TITANICUS HAS BEEN PLAYED
2.5k+warmaster for Mortis and ordo sinsister for me (henceforth the titans name shall be the PSI-dkick). Holy shit this was so cool. 4 turn game, overall tied thanks to secondary objectives
I don't feel like stacking the images so this is gonna eat in the image cap but I make all the threads anyway so Fuck you!

The game was 3 warlords and a warbringer in an Extermigus maniple plus 2 reavers and the Psidkick, vs 1 reaver and 2 hounds in a ferrox, 1 warlord, 1 warbringer, 1 reaver, and 1 warhound in a preceptor plus 1 dire wolf and 1 warmaster.

Xestobiax quickly shoots itself in the foot stacking too many titans on top of each other while Mortis spreads out, however the Iron Vigil had to avoid the Ordo Sinister's proximity lest it have to start rolling 3+ on its command rolls like some kind of fucking PLEB.
I'm gonna stack images anyway or else this is gonna take thirty minutes and holy shit I am hungry.

I want a dramatic rescue/relief mission. Just spit balling but say you take 500 points of allies which are all you deploy up to half the table and have a penalty to shot first turn due to smoke/fog of war. The you have 1750 of your main force that comes in. The idea is allies take casualties before you can really rescue them, hence being over limit slightly. Then yo score points if they retreat off your board or survive the battle.

I really like asymmetrical missions.

Turn 1 the Psi-dkick makes an impression by GUTTING the Harvester of Sorrow with a single shot from the Sinsligma Temgmeon, giving it a reactor leak that would eventually kill it.
The Psi-dkick would, thanks to the building it was hiding behind, absorb and inordinate amount of firepower. I'd judged its value as to that of the Warmaster and I think it's a pretty decent comparison. I'd actually call it better.

Turn 2 was some happensauce. Stipes gets an ENGINE KILL only to be killed by the warmaster. Bossman bodyblocked Lazerbeak falsely thinking it would be targetted. The Psi-dkick would lose its shields that it would never reignite, but it would also hobble two opposing titans with its bullshit tempest attack.

Turn 3 would be defined by EVERY Xestobiax titan firing on the warmaster, while the Psi-dkick dealt with its opposition as best it could. The reaver from before died to a reactor overload. It would overextend itself in and finally be felled, acting as bait to force Legio Mortis units into unflattering positions which was totally intentional shut up

Turn 4 was set by the OP pic with Bossman scoring the kill (finally holy SHIT it was down to the wire) on the warmaster. The Pale King redeemed its failures by killing a warhound in a single salvo, and nobody else died. It could have gone onto a very interesting turn 5 but it was a bit late and I was tired so we called it. An even score thanks to Mortis's good placement and superior numbers. What an awesome fucking match. What fun.
Play Titanicus.

It's just fun to imagine, so here it goes:
Ultramarines are often "thought of" (flanderised as) being centered around a core of strict tennets that eventually got formalized as the codex astartes. But remember unlike other legions, most UM Chapters aren't from Macragge; they recruit from all of Ultramar. And Ultramar borders Nuceria.
Reminder Guilliman surprised the Osirean xenos (and later killed Alpharius allegedly) by with a full force frontal assault. Like the Nemesis Destroyer Chapter, there can very well be a chapter specialized for direct assaults.
To a hammer, the entire galaxy is made of nails. It's not so much about being mindless, but about hammering regardless. That's what the Warborn are all about.

RETVRN to tradition yovng man The. Epic 40,000 Battle Book specifically

The main difference is to have the lone formation occupying a stout redoubt of favourable terrain. I love hidden deployment tokens they are beloved but I don't think they would work well in this scenario.
>>
>>98763797
Hence the penalty to hit first turn. Maybe only on 6s, blasts always scatter. I see it as fog or smoke and the attackers are just saturating the allied position with fire. Also the opponent would be at 2k is what I meant. So 2k vs 500 that can't be hit well first turn then 1750 of main force trying to show up.

I don't think it can be perfect but that's not the point.

I usually don't like this kind of thing. Modernising old epic Daemon engines because so many are too cartoonish for that too work. The original Cannon of Khorne looks like it was made by the chaos lord Mehmet Angronoğlu to break down the walls of Constantinople Hive (and I love it)

How many TEQ is too many TEQ? I've been considering a list with 27 models in Terminator or Artificer armour (plus 2x 10-model Tactical/Inductii squads, a 5-model Seeker squad, a Land Raider Carrier, an autocannon turret/volkite sponson Sicaran, a couple Rhinos, and a Land Speeder).

do you understand that 40k skitarii are the starved remnants of 30k greatness
>>
>>98765325
>why would there be a penalty to hit the guys you assume already got hit pretty bad
The idea is the battlefield is littered with corpses, wreckage, and smoke. The rescuing army knows the location of the survivors but the enemy force is basically just laying down fire almost blindly trying to mop up. Turns are only seconds real time. So turn one is the crazy aftermath of the allies getting beat; infantry hunkering down in burned out buildings amongst the corpses hanging out windows and scattered, any vehicles are ghosts in the smoke amongst wreckage. The game unfolds as it becomes clear where the survivors are as reinforcements arrive.

So instead of any checks to see if they're aiming at real targets or hard distance visibility the idea is they're blasting everything and the 6s to hit are lucky hits. You can assume the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s "hit" a corpse or was a speculative shot through smoke or into shadows.

This 6x4 area is just a snap shot of a larger battle where the daring rescue is happening. The 2k points of enemy forces are the first wave to just barely arrive in this zone so they don't know the exact location of the individual soldiers of the allies.

>I love hidden deployment tokens they are beloved but I don't think they would work well in this scenario.

I made a mission based on my deep love for hidden deployment and gives my answer to the TQ. This is for LI but it would work with any version of Epic and maybe HH(?). Its an urban combat mission but more MOUT Hamlet than a basic LShapedRuingrad.

The urban area takes up about 1/3 to 1/2 of the table, closer to 1 short table edge than another. the urban terrain should be dense enough to prevent unimpeded LOS inside with walls or other obscuring terrain on the edges to block LOS from outside the town looking in.

The defending force deploys fully hidden with a healthy amount of decoy tokens
>Infantry starts garrisoning structures or in ruins.
>Vanguard, Bastions and Light Armour deploy anywhere within the town and outside attacker LOS.
>Tanks and artillery deploy in town, out of LOS etc. They use a modified hidden token with a pre-chosen the direction they will face when the unit is revealed. They deploy "hull down" surrounded by a snug revetment that gives them a cover save but they have to reverse their entire length out of it to move freely ( a paper cut out works fine to represent the revetment).
The idea being they are meant to be placed strategically at command good lines of fire and stall enemies
>No titans or super-heavies

A much larger attacking force deploys normally in an area projecting out from the short table edge opposite the town to within around 12-6" from the edge of the town. They have no unit restrictions.

The objective is for the attackers to clear the town block by block with the town being divided into sections for calculating points and a point is given to attackers for every section cleared and opposite to defenders.
>>98764098

I wouldn't mind but generally its like GW wargame players' diverse opinions on any house rules.
>>
>>98765429

An alternative objective would be to place the town directly in the center of the map (preferably making it more square shaped than rectangular) with the attackers deploying all around it. The objective being that the defenders gain points for every unit that either survives the full rounds or makes it to a table edge. Attackers gain points for killing them.

I don't vibe the same way with making HH misisons but if you were adapting it then things should more closely follow cityfight. You should make the city a heavily ruined city with places to hunker down (no garrisonable, destructable structures) and unlike epic scale you can put a lot more focus on rooftops and vertical terrain like in the OG OG Battlezone: Cityfight. Walkways between buildings and clearing buildings top floor down would be lit.

>>
Why no volkite sicaran? I’ve always found weird that the anti mass infantry version uses a punisher cannon compared to most other 30k stuff.
>>
>>98766324
Because FW hasn't made one. The reason is really that simple.

In-universe the lack of volkite turret for sicaran can easily be explained by volkite being barely understood technology, and being somewhat jealously guarded by the Mechanicum. The sicaran was also a completely new tank, not build using a single STC, so even fitting existing heavy volkite weaponry on it could easily run into a lot of issues. Besides dogmatic magos probably having qualms about it.
Also, most anti-infantry 30k stuff has bolter, flamer or auto weapons, or some form of missile system.

I always felt that the Sicaran was the perfect chassis for mounting various goofy guns on, like the whole "putting Dread weapons on tanks" post the other day

SOME of those are cool and could totally be made to work. The doom blaster for example is basically already "fine as is", just imagine a muych bigger one with a more modern aesthetic and it looks cool no? The death dealer also clearly got reincarnated as the lord of skulls.

Many of them do just look bad. Its not even "theyre weird", this isnt an issue of impractical designs or whatever (its chaos, who gives a shit), its an issue of "these all look the same and are just cartoony". A part of that is that theyre epic models made with old technology, so theres limited space and you need to have the models have really emphasized features

Theres a line between "this is an otherworldly nightmare engine unbeholden to the rules of science (as much as 40k has those)" and "this is a fischer price toy", and thats a line the tower of skulls fails at.

Yup, its nice. Especially since the tzeench demon rules basically state that malefic units can cross-faction join without any penalty (the rules for wrong dominion demons are a "specific" exception to the rule that malefic shit ignores mental modifiers). Thats usually a good exchange. Its better to take d3 wounds than have a unit rendered useless.

Their immunity to negative modifiers also means they dont actually fail tests that often. They ignore fear and the modifiers that come with status weaponry.

>Those drill things are also there
Termite.

And yes, they exist (I have one). but theyre more expensive. A drill is - objectively - better, it simply does more, it comes with guns (not bad ones either) and works as a transport once you arrive, but there are times you dont need that, you just need to put a unit somewhere as cheaply as possible, and thats where a drop pod comes in.

>>98768563
>Big hurt that there's only one Deepstrike per turn.
I agree. I actually rather like the DS rules "individually" but the 1/turn thing really annoys me, it makes DS super competetive against itself, youre thinking "this unit is cool, but I already have a deep strike!" and thats just no fun.

Either have it scale with game size (1/1k pts?) or have some detachments that can drop in together. So say a double drop pod detachment thats lets you have all of them come in at once.

unfortunately it would have been all-metal and the size of a modern Stormbird because of those big-ass fans
>>
>>98768638
I can support the concept of everyone arriving together in single wave, though now it'd rework it as a Master of Descent or Warmonger's ability of making up to half your stuff arrive when he arrives.
And the rest gets to roll as normal, but they get to roll, unlike now where nobody rolls after the first Deepstrike.

It was also cool that many forms of arrivals also caused a Pinning test. Puts the Shock in Shock Assault.

But it was so wrong that they weren't restricted to bunch up like 7E did, which allowed conga lines.

We could easily survive Deepstrike melee if they scattered and had to bunch up.

half the cost of a Shield Captain to increase the range of the "your line has no power here" spell? cheap at twice the price

>>98767785
the volley cannon? because it's better than the bolt cannon at clearing off mooks, because it's got twice the anti-armor range of the las-pulser (so the extra damage happens over more time instead of gambling big on the glass cannon), because you only want adrathic devastators for killing ogryns, robots and character blobs and maybe satties
>>
>>98768723
>because it's better than the bolt cannon at clearing off mooks
Not 20pts better. Its shorter range, lower S and D1. Yes, it probably does a bit better into tacticals, but you are paying 20 pts for that thing in an already expensive army and unit.

>because it's got twice the anti-armor range of the las-pulse
Which doesent matter because youre a melee oriented jetbike unit. And S8 sucks for getting through armor even WITH armorbane.

Even if you assume the volley cannon fires twice as much. it does less to vehicles, even the low AV ones where its S8 isnt entirely useless. And this is WITHOUT armor breaker factored in (and once again, its more points than the las pulsar).
>>
>>98768723
>half the cost of a Shield Captain to increase the range of the "your line has no power here" spell?
Yes, a command slot and 80pts to slightly buff the power of a not very strong ability (custodes dont have fear and most units in the game are ld8+ and therefore pass the vexilia test most of the time).

It would be at least tolerable if he himself came with the thing, but he doesent, you need to add dead weight to a custodian unit to even get any benefit out of him.

Or, on the jetbikes, that fuckass spear with S10 D4 armorbane (if memory serves).

But thats my point, the weapon just has no reason to exist, its not good enough to serve as a long range threat (on a unit that wants to do melee stuff), it doesent do enough up close to compete with alternatives, and its the most expensive weapon option they have.
>>
>>98768748
It's 80pts for a new detachment
It solves the biggest problem of Custodes list building, which was the fact that you had to pay 165pts for each auxiliary detachment after the 2 you get from Prefect
Marines get a 50pt Optae that has no saves but a 3+ and has to pay 15pts for a thunder hammer to be useful, the proconsul is 85pts for 2+/5++ and a AP2 weapon at initiative
I don't know about you, I'd gladly take the Hykanatoi proconsul even if he was just a beatstick

I fucking LOVE Attacker and defender missions. My personal favorite are games outta the planatary assault and or custom games were the objective for the defender is to hold out for x amount of turns, while the attacker is to either go for kill points or a specific objective, with some units able to be renforced.
Example being
Defender gets access to terrain/fortifications, if the attack can destroy that objective, it lets them bring on another heavy unit or respawn one of their destroyed units.
>>
>>98768885
Planetary Assault was so based. We really like the one that had a bunch of forts in the center and it was an all out assault on it.
>>
>>98768820
I havent seen any fists take them regardless, theyre just so niche in what they are and offer. Kitting them out ends up at a unit only slightly cheaper than a centurion or consul but worse at combat (and much more fragile).
>>
>>98768795
>>98769465
That's because marines have centurions and consuls. Shield captains can only get officer of the line as a prime advantage, so every shield captain past the first is an optae with a massive uncharge anyway.
>>
>>98769497
My counterarguments are: "shield captains are actually praetors", not optae (looking at the combat capabilities) and "custodes arent that detachment hungry anyways" (theyre an extremely elite force that just flat out CANT run that many units with super stacked special aux detachments full of prime slots ready for logistical benefit splashing)
>>
>>98769205

>>
>>98768342

>>
>>
>>98770016
Thats basically the ideal unit for them. Well, the actual ideal unit for them is probably the dark angels interemptors with their plasma flamers, but TSS (whether plasma or melta) are another great unit for it.

Gets them where they need to be as cheaply as possible (lets pts than the rhino) and the unit gets to do its super high impact high damage thing without caring about charging restrictions.
>>
>>98768795
>And no one takes optae
Very much so. Pay +30 pts to unlock twice as many detachments, +1WS, +1Ini, 2+ save and other stuff that I take for granted.
It is so very difficult to justify Optaes beyond fluff reasons (why would sn army have two captains instead of a captain and two lieutenants)
>>
>>98770579
I think optae exist as a budget option. For when you REALLY need that extra detachment but dont want to spend the extra points for a centurion. But they could have been like 40 pts imo and been fine.

>why would sn army have two captains instead of a captain and two lieutenants
Isnt the praetor the captain?
>>
>>98770579
>It is so very difficult to justify Optaes beyond fluff reasons (why would sn army have two captains instead of a captain and two lieutenants)
And even then, it makes more fluff sense for it to be a captain and two of his advisors or specialists (consuls) like a librarian and chaplain, or siege breaker and warmonger. Would make more sense in zone mortalis, if everyone wasn't just bringing a praetor and 20 legion elites anyway...
>>
>>98770626
Zm, as currently set up, kind of encourages "praetor and retinue". The new detachments are designed to make it easier.

Plus the reaction is worth more when you have less of them base (due to lower pts limit).

Yes, exactly, the lord chaplain of my force is my centurion, the leader of the standard troops and siege equipment, the koryphaus is the warleader handing out elites and expert material from his own personal guard while secretly planning for a hostile takeover. I've set up my forces to be split between "the chosen", elite forces like veterans and command squads led by the praetor, "the faithful", all the Corrupted and demonic units like gal vorbak, anointed, and malefic troops led by the delegatus, "the fervent", all the terminators and destroyers led by the chaplain/centurion, and then "the laity", the common pool of troops, heavy weapons, and tanks everyone draws from

I have something a bit similar. The terminator forces are an atramentar atache under the command of the (atramentar prime) centurion, send to assist my praetor (but really to make sure hes staying in line, as his unorthodox methods have raised concerns).

He has a rivalry with my praetors right hand man/champion (not literally a legion champion, just "chosen warrior"), who is normally a paragon of battle (but cant be when the atramentar centurion is around) and who leads the common mobs into battle more often than not.

You do need 3 of them most of the time unless you're spamming the same two unit types again and again.
Like how do you get 2 grave wardens, 2 LR Explorator, 1 Deathshroud and 1 LR Carrier on a single Centurion? That's 4 unit types, so you don't — you turn all LR into Carriers, take them on the Land Raider detachment, and use up 2 primes on Logistical, meaning you ought to take a Legion-specific detachment, as they have a prime.

Well lucky legions, their aux detachments do get primes. Mechanicum doesn't, they need a High Command for that.

It is a passive trait; it doesn't help you kill the enemy better like Impact (I) does – it helps you not die as hard instead.
I don't mind it cancels reactions as it's technically already a reaction.

I guess it is thematic that EC players are divided between those who would give themselves to FnP6 and Status immunity, and those who would eschew the palliatives of the downtrodden.
The perfect defense is to kill the enemy before they get to retaliate!

It helps you kill power armored marines easier, which you'd be better off shooting - but can't because Stupefy forces snapshots.
Against terminators, your weapons need breaching anyways or already wound on 2s, so not really.

Tell me about marine strategy and lists.
I have this idea that marine lists have one murder ball where the melee warlord and his melee goonies are, that it throws at targets. Either as a battering ram (WE) or as a gotcha at the point of maximum vulnerability (RG)...but it is melee and it's thrown at people.
And they have supporting arms and transports to help them do that mission, whilst holding terrain or keeping the enemy bogged down with yet other lesser murder balls.

Am I far from the mark?

Between overwatch and attacking first, it's far from guaranteed. Only 3 terminators need to die and the odds turn in favour of the leviathan surviving the first round of combat.

For melee deathball, I was thinking 5 WS5 Termies. I know Spartans exist, but I think it's easier to use multiple 5-man Termie squads (WS5 or 4 even) in multiple baskets, than having a single basket your opponent can focus fire into.

That's how both WS and AL do it, right? Can't suffer a decapitation blow if there is no center to strike at.

Nta, what's the answer to Castraferrums and Leviathans? Boxnoughts seem light enough, but Levis idk. Maybe it better tangos with 5 Catas for 3 turns than it running loose doing untold damage

Terminator squads of 5 is much more practical. There just aren't that much units that are worth throwing 10 terminators in a spartan at, whilst it is quite easy to focus or evade/delay/ignore the spartan party bus.

Yup, thats much more practical. A couple terminator squads in land raiders is honestly pretty viable and good, land raiders are still hard to deal with and by splitting up the baskets you often provide more threats than can be easily dealt with.

Its easy to kill one spartan, or focus/avoid one terminator unit, but multiples at once? Much harder.

I know a DA player who runs like 3 land raiders full of terminators, shits brutal.

Guns, any heavy ones will do.

>leviathans
Theyre m6(?) heavy. Just ignore them if theyre melee, or melee them if theyre ranged.

Or: if youre a war criminal. Corvidae lascannons.

>Corvidae lascannons.
autocannons*

Seriously that shits brutal. Like 17 wounds to a leviathan on average.

Heavy tank killing firepower is the biggest threat to leviathans. It's often long range so the leviathan can't return fire, and it has higher strength and damage values than melee weapons have. Squads with melta weapons can also bring down leviathans, 3 damage for each wound that goes through stacks up quick.

>>98775800
nta but that's why I run my leviathan with one claw one ranged weapon, and walk it onto an objective. People can't just ignore the leviathan forever when it will decimate any line unit that needs to get close to the objective marker.

I dont think any of the leviathans guns are individually impactful enough (except the phosphex). Maybe the grav?

The volkite nipple guns plus a storm cannon or melta lance is enough shots to put meaningful damage on MEQ units.
