I've wanted to give one a try and Princess: the Hopeful and Magical Burst seem to be the most recommended ones. Anyone have experience with either of these or some other game? How are they?

OVA is the best existing game for handling anything magical girls related. It is technically "anime RPG", but in reality it is super-flexible, rules-light universal system that handles the genre really well via internal construction of the rules

nta, I was reading into it during lunch break, but basically just got the fluff out of the way, which you can always ignore I guess. There's enemies from beyond the veil making incursions, an academy in a rather generic city is where magical girls are trained, there's a fair number of "classes" (actually mechanical frames not too different from symphogear, by what I gathered), and some enemies can infiltrate so you have the chance to have enemy magical girls. The sandbox has everything you need. Still have to check the crunch though.

I would say the impact of meguca is actually pretty lowkey. As in, I didn't witness a deluge of desperation-driven MS anime.
>>
>>98678811
In truth, all meguca really did was impress a bunch of normies who don't watch magical girls and called it a deconstruction mainly cause it had gore, guns, and the mascot was evil against what they expected. A lot of that shit was already done before, just not all at once or given that much recognition. Like, there do exist actual deconstructions of the genre, but that would be in shit like the comedic Magical Witch Punie-chan that basically took the premise of "What if Sally the Witch was secretly a completely evil bitch" and ran with it full stop, or Power of Hope: PreCure Full Bloom which was basically "So how does being a magical girl work once they become adults, do they still hold onto all that friendship and sparkle shit or does the magic eventually fade?" Meguca by comparison is pretty normal for a magical girl show, they just had one of the main characters die off bloodily pretty early and gave Homura a desert eagle. Shit like
>>
>>98679142

I'm not sure what "done before" has to do with it (not) being a deconstruction tough.
Like, yes, deconstructions are supposed to aim at saying something new, but not necessarily be totally unheard of in any single element.

My feeling is that the deconstructionist element is "what if the emotional rollcoaster was actually the thing that fueled MG and their enemies, in the usual highly evolved alien magic setting?". Your mileage may vary regarding how well it was done, but I would say the idea was pretty clear in the regard.
>>
>>98679210
Read >>98678236
>>
>>98679229

I did. It's dumb, deconstruction is a pretty simple idea as it's used. It's about asking "what if these convention' consequences were fully explored?".

It's not really related to cinicism (or, god forbid, to these works being "smarter"), even if it generally ends up darker: 40k is hardly a deconstruction of space opera, for example, even if it satirizes it.
>>
>>98679210
>"what if the emotional rollcoaster was actually the thing that fueled MG and their enemies, in the usual highly evolved alien magic setting?".
Already something that happens in a number of magical girl shows like Precure and Symphogear.

>I'm not sure what "done before" has to do with it (not) being a deconstruction tough.
Deconstruction is essentially looking at the bare elements of the work in relation to the body of the work and see how well they stand up on their own as well as understand how necessary their presence is to the body of work as a whole.

I'll take Suicide Girl, an actual manga, as an example. The general idea of magical girl warriors are that they are the ideal self for a girl, using their emotional strength and empathy as literal weapons against evil and not just their tools to succeed in life, as well as inspire those feelings in others. Suicide Girl asks if someone who is depressed to the point of being suicidal and repeating nothing but self-affirmations that life is hopeless can still be considered a "magical girl", considering that their image and themes contrast to what popular culture expects of a magical girl. The answer is ultimately "yes, since one can still inspire hope in others even if they have no hope for themselves and find a reason through living via continually fighting off their desire to end their suffering".

Meguca not doing anything different doesn't make it much of a deconstruction, it's just barebones holding up a mirror to some of the darker elements and going "Hey, isn't that a thing?" Sailor Moon horrifically killed off its main characters in battle like Mami, Cardcaptor Sakura has used a manipulative mentor mascot figure even if he was ultimately working for a good end, and are we really willing to say "magical girl pulls out a gun and not a magic stick" is in and of itself enough to call it deconstruction? Cause again, Magical Witch Punie-chan did the same thing as a joke.
>>
>>98679313

And I already said that I don't think it being "already done" disqualifies it. Hell, it doesn't work if the implications are pretty similar (Ideon/Evangelion). Anyway, both Symphogear and Full Bloom happened after Madoka, so in that case it would disqualify them.

>Meguca not doing anything different doesn't make it much of a deconstruction, it's just barebones holding up a mirror to some of the darker elements and going "Hey, isn't that a thing?" I don't see the point here, as I definitely didn't imply those make it such. Anyway, not sure when in sailor moon there is main squad killing.
>>
>>98679359
>And I already said that I don't think it being "already done" disqualifies it. Hell, it doesn't work if the implications are pretty similar (Ideon/Evangelion).
No, but doing nothing besides pointing out that such a thing exists doesn't qualify it as deconstruction either. Power Rangers pointing out how silly it is for the enemies to give their opponents time to power up and transform isn't a deconstruction. If they were actually attacked during it, or otherwise showed the steps they took to keeping themselves safe during the big transformation event, that would be closer to a deconstruction. But the mere presence of a deagle in Homura's hand or Mami's head getting bit off does not make it a deconstruction. It's what the show does with it that makes it so. And it doesn't so much beyond go "Isn't this a thing?"

>Anyway, both Symphogear and Full Bloom happened after Madoka, so in that case it would disqualify them
Who said that I was only talking about Full Bloom?

>I don't see the point here, as I definitely didn't imply those make it such. Anyway, not sure when in sailor moon there is main squad killing.
...The very end of the first season, when Queen Beryl butchers the entire damn cast and it takes Sailor Moon reviving an ancient personality and its subsequent magic to do so. Like, I'm not talking about obscure shit, I'm pointing out that the magical girl show most people spend time making "deconstructions" about had already ripped off the bandaids off its basic elements ages ago such as the supposed cliche of the main characters being exempt from the more brutal elements of their line of work or that a magical girl would be immune to the same level of despair and hopelessness the victims of the week would be. Shit that people credit Meduca for "deconstructing" when Sailor Moon already ripped the bandage off ages ago. They're trying to pick at a cliche that had already not been in use for decades at that point.

>The very end of the first season, when Queen Beryl butchers the entire damn cast and it takes Sailor Moon reviving an ancient personality and its subsequent magic to do so.

Oh, THAT. Yes, but they're all revived. Quite different shit - I think in my mind it's so different (a copeout, I'd even say) that I suppose you'd not even think of that.
It's, uh, the difference between Gandalf and an actual mentor killing. Something like that.

>>
>>98679461
>so I really don't know what you're pointing to now.
It’s a cliche for Precure that the villains are often using magic similar to the ones the heroes use, sometimes from the same source, albeit either corrupted or perversely warped to cause harm to others. Some even have villains from the same species as the cute mascot mentors or even “dark” Precures to emphasize that it’s the intent behind their power and not the power itself that makes the heroes good via the counter example of someone using those same powers for evil.

>Oh, THAT. Yes, but they're all revived. Quite different shit
If we’re going down that route, I need to point out Madoka does the same thing with her wish at the end of the anime, considering Mami is alive in the movies.
>>
>>98679524
>If we’re going down that route, I need to point out Madoka does the same thing with her wish at the end of the anime, considering Mami is alive in the movies.

Different continuity, altough yes, suppose if you watch the movies directly after the series it would kinda count.
But I mean, people don't assume Eva rebuild "overwrote" the series.

I don't see how this is relevant tough, as it's not why I consider it a deconstruction.
>>
>>98679496
>Note that the mangaka actually wanted them all to die and stay dead
So evil would've won?
>>
>>98679561
My main point is that meduka isn’t a deconstruction, it’s just a normal magical girl show with more psychological trauma as the main source of drama. It isn’t trying to pull at the conventions of the genre or scrutinize an element that people take for granted. It’s just presents itself with a different flair, but it otherwise is just presenting the same content as its contemporaries. I’m not calling it a bad show, I’m calling the people who glaze it as a “deconstruction” to not have the familiarity with other bodies of work in the genre to understand that it’s following in the footsteps of its peers instead of blazing an unknown path.
>>
>>98667257
Best magical girl system is Mekton Zeta.
>>
>>98679292
>"what if these convention' consequences were fully explored?".
Which was already done before Madoka and other so called "deconstruction" existing, making the whole existence of the concept of deconstruction redundant, pretentious and false. Madoka didn't introduce anything to the Magical Girl, except normies who never liked the genre.
>It's not really related to cinicism
This is your personal opinion, incorrect by the way. The fact is that "deconstruction" authors hate the genres they "deconstruct". So deconstruction being cynic and pretending to be smarter is a fact.
>>
>>98679621

For the sake of argument, what series/book/game/whatever would you call actual deconstruction?
>>
>>98679683
For the sake of argument, for its time A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court would count closer to the idea of what a deconstruction is by taking the mythology of Arthurian legends and examining the cultural values of feudalism and romantic chivalry by contrasting it to how those views are seen by a then-modern day man and how he attempts to challenge them in contrast to democratic values and enlightenment. Similarly with how Don Quixote originally was written specifically to pull at the elements of romantic chivalric knight-errant stories and use humor to make us question whether those elements by themselves are really as inherently noble and valorous as the marketing wants us to believe. At least, at first. The later volumes were a lot less harsh on Don Quixote himself and turned the question into whether or not it's the journey or the goals that make a knight's quest noble, with Don Quixote himself believing that his quest was a farce since his goals were the product of a diseased mind while his "squire" Pancho came to answering that Don Quixote was a worthy knight since his journey though farcical nevertheless inspired his squire to earnestly believe in all the old values knightdom purported to uphold and do good for others.

That's closer to what deconstruction is meant to be. And there's nothing wrong if something isn't deconstruction at the end of the day, it just means you might be mistaking subversion for something meant to be taken straightforwardly.

I have to respectfully disagree.

Your examples are all about "gee, imagine if those whimsical genre values were destroyed by real life cinicism!" which is... pretty much what meguca is accused to have done, while it is (supposedly) NOT making is a deconstruction.

So, either that is the point of deconstructions or it is not.

>>98680739

Not main cast.
>>
>>98669183
NTA, but having read through it, it uses a deck of playing cards as the resource system, but plays out with grid based combat.
That does a pretty good job of making different magical girls fight in different ways. One of the default options is having a sniper girl who focuses on making one big attack with her other abilities all supplementing that, for example.
You do use the playing cards out of combat as well, basically discarding a card then drawing a new one in order to use a hobby/talent/etc. to help overcome a problem. That can have some bearing on combat, but mostly because it allows you to sculpt your starting hand in terms of available suits.

It certainly strikes me as more combat focused, but that's mainly relative to some other magical girl games I've seen which place a lot more mechanics on the social aspects. There is a fair amount of customization in terms of loadouts, but the fact that there are loadouts probably says plenty about what type of game it is by itself.
>>
>>98683979
>Your examples are all about "gee, imagine if those whimsical genre values were destroyed by real life cinicism!" which is... pretty much what meguca is accused to have done, while it is (supposedly) NOT making is a deconstruction.
Anon, that is possibly one of the most retarded opinions I have ever read this century. Like, I seriously mean it.

The point isn't "lol modern values", the point is that the work is not just holding up a spotlight to the various elements in a work, it's actually trying to say something different with them so that we can get a broader understanding of their relation to the genre as a whole. And Madoka doesn't say anything different or present its subject matter with any permutation or variation that hasn't already been made throughout the years.
>>
>>98687200

Nah, the point of Cervantes was exactly "lol actual reality vs these tropes", not "saying something new in chivalric romance" (hard to do, as it's not even a poem, right?). Hell, it was kinda "lol genre nerds", even. It's not totally comical, but this is of no consequence to the point,
Mark Twain could be a little more nuanced amusingly enough, because he goes from simple parody to industrialized war horror, but still, same shit really.

This is not really debatable. The question of what is a "deconstruction" in popular culture (or, anyway, generic discourse, not Derrida's works) is not really worth considering if that is not clear.
>>
>>98689026
>The question of what is a "deconstruction" in popular culture (or, anyway, generic discourse, not Derrida's works) is not really worth considering if that is not clear.
Eh, on that we'll agree. To be frank, everyone is way too eager to jump onto something being a deconstruction that it's clear that to most people it only equates to "look at thing in the most uncharitable light possible". And that includes Meduka Meguca, which isn't even a bad anime but it sure as hell ain't trying to be a deconstruction either since all the stuff it does people say is "deconstructing a magical girl" is just normal faire for what magical girl shows are like.
>>
Just because Madoka is mediocre doesn't mean is not trying to be another turd poisoning the well.
>>
>>98674549
I'm on the field that Madoka seemingly deconstructs or twists so much, it kinda ends up being its own thing.
>Magical Girls, but fighting with badass weapons
>costumes generally so weird to the genre you can't tell a lot of them are supposed to be Magical Girls
>Misery, Misery, Misery all the way, skips on the cuteness part
>mentor ends up being the villain, sci fi twist
>main character doesn't even become a Magical Gifl effectively until the end
>witches are basically a non-entity, a lot of the time you can barely tell what's going on in the confrontation
>generally boring
>seriously, just the premise of "what if SOMETHING went horribly wrong in their magical adventures fighting monsters with funny faces and someone fucking dies or becomes villain" would have made for a new show premise
Hell, each one of those things could make for an original story, including the time travel shit.
(Mind you, Magia Record did basically everything better, including using the main characters from Madoka as a team for once, even if a lot of it goes south when they start explaining it.)

>>
>>98692720
As other anons have pointed out, the clash between idealism and cynicism, or rather maintaining the former in the face of a reality that favors the latter, has been feature of the magical girl genre since the beginning. I think a lot of western audiences see Madoka as more radical than it is precisely because the only other magical girl show they've seen is Sailor Moon, and not very much of that. I don't hate Madoka, it's a solid crossover hit, but magical girls are just one of those genres that consists almost entirely of attempts to break a mold that never really existed.Just be glad it's not isekai.

GbM is a lot like Masks. It's specifically about interpersonal drama first, and super heroics second. Being a hero is just the lens through which the character drama is explored. That's fine, but it's not gonna suit every campaign idea.
>>
>>98700732
I think there's a core difference, the "don't think too hard about it" factor, to some better-known ones. Card Captor Sakura is an adorable show and manga if you don't overthink it, for instance. Madoka not only overthinks it, but goes out of its way to think about the clichés and go "lol NOPE that won't work here, no redeeming factors, only misery". Even the "happy" ending can't be happy.
>>
>>98702855
What makes it funnier is how unnecessary that level of effort was, if only because quite a lot of magical girl shows were as blunt as possible with their darker elements to begin with. Minky Momo infamously featured the main heroine getting ran over by a truck, and even earlier than that Majokko Meg-chan was already punching down barriers by showing domestic violence and suicide without any frills or euphemisms. Meduka Meguca stands out mainly because unlike the majority of magical girl shows, none of the characters grow up so much as grow sideways. Until magical girl warriors became the norm, most magical girl shows usually end in the main characters losing their powers or having to leave their friends and family but gaining maturity and self-reliance in the process, aka growing up. The main characters of Meguca never really do that, since the closest thing Madoka can give any of them to an ending now is being locked in a state of perpetual adolescence fighting monsters till the end of time, and even that gets undone by a selfish and self-loathing lesbian who explicitly refuses to move in from her schoolgirl crush and outright steals a god’s powers to basically keep her friends in a cage for eternity. And that’s all before the new Brazilian night movie which I hear is its own mess and a half.
>>
>>98700928

Don't see how the fuck GBM would be "generic anime shit" and yes I know about about the mecha setting.

>>98703029

While I'm sure many people do think deconstruction means grimndark, speaking of Madoka, I wouldn't use this definition. Even if I DIDN'T think meguca was one, I mean.

>Until magical girl warriors became the norm, most magical girl shows usually end in the main characters losing their powers or having to leave their friends and family but gaining maturity and self-reliance in the process, aka growing up.

... this is a pretty strange thing to criticize MM for, tough, as the genre in 2012 was solidly post-Sailor Moon at the very least. It would be a little like criticizing post-LOTR fantasy novels just for having races, at the very most you could say that's boring.
(not that I don't think the meguca sequels aren't a bizzare case of "this is some sort of cashgrab, but it will be 2deep4you to make you not really realize it until it's over")
>>
>>98675458
>>98676868
As would I.

Sounds like a group already.
>>
>>98705308
I see I did a poor job explaining my viewpoint, so I’ll restate it with a less bullshitty opinion.

A lot of magical girl shows, magical warrior or not, tend to have sad or bittersweet endings in general, whether the protagonist loses their life, their powers, their friends/found family, some combination of those, or some other factor. But in the process, they will often gain some sense of maturity and self-respect, learn an integral life lesson, or inspire the people around them. In that sense, their endings are less like they’re losing what makes them magical and special and more that they don’t NEED to have those powers anymore because they’ve learned they are special, and can move in from that lifestyle now as a fully functional adult.

Madoka Magica by contrast is closer to being about arrested development, or being unable to move on from the childhood desire of wanting to be special. Mami dies because she wants to be the reliable heroine and can’t accept her imperfections. Sayaka loses her mind because she can’t accept her first childhood crush isn’t perfect and one-sided. Homura can’t let go of Madoka to the point of literally imprisoning her crush with magic. Even the law of cycles and witches exist because ultimately none of them want to accept that their wishes won’t come true nor that they’ll vanish into the ether after death like everyone else. If I had to criticize Meduka for anything, it’s that it unintentionally glorifies Peter Pan syndrome in contrast to every other magical girl show ever. Even the Precure sequel which feature all the girls as actual adults shows that being a magical girl isn’t the end all be all of your life, and that you shouldn’t be afraid to grow up or change your old dreams for new ones. Hell, even the more positive magical girl shows will show that the main characters have matured or learned something important as people that they’ll carry onto their adult lives. Not so with Meguca.
>>
>>98705498
Oh, and to clarify, I don’t think Madoka is meant to be a deconstruction with all that in mind, if only because most of the supplemental materials don’t indicate we’re meant to interpret characters and their failures to overcome their fatal flaws as examples of how the conceit of “magical girl” can be twisted in such a negative fashion. By all indications, we’re meant to just take them fully at face value. With their flaws being the follies of youth rather than pointed stabs at the very concept of what a magical girl represents in a media sense of a girl basically becoming their idealized adult self as a princess style superhero. And that ultimately the Peter Pa style ending where all the witches are in heaven as eternal preteens fighting monsters is a good end, rather than a kind of nightmare scenario the majority of magical girl shows would hold as the kind of thing the heroines fight tooth and nail against.

It's not a stupid opinion anon, but I would call for the show being an aesop on how peter pan syndrome is bad, on the argument that they.... all end pretty bad, actually. And interestingly, IIRC a lot of the witches weren't young.
Goddess Madoka herself would some kind of bodhisattva-like figure in this, which makes sense. Obession being bad karma and all. Hell, maybe there is some sort of KB-like spin to demons in some buddhist sects (demons actually farming humans's passions).

Pic more or less related.

Agree with that. I think it IS meant to be a (partial?) deconstruction, but for other reasons.

I claim Madoka isn’t a deconstruction not to neg it, but because I think its intentions are just a lot more straightforward than people expected for a show that outwardly gritty, so what some take as “deconstruction” is just Urobutcher going “lol wouldn’t it be cool if we gave the magical girl a deagle and one of them git their head bitten off by the monster?”

It's amazing that someone used so many words just to demonstrate that they don't know what a deconstruction is.

"Deconstruction" conveniently lacks a definition so no one can prove retards wrong when they witter on about it, and can instead act smug that sensible people, "don't get it".

What are some ways to put a new twist on the magical girl genre besides making it real dark like Madoka? What would you do in a Madoka campaign, BTW, and any advice for designing original witches?

Same as any other twist. Take an identifying characteristic of being a "magical girl", bend it a little, and ask yourself if it still feels like a magical girl at all.

Ex.
>"Magical girls are usually preteen girls dressed in frilly outfits"
Twist: Boys are now targeted as potential magical warriors, frilly outfits and all
>"Magical girls should fight exclusively with magical powers"
Twist: They use firearms empowered by magical bullshit due to how nasty the monsters have gotten
>"Magical girls should be sweet, kind, and above all nice"
Twist: The girls chosen as magical girls are actually troublemaking punks with massive attitude problems that would kneecap you for calling them "sweet little girls"

The good thing about magical girls is that the genre just goes in all kinds of directions that you could put any twist on it and probably amuse your players. Make the magical girls middle aged mothers and grandmas fighting to keep their families out of this nonsense. Make the magical girls PR mascots for a company of monster exterminators that helps ease the public's worries while the unpaid interns and grunts are the ones who are doing the real fighting. Make the magical girl warriors into witches who summon freaky man-eating insects instead of cutesy moeblob creatures to fight on their behalf. Make them mech pilots who use a combination of super advanced puppetry and magic bullshit to fight kaiju sized behemoths on their turf. You can go fucking wild with that shit if you understand the basic concept, frankly.

>What are some ways to put a new twist on the magical girl genre besides making it real dark like Madoka?

Ask /a/
No, seriously, as long as you're doing a campaign you should probably stick to the actual genre as it is.

That being said...

>rule is that MGs are the emissaries of sorts of a "another" realm they start not knowing shit about
Make them the "aliens" from the start.
(i think maybe some precure series tried to do that actually)

>it's all about transformation at will
Make it an unwanted transformation.

>they have to hide their MG identities
The identity they have to hide to each other is actually their own normal one.

>What would you do in a Madoka campaign, BTW, and any advice for designing original witches?

Madoka is all about wishes and their awful consequences, and they generally are obsessive if altruistical.

Truth is, I think they kinda got it covered in the original series. We have Homura yuri-tinted one, Sayaka's tragic love, Kyoko and her parents. I'm not sure if you could really break the mold here.
