Why did people stop caring about FATE?
>>98742491Powered by the Apocalypse.
No one actually cared about FATE
Fate doesn't give a whole lot to hold onto. It's good for short adventures but its novelties wear off pretty quickly.
>>98742580It's good for One Shots when somebody flakes or has to bail or the ForeverGM has a nervous breakdown.
>>98742580Based cat
>>98742509>>98742516Combine these two into one, and its the correct answer.
>>98742491Maybe people had a situation like I did once?>Had some buddies that were really into tabletop gaming and trying out new RPG systems all the time>One friend brings up FATE a bunch>"Sounds cool, bro. We should try it some time.">He still just keeps talking about it every time we meet>"Okay... Well, are you gonna run it for us, since you've looked so much into it?">He agrees to run the game>Day comes where he's running his session>Game starts, but he spends more time explaining how the game works than actually playing>Just keeps talking about hypothetical stuff you could be doing in the game>WOW FATE IS JUST SO COOL>We lose interest and go back to trying some other random system we found online (I think it was the old Street Fighter RPG?)From what I read, FATE is a pretty cool system. It just seems like everyone who is familiar with it is more interested in talking about the hypothetical stuff you could do with it rather than actually running the game. (I think GURPS oftentimes shares a similar issue.)
How is the progression system in FATE? Like, how do characters grow, at what rate, and what are the heights of their power? Also, are equipment and character abilities separate things, mechanically? (One of the things I hate about the "Multi-genre RPG system" that I use is that equipment and items are considered part of your characters kit. So loot doesn't really matter and if you do manage to pick up something cool, that eats up some of your character growth.)
>>98742616>(I think GURPS oftentimes shares a similar issue.)Every genre-free generic is like that.
>>98742491>>98742516>>98742616>>98742635Fate is actually not all-caps'd like GURPS or F.U.D.G.E.
>>98742491>people cared about FATE to begin withIn my time in this hobby FATE has always been "that game everyone has a book for but no one ever got around to actually using. Most didn't even buy the book, they were given it by someone else, who never got around to playing it." Fuck I've had my book 10 years now and haven't found someone to throw it at who doesn't already have one.
>>98742596At a friend's birthday party someone randomly suggested playing an RPG and in less than an hour everyone knew the rules, had made characters, and were playing. It's good to have at least one game in your back pocket capable of that.
>>98742659:0 He's right!...
I remember back in 2014 I applied to work at a local game store, and they asked me what games I liked. I said I was into pretty much everything /tg/, I liked Magic, D&D, and loads of board games. To impress them, I said I knew tons of other RPGs, from Toon to FATE. They asked me how I would "sell" FATE to a prospective customer (they did have the core rulebook for sale). I said it was probably the most versatile system I knew of, because it made things abstract enough that you could run pretty much any type of story in it without much issue. You could have a game like The Matrix without having to learn a bunch of cyberpunk and gun rules, or some really bizarre setting. I said the downside was that the mechanics were pretty disconnected from anything literal in the story, and you weren't gonna find in-depth combat rules, for example. They ended up not hiring me. I realized years later that when they said "we need some help on Wednesday nights" that that was the only shift they were going to hire me for. i was gonna be making like $45 a week there. 2014 economy fucking sucked. That game store went out of business a couple years later due to sexual harassment allegations and lawsuits. I did get some cool minis from them at least.
>>98742659Can I type BORG in call caps? Just for fun. Not the Mork part, or the pirate or cyberpunk parts either, just the BORG part.
>>98742491It probably doesn't help that Fred Hicks is a peice of shit who underpays people, and the last new edition came out over 10 years ago. It's also just not a very good system. I tried to run a couple of things in it, and it just ended up being clunky.
>>98742491when was the last time fate made anything?
>>98743423I think that shitty "we wanted to do a terminator game but terminator wouldn't let us, so we made it lovecraft instead because we are hacks" thing.
>>98742491Did anyone here actually play a proper Fate campaign? Because PBTA definitely didn't kill Fate, as PBTA just brought in new people who want to consoom their IP more than play 5e conversions. Or at least that's my takeaway. >>98742869Anon here basically summarized Fate, if you don't need super specific rules, you can have a good time but all Fate stuff will feel like Fate, instead of the thing you are trying to do(Can be a good or a bad thing). Personally having played Fate in 2 campaigns, I hate Fate but I don't know if i'd like to play PBTA more? Biggest issues in Fate imo are fudge dice, and the Fate point economy. I always dreaded throwing dice in Fate, because it felt like I would always turn a successful attempt into a failure. Fate points also get used a lot, and if your character doesn't have good stats/aspects, your going to not have Fate points to use later on, unless your GM is very good at managing those. This is also a problem in Savage worlds, and Wrath & Glory successfully fixes this by tying Glory to dice rolls.
>>98742659It was before Ryan tried to make that the rallying cry for his "purge the old crowd" initiative.
>>98742491The game is great but the "community" is a bunch of cunts led by a company that's seemingly embarrassed by the one good they wrote for it.That said, getting Fate: Condensed and actually following the book while flagrantly ignoring the developers trying to revise it to what they *meant* to write results in a remarkably good Storygame.
>>98742509/thread
>>98742960Clunky how?
>>98743580PBTAs are hardly a good place to search for "the game of the IP" tough.
>>98747258Thinking in terms of aspects and compels and invoked just didn't come naturally to my group, and, while at one point the idea that these kinds of games end up driving a certain kind of experience, I've found that more trad games drive the kind of experience that works for my table just fine. I get that there are some tables where sharing the authorial voice is important, and the GMs I run with in the games I run, we just kind of do that automatically. Have mechanical carrots and sticks that require you to step out of character mode and into author mode just don't feel great to me.
>>98743507cthulhutech? didn't they make a new book for that one?
>>98742635There is no progression (or equipment management), because Fate isn't a TTRPG, it's barely even a board game, as it's a glorified "ruleset" for improv theater. It has literally no mechanics other than denying the GM or swinging the story in your favor by spending limited points which you get back for "making interesting storytelling decisions" (usually by heavily stacking the deck against yourself). At best it could possibly serve as a tool for some TV show's screenwriter's rooms (ala Buffy or Angel, etc., which I'm almost 100% sure was the actual reason someone came up with Fate in the first place) but not as a legitimate mainstay TTRPG for anyone.
>>98748850Kekkt
>>98743507having looked at it myself, the last thing evil hat themslves released for fate was this year, some techfantasy adventure thing called umdaar
>>98742491Fate core was hilariously bad at accomplishing at what it set out to do. Accelerated actually accomplished what they wanted but fuck all for supplementary stuff was built around accelerated.
>>98749140Yeah, this was a worlds of adventure thing from awhile ago, i ran the intro adventure at one point. Interesting setting, but fate honestly seems like a dogwater system for it. Takes all kinds, though, I guess.
>>98748850No, that's "we wanted to make a Kaiju/Guyver game, but we couldn't get the rights, and it's the 2000s, so Lovecraft is really popular" the game.
