AD&D2e Dark Sun, and not the revised boxed set.

Its deadly and hard and at the same time your characters can be powerful without sacrificing the deadliness on each breath.

I think Barbarians of Lemuria would unironically a good fit.

If you want a little more crunch, Honor + Intrigue but make Fortune Points a little bit less swashbuckley (like no using them to dodge ranged attacks)

If you are not looking at AD&D 2e i have seen a interesting shadowdark hack and there is a pretty decent 3.5/Pathfinder Hack. 4e Books are kinda interesting but fuck 4e its kinda ass
