What everyone misses with why tieflings are actually popular is that there's a desire out there, especially among women playing DnD, for races where they're way more different than just pointy ears, but they're not furry. Where they have animal and monster features but still human faces. So basically tieflings fill the niche that every anime and JRPG "monster" races has. Which is just a human with a tail and horns and different ears. Being more colorful is also appealing.

If you're playing a tiefling with my group, you'll roll on the deformity table. Twice. Tieflings are not humans, but with horns. They are monsters.

Being a tiefling wizard and 3.5 for the mechanical benefits (like being able to Alter Self to become an outsider with flight) was acceptable.4e onward is became a snowflake class. I've only ever had 1 girl in one of my campaigns as she of course played one.

They were always outsiders even if their non-tiefling family accepted them. Modern tieflings are just cursed humans descended from a cursed empire who always breed true. They have tiefling parents and live in an area where tieflings make up a large demographic, if not the majority.
