>Be a kid in the 2000s>Don't have any money of your own>Maybe only have one or two RPG books (If any at all.)>What do you and your friends have? Video Game strategy guides>Use the video game strategy guides as makeshift material for tabletop RPGsI'm sure other people did this as well. Anyone have any stories from this? I've been considering pulling material from game strategy guides to run in my game, or maybe do a solo RPG kind of thing where I play through a "Video game" as a tabletop RPG.
>>98657267I used the guide for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles to make that a campaign setting. It was pretty interesting.
>>98657267I used lyrics to make my setting and this baby puzzle set to help make my dungeonsthere was a jungle themed one too I think, we definitely had two
>>98657267Nah, we used to just pass around thumb drives with pirated pdfs of rpg books on them
>>9865726790s but similar enough. Mixed in some random GW catalogues and game magazines. Recreating Shadowrun without any of the rule books just a few white wolf articles with TSR's Top Secret was fun.
>>98657428holy based, these things were awesome, did you have the train one?
>>98657267I am still waiting for my opportunity to turn Tomb Raider 3 into an RPG campaign without telling my players what it is.
>90s>be me>be not me, 3 kids of similarish age>one kids dad had gotten severe brain damage after getting hit by a car and then his mom left rather than dealing with it>always hang out at that kids place because no adult supervision >summer so no obligations>rain for a week so no going outside>wanting to play a game>recreate a roleplaying game based soley on that one Dexters Laboratory episode >game mechanics vaguely based on Heroes 3>no gm because we don't know what that is >everyone plays the citizens of their own stronghold >units are drawn on post it notes and given one or two abilities eachMine were some weird bird robot things.>no dice. Conflicts were solved by agreeing on what felt "right" and by spending bullshit resources >nobody doing the infinity shield +1000 thing because everyone k ew the others would beat them up for being a little bitchThe game went on for another week before the rain stopped and we were allowed outside again.Still one of the better campaigns I jave played in.

>>98657267>be me, a teen in the 1990s>I like ttrpgs and anime>Read Risus & Fudge>Watch Cowboy-Bebop>I create a simplish TTRPG that only uses 6 established stats that are "approaches", it uses fudge dice and let's everyone add to the narrative and is themed around cowboy bebop>Only share it with my buddies, good times, great campaign >I go to college and forget about it.>Years later I find that Fate Accelerated is basically the same thing, minus the cowboy bebop thing. We called it "Bounty Hunter".
I have talked to grognards who say they have never purchased a module in their life with the reason being that if you buy a module you can only play it once and can't replay with the same group. Instead you save your money and purchase a new game system or a setting book for the price of 3-5 modules giving you more fun then a module jammed with filler content and weak story. So many of them are the kings of just coming up with shit on the fly plus they feel no shame in ripping off other settings. I played in a game where we started off in sentinel hill fighting defias brotherhood and then took a magic boat to krynn to help tanis halfelven.
>>98657267I made a TTRPG based on Arcanum. Hell, the game basically uses TT mechanics already (though, no, it isn't GURPS).
