So far the basic characters I have invested thought into are mainly just the big boys, like the chapter master, lead knight, palatine, etc. I like the idea of the imperium as an opportunity to explore morality, because while they obviously have a very different moral compass than we do now the majority of at least high-performing imperials are doing their best from their own perspective. He ends up attached to this chapter of space marines as a pilot for some of the smaller voidships since he still wants to fight for the imperium. During the course of their campaigns they actually find some of his house's knights, corrupted by chaos, and after winning the battle this information comes out. The chapter master, acting mainly in the spirit of trying to follow the example of Dante and Guilliman in building up a stronger imperium rather than just trying to kill as many heretics as possible, gives his house the knights back, helps them purge them of chaos taint, and gives his house rulership of one of the reconquered planets, in exchange for a promise of eternal military alliance between the two, and the promise of supplying the chapter with high quality recruits from the world's population. As you can tell I am quite a big fan of actual medieval knight stories.

I haven't really developed my thoughts on that plotline as much but I kind of came up with it as an excuse for any civil wars they might get into. My chapter is very psychically talented and believe in the potential of psyker powers to be useful so there's a potential heresy angle to that if taken to far, or if it's perceived as being taken too far. If I ever do end up getting guardsmen I can also pretty easily add them in by saying the knight made an offer to a group of cadian refugees to live on his planet after the fall of cadia because he wanted to have strong soldiers for his citizenry or something. That works out because cadians are my favorite tabletop guard regiment anyways.

No thinning required, good flow from the brush and high opacity. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they slowly squat a lot of their paint range in favor of these.
