Have you ever played in a game where your DM used Passive Perception instead of asking for rolls?
>>98690208We all live in a simulation.t. schizo.
>>98690208>Have you ever played the game by the rules? Fuck off.
Velma is looking exceptionally fuckable.
>>98690208As a DM/GM I use passive perception constantly. It's an excellent rule and I am tired pretending that it isn't.>>98690649In my anecdotal experience most people that run and/or play D&D have never read the rules and play mostly by vibes and occasionally checking the srd when in doubt.
>>98690722>most people that run and/or play D&D have never read the rulesYeah, that's why I told him to fuck off
>>98690660>implying she NEVER looks fu....Oh, no, wait, I've just remembered some of the more recent stuff. As you were, guys. I have some forgetting to do.
>>98690660Fred looks jewish here.
>>98691060>a gigachad looks jewishbegone tinyhat.
>>98690660She kinda does, but don't worry, they fixed it in the remake.
>>98690208I don't think the comic is joking about perceptual abilities. It's joking about the fact that in older animation, the contrast between background objects and objects that were going to move was quite stark. Velma is breaking the fourth wall and can see that the book that will move is not animated like a background object.
>>98691418Thanks ChatGPT
>>98690208I actually might have, I just didn't notice.
>>98690208Yes
>>98691068I think he's talking about the fact he doesn't look like a gigachad.
I don't like rolling for my players or passive checks that feel like they bypass my players, so what I do is I have a dice tower that drops the dice into an area where only I can see the results
>>98691060Not necessarily (Ashkenazic) Jewish, but definitely kind of Eastern European. It's that weird combination of a strong nose and vaguely East-Asian eyes. He looks like his ancestors came from one of those places that changed hands between Slavs and Mongolians a lot.
>>98690208Yes.E.g. Passive test to notice that the background noise of the forest is now quieter than it was earlier, success lets that character (and any other that they tell about it) make an active test to discover that there is now no noise coming from behind them. They then have a chance to realise that they are being stalked by something that scares the local creatures.
>>98690208I'm such a dm. When there isn't a varied stress or pressure or when it's not just a single action, I like using what the passive. "The thing you can reliability do". It also rewards people for actually taking skills. When it's an active situation I usually don't allow it.
>>98690208I do it here-and-there. Mostly as a "Do you qualify for this roll?" check. If someone's passive perception is too low, then they don't even get to make the roll. It keeps the party from just rolling 4 different perception checks. Even at a +0 that's better than 2 rolls at a +8.
>>98690452he's right
I like the Alexandrian's approach to this where you start with a base of 5 instead of 10 before adding the Wisdom modifier, and that you liberally apply disadvantage to the score as well. If my players aren't saying that they're being vigilant while they go about their business, I subtract a further 5 from their Passive Perception.
>>98690208What the fuck is passive perception?
>>98705914That's a good way to breed the habit of just goingSo you're saying the 14 int wizard and the level 5 professional fighter are too stupid to remember to be vigilant in a dungeon if the players doesn't literally say "we look around for ambushes" every 5 minutes?
>>98690208>one of the books is disguised as the switchSurely it should be that the switch is disguised as one of the books.
>>98691418https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9P8sYX0Bpo
>>98706020If they waltz into a dungeon or a shady part of a city without saying "we're on the lookout for something weird/dangerous" as a baseline level of vigilance, then not noticing easy things is on them and they get what they deserve. Once that level of vigilance is established, I don't see a reason to make them keep saying it over and over again every five minutes. That'd only change if there is something else that would make them particularly distracted, like they're investigating something else in particular or they've taken a rest and aren't on guard duty.

>>98690660Frankly everyone looks fuckable in that artist’s style, I’m amazed they don’t do porn
>>98705914Kek I had a DM like you once>Erm you didn't "say" that you check the ceiling, so a falling trap gets youSo I wrote out a script of all the inane little things that can usually go unsaid. I would repeat it every single time we entered a room. Took about 5 minutes each time. After the third time he had a melty, so I instead just started saying "I do the script"
>>98690208what system?

>>98690660>Velma is looking exceptionally fuckable.>>98708126>Frankly everyone looks fuckable in that artist’s style, I’m amazed they don’t do pornI'm pretty sure the artist is a gay man. So it's interesting that he draws women so hot.
>>98710017Based>>98706129Nope, to open the secret passage you actually have to read a quote from the book.
>>98697013It just saves time. Sure it's fun to keep players on their toes and ask them to roll perception when actually nothing will happen but inevitably shit like >>98710017 happens and holds up the game. If players can reasonably see something in a room they see it. Also stops stupid stuff like fucking everyone rolling 1s and 2s and spend the next 10 minutes trying to perceive something that would be blatantly obvious to anyone in that situation.
>>98690208The exchange goes like so: he says>Everyone roll PerceptionAnd without touching my dice I say>Passive 22And either I'm the one who usuallh sees/hears what happens or I get blind sided and the other players scramble. Sometimes while laughing like mad.
>>98705914Castrate yourself
>>98690660Velma's design is so mid that she was memed into being a dyke
>>98690208When did that thing stop being a thing in cartoons?
>>98710176>I'm pretty sure the artist is a gay manGiving his twitter a brief look it's pretty much confirmed for me.
>>98710017How, in your opinion, do I make Perception meaningful? I'm not trying to "gotcha" my players, but I also don't want every other ambush to fail because the Cleric has a passive perception of 17 and I didn't roll exceptionally well for the enemy stealth check, or for an entire dungeon's worth of traps to be useless for the same reason.
>>98713393During the switch to digital animation. That effect is the result of the fact that older animation is cells photographed over a matte painted background each created with paints with different color palettes.>>98713783NTA, but I find passive perception works best if it is based on 25% result of a roll + perception modifiers (i.e. in a d20 system it would be 5+perception modifiers). If passive perception is higher than the active perception DC the perception check auto passes, but if it is within 5 of the active perception DC it alerts the character to make a perception check. For example, your cleric with a +7 perception modifier would auto pass any perception check with a DC of 12 or less, alerted to make an active perception check if the DC is 13 to 17 which they would fail between 25% and 45% of the time). If actively searching the Cleric would still auto pass any DCs below 12 but would now make rolls to to beat DCs between 13 and 27.
