But if I was going to lean into something like that I'd look towards the original chaos marines melding of armour and mutations for inspiration; it's a lot less spikes and skulls everywhere, and might give more transitional bits to work with as textures? That and look towards the various fairly low detail but at least conceptually there war machines of khorne for Epic. Should be able to pull key details from that.
Same with stuff like the various iterations of the juggernaut from its original potato-dog form to the brutal then more sleek versions, and how the plating of armour works on that.

Yeah, wandering monsters, peasants and mercenaries that could either become enemies or join one of the players are all things that work extremely well in 3e.
I've played scenarios where a pitched battle against another player turned into a temporary truce as we fought back a zombie uprising.
GMs are also invaluable for roleplaying within games, as they can make any NPC interactions richer and more interesting than any random table or scripted behaviour could.

Something like this could be a callback to the more industrial aspect of Khorne, which is more interesting than just having it covered in blood and spikes, or the even less appealing nuGW aesthetic of drowning everything Khornate in golden trim.

For fantasy there's Warhammer Renaissance, which takes the best parts of 4-5th edition Warhammer and adds some quality of life improvements from later editions. It has army lists for everything from 2nd to 8th editions, extremely flexible and fluffy army building and is constantly updated, with yearly balance patches and additions that don't break the whole thing.
It's a pretty good game, the only big downsides is that the player base is small, new players prefer getting into old world because it's officially supported (even though the rules are worse for the most part) and you need to have a facebook account as the main forum and rules downloads are over there.

They were usually just first drafts and practice models so that's why they look like that aka shit.

One weird case is the artificer armours, originally not even called that which I strongly suspect were a bunch of test ideas for how marines were supposed to look that then got shoved out the door later on to fill a release slot.
They have a lot of mixed details of really early designs yet were released I think about the time the Mk.7s were out. They're also slightly awkward and rough like they're playing around with things, more C100 type marine detailing in places. They also turned up painted without fanfare long before (about a year if I remember right?) release and mail order codes seem to have been available.

Like here you see they're already after Terminators got defined properly, despite looking like already dated sculpts by this point (we're into second wave revised metal beakies with more consistent less lumpy looks), and then they don't turn up in the catalogues until much later.

>>98695817
Sounds interesting, I will check it. The "balance patches" make me cautious though, I really wish there were more games that reached the state of internal balance that is found good enough by their creators and not touched anymore. I miss the times when games were tweaked a bit to remove the rough edges and then preserved in amber.

There's certainly nothing stopping you merging a bestial demon with a vehicle but as others have said their vehicles tend to be more industrial, metal and fire like the Juggernauts but more vehicle shaped.

I tankshocked a warrior blob with the damaged fire prism, and miraculously the cross failed their leadership, but in turn 6 they regrouped.

It would costs me 320€ of metal hormagaunts to make my 1,000 points army legit.

>Adeptus Titanicus 1st ed, Space Marine Epic Battles
Titan focus, unrefined, kind of cool that way. I fucked up and didn't buy a shellback box decades ago.
>Space Marine 2nd ed, Titan Legions
Added in rules for orks, squats, eldar, chaos, tyranids. Might have been redesigns of WD articles, wasn't reading it at the time. Played this one a lot as a kid, very fiddly. Most units have their own special rules and templates. Lots of counters and cards, force building felt very tactile, especially Tryanid synapsis builds. Probably plays faster if its now a bunch of 12 year olds doing it wrong but rolling for each stand in a company of marines to wiff most of the shooting is not very appealing. Titan cards and hit locations are still cool, similar to 2nd ed vehicle cards or Man O' War ship cards.
>3rd Ed Epic 40K
Mixed bag, very different from 2nd. Streamlines a lot, I like it, bothered a lot of people at the time. The air support sequence, strategy cards and victory points were neat. Blast markers and the firepower table are good design.
>4th Epic Armageddon
Added a good amount of detail back in but still keeps a lot of the good ideas from 3rd. Probably the best compromise, likely the easiest to find or build a community for. There was an australian(?) HH variant of this one that was popular for a while but I lost track of it.

>>98704380
I've been working on at least compiling all the RT related stuff from WDs into one file. Major issue is that RT changed a lot, so it's not like 2e where the core rules with a ton of additions.
>>
>>98704380
Rogue Trader with Battle Manual is basically just 2nd edition.
>>
>>98704380
It's gonna be very difficult to get something like that. Like the other anon said, RT changed a lot across the years, so you'd either end up with a bunch of rules that contradict or replace each other or having to make a compromise to decide what stuff stays in and what goes out.
RT also tends to have its army lists all bundled together, rather than separated by codex, with books like Chapter Approved and the Compendium collating most of the WD supplementary material. Not as convenient as a BB, but still better than needing 8+ books and a bunch of mags.

As the other anons say, there's not really a single version of RT. It changed a lot over the years so it has the same issue as 3-7th. People do not agree in what's the best way to play it.

Meanwhile, of the old editions 2nd was the most self contained and consistent over the years. It also had a significant amount of fans that didn't stop playing it. Just as 3rd was released, a group created in 1998 the 2nd ed Battle Bible which it's still being updated today. See here the latest version from a few months ago:
You can even find in Facebook groups about it in every western country. Plenty of quality videos about it in youtube too.

Ironically for me, I never liked the 2nd ed. rules, aesthetics, the starter set, or the billion tokens/cards/templates involved. But It's beyond doubt the most successful of all old editions among players.
>>
>>98703142
That's the prices we have to deal with here. Every seller "knows what they're selling" so they have piles of lead rotting away with 0 sell in 3 years. Not aesthetically though as I say, which is often the biggest driver in many grog things.

The 2nd to 3rd transition from "red era, mostly metal and really simple grey plastics" to 3rd and 4th's various tastes of "grunge" and "gothic" along with increased multipart and cross-compatible plastics was a huge shift we haven't really seen since. Yes 3rd-7th is arguably one long era (one I left with the launch of 5th myself), and 8th-11th is another era, but it's aesthetically not as sharp a line in the sand.

And I'm saying this as one of the biggest proponents of "4th editions rules and 3rd.5 codices" on here, my thread saying "yo we should make a battle bible which actually tidies up the rules using known FAQ and errata" lead to the abomination of the /fourk/ threads I had no part in.

I'm just saying why I think when I go to events there's several games of 2nd and not too many of 3rd/4th, 2nd feels like a more deliberate act of nostalgia at the moment, it takes longer and you can lean into what you think the aesthetics of the time were, Goblin Green bases and all.
>>
>>98709058
>Not aesthetically though
Not mechanically either.
>>
>>98709058
It's weird how popular 2nd is.
Sure, army sizes were small so it's not so hard to collect minis of that era besides a few outliers (like land speeders and land raiders)
But actually getting all what you need to play 2nd is a mess. The Battle Bible is nice, but far from enough. Players need special dice, more template types than in 3-7th, and a fuckton of cards and tokens than are difficult to obtain.
It has the biggest barrier to entry of any edition.

3-7th is limited by nobody agreeing on what ruleset and codexes to play. Lots of people like you mention 4th with 3.5 codexes, but those leave out tons of units and flavor added before and later. It's a pretty limited snapshot of the game, IMO
>>
>>98710449
>Players need special dice, more template types than in 3-7th, and a fuckton of cards and tokens than are difficult to obtain.
None of these is a valid excuse in the age of 3D printing. Scatter and artilery dice are still used in TOW, so are some of the templates. The rest are easily printable, files can be found for free in seconds. If you can't 3D print those accessories, there are PDFs with templates and cards to be print on paper, same with tokens. One day of work gives you all the accessories you need and will last for years.

When 2ed came out though it was this super cool crazy scifi game that parents bought for their kids in the 90s and aesthetically it's WAAAY more colourful than everything that came after it. 3rd onwards is recognisably an earlier version of the game and setting we have today, whereas 2ed seems entirely distinct.

>nta, but I've heard this before. What makes it so important?
Dark Millennium is essentially the Warhammer Magic supplement to 2nd Edition 40K. It gave a deck of powers to each faction (or multiples - Chaos has four and the Imperium has three!) and introduced a system whereby each player drew from a deck of cards to show how hard the winds of magic blew that turn. Then they could use those cards to power up their psyker's powers or try to nullify those of the enemy.

Additionally, it expanded the roolz for Victory Points and included more roolz for vehicles and had extra datafaxes for them.
>>
>>98711233
It was pretty much the other half of the game, even if you had the codexes.
Just judge for yourself: https://www.chaosbunker.de/en/2026/01/28/warhammer-40000-2nd-edition-dark-millenium-expansion-set/

Even with the Battle Bible around for the datafaxes, there's lots of cards and templates that need to be in hand to have a proper game of 2nd

Not going to be near a printer until tomorrow but the items listed in red work for you?
The counters are going to be the time consuming part, connecting the thud gun template looks like it'll take a minute too.
What are you going to do for me? Something like friendly engagement instead of being snide and bitter about it, not trying to weasel some sort of gottcha about how it doesn't count or whatever?
>>
>>98711340
what do you mean? You don't have a professional carboard printer at your home?
It's been more than an hour and you didn't even start 3d printing?
And you're not even listing all the stuff needed! Don't you dare print stuff in b&w or without the proper images like those PDFs at the Anvil Project.
lazy, lazy anon
>>
>>98711379
So you're not going to engage faithfully when called on it. Sad.
>>
>>98711127
Easily in the top five wargame sets of all time, honestly, only thing that could've made it better is like a cardstock dreadnaught to face against the deff dread maybe, almost perfect starter set otherwise
>>
>>98711383
You can't talk about being earnest after pretending that printing a satisfactory set of 2nd accesories is easy and we're lazy for not doing it.
It's bullshit, or you have the typical low standards of printfags and /awg/ players
>>
>>98711429
Oh you had no intention of accepting anything anyone put forward. Thanks for confirming. You're just a sour grapes sort of guy.
I'll make some on my own time and post about it while you continue to mald. :)

says the uppity dipshit that posted this >>98711096
You get what you deserve, and your likely half-assed attempt at a 2nd ed set will be laughtable and unplayable by anyone with standards.

Keep going.

Check the top of the thread anon, it's already done. I put all the WD RT articles in there as well as all the third party material from the time that I could find.

>>98705868
Its fun. It's a skirmish game for sure, maybe a dozen figures per side tops. Percentile based, looks more complicated that it actually is. Rules book is a bit of a mess. IIRC it's still in production.

Anyone got any interesting lists or wargear combos for 2nd ed?
>>
>>98716160
Chaos Lord with every mark of chaos for the LOLs. Give him a jump pack wargear card while you're at it
>>
>>98716514
Isn't that just discount abaddon? And I thought chaos couldn't get jump packs in 2nd ed.
>>
>>98716527
>discount abaddon
YES except he also gets frenzy and is a psyker.
>And I thought chaos couldn't get jump packs in 2nd ed.
You're correct, but it's a generic wargear card so IDK how you'd wanna rule that

Not beardy but just kinda thematic and funny exploitation of how veteran sergeants (all space marine characters really) get access to special weapons. ostensibly so they can take bolters which for characters are a special weapon but...
Space Marine Assault combat squad.
V.sarge takes a flamer
Special weapon marine takes a flamer.
Everyone also takes hand flamers in addition to their bolt pistols.
Throw in some chainswords for cheap parry in close combat if you want, you can still set people on fire with the hand flamers in close combat.
Bounce in, Burn Everything.

It's overly expensive and largely not good compared to the optimal loadouts. But, fuck it, might be the perfect solution to some players and their love of huge screen units or hiding units.

I don't think sergeant can get special weapons, at least not tactical one. I really liked this idea though, always wanted to field multiple flamers per squad. Assault Marines can do that but it gets even more expensive since you'd need to buy whole squad.

Over in the codex: ultramarines

Wolf Guard with "oops all assault cannons" for maximum chances of losing your friends

>>98717866
Ooh can I mix this with Angels of Death codex?

>>

No
>>
>>98717994
Technically, >>98718162 is correct, since that entry comes from the Ultramarines Codex, but if you look on page 85 of Angels of Death, you'll see we have a similar entry in our book.

If the Veteran Sergeant opts to take a flamer - and he can, since the language of the Second Edition books says "any model" may do so - then he robs one of the squadboyz of his opportunity to take a special weapon. Since a Veteran Sergeant can have a single Wargear Card, though, if you were so inclined, you could use that to buy him a combi-flamer ("Combi-Weapon" is a Wargear Card) for extra burnination.

The Combat Squad roolz from White Dwarf basically let you take just five guys instead of ten, and lays out how to make them veterans, devastators, etc. - including the option to upgrade the sergeant to a Veteran Sergeant.
>>
>>98718162
Figured as much, why do Ultramarines get better sergeants anyway
>>98718214
Oh that's right, the combi weapon. You could put 3 flamers into assault squad that way, then split it into two combat squads right.
I don't like the idea of sergeant taking special heavy weapon for himself, makes him look like a douche.
>>
>>98717915
I thought cyclone missile spam and blowing your wad early was the go?

Never thought of that... hmmm

Codex compliance my dear sunny boy!
