Is Warmachine, and by extension America, responsible for the collapse of soulful wargaming?

This is the first game I can think of that marketed itself solely on the competitive scene, and which encouraged skew lists and competitive matches over narrative and thematic armies based on lore and setting detail.

Warmachine was massively popular in the US for a while and remains the only game to threaten GW's market position there. And when GW bounced back they largely copied the competitive aspect of Warmachine. Did Warmachine kill wargaming?

>Warmachine was massively popular in the US for a while and remains the only game to threaten GW's market position there.
Unless you can back this up with some plausible statistic on sales or player count, I call bullshit.

Not OP but warmachine was huge 5-10 years ago. Only other thing that came close was XWing. It's mostly dead now but I remember tons of lgs had dedicated warmachine nights like they did for mtg/ygo. Some places only had warmachine nights for tabletop wargaming it was so popular.

>warmachine was huge 5-10 years ago
the timeline doesn't add up, 3rd edition release 2016 and that was beginning of rapid downfall
>>
>>98726434
Both are dead while 40k reigns supreme.
You need a hobby aspect for tabletop, not just competitive.
>>
>>98726452
GW is strangling their hobby aspect and is only growing more popular.
>>
>>98726459
The hobby aspect is self supporting at this point. It's a difference in European TT miniature culture versus American.

>GW is strangling their hobby aspect
The headliner for their recent reveal show was a new line of paints.
You can criticise GW for a lot of things, but they do try pretty hard to get new fans to pick up a brush and try the hobby. Albeit with their overpriced products.
>>
>>98726492
Yeah, a new line of paints that get around you having to learn to paint lmao
>>
>>98726449
Close enough. I only saw people playing it while I was in university, broke as fuck, and struggling to afford mtg and 40k which was ...hmm...damn.....9 or more years ago....why you gotta do this to me anon?

What are the differences? Good and bad from both sides of the ocean?
>t. a fucking leaf

>alternatives continue to exist
>autists reject them because autists have turbo normie tastes while proclaiming otherwise

The whole "plastic is better than metal " crowd killed everything and yet here I am continuing to buy metal.

Americans play big box 28mm shit in garages or flgses and consider themselves the centre of the known universe and talk about the gaming industry like they are somehow involved eith it as consumers.

Europeans don't wargame due to tarrifs they tell themselves are the fault of Brexit while slapping on more.

England, that green and pleasant land is Wargaming Mecca. People there can self govern their faculties enough to organise clubs and play a variety of games in reserved public spaces. This causes the natural destructiveness of the American to rear its head in a subversive bout of coping and seething.

>England, that green and pleasant land is Wargaming Mecca
What exactly is it that made England just like Wargaming there so much?
I was asking for things like customs, behavior etc.

Well done, sir.

Staying indoors in the only sane choice.

He's just mad the British cottage mini market is dying and being replaced by digital sculptors from outside the UK.

United for not much longer.

being in all the wars, winning all the wars (in the national mindset), traditional and fairly bellicose culture creates broad appeal along with the general bookishness of the middle class
>>
>>98733960
Even if that were the case and not just an israeli chimp out / nothing ever happens episode, we'd still be united. You see, the English are superior and you owe everything to us, and so the cultural, anthropological and economic impact of that would outweigh whatever merely political power you gain from "independence" you fucking spudnigger, you won't do shit.
>but muh IRA
one bottle gets thrown at a cop and we're sending you back to the stoneage

That was the weirdest thing about Warmachine to me. It was supposed to be a Steampunk WWI type game. The Cygnar infantry were even called Trenchers. But it was just played on an empty open field, maybe a couple times or stands of trees in a corner.

Taking swipes at plastic minis in the early/mid 00's was pretty gutsy too. Most gamers were pretty excited about stuff like the plastic boxnaut.
>>
>>98744534
It's a pretty insane game when I've seen it played competitively. Like I don't think the theme comes across at all, it's all weird spell and movement stacking and then 'now my gigadeath murderkiller is maxxed and instantly destroys your hero, winning me the game, too bad about that 0.5" gap you left bro".

It for sure has all this lore, but I think it matters on the table even less than Warhammer. And fuck the dragon faction is incredibly ugly.
>>
>>98744534
I think an infantry centered game would be great based on Trenchers

I think Warmachine moving to all digital cards killed the game
>>
>>98726415
Warmachine did show up in ICV2 sales rankings and even beat out WFB for a while. But that was over 10 years ago.
>>
honestly im not sure what killed it aside from bad marketing and trying to push tournament format.

I remember when it put out an RPG that looked interesting, yet i never got a group to try.
>>
>>98746248
Going all in on comp, admitting on record they “balanced” the game to drive sales, and axing their Press Gangers as basically back to back events.
>>
>>98740348
What was possibly the world's first published rulebook for accessible, purely recreational miniature wargaming was created in the UK as well, I guess there's just something in the water.
>>
>>98746235
It actually showed up there after the reboot earlier this year, its never reaching same heights again, but it seems to have managed to restart its pulse if nothing else
>>
They catered to the loud minority of comp players. Turns out most players do not care.
