Magic the Gathering thread focused on universes within content. No positive of neutral posting about UB content.

>how do I search for non-UB cards?
On Scryfall "-is:ub"
On EDHREC selecting "Universes Beyond" under Card Filters hides them.

>Can I play UB cards even if I hate them?
You can do whatever you want, but you shouldn't contribute to the enshittification of this game. More people taking a stance against UB means WotC are more likepy to notice the dislike for it.
Proxy them if you must (ideally and in-universe characters), or wait for them to get in-universe reprints as a few already have.

>TQ
What does everyone think of preedh? Or timepiece formats in general?
>>
>>98702105
confession: i kinda like the hexhaven factions more than the strixhaven factions

i know emrakul destroys hexhaven but i would love that a surviving group go to another plane as refugee.

id love for them to go to alara. would give WOTC a reason to visit my favorite plain a second time.

fatehold in bant
konstrari and vigorbloom in naya
theorix in esper
stingerquill in grixys

im aware the whole point was to kill off the white male jace and replace it with something superior, a non human non white female.
>>
>>98702122
you could even take the strixhaven charas that have one color in common with hex to match a shard and put them in there for any reason really
>TQ
as for timepiece formats I find locked cardpools kinda boring after a while. maybe one day the powercreep will be too much for me and I'll stop playing with cards printed directly as eternal legal only on top of other restrictions
>>
>>98702122
>i know emrakul destroys hexhaven but i would love that a surviving group go to another plane as refugee.
There's so much about the Echoverse that shouldn't have been destroyed and it's really vague as to what's going to survive
>>
>>98702105
I don't like UB, but if a card has mechanics I like I'm still gonna grab it for a deck. The aesthetics are secondary to the cards being game pieces.

>but if a card has mechanics I like I'm still gonna grab it for a deck
That's because you are not an ensouled human, you are an insect in human form.
>>
>>98703706
Magic WAS aesthetic for a time. But UB doesn't compromise the aesthetic for me any more than, say, the last six-seven years of Magic. Magic has gotten irredeemably ugly.
>>
>>98703706
The person who posted that will instantly buy an Asmongold commander deck tho, so kinda hypocritical
>>
>>98703714
It isn't about an aesthetic, it's about whether you have self control or are a creature of pure base instinct like an insect. You scuttle towards food, you scuttle away from hazards, you are incapable of making a decision that requires restraint and higher thinking.

There's dozens of reasons not to play UB. Playing UB:
>rewards WotC for shitty business practices
>is you paying premium prices to obtain literal ads from other companies
>contributes to WotC getting lazier and lazier because they're not required to come up with anything original or cater to their audience, they can just keep repeatedly cranking the slot machine of other IPs until they hit a jackpot, and they can do so far faster than in universe sets (see Avatar which literally pushed Lorwyn out of a 2025 release last minute)
>contributes to newer players thinking that the state of the game is normal and acceptable
>devalues the game players loved for almost 30 years and brings us closer to a reality where Magic is nothing but crossovers and all original characters and places are gone from new releases

The only reasons to play UB are:
>I like this IP
>I like this card effect

It is insectoid. There is no other way to describe it. Zero capacity to think beyond your immediate impulses and desires. You will consume with no regard for the consequences of your consumption and because you are mentally incapable of understanding the benefits of restraint

It is the 2nd or 3rd time you try to build it. They printed way too many generic tribal staples and now every deck has no reason not to be running Patchwork Banner and Urza's Incubator etc.
But there's still fun to be had. Ashling the Limitless obviously completely changes how elementals play, faeries go heavy on interaction and that can be fun. Pic related plays unlike any other tribal deck by necessity
>>
>>98707006
There are exceptions to the rule, of course.
I have a frog tribal Grolnok deck that is much more mill than tribal, for instance.
But I also have a dragon tribal Karthus deck that plays around haste a fair bit but is still veey much just tribal, and a Elf tribal Myrkul deck which just uses myrkul to make boardwipes and remove less dire against elfball, but is still very much just tribal.
>>
>>98707062
I think everybody should have 1 tribal deck. Again it's only something that get's boring if you have a few of them and begin to realize you have to play all the colorless staples, then the 15 or so obvious includes in your tribe, and then whatever else is a no-brainer for your colors

But if you pick your favorite creature type, you will have fun having 1 deck of tribal
>>
>>98707385
I have 35 decks, so 3 is alright, I think.
My issue with tribal is that they are mostly just "[creature] gets buff" or "do damage/draw/value thing equal to number of [creature] you control". It's much more interesting when it builds on a common mechanic for the tribe, rather than just directly referencing the tribe in the ability. If there is no common mechanic, maybe it shouldn't have tribal support.

>>98702105
mtg lore and worldbuilding were going badly when they decided to do theme park planes, like not ancient greece, not ancient egypt, instead their own worlds. UB was a logical conclusion of that shit, to cash in the consoomers.
>>
>>98707478
True! Standard-legal UB is indeed the newest low in the race towards the bottom of the slop bucket, continuing the trend of such hits as black-border unsets, hat sets and theme park sets.

That's purely your opinion.
>is you paying premium prices to obtain literal ads from other companies
Ontologically speaking advertisements literally do not exist. The Bible is an advertisement.
>contributes to WotC getting lazier and lazier because they're not required to come up with anything original or cater to their audience
And yet they are still making more new cards.
>contributes to newer players thinking that the state of the game is normal and acceptable
Because it is.
>devalues the game players loved for almost 30 years
No that's the fault of the federal reserve and no it's only increased the value of our collections as time ticks by.

It reaply just depends on how many other cards depnd on it having the name. If you don't have any cards that specifically trigger off of firebending, or if you have firebent, then you're fine to just write out what it does, but in the cases of other abilities like rad counters, they are too easily interacted with and have too specific a purpose to name them anything else.

Why are there so many lesbians?
>>
>>98708426
To have "so many lesbians" you would need so many women, and this hobby has fewer women than it does trannies.
Unless you mean characters that are lesbians, then I would say because lefties want the gay to be shown and know that women kissing is more palatable to their audience of men than men kissing.

Some truly garbage 3D printed deck boxes anon. They're only like 3 bucks, I doubt you even saved any money
>>

Wasn't ever about saving money, I have lots of money, it was about doing it myself. Starred out with somone elses design, and then eventually made my own, and continually iterrated upon it until I got a design I really like (purple and geen ones in the bottom left corner), and then I paint them myself as I wish. Good fun and makes them all unique.

Good color, decent stats for it's cost, a lot of players play black so very often it can be unblockable (You can play Evil Presence and Cyclopean Tomb and whatever else on top of it), heal is surprisingly potent because again - a lot of people will play black, including you.

It's viable. Very viable.

Not legal in premodern, apparently.

It does not always have evasion, so that's out the window as far as I'm conserned. All it really does then is minimal lifegain. There is much better evasion and much better lifegain.

Pre-Modern is such a trash format because portal is not legal (even though they use modern rules which state portal is a legal set). Also Fallen Empire is not legal as well because this reserve list card scares the whole format.

Here's the list currently. It's quite budget and currently needs some upgrades that are quite low on my list to get around to buying.
If it gets a bad start it's dead in the water, but on a good day I can reliably make 40 mana a turn and cascade into half the deck
>>
>>98703876
>If you play a tame because you like it you're a SHEEP BUG who follows the herd and your instincts like some kind of scuba diving reckless faglord

>>
>>98703876
Listen I also don't like UB but I especially don't like people like you. Why are you turning it into some huge thing that someone buys the stupid cards? Who gives a shit man. Why do you think its reasonable to act like someone is evil and destroying the world because they bought what is essentially a toy? Calm your fagfot ass down
>>
>>98727132
If you are not discerning in how you spend your money or your time, you are subhuman, whether you want to call it insectoid or ovine (that means sheep, lil buddy)
It isn't a controversial statement. The world looks down on addicts and the obese and criminals with poor impulse control.

Again, there are very strong reasons not to buy or play UB. Reasons you had to completely ignore in your reply to make playing/not playing UB seem equivalent.
Well they're not equivalent. The reasons not to play it go to the long term health of the game and the corporate environment that builds around it. The reasons to play it are simply to gratify your urges with disregard to the consequences.
>>
>>98727144
I care about this game and UB represents a threat to the game. I haven't said it's "destroying the world" and exaggerating completely reasonable points to try and make them seems unreasonable doesn't reflect well on you.
>>
>>98727144
Playing a card game is xirs entire identity besides the gay stuff so xhe gets extra butt hurt if you dont let them yuck your yum.

I'm not sure you understand how cascade works, and that's okay

yet another reason why omni doesn't do much here. go ahead and try it but be sure to make up a story how you got the perfect cascade so you could dump your perfect hand on the table with omni
>>
>>98729326
You realize that aside from a couple outliers, the highest mana in the deck is 6? Meaning with omni on board I only need 6 creatures to cast almost the whole deck?

>>
>>98731631
>only 6
not only is that a lot but you'd already be winning in a situation like that. does your pod play 0 removal?
>whole deck
hand. even if you slam some free enchantment creatures right after, the 6 cmc ones are most likely cascading you another couple enchantments that don't win you the game or draw cards so you could keep the loop going
and that's the best case scenario
most likely what is going to happen is either a boardwipe or some removal to ever let a single person have even 5 creatures on the field at a time because you'd just attack them to death already anyway OR one right after you dump your hand because they have no haste
sure, it's a new toy to try out but all I'm saying is that even some of the maybeboard cards might be less dead most of the time since auras only need one creature
>>
>>98733752
>not only is that a lot but you'd already be winning in a situation like that
>6 creatures is a game-winning board state in bracket 2
Give me one reason to even reply to this shit.

>whole deck
>hand.
It's a cascade enchantress deck with cards that say
>whenever an enchantment enters under your control draw a card
>when a creature with power 4+ enters under your control draw a card
>when you cast a spell of mana value 5+ draw a card
>when you cast a creature of power 5+ discover X where X is that creature's power
>when you cast a spell from your hand discover X
>when this creature enters, look at the top 5, put 1 creature or enchantment in your hand
And that's not even mentioning the draw spells themselves

It's fine to not be able to gauge how a person's deck works at a glance, but it's extremely cringe and gay to berate them about how it will function when you haven't even read the cards.

Big turnout for Reality Fracture at my LGS, both nights. People seem to like the set. Played against no nongreen decks all day though, mine was the only one I saw!
>>
>>98741603
Hasbro execs are going to spin it as being UBpiggies staying for more than just 1 set, exactly like they did at the last investors call even though we know it's not true.

At my LGS everyone is dreading Star Trek and saying they're buying in-universe "while [they] can"
>>
>>98741656
Could be, could be. I heard one guy mention he loved TMNT but aside from that I didn't hear any UB talk, it was mostly just discussing the set, what cool pulls people got, trying to work out the lore for why Jace went evil and blew up. Rather refreshing. I don't think I had to hear about any of the (((approved UB))) once.

TMNT is rotting on shelves here. It's almost like it never released. I saw 1 person with a turtles precon one time, and that's it. Never see people playing the set at all

I am back! 2HG went well. Fun as always. Went 1-2, but the lest game was so close. I accidently milled when I shouldn't have and lost one of my bombs I would have drawn. Probabpy would have won with it. Sad, but still lots of fun, and a pretty good turnout for a 2HG night.

Oh, I should add: the deck was originally built with two tinybones and two pack rats, but I took them out after round 1 in favor of fliers. I go to an LGS in a small city and I will say most of them are UB sloppers. Lot of redditors, and the types of people to buy funkopops.
Most games someone plays at least 1 UB card and multiple people have UB commanders.

But even here of all places, with customers like that, there are still Avatar, TMNT, and Marvel product just sitting on the shelf.
They don't even keep Secret Lairs by the cash register. New SLs they keep close because they're small and easy to steal. But the old ones they just put with the rest of the UB stock on a shelf. Was there an Uncharted SL? Or maybe I'm thinking of Tomb Raider, either way it's still on shelves gathering dust.
I wonder how much of a loss they take on this shit. In-universe boosters always sell out in weeks. To the point where I'm not even sure they will have Reality Fracture next week. Completely aside from pre-release I saw about 20 packs of it get cracked, that's almost a whole box, and I'm only counting people I played with
