A similar thing happened with Halflings.Elves in OD&D could swap between Fighter and Magic-User between adventures. Holmes basic instead combined them into a character who was both at the same time.

Old dnd is pretty commonly known as being influenced by Tolkien writing. Thats the guy that wrote stuff like the lord of the rings and the hobbit. Races in that setting were a bit homogeneous and were their own little things. They just didn't do Race+class till later.
