you instead swallow the alcohol open mouthed, instead of sipping it, and say the law allows it. Then someone else uses this understanding of the law to create a new loophole, which gets changed due to change of language so another person uses the new loophole and now you are allowed to drink alcohol on a monday but only if you have 2 fingers up your ass (eight more loopholes and language changes to allow the fingers up your ass).

Imagine your father tells you not to turn on the light, so you do turn on the light while trying to look as ugly as you can (the light is not sexually aroused). Your still going to get your ass beat.

The barbarian also had the excellent idea to feed his victims immortality potion made by the hag so technically he can't kill them even if he doesn't just like the djinn, he only made it wish for death and still kept it inside of it's lamp.

There is also the fact he and kevin put the immortality potion on their weapons so they cut the oni into bits and then ate him to shit him out later.

no, it doesn't

Americans worship them as the Chosen People, by the way.

if lawful evil can exploit the rules for evil, why can't lawful good exploit the rules for good?
>>
>>98632174
Because evil is hawkish and will call out the "hypocrisy" in a second.
>>
>>98631782
2 axis alignment was a mistake.
>>98632174
>exploit
Gee I wonder why that's not allowed.
>>
>>98632000
Yes it does
https://www.sefaria.org/Bava_Metzia.59b.5?lang=bi

Long story short
>rabbis discuss whether a certain type of oven is kosher
>Elaizer the great says it is and performs miracles to back it up
>rabbis say "miracles aren't an argument"
>Elaizer gets God to back him up
>the rabbis overrule God
>God retreats, proclaiming He has been DESTROYED by FACTS and LOGIC
>>
>>98631579
Yeah, they shouldn't try to find loopholes, they should just outright ignore their holy laws and dictates like Christians do.
>>
>>98632184
Right, I'm killing the evil person while they're still talking.
>>
>>98632373
If(Messiah)
{New Covenant}
Else
{Old Covenant};

Note that
Messiah = true;
Does not erase the else-statement but merely bypasses it.

Simple as.
>>

How intolerant of you!
>>
>>98632408
Yeah, but they don't even follow the teachings of their messiah here in Burgerland.
>>
>>98631450
Like old school catholicism, when edge-cases are found in the rules, oaths or directives, it's not within the paladin's remit to go and interpret what he should do himself and then refer back to the exact wording of his oaths as justification. He has to seek the guidance & judgement of the relevant God's representatives on earth when he can to clear things up. (ideally the paladin should be obeying religious laws/oaths made in a language he doesn't understand, to ensure he can do no interpretation.)

Coincidentally this means that in game, paladins don't need to hem and haw about if an action conforms with their oaths: they can ask the nearby priest in town or maybe their God directly (they ask the GM, who makes an on-the-fly decision).

Came here to post this
>>
>>98631450
It's a magical oath, he is incapable of breaking it. Anything he is able to do is within the bounds of the oath.
>>
>>98632780
What happens when the paladin talks to two different priests who have their own interpretation of the same law? Or is that getting into unnecessary minutia for the GM to consider?
>>
>>98632339
>>rabbis say "miracles aren't an argument"
Based logicians.
>>
>>98631503
It's based on "God is infallible, so the loopholes are a reward for those who pay attention".
>>
>>98634592
Each priest is more or less in charge of his own area, so cleave to local moral law. Ideally religious authority should be centralized enough that differences in interpretation are minimal, and in significant cases disagreements can be resolved by the next layer up in the hierarchy.

>Isn't that pretty underhanded for a supposed paladin?
Paladins are not stupid. They are allowed to be strategic in their choices and actions, which may very well involve lawyering when the situation calls for it.
>Is it lawful good to follow the letter of the law/oath but not the spirit?
Depends on the law, because laws can be good or bad, ordered or arbitrary. Lawful does not mean adherence to mundane laws for their own sake, but a principled and ordered framework for life and approach to thought and action, and in this case tempered by Good.

The topic concerns Lawful Good, not Lawful Evil. Judaism is definitely Lawful, but by alignment metrics one would be exceptionally hard-pressed to redefine it as even Neutral. This is likely part of why Jews kvetch so much over the alignment system or fail to grasp it despite how fucking simple it is.
>>
>>98631562
They absolutely apply to a Lawful Good character. Alignment is descriptive, not prescriptive. Most Lawful Good characters will follow the laws even when they do not serve good. A paladin, however, in pursuit of exemplifying the ideal, will likely not want to, however, and it is perfectly within his rights to act against it without risking loss of alignment.

>>98631669
No he just force himself upon the horse.

We seen him kill all the time. Hell, he just killed that harpy/giant bird with a pillow.... I mean put to sleep
