Welcome to Open OSR. This is a seperate thread is for open discussions of OSR, OSR-adjacent and retro games. You can talk about all OSR (TSR era D&D, & retroclones) & OSR-adjacent (Mork Borg, Shadowcity etc) games without distinction here.

There is a general for those who only want to talk about first decade D&D. If that is your preference, you can find that here >>98683033
As always, report and ignore any trolling

Previous thread: >>98713960

Thread Question:
What's your favorite retroclone? (BFRPG, FG&G, OSRIC S&W etc)
>>

I started with BFRPG, but moved to regular B/X & BECMI after a while. it holds a special place in my heart.

Continuing from last thread
>The way Gygax described "proper" old school gaming? Also valid, and actually pretty different from what you claim is "Gygaxian" by selectively misinterpreting his AD&D writings.
LMAO that's bullshit and even you know it
>>
>>98728086
>Why are you even like this? I'm not telling you the right way to play OSR games, because there isn't one that's universal. What I'm telling you is you need to stop being such a retard and trying to push your gay and retarded shit and acting like you know what's best when all of your ideas are about as close to objectively stupid as ideas about RPGs can get.
Those are just insults, not an argument. I accept your concession on behalf of the Anon you were replying to.

My favorite retroclone is ACKS II. Best RPG since 1981 by far.

>open osr

More like dead games lol

Osr is tranny shit
>>
Started a solo ACKS game recently, it's great fun. My character and his companions looted a dungeon of its brasswork for extra loot and xp, but we lucked out whilst hunting Goblin raiders and found a lake teeming with good quality fish, so we put the money from that brasswork to good use and started a fishing industry that's making us rich.
>>
>>98729645
Great session report. You should try smoking the fish to improve your earnings.
>>
I'm planning on running my classless & level-less OSR style dungeon crawler game. Based on OSR D&D basic rules but with a bunch of gay furry races where you need money to advance your character. I am hesitant to shill it here since I feel people may not care for it since it's not very traditional OSR, but if interested let me know and I'll make an effort to shill it here.

Like... gay furry races, or gay furry races?

Ah, like "The OSR Catgirl: Nine Lives of Adventure by Contentronix!" It's an OSR supplement dedicated entirely to catgirls. A bunch of custom races and classes built using the ACKS rules for custom classes and races, so it's guaranteed to be well-balanced, since Alexander Macris is a genius.

It's still more OSR than "AD&D" 2e.

I actually meant these cute bnuuies stolen from another thread on here about rolling for stats (which we will certainly be doing)
Don't worry I wasn't planning on doing an ERP OSR thing or anything like that, that's a little too cringe for me. But glad to see how much interest there is!
>>
>>98729558
Unironically, I've been thinking a lot about the OSR dying.

It started with the essay "The OSR should die", about how the OSR had long since outlived its original purpose and even then went through another period of rise and fall with a completely different purpose, and the more I think of all the baggage that comes with it, the more I think that the OSR creators who are deliberately distancing themselves from even calling themselves OSR have their reasons. The OSR becoming some sort of marketing term also has injected it with all sorts of stuff that has largely been for the worst, and that's something I think most people can agree on.

Old games will outlive the OSR. People won't stop playing older editions just because those letters stop being used, and I think that people will always keep tomb raiding the old books for ideas even for non-OSR games. If the OSR died, in whatever way that means, I'm not entirely sure it would be a bad thing, because Old School gaming is pretty much immortal while the revolutional/revival/renaissance/etc. sometimes looks like it's in a real zombified state.

Actually while I'm on the subject...

Anyone have any good methods or procedures for doing things like shops and downtime spending? What I mean is, I want a way for players to be able to spend and use up their money in useful ways, both on equipment and other services, but writing out shop lists is very tedious and I'm not sure just stealing one will work if I don't have the exact right math formulas or if I want to add something to it and so on. Is there a slightly easier way to do shopping and prices or is your only real option writing a massive shopping list?
>>
>>98730154
ACKS II has a bunch of great procedures for cost of living, wages, running shops and economic activities, and it has a shitload of formulas to determine what is or isn't available at each given location based on market size and local economy.
>>
>>98730163
Is it setting agnostic though? And does it consider things like how much money you need to stock dungeons with to make it economic or whatever?

Personally I don't want to give players a way to "invest" their money so they're constantly pushed to adventure to more and more dangerous locations, but I understand as part of the simulation it may be a useful procedure.
>>
>>98730163
I looked at ACKS II, and I really don't like it. Sure, there's tons of charts and procedures for doing things, but they always make things much more complicated than they need to be and the results are always a let down.

I just wanted to do a little economy stuff, and before you can do anything it keeps telling you that you need to jump around to different tables and make charts and it's a mess. And when I plugged in everything, I just got these really generic results that made me feel like I had just wasted my time.
>>
>>98730169
>Is it setting agnostic though?
It's as setting agnostic as anything like that can be. Prices and item availability are necessarily going to depend on the setting, but what's given in ACKS II is meant for generic vanilla OSR settings. If your setting departs from that, naturally you'll have to make a few changes here and there.

>does it consider things like how much money you need to stock dungeons with to make it economic or whatever?
It absolutely does! It has rules for Arcane casters to build and run dungeons.
>>
>>98730176
That's okay Anon. ACKS II is the best RPG published since 1981, but that still doesn't mean it's for everyone.
>>
>>98730176
ACKS is complete trash and a scam pushed by troll shills. Only reason anyone brings it up is because they've been banned from advertising it everywhere else so we're stuck with the shills here.

Always just ignore the ACKS shills and don't give them any attention. They're just perpetually upset that they've never managed to get more than 2k backers on any of their kickstarters, and keep in mind that's with them having aggressively shilled so much that they got themselves banned from several websites for doing so.
>>

I wanted to give the game a fair look anyway. Honestly, I feel bad for the designer guy, because he definitely put a lot of work in the game but he's just not very smart and doesn't really understand how to design games. And, he's apparently been doing it for over a decade, so there really doesn't seem like there's any hope that he'll get any better at it.
It reminds me of late BECMI stuff where rules just kept being added because someone would have an idea for a rule, but they weren't any that good and no one ever actually used them.
I think Mentzer was an okay designer, but even some of the stuff in the Companions books felt like he was starting to grasp at straws to add content and it was a steady downhill slope from there.
>>
>>98730233
You can safely ignore our local resident troll. He's been on a jihad against ACKS for years purely for political reasons.

You can always just categorize goods and apply broad modifiers. Any mechanic only ever has to be as complex as you want it to be.
World Without Number comes with a lot of data and procedures for shopping and downtime, but that's probably more complex than what you actually need.

It's actually pretty funny that they think that this board can forget all the shilling they've tried to do in the past or that the whole story of how they hijacked the /osrg/ can just be forgotten.

It's 4chan. The whole thing is anonymous never forgets. We've even got the archive with dates showing all the shit they've done, and even are doing now. . My favorite example of this is still when during the last ACKS kickstarter, a shill kept popping up in unrelated threads around the board.
First he appeared in the /5eg/ and started samefagging to himself, and was immediately told to fuck off and had all his posts deleted. Seems like any place where there's enough people, these kind of faggot shills get bodied immediately.
So instead of giving up, the little shit decided to try in a less populated thread, the /3eg/. Same shit, same samefagging, but instead of his posts getting deleted, he instead got bullied by the people in the /3eg/. Just mercilessly mocked, because he kept trying to tell people about his fishfag and his fish story and how there was only one person who would think it was boring.

He got so fucking pissed, that he started making huge fat posts of how mad he was, including this crown jewel of a post. It's the maddest probably anyone's ever been on this board.

We need to figure out how to keep the ACKS shill trolls to actually stay in their containment thread. The problem is, as soon as someone makes a new OSR thread, the shills see it as a threat and do their best to ruin it, largely just by being there and being themselves.

Agree, let's go back on topic. What's your favourite ACKS monster? Mine is the Death Charger. It's an undead construct created by stitching an undead rider to an undead horse. ACKS has rules for creating undead, constructs, and undead constructs, and they're really cool and well made.

I think I prefer the originals with some houserules, but I like what OSE does. It's very faithful and the designer has made a lot of posts explaining any changes he made and they're all very reasonable.

BECMI is like a slimmed down version of ACKS, which is good.
>>
>>98730422
It's basically B/X plus, and how good the "plus" is really varies.

There's some decent rules they added, mostly because a lot of the rules are just things that people had been asking to have official rules for for years and were really no-brainers. The problem is that the more stuff they added, the quality and usefulness diminished, and a big complaint about BECMI is that as the publishing went on it started to show signs of becoming a sorta proto-3e.
>>
>>98730349
This has already paid for itself and it's only been one thread.
>>
>>98730422
Mentzer didn't really make many changes to the BE rules. I can't even think of any off the top of my head.
The CMI though added a lot, and you gotta be a bit careful with what and how you add different material. One big thing that was added later was non-combat skills, and that can have a big impact on how the game runs and feels, though I'm not 100% certain those were Mentzer.

Where's the lie. He's basically reposting "I irritated this person until they told me what everyone thinks of me, that makes me the winner."

I wish I knew the full context, but the gist is that Mentzer had been arguing with someone on Dragonsfoot, and became so frustrated that he sent them a DM threatening that unless they stopped posting, he would use all of his powers to ruin that person's life as best he could.

...Which amounted to threatening to make fun of him in a game. A game that I don't think ever got made. And the guy shared the DM because I don't think Mentzer understood that threatening you're going to throw a lawyer at someone doesn't actually make a DM private.

I just looked into it, and the full story is pretty insane.
https://knights-n-knaves.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?t=14851
In 2017, Frank was launching a new project called Empyrea, and was on Dragonsfoot doing some precursor promotion. A guy name EOTB was being critical of the project, mostly about how much money the kickstarter was asking for ($250K), and Frank sent him that PM. EOTB showed it to a DF mod, Frank got banned from the forum, the PM got shared, tanking Frank's PR pretty heavily on DF and other OSR websites.
A month later, the Empyrea kickstarer launched, and it ended up being canceled.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/extsr/frank-mentzers-empyrea-fantasy-setting-for-10-rpg
I don't know if it would have failed without that PM being leaked, but it's crazy to think one meltdown might have actually been responsible for Mentzer's design career effectively ending.
>>
>>98730928
That's a sad story.
>>
>>98731010
It is until you read the meltdown again.
Even people in that knight-n-knaves thread were speculating whether Mentzer getting banned from DF was fair up until they saw exactly what he wrote. The threats aren't exactly that bad or even that credible, but he had way too much ego and way too much rage to be able to handle being on a forum.
>>
>>98731010

right, found it in the usual place. after a quick read:
>it takes every single pulp setting and trope ever and sticks it on the same three islands. there's robots, mutants, cyborgs, aliens, zombie pteranodons, cults worshiping offbrand cthulhu, sorcerers, apemen, snakemen, barbarians etc
>no standard coin, a few different standards going on but the most common way to buy/sell is using magic items, favors, secrets or women
>on that note, slave girls and damsels in distress out the wazoo, at least two that are about to get straight up raped by monsters (picrel is surprisingly not related to any specific encounter but just tacked near the end of the book), and at one point there's just a hooker teleported from 1970s earth in the middle of the islands
>extremely lethal, the random encounters and hex encounters are very threatening in general and there's many ways to accidentally (or intentionally) destroy the islands or even the world
>lots of magic items, tons of magic sentient swords. players can potentially scavenge several functional scifi vehicles and even spaceships
>the few dungeons are not well detailed, there's a map but no key at all so that'd be on the gm
yeah uhhh, that's a tough one. there's a lot of work to do for the gm, and it's gonna take a specific mindset to enjoy. also, it'd help to start the characters at higher levels otherwise they're just gonna die

In my last game, my DM actually had us in a dude in distress plot, rescuing a blacksmith from some dragon. He's a bit woke.

We had zero real motivation to actually save the smith. We we're actually joking about it during the game, with everyone making it clear we were just following the plot because we didn't want to be evil and it was the first hook presented to us. It was actually refreshing, being railroaded but everyone acknowledging the railroad and just going along with it anyway instead of fighting it tooth and nail. It being out in the open and a joke was way better than stewing angrily because we had been robbed of player agency to take on a quest to save some guy no one really gave a fuck about.

It's because OSR is full of people who didn't like how someone else did things and insisted on playing the game their way for 30ish years and who now have access to publishing tools so they can share their perfect vision with the world. The ability to keep to your perfect vision of a game for 30ish years takes a certain admirable stubbornness, it also takes a hell of a lot of ego.

Unfortunately their perfect vision and some other dude's perfect vision of the game are slightly different - in the good old days before the ubiquitous internet, neither of these people would ever interact - aside from maybe over a BBS or IRC with six other people in it. Now with mass internet when the two start shit flinging and their egos get too much the entire internet can watch (which even in a niche hobby is maybe tens of thousands of people rather than the few hundred of the old irc/text forum days.)

Now there are two people with a hell of a lot of stubbornness and ego now disagreeing on something so drama ensues.

It also doesn't help that many of the people who enjoy OSR and actually create and play it rather than discuss it on a mongolian basket weaving forum are on the older side. This means that they'll often say or do something that will get the 'modern audience' crowd upset (something that was liberal twenty years ago is now a sign of being pro-hitler, that sort of issue).
>>
>>98732754
This. You start in Mystara and once the players know how to play you take them to that island with the portal that leads to Greyhawk. Now that would be epic.
>>
>>98732866
>The ability to keep to your perfect vision of a game for 30ish years takes a certain admirable stubbornness, it also takes a hell of a lot of ego.

I don't really think there's anything admirable there.

I can't think of anything good about a guy who rejects growth.
>>
For those that do play 2e, do you stick to the multiple forms of XP (Individual, Class based, Race based) or do you just go back to Gold for XP?
>>
>>98732968
Nobody plays 2e lmao
Fishfag literally proved half a dozen times that he doesn't even know anything about it
>>
>>98732968
I use most of them, but I don't do flat gold for xp, but rather xp for gold spent so they are encouraged to do something with it. I've been running a 2e campaign for the last nine months and the party is comfortably around 3rd-4th level. Monster XP alone is slow as fuck. Individual class rewards are tedious to track but actually help a lot.
>>
>>98732968
I never liked Class XP. It felt forced and I hate giving out XP for every little thing.

I always give XP to the whole party. Even if one player defeated an enemy all by himself the whole group would still get the same XP. So, if a player did something that would warrant "individual" XP, the whole party would share that XP. I don't give out this kind of "bonus" XP that often though.

>or do you just go back to Gold for XP?
Sometimes. Usually though it would be more "You found and brought the treasure hoard back to town, that's worth X XP" than strict 1:1.

One DM I play with does strict Gold for XP. He makes it work but I do feel limited by it.
>>
>>98733031
Yeah, Individual class rewards are fairly tedious to track, I am thankful my current game (and first time running 2e) is only with two players so it's not too bad. I am considering xp for gold spent since there is a pretty big imbalance between the two PC's (A Thief and a Psionicists) but that could be fixed with me being way more mindful of what I prepare of course.

>>98733048
That's fair, I am not entirely sold on Class XP for the reason above, the Thief can level up way faster than the Psionicist if I am not careful about preparing future sessions. That is interesting to note what you do for Gold for XP though. Thankfully the players have been very focused on building connections to the villages and city-states they have visited so far.
>>
>>98732968
I ran 2e for a while before covid. I messed up and gave the rogue way too much experience for traps and gold but it didn't matter.
>>
>>98732968
Sorry, 2e is off topic for this thread, as it's not an OSR game! Start a 2e general if you want to discuss it.
>>
>>98733139
Yeah I have a single triple classed grey elf in mine who levels like a snail, and the single classed clerics are ahead of everyone because of individual class xp. I am fine with this, the gap isn't all that big and it lets them enjoy cooler shit earlier and keep the other multiclassers alive. Though I do have three clerics in a party of five.
>>
>>98733031
>Monster XP alone is slow as fuck.
You can always just double it.
I think it's more fun to reward other stuff more though, but if any XP seems slow you can always just increase its value.
>>
>>98733189
I've had really lopsided parties before, level-wise. Never had a problem with them, (usually because they'd be lopsided because of deaths and it felt earned, and no one ever felt useless) especially compared to how bad balance could be in 3e where it felt like you couldn't do anything if your character was bad.
>>
>>98733197
This is actually recommended in the DMG, I think, or in FG&G. That other rewards should tend to be about equal to double monster xp.
>>
>>98733243
Yeah that has been my main worry so far. Thankfully my two players have been very clever and careful at this point. Not sure that will be said with another group who has some interest in Dark Sun but eh, gotta learn some how.
>>
>>98732947
Conversely if you're too openminded your brain will fall out.

Growth/progress for growth/progress' sake is genuinely worse than conservatism for conservatism's sake.

Without getting into /pol/ territory we can see this with DnD - 5e is genuinely less fun and less creative than ADnD and B/X - hence the OSR in the first place. The same can be seen with GeeDubs and the whole Age of Shitmar thing.

>Growth/progress for growth/progress' sake is genuinely worse than conservatism for conservatism's sake.

I refuse to accept that.

If it comes down to a question of the absolute two extremes of change and consistency, destructive progress or eternal stagnation, it's growth that must and will win out.

Luckily, we don't have to battle it out throwing galaxies at each other, and can just agree that there can be a happy middle ground between the two extremes, and that doing either just for their own sake is dumb compared to having an actual meaningful goal.

I play 5e and B/X (and other games besides), and I wouldn't say either is more fun/creative than the other. It's like saying whether the NES is more fun/creative than the Switch, they're different machines and both can deliver great games.

No, my homebrew isn't really trve osr so that doesn't work, hence why I went to the open OSR thread.

Well since I'm autistically hyperfixating on it right now; gonna share my notes.
>Game is OSR dungeon crawler/action adventure game with no classes or levels
>Instead character progression is gated behind gold (no xp, just spending gold to advance/upgrade your character and their equipment)
>Players pick a race then roll stats (each race is rolled differently to give different stat spreads and maximum/minimums)
>Game rules focus on fast and interactive "rulings over rules" mentality, so combat maneuvers and the like are referee'd on the fly
>Because no direct character skill ranks or class features, everything is either gamified as taking time or being gated by items (lockpicking)
>Because no healing spells instead healing is done as a downtime action that can be done in the dungeon (using bandages or first aid) but triggers wandering monster rolls (time spent in the dungeon increases danger)
>No player facing magic yet, but was a planned feature. Because no player MU class was probably going to relegate it to magic wands and/or scrolls and the like

Thus far the game was very popular and successful with my first trial group, who thought I ran it well. I asked for vigorous feedback and the main point of complaint I had from one player (who has a more 5e background I believe) didn't like how similar all the characters were and the lack of mechanical differentiation. I agreed with this a little bit but I'm trying to figure out a good way to explain that its mess mechanically differentiated moreso fiction or player-skill oriented since he might be more used to mechanically focused games, but I still think it was overall a success. I'd like to try again with perhaps a larger playgroup that doesn't fall apart in three sessions (maybe the game was bad enough that's why it didn't last?)

>the main point of complaint I had from one player (who has a more 5e background I believe) didn't like how similar all the characters were and the lack of mechanical differentiation.
That was a common complaint with the original 5e playtest when it came to using ability scores rather than skills, largely because differences between even a -1 and a +4 can practically evaporate on a d20. White Box FMAG

clean, sleek, sold right at the cost of print, handles 10+ levels of play, optional AAC, single or detailed saving throw matrices, preserves the original magic caster spell list without adding new, game loop breaking spells. no skill or attribute checks is the best part, the main chassis (x-in-6) feels more revolutionary and modern today than almost any contemporary mechanic i know

the only other manuals (aside from modules) that bring anything else to the table (in my opinion) are the AD&D 1e DMG for advice on how to run the thing, and the D&D Cyclopedia if you want "the Bible", but having such a small, self contained beaut like FMAG just beats everything else hands down - honestly enamored with it, and wont pretend otherwise.
