So did anyone actually play it, or did everyone just kvetch about it?
I ran this adventure for my group and they loved it. I had to beef up the human villain with some magic items in order to make her.a credible threat, but nobody got inflated or transformed at all because it's actually quite easy to avoid if you're a competent OSR player. Our magical girl was able to turn the evil tree into a good guy and "No nonconsensual orgies under Friendship Tree!" remains a in-joke between us years later.

One of the nice things about the OSR is broad compatibility between systems means that the specific system you run doesn't lock you out of broader ecosystem. In this specific campaign, I asked the players to all pick a character from a past campaign they wanted to play again. One of them picked her magical girl character, and it only took me a few minutes of searching to find an OSR-compatible magical girl class that would work with a few tweaks.

The shark jump happened with Mork Borg and Shadowdark has been the nail in the coffin there. Market capture is fucked like that. So some of the people who actually play will cycle back to older products or game makers because the actual enthusiasts are still making things and playing games. Just at a much slower rate than whatever the light flavour of the week is that can have content churn made so fast everyone gets sick of it.
