Welcome to Open OSR. This thread is for open discussions of OSR, OSR-adjacent and retro games. You can talk about all OSR (TSR era D&D, & retroclones) & OSR-adjacent (Mork Borg, Shadowcity etc) games without distinction here. There is a general for those who want to talk about first decade D&D. If that is your preference, you can find that here >>98683033Previous thread: >>98682314 Thread Question:What's your favorite Oneshot to run? Do you make your own?
>>98713389>TQOne of my favorites is Wyverns Nest, I played this one time and died to some pirates that were just outside the tower's entrance. IDK why but it really stuck with me.
>>98713389>You can talk about all OSR (TSR era D&D, & retroclones)2e is not OSR, Anon.
>>98713405You should argue with Matt Finch about that.
>>98713408Stop deepthroating Finch, fishfag. This is a SFW board.
>>98713408Nobody gives a fuck who that is or what he has to say except for you, you literal raging faggot
>>98713410>>98713422That's nice and all, but no one cares about your argument with Finch, go and discuss the matter with him instead of trying to tell us why you think he made OSRIC iand S&W instead of letting him explain it.
>>98713437>uslollmao, even
>>98713389>TQTOTSK, it's a great teaching module for new players.
>>98713442You do this thing every thread where you try and use the arguments of some random person that has nothing to do with this website, and when we tell you that nobody cares about that person's opinion, you immediately go "Us? Uh, actually there's only one of you and everybody cares deeply about the opinion of this person that I am quoting"I will tell you again: nobody here gives a fuck about that person's opinion, or the opinion of anyone else really. >>98713437>Go take up the argument with Finch! Stop trying to use him as a social shield in order to support your delusions. No one cares who he is or what he has to say except for you.
How much lethality is too much for a dungeon? Is there such a thing as too much or too little?
>>98713471>I will tell you again: nobody here gives a fuck about that person's opinion, or the opinion of anyone else really. If *you* did, *you* wouldn't even be posting here. You wouldn't be>ZAP! Lmao!Posting in /osrg/ either.>>98713397How good is this module? I've heard things about it but not looked into it.
>>98713389>What's your favorite Oneshot to run?For me it's AX1 Sinister Stone of Sakkara
>>98713445Holy shit, right on cue. Why is it that you are so fixated on this absolutely dog shit adventure to the point of inanely posting about it over and over?
>>98713478>SakkaraI like that it splits it's levels up into zones that hold mini factions, but the actual layout inside of them isn't that nice IMO. I'd prefer an almost "micro dungeon/lair" layout for each factions zones.
>>98713476Wtf? Are you a broken chatbot or something? Telling you that your appeal to authority is worthless, isn't the same as you using that appeal to authority as an argument.>You bothered to reply to me? That means you actually really care deeply! You genuinely need mental health treatment. >Zap! lmao! Meds.
>>98713471A lot of people cite his Primer as being important and helping explain what OSR was to everyone. He was also in a pretty uniquely qualified position to explain OSR, because he worked on several of the earliest OSR games, including C&C, co-creating OSRIC, making S&W, and even helping out with Labyrinth Lord. It's hard to find anyone with similar credentials. But, the important thing to understand is that one person can't define what OSR is for everyone. People are allowed to have different ideas about what OSR is and what it means. So, while you might think one way, you should have the maturity to recognize that many people will instead prefer to agree with someone like Matt Finch and the general majority of people who play OSR games. It's probably better to just live and let live and stop being such a stupid faggot and realize that if people are going to listen to anyone, someone like Matt Finch is definitely worth more than a handful of stupid shits banned from every other website and forced to try and recruit people into their dying cult here.
I'd rather play ACKS with a headache than play """2e""" while getting blown. Absolute dog shit game for ESL storyfags>>98713500Eat shit, faggot. If you are so concerned about people who got banned from certain websites, you should just go to those websites to get away from them. But since we are on that topic, I would love to hear about who specifically has been banned from what specific websites, that is a vocal proponent of "2e is not OSR". I'll wait. Unless you were talking about something else completely?
>>98713500A lot of people think McDonald's is good food too, doesn't mean we have to let people who buy it, into the potluck.
>>98713473I don't actually like high lethality that much. If the players play smart, their characters should survive, and not die to some random luck-based death. That's basically the difference between a game having difficulty and artificial difficulty, and it's why I hate certain dungeons. That said, PCs do need to die. Deathless games don't feel right and players act very differently before and after someone actually dies. Finding that perfect sweetspot of what's right for you and your group is pretty hard, but I think the best way to go about it is to play through some pre-made dungeons and not change how lethal they are and then use those to gauge how lethal you'd want your own dungeons to be.
>>98713527> If the players play smart, their characters should survive, and not die to some random luck-based death. What ways are there to mitigate random deaths?Actual lethality in combat is unavoidable and i'm ok with it, i mean more stuff like undetected traps/Random energy drainers/save or die monsters (I usually put those behind telegraphing for players to choose to engage with.)
>>98713476>">ZAP! Lmao!"What the actual fuck? Are you trying to be cool or funny by making some weird reference, or is this a broken AI?
>>98713397>>98713445>>98713473>t. Fishfag desperately trying to simulate discussion. >But the subhuman has a broken theory of mind so he has no idea what conversations between real human beings are actually like.
>>98713478>>98713483Excellent module. Macris is a great module designer. Almost as good as Melan."AD&D" 2e is not OSR btw
>>98713500>mucho textolmao nobody reads your autist rants fishfag
>>98713545Telegraphing is a good chunk of it. Letting players make educated decisions and calculated risks instead of random guesses is something that early D&D actually struggled to provide good guidelines for, but you would frequently stumble upon good examples in various modules. You'd also find plenty of bullshit instant-death in modules too, since the concept of artificial difficulty hadn't been quite as demonized as it is now. The late 70's and early 80's was the Golden Age of the arcade, after all, and cheap and unfair deaths to force kids to keep pumping more quarters into machines was just seen as a natural part of game design.
>>98713389is there a guide for converting any other dnd system to an OSR system?
>>98713576Play BX for at least 6 months to a year of weekly sessions before you even start considering home brewing let alone porting in your dog shit.
>>98713576You could try reversing the official AD&D-to-3.0 guide.https://www.scribd.com/doc/15600502/Conversion-Manual-AD-D-to-D20-3-0Fair warning: it wasn't a particularly good guide.
>>98713576Anon, you seem to be lost. This is a troll nogames thread where fishfag talks to himself and everybody else makes fun of him. Real questions about OSR go here:>>98683033>>98683033>>98683033>>98713577Anon, please don't give advice on fishfag threads.
>>98713582thank you, i will search for any guides and pretty much reverse engineer them
>>98713588>i will search for any guidesSo you didn't bother even looking first?
>>98713586Fuck off back to your containment thread, you retarded baby.
>>98713591Incredible argument. >Containment threadYou mean the thread that the mods told you to fuck off and stop messing with/hijacking?
>>98713588Good luck. I don't think it's going to be very easy, because while the OSR editions are relatively similar (the official OD&D to AD&D conversion book is only four pages long), 3.0 and on are a completely different kettle of fish and even come with fairly different baseline assumptions of how the games work.
>>98713597You really need to stop trying to act like everyone is that one guy who went to the mods and poorly explained the situation. The core of the problem is your little clique is fundamentally retarded and you were the ones who hijacked that thread and changed its OP, driving most people away. Now, fuck off back to that thread. You have your definition and you're free to discuss it all you want there, we'll have our definition here.
>>98713607And you really need to stop pretending like please threads or anything except a pathetic attempt at throwing a tantrum without being caught
>>98713612The only one throwing a tantrum is you.
>>98713613Ah yes, the famous, "you replied therefore you're mad"Your last troll thread was deleted because the OP text was blatant crybaby seething
Wow, he's really just going to keep throwing his tantrum. Shamelessly.
>>98713591>Fuck off back to your containment threadFishfag still hasn't realised that this is the containment thread
>>98713607>everyone
>>98713590>So you didn't bother even looking first?what is better, asking at a thread where people know or just "asking" google? what would be the point of osr threads if this basic thiing was some banned or abominable question?its a message board, message.
Enough talking about Fishfag. Remember to praise Macris in the ACKS thread.
Well, looks like his 3 day ban has ran out. Guess we're back to the usual.
>>98713640Here's a picture of Macris next to Avatar Chud without any further comment.
>>98713645Unfathomably based. Thanks for contributing to the ACKS thread.
>>98713656The shitting on ACKS thread, you mean.Because nothing is funnier than seeing a homosexual like >>98713640 photoshop his head onto Arnold's body so he can jerk himself off to it, other than watching him start crying in frustration when people start posting the objectively terrible AI Slop they had to use instead of art in the books.
>>98713576Honestly you need to remake a lot of stuff from scratch statblock wise, it's easier than just trying to translate numbers. A goblin is a goblin is a goblin. Trap wise it's very easy to just simplify traps or just run them verbatim with just some changed damage to whatever you feel appropriate. Same with rooms/encounters.If i want to run a "modern" game i just use C&C, i use BX for oldschool oneshots/short form campaigns, and BECMI/RC for long term oldschool campaigns.
>>98713630As always, ignore and report.>>98713574I love instant death personally, cheap death as well, provided it is telegraphed/avoidable in some way. Like arcade game "Gotcha!" design works provided everyone is going in with that mindset (see Tomb of Horrors)
>>98713660>Fishfag crying because somebody has mentioned ACKSANOTHER BROSR VICTORY
>>98713671>If i want to run a "modern" game i just use C&CMildly surprised that someone here still plays that. Not a dig at you or the system, just surprise because it popularity largely evaporate two decades ago.
>>98713687>just surprise because it popularity largely evaporate two decades ago.I got put onto it from a youtuber called "We love TTRPGS." And after reading it, i came to the conclusion that it's everything i *wanted* 5.0 to be when i first got that back when i got into the hobby properly in 2015. It's my go-to system if i want to run a more "modern" game for newschool players, rather than trying to chop 5.0 into a crappier, vague imitation of it.
>>98713782I haven't played it in quite a long time. Might have to give it another look.
