Why did a hobby centred around systematic thinking and fantasy fiction get engulfed by improv theatre types?

Who latched on to who first?
>>
It's our fault for not keeping the women and minorities in line.
>>
When people started noticing that the parts you remember more fondly about past game sessions are the ones that make you tell a story, not the +1 you had to hit or the action economy. So, I guess pretty early on.

wrong faggot
>>
theater kids have always been weird insular freaks, seems like a natural audience honestly. my friends and i were stoners who played mtg and dnd but even we thought they were too strange to be around. there were no homosexuals when i was in highschool but i assume thats a requirement now as well which also explains some things about the current ttrpg culture.

It's ok, you're autistic, you're not alone anon.

Because the genre was named for its most noticeable feature, which was improv theatre, rather than for its inspirations in wargaming and fantasy fiction.

It's about time we stopped treating OP as anything more than a persistent trolling cancer on this board.

His whole false dichotomy where the only options are playing like an autistic robot like him or playing freeform follow-the-story is just him being a gigantic faggot.

>>98714412
You know what it stands for, and everyone knows your faggoty disingenuous tactic.

Role Playing GAME, not Poofter Acting Simulator. You play the role in the GAME by making choices based on the character you've constructed and then resolving the consequences of those choices via the GAME mechanics. Not by deciding adventuring is, liek, totes lame and you're gonna, liek, start a fantasy coffee shop & bakery and sit at the table gossiping with each other in funny voices as foreplay before you all go upstairs and rape the host's younger sibling, you faggot fuck.
>>
Chrisl, this guy is literally just going straight for the false dichotomy where the only options are playing like an autistic robot like him or playing freeform follow-the-story, even right after being called out on doing that.

Hey, chucklefuck, it was just a simple way of saying "the thing that attracted the drama club kids was the roleplaying part." It's not deeper than that. Not even validation of them, just an explanation.

You're such a whiny little poser. You don't even play games.
>>
>>98714521
This is oddly specific, did this happen to you?
>>
>>98714291
I don't know what games you play, but in my games, it's almost always equal amounts of both the story and game mechanics. In fact, they're pretty much inseparable. The story can't exist without the game mechanics, and vice versa; they serve to facilitate each other. If someone pulls a game-breaking combo or synergy, gets a lucky roll on a random table, has an extremely situational or costly special ability that everyone forgot until it was important, or otherwise pulls an unexpected victory (or suffers a hilarious blunder) due to a rare or unexpected interaction of game rules, then that makes for a good story, and the game mechanics are inseparable from the story. Even in stories where players are just improvising and the GM has to come up with rulings on the fly, there are still game mechanics involved, and everyone in my groups always remember the rulings when we retell our stories.
>>
>>98714581
The sad thing is that a good number of these fucks totally play normally but want to act as if they just grind dungeons in a silent room where the only sounds are dice rolling and pencils scratching. You confront them when they start ranting and they talk about their games, and guess what? They start info dumping on their setting and story you didn't ask about, and they barely talk about the mechanics.
>>
>>98714644
In case you are not pretending in bad faith, the point is that you remember and retell the story part more than the mechanics that allowed it to happen, not that the story is independent. I never said that.
>>
>>98714646
>grind dungeons in a silent room where the only sounds are dice rolling and pencils scratching
and the mumbling of announcing their actions in shorthand and abbreviations
>>
>>98714010
Fake shit here.
I'm old enough to know that even though all the cartoons showed dnd being played by math geeks with pocket protectors and buck teeth, there was always heavy crossover with theater kids in reality. You either had one of those schools with the weirdly cliquey theater group (maybe because there were too many rich kids), or they were a small enough and super nerdy demographic who hung out with the other subcultures too small to not share a lunch table.
>>
>>98714669
Too much emotion there, you can use cards
>>
>>98714010
It happened the moment Gygax took the bones of a proper strategic wargame and turned them into a "role playing" game.
>>
>>98714702
That's what this is all about! It all makes sense now.
OP is autistic and the noise is overstimulating him.
>>
>>98714646
It's just trolling.
OP is a persistent faggot and a cancer who should never be taken seriously.
>>
>>98714010
Because the main purpose of tabletop gaming is the ROLEplay. At the most bare-bones, a tabletop game is a setting and a set of rules for your and your friends to play pretend without one of you losers going "Actually, I pull out a space laser!" in your medieval D&D setting.

There's far better games to play with if all you want to do is roll dice and keep track of health and damage, all of those warhammer figurines people bitch about the painting of them are a good example. And your eldritch abbomination theatre people don't play that because they have to deal with their cryptonite: people who don't shower and smell of sweat and dried up cum.

>>98714702
the murmur of lingo like little prayers to the dice god is part of the asmr experience to sooth their overstimulated minds

"if al you want to do is roleplay" LOL
>>
If you want mechanics only you can get it from video games. The actual ROLEPLAY/improv and emergent collab part of tabletop is still impossible to recreate for vidya and thus is the most important part of what makes it worthwhile and distinct.
>>
>>98714010
I can't understand how people get baited by this obvious spam.

If you listen to anything about the Blackmoor campaign or how Dave Arneson ran games, you'd understand that's it's baked in to the dna game of the game. It's been there since the beginning, the games that led to those early Blackmoor games were essentially pure improv with a referee.

retard
>>
>>98716007
Not an argument. If not improv/roleplay, then WHAT does ttrpg do that makes it worthwhile? What does it do that you cannot get from any other medium of gaming? You can't and won't answer because you know I am right.
>>
>>98714893
Video games cannot support the detail of combat mechanics required by my autism.
>>
>>98716052
improv isn't roleplay dumb fucking retard
>>
>>98716052
Being able to act beyond the predefined rules. You can do something like use your lantern to ignite a pile of straw despite the unlikeliness of the rules actually covering such a thing. Essentially you assume the fictional world "exists" and the rules approximate it rather than define it. There is some of this in professional wargames, where the point is to learn about war and thus innovation is encouraged. But for leisure games it's pretty much just TTRPGs.
>>
>>98716213
What do you call it when players go off script, or cause the adventure to spin off in an entirely different direction from the plan as the DM changes things based on their choices and actions?
>>
>>98716251
>What do you call it when players go off script

Aaaaah yes, the typical script that every RPG players knows.
>>
>>98716213
Improv is when you are improvising on or going off script or there is no script. When acting.

Role play is when you are playing a role. When acting.

So... special child... when someone is acting out a character for a TTRPG and are naturally not working from a script, what two different things are they doing at once?
>>
>>98716418
That's what he was saying. No shit there's no script. That's what makes it improv.
>>
>>98716429

I did some theater ()well, fucking amateur theater, but still), and I have to say the "improv" analogy is... very, very skewed at best. Especially with general old school rpg.
>>
>>98716441
No idea what analogy you're talking about because even checking the start of that conversation there is no one making one.

That is literally what improv means. It's just short for improvised. People use it in acting, but they use it outside of acting too. It's just slang. Contexts can change what people expect it to mean exactly, but given how it was first used here for "roleplay/improv" in the context of tabletop, then they're clearly talking about the combined improvisational acting done when roleplaying.

Old school RPG players didn't use vocabulary but they did the thing the vocabulary describes. Nothing skewed about it. You seem like you're trying to force a complaint about literally nothing. which I gotta say is a very theater kid kind of drama.
>>
>>98716475

Uh, the OP did. I realize people are saying "theater kids" in not-really-literal sense, it still is a pretty dumb analogy.
>>
this is a thread for people who have never done improv or played an RPG
