>Thread Question:
What do you think of the Tomb Kangz refresh? What army do you want to see refreshed next?
>>
>>98696467
Sure, but I really like the new sculpts. The chariots I may actually love. I am considering doing a chariot based army.
>>
>>98696472
New skellingtons look cool just in time for October
Refresh the noodle Wood Elf dragon

>>
>>98696485
You better hope for new rules in that AJ for light chariots because they're pretty shit.
>>
>TQ
I have nightmares of assembling necrons and death rattles, the arms look fragile as fuck and I fear these things are gonna break easy just trying to cut them out of the sprues. They’re rather boring individually but they look good when ranked up, which almost every kit has had a problem with since tow launched. Again though they look quite boring on an individual level, I don’t know if it’s the true scale or the fact that they’re not entirely naked.
>what do you want to see refreshed next
I’m pretty apathetic to new releases honestly. I’ve spent more on the ajs(big mistake) than I have for actual minis since tow launched. I guess seeing some of the old cidatel stuff for renegade crowns would be nice.

Was it ever worth to take the anvil of doom bellow 2500 points?
>>
>>98696526
Yes, early on in TOW dwarf comp players developed a strat where they used an anvil and the dwarf beer cart along with marching column to sling shot a massive block of heavy dwarf infantry 27 inches into the enemy deployment zone on turn 1
>>
>>98696516
They refreshed the Deathrattle kit a second time (same design, new sprues) and it actually went together quite nicely overall and didn’t feel like you were constantly on the verge of breaking your model. I think this kit will be a lot of the same. I hope some of the chest accessories are optional, they look sculpted on but I know the sculpts they use for these pictures are technically different than what will be in the box.
>>
>>98696472
>What do you think of the Tomb Kangz refresh?
Magnificent. I've been waiting for something like this for twenty years.
>>
That is it, biting the bullet and grabbing the TOW launch Tomb Kings box for the old sculpts ASAP. My other armies can be sidelined to get the sculpts of my teens!
>>
So, I've been reading the old army of the Lichemaster list (which I'll assume will be the inspiration for the barrow kingdoms).
It has some nice diversity in units that make it feel distinct from VCs and TKs.
>Shadow Druids
Ethereal Necromancers
>Barrow King
Sort of a chariot tomb king
>Simulacra
S5, T5, W3 living statues with a 5+ ward, core unit
>Ghosts
Underwhelming banshee
>Skeleton warriors
Can take javelins, I'm hoping the AoI allows both melee or bow skellies
>Embalmed ones
Mummies, not too interesting
>Unquiet Horsemen
Essentially black knights
>Barrow Guardians
Wights/Grave/Tomb Guard in all but name
>Tomb stalker
Monstrous statue, the example army uses a Tomb Scorpion painted like stone
>Glooms
Ghost infantry tarpit, they can't do shit with their WS2, S2, but they're ethereal and have the equivalent of warband, so they won't be going down easily.
They also hate themselves and are always subject to super instability, so they'll die on their own slowly, even outside of combat.
>Winged Nightmare
Flying monster, pretty much a proto varghulf

Of course, I don't think this army will translate 1:1 to ToW. I expect to have chariots added to tale advantage of the new release. The statues could be done by painting some other existing TK model line stone, but I'm doubtful.
There's two possible outcomes, really:
A) the rules team lock in and provide a very fluffy list that is somewhat between VC and TK, and has lots of conversion opportunities, with some callbacks to the old Kemmler list.
B) the rules team fuck it up like with Hordes of Chaos and we get a mediocre Tomb Kings list with emphasis on skeletons and chariots, no access to monsters and probably some regen gimmicks. Sadly, this seems the most likely scenario.

What do you anons expect, hope and fear about this AoI?
>>
>>98696810
half those options wont make it into the AOI at all.
I dont really have any expectations for an AOI at all, if they dropped the ball as hard as they did with hordes of chaos.

Any predictions, hopes or simply wishes for future Armies of Infamy? I hope for the return of Overground Defence to represent ranger encampments, clans that lost their holds and now travel the roads or just a throng moving fast to aid an ally.

I'm writing up something for fun but I'm not an expert on balance, might use it in games against friends:
>limits: no warmachines (including anvils of doom) aside from gyrocopters, no hammerers, iron breakers or iron drakes
>army comp: all characters aside from anvil, rangers and miners with 0-2 per thousand points in core along with quarrelers, warriors and thunderers in special along with 0-1 slayers per thousand points, gyrocopters longbeards and carts in rare
>new hero: Josef Bugman - I think he can be transplanted from the 6.5 book mostly intact
>new unit: Bugman Rangers (0-1 per thousand points upgrade for Longbeards OR a 0-1 per thousand points core choice) - scout, move through cover and maybe skirmish, and lets them buy throwing axes, recommended to model them using warrior bodies
>special rule #1: spring the trap - once per game at the start of your movement phase you can declare this special rule, if you do so in the first turn your vanguard units add +X inches to their vanguard move, if it's in later turn they can add +X to their charge and march moves (I'm thinking 3" added after all other modifiers)
>special rule #2: all your infantry units can buy one of the following special rules combination if they don't already have it: scout and move through cover OR vanguard and ambush (I think +2 points per model since it's dwarfs?)
>special rule #3: all your infantry units can be switched to open order before the game

Hope this wouldn't be broken, I'm fine with it being underpowered since I only play casual.
>>
>>98696810
I imagine that the Barrow Kingdoms AoI will be Skeletons leading Skeletons, though this is largely based on AoS skeletons coming from the “Barrow Kingdoms”. Not to mention this refreshes’ focus is on the new skeletons. Like maybe there will be a profile for a powerful Skeleton dude that (You) gotta make your self to be the general.

WoC at BM level can be tough, especially at that points level. Good selection on the horses and wolvrs, as with skin wolves.

I would downgrade the sorcerer to lvl 1 and give him the ruby ring or swap for an aspiring champion.

The chaos warriors are super fragile at this points. Try to bulk them out to 10 by reducing your points in your hero or swap emtirely for an infantry block of maraudersxwith HW+shield

> Just look at the dwarf cannon stats compared to every other race's cannon
On one hand it makes sense: dwafs are about sticking to what works instead of pushing the tech whenever possible like making the cannon bigger and deal more damage. However since they care so much about reliability they should be able to reroll the misfire table once or something without needing a rune.

At the risk of reigniting the embers of an argument long past, it's not that they nerfed chariots, it's that they nerfed chaos warriors (the guys riding the chariot) and that the comparative advantage of bringing a chariot (utterly worthless outside of on the charge, explodes if anything so much as looks at it, and the impact hits aren't even good) vs. literally anything else in special is just farcical. Why would you ever bring a chariot when chimeras, chosen knights, and dragon ogres exist?
>>
Most paint schemes for Nurgle Daemons I see use white basecoat, followed with green, yellowish brown or creme speed paint and drybrush/highlights.
Do you guys have any idea how to paint them quickly but with black base instead?
I was thinking about drybrushing them extensively with white first and achieve a darker tone this way but I started to wonder if washing them with a dark wash over black base and then simply following with purple drybrush wouldn't give interesting results as well.
>>
>>98698751
start with a purple spray, then dark blue wash, then off-white drybrush (either bone, skin or very pale pink), then the green contrast of your choice, ideally pick two and apply them with a gradient and/or multiple passages to darken certain parts.

Absolutely based move on GW's part.

I think an obvious choice would the High Elf spearmen, silver helms, and archers. The Y2K ones are so bad. And I'm getting to that stage of my gaming career when I want to be the affable older player with an iconic army, you know? Maybe I'd even do them blue like the studio army.

After that, maybe Empire? The 7E state troops were a huge downgrade, sleeves not puffy enough etc.

I'm interested in how the Tomb Guard refresh will look since they gave the basic skeletons so much armor. They look more like Nehekara Warriors from Total War now than basic bitch naked skeletons. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but GW can still do mostly naked skeletons without them being too fiddly and fragile. They did it with the Sepulchral Guard and they look great.
>>
>>98698995
No, I don't even think the metal inserts are made of any expensive metals
>>
>>98696472

>>98699062
We are in the age of two factory max efficient capitalist GW. I fully expect the pace to be a 2-4 kits refresh for a different faction every 3ish months.
>>
>>98699038
Best skeletons gw has ever done btw
Anyway as for the tomb guard, I genuinely don't know. People had the same question vis a vis the AoS grave guard since they similarly made the basic skeletons very heavily armoured. The grave guard ended up being fairly straightforward, which meant there was honestly not that much difference between the two kits. The barrow guard have bigger shields and more elaborate helmet crests, but honestly that's about it. I like both kits but they should've been differentiated a bit more.
>>
I am saddened at how bad Sepulchural Stalkers are. I can see a use for the Necropolis Knights, but the Stalkers just seem bad all around.
>>
>>98699069
Why is it that GW seems to genuinely make the best looking skeletons of any company? Any other third party undead I look at has weird proportions or the skull looks all fucked up. How hard can it be to sculpt a good looking skull that actually looks at least somewhat realistic? Even Duncan's new range looks like ass between the weird skull shape and the solid plastic chunk that is their loin cloth.
>>
>>98699089
So I have a theory about how the AOS skeletons ended up being the basic skeletons. I think they were intended to only be for Cursed City and that whole Slavic aesthetic was only going to be for that game setting, while the range-wide refresh was going to be more in line with classic Vampire Counts for the general look of Soulblight. But then all the shit happened with Cursed City, it died way before GW intended it to due to production issues, and they pivoted to just using those designs as the whole look for the range.
I bet that originally they were going to be like a semi-elite city guard that only came with Cursed City and standard skeletons would be the more naked ones. Then there wouldn't have been so much similarity between Grave/Barrow Guard and the regular skeletons.
>>
>>98699077
>We are in the age of two factory max efficient capitalist GW.
and that means twice the number of space marines and twice the number of tomb king releases, which means you get one release every 10 years instead of one every 20
>>
>>98699138
the multipart skeletons came way too close after cursed city for them to be a desperate change of manoeuvre
>>
>>98699105
GW have had literal decades of practice to perfect making skulls. Ever since the inception of warhammer skulls have been extremely prevalent.
They also have a very clear vison of what they want a "warhammer" skull to look like.

Most depictions of skulls in their art range from somewhat stylized to extreme, strong defined edges and sharp features.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have archives just of skulls they can look at, from 3d to 2d.
>>
>>98699212
Yes, but it's a skull. It's completely universal and anyone can see those same references. I don't get why GW seems to be the only one to have it down pat while other companies make these weird things that are all fucked up looking. It shouldn't be difficult for even a mediocre 3D modeler to make a good looking skull on par with GW.
>>
>>98699243
the difficult part isn't modelling it but casting it
>>
>>98699243
skulls DO look fucked up irl anon, generally speaking GW just does a very good job with model proportion which is actually their special sauce, not 'detail' like they love to claim in their financial reports. It's knowing what looks right to the eye and not trying to copy anatomical examples or 2D artwork.
>>
>>98699138

They might be as simple as one piece for the entire torso+legs, one bit for each arm and then one for the head.

Don't get fooled with pictures of FDM-printed minis that are supposedly as good as resin-printed minis. FDM quality is MUCH lower than resin printing. FDM is perfect for printing terrain tho, especially if you are not choleric and willing to print slower but with more layers for extra detail. I have boxes full of scenery pieces printed for cents. What brand and model have you bought?
>>
>>98700371
It would be interesting to have some sort of barrow/cairn gimmick instead of Invocation of Nehek, having resurrection be linked to board control and unit positioning would be a fun change of pace. It'd also make a cool scenario.
>Undead player begins the game with 3-4 cairns on the table.
>Each cairn can do a form of resurrection, somewhat better than a regular necromancer, but only for units within 6".
>Cairns can also add new models to existing units, similar to zombies.
>All skeletal units can be upgraded with ambush, and may be deployed within 4" of any cairn when they arrive.
>Any unit with 10 or more unit strength can charge a cairn to collapse the structure and destroy the necromantic ritual that reanimates the undead.
>Once all cairns have been destroyed, the entire army becomes subject to instability and will begin crumbling rapidly.
>>

I'm working on the new ogors for wfg. Physically the models are the same size as the old ogres but the weapons are a problem. Bulls are pretty easy to fix. Because of how the wrist joint is made I recommend gluing the weapons on then cutting them off at the wrist to angle them more inward. I haven't figured out what to do with the ironguts yet other than rank them up in a very specific way.
>>
>>98701456

>>
>>98701151
Vlad is dead, and I don't think Kemmler's been born yet. Depending on the source Mannfred is either at the bottom of Hel Fenn or in hiding. Mundvard, the "Master" of Marienburg, should be around in this era. Dieter Helsnicht is alive, somewhere.

It might be more convenient to look beyond the Empire for notable vampires. Neferata is presumably in the Silver Pinnacle, Walach Harkon is accounted for in the northern Border Princes, Luthor Harkon is active albeit all the way over in Lustria. There may be others in the Dark Lands.

There's a decent chance Kemmler is around. We don't really know how old he is but he was already powerful and old by 2401. So he might have been doing something during Magnus' time. It would also be nice to see a modern Kemmler because the old murder hobo is a fun guy.

Is there an army or armies that you love everything about with one exception, the exception being enough that you did not buy the army(ies)? For me it is Tomb Kings. Loved when they had their armybook in 6e, but I was broke and unable to afford them. When a LGS opened up I had a chance to read the 8e Armybook and look at the boxes and fell back in love, but the play style just did not mesh with me. A few years back, I yearned for the Egyptian skeleton aesthetic and designs and bought into the Mantic Empire of Dust for display purposes, but they just lacked the charm and whimsy of the GW TK line. While late to ToW, I read the Arcane Journals and loved the content of the Kings. Loved the looks and designs of the miniatures, even as people made complaints about their age. Now, I am tempted to buy into the army before the old line is fully OoP, but the play style is just so unfun to me that I can not bring myself to do it. Anyway, do you Anons have any similar stories with an army or armies you like?

Dwarfs. I actually like practically everything about them, their look, fluff and the concept of their gameplay. But when I fought an actual battle beyond BM size, at least above 500, it was apparent there was only one way to use them: Sit there and wait for the enemy to come to you. Amazing if it happens, appalling if not.
>>
>>98702094
As a lifetime Dwarf player, that is so understandable. You basically just have to footslog under the cover of artillery and missile units or castle up. Beer carts and the Anvil can give you some bonus mobility, as well as taking Drilled on things like Warriors and Longbeards. Miners tend to surprise a lot of my opponents, as does tossing an explosive cart or two near melee units who can suddenly stand and shoot charging enemies.
>>
>>98701980
The Vampire Counts. I really liked the look of "The Undead" from the old 5th edition book with snippits of each army. I liked the idea of a necromancer and Skeleton Warrior leaders, or as we know now, Wights.

However the 5th edition focus on Vampires put me off as a kid and the 6th edition book for them was, for the time of my age, pretty spooky for me. I still find the art of the mutilated fairy extremely gnarly, even for warhammer.
>>
>>98701532
To be fair, all the Vampire's were dead, and that didn't stop them coming back or having rules. Most of the Ork named characters like Grom or Azag were dead, or missing and presumed dead. Bretonnians like Repanse or Odo are also characters who weren't alive for the "current" timeline, yet had rules. Granted that was back when Warhammer felt like it took more after historicals, so I do think your right that it's unlikely modern GW will add dead characters to the game. I think if they bring back counts they should focus on something new instead crawling back to Sylvania again. I'd like to some more based on the other vampire branches with some characters for them.
>>
What causes the winds to split from raw chaos stuff into 8? Does it just happen? Is it some relic of the portals? Have there been multiple explanations over the game's lifespan, like one pre end times and one (probably stupid) one from the end times?

I honestly have to believe whoever was in charge of votann was in charge of making the hellsmith and nu-dwarves for AOS. Its the only possible explanation for it. Even Khadrons have more sensible gun designs (I also think these are the best dwarves have looked while bracing with a gun but thats a different convo). They just reek of 40k design that has completely failed votaan and, in my opinion, the necromunda squatts, and now this stuff. Its like the people behind the units and the hero's were in completely different creative spaces.

I think the bigger issue with dwarfs in general since 7th edition is the lack of art direction and identity.
They want to make them steampunk, but also dieselpunk, but also Norse inspired, but also employing only metal and stone, but also very ornamented, but also whimsical and also having clear callbacks to classic Warhammer, and it all ends up so saturated and aimless that it looks like crap.
In their endless struggle to stay away from stereotypical and time proven dwarf designs, GW keep finding new ways of making the shittiest dwarfs possible.

If there are no vampires or necromancers in this AJ, I see some problems. If I understand it correctly, liche priests aren't necromancers per se - they wake up their legions, not animate corpses - the spell was cast by Nagash long time ago, they just activate it. In other words a priest can't go to the local graveyard and just raise dead. This may be a disaster lore-wise.

You don't even have to do that, you just start with the basic shapes (cylinder for body, sphere for head) and then sculpt with mirroring mode on. Then you just sculpt one half of the model and when you're done, slightly repose the other half. I've been learning to sculpt with some squigs and it's been easier than I ever thought it would be. >What do you think of the Tomb Kangz refresh?
Same as all other TOW refreshes so far really, they're inoffensive and have no major fuckups which is a pleasant surprise from modern GW, so I'm happy with the overall direction of the edition, but imo they're still over-detailed for troops, not easily convertible or kitbashable, and slightly too non-heroic scale for me. And way overpriced like all GW kits these days. So like all other releases so far, I won't be purchasing. If they were cheaper and styled similarly to the new BB night goblin team, I'd be all over them.

Minor gripes for the skellies: they seem to have a weird elongated gap between their pelvis and rib cage that I can't unsee. The hand weapons would have benefited from variety e.g. clubs, axes. And the HW unit champion is not doing anything to dispel my theory that GW is blatantly copying other creators' designs (picrel) and relying on a defense of "if you complain then you're admitting you copied our IP" (which would be correct lol). Has also happened with the MK2 HH marines and another one that I can't remember recently, copied detail for detail from 3rd party sculpts.

>What army do you want to see refreshed next?
Any legacy army, since I'm only interested in rules and expansions from GW and not so much the minis.

Well, you can take orc mobs and one black orc mob (if you have a blorc general) in core, and they're perfectly fine to build your army around. Get some boar boys and chariots and you're good. O&Gs have a pretty wide roster of stuff that mostly works pretty well, so you can definitely make a good orc army if you want to. The only thing you're missing is artillery if you're really strict about not even having goblin crew.

According to the old barrow army lore, the people of the barrows had some form of necromantic rituals in their burial site. Their warriors were buried fully clad in weapons and armour, expecting to eventually come back and be ready for battle. Technically they should be able to reanimate without s necromancer, though having one wouldn't hurt either.

>1500p game, beastmen vs empire.

We rolled the meeting engagement scenario in the core book and came up with a fun theme for a board being a river crossing both needed to pass/control, making it a monument of glory to have a reason to hold it as well.
Pretty fun and narrative heavy game in terms of the layout and the set up.
It was pretty close in terms of the points in the end, with me losing with around a 250p difference. Gore and glory were aplenty but with some unlucky rolls my forces were slain or driven back, but not after leaving only most of his forces slain, making his general and demigryph knights the only ones left on the board on his side at the end of the game.

Pre measuring is unfun and takes away from any game's experience. There's nothing as fun as learning to measure by eye, pulling off critical cannon shots through guesswork and wasting a turn of shooting after discovering your target was out of range.
A lot of issues with artillery could be fixed by removing pre measuring, hell, dwarves could become an army with very high skill base and ceiling if they only buffed their cannons in exchange for the measuring change.

I think skills-based betting is less entertaining than both luck-based betting and mindgames-based betting.

In my experience the lack of premeasuring was only satisfying in that brief period when both you and your opponent are inexperienced enough to fail at it.

NTA but I agree. It adds to the drama of the game and to the story being told. It can turn the battle in your favour once you 'get your eye in', adding to the tension in a fun way.

The most common case I hear against guessing ranges is "I shouldn't be penalised for not being able to guess ranges as well as my opponent, it's an artificial handicap", which is not a position I've ever understood. Surely it's part of the point of the game, and surely it only takes a couple games to learn how to eyeball within a few inches of your target. I can't imagine there are people out there who simply cannot learn that skill even after multiple games, so I can only assume they don't want to try? Not sure if that's too uncharitable.

>>98704645
>skills-based
I don't think I understand how learning to eyeball ranges is different to other skills that are generally accepted as part of the game and the responsibility of the player to git gud at, e.g. learning to use screening, baiting charges, how & when to use a refused flank or whatever. I'm open to having my perspective changed though.

>I don't think I understand how learning to eyeball ranges is different to other skills that are generally accepted as part of the game
the other skill is just planning ahead, simple logical thinking, not something that comes exclusively from experience, or from cheating, because if you remove premeasuring people still measure indirectly through the fixed deployment distances and known movement values; even the most noble-hearted people just can't simply shut down their brains to the fact they know what are the measures involved in the game.
It's not unpalatable because it's a skill that's difficult to master, but because it's only ever difficult to newcomers and because artillery gets balanced around this theoretical rarity to guess ranges correctly, but in practice it only ever meant that they were buffed to insane degrees, and were still way too reliable.
>>
>>98704645
But anon, everything in wargaming is a skill, it's just that most of them are either something we've all become quite proficient at or they've been solved by third parties and everyone just copies them.
List building is a skill.
Army deployment is a skill.
Target priority is a skill.
Movement and positioning is a skill.
Yeah, the game can be a bit of a gamble most of the time, even the most solid of plans is subject to the whim of the dice, but that doesn't take away from the fact tha t the game requires different skills.
Things like removing pre measuring, simplifying scenarios, standardising objectives and prioritising pitched battles have been ways in which the game hasstreamlined the skillset needed to play it, to the point where it feels like list building is the single most important thing; your game depends on how good your units are and how well you're optimising your points expenditure.

When making a character, I remember how blueballed I felt after reading the warhammer Witchhunter trilogy. I remember really liking the inital feel of the POV witchhunter, a pragmatic witchhunter but one who had refined tastes in the arts, I think it could lead to a lot of interesting encounters. Someone who strives for the elegent, but recognizes the necessity of the rough and tumble. But to my horror, over the next few books he became super generic action-man without any really notable traits. it didnt go into his relationship with religion and the church, it literally just felt like a day job for him, his religiosity or unorthodoxy didn't play a squint of a point. His Refined artistic pallete was completely abandoned and he wasnt even a particularly good investigator even though he started out shrewd. He kind of just fell where the plot needed him... Best you could say was that he was an ok fighter and had some institutional connections., but he didnt have the fanatical grit of soloman kane or the artistic boldness of a Montaigne.

It was such a fall from grace. I think that really made me want to keep the stronger atributes of my character purer. A slightly snobbish gentry outrider who wants to preserve the finer things in life but does not want to loose sight the practical realities of life. A sort of constructive pragmatist.

It's interesting because I feel like this range has an odd mix of pretty classic dwarfy and very 'out there' aos designs, and then some in the middle.
Personally I like the more classic-looking models (queen on foot, king on foot, artillery), I like the more out-there ones (throne-boat, the golems), but the ones that are kind of a mix of both look absolurely fucking terrible (warriors, gunners, valayan guard though to be fair the valkyrie helm one is midly better). The runewright is the only model that imo succesfully combined both the older and newer design cues.
Also this is without even considering the fact that this army also has fyreslayers still taped onto the side who are a whole other thing visually too
