>What is Lancer?
Lancer is a TTRPG about narratives, customizable mechs, and the pilots who crew them.

Set thousands of years in the future, Lancer imagines a future where humanity has spread to the stars after weathering terrible ecological collapse on Earth.

Players of Lancer adopt the roles of mech pilots. Some groups will fight for Union, working to rectify the crimes of previous administrations. Others, for a corpo-state, working to advance private interests while lining their pockets.

Lancer offers deep mech customization, a wide range of player backgrounds, and a system and setting with room for any story you and your group want to tell.

What system to use for out of mech content? I'm seriously considering DnD 5e Cuz it's easy to understand and also uses d20.
>>
>>98761715
The common recommendations I hear are simple stuff like Blades in the Dark. One friend tried Sprawl and had a good time with it. If you wanted to really go in on the house style you could use ICON for pilot stuff but that'd be a mess of systems.

>party is mired in urban warfare working for an invading force
>the moment they stop to rearm and repair some war journo immediately rushes over them
>everyone just politely tells him to fuck off and that he should not go near mech pilots like that, both because they are a prime target themselves and that they almost blasted him the moment he approached them
>diva character cant resist and agrees to answer a few question much to everyones complaints
>usual spiel of "we are professionals hired to fight we have no real stake in whatever political issues you guys have but your dudes are valiant adversaries etc etc"
>later they stumble into an enemy mech detachment stuck in a civilian traffic jam as they try to evacuate
>big dick ultra pilot just out of his mech tearing into some civvie that caused the jam while other pilots are dismounted trying to organize the traffic safely, easy targets to test my party's morality
>party actually does a sensible choice and sneaks away without engaging, they next fight these dudes show up as extra reinforcements making the fight much harder
>turns out the journo from before followed them, and recorded the mechs walking away from an easy ambush to avoid civvie casualties
>enemy gov immediately jumps on it making it a big propaganda piece using the footage alongside the interview to go like "even the foreign mercenaries are more civilized than the enemy that hired them!" and as a not so subtle attempt convince the party to switch sides
>players dont know it yet but that means the enemy forces now have actual respect for them.

how should i use this besides the obvious like an enemy mech sparing a pc in he ejects or busts them out of their mech?
>>
>>98764391
>have actual respect for them.
wouldn't they just kill them super fast then?
>>
>>98764391
Aside from the common courtesy of fighter pilots, one way to show it could be a three-way skirmish where this time the party is the ones called in as reinforcements to follow through on their current faction ambushing the enemy pilots. If the enemy is putting out propaganda piece about your party not taking cheap shots, their current employer is going to find someone willing to take cheap shots. Put the party in a situation where they can either dogpile on the guys they previously spared and make things worse for everyone while the enemy pilots are reluctant to fight them directly, or else they have to decide right then and there to defect.

how many factions would you say is appropriate for a planetary conflict? (though smaller than earth and significantly less populated)

I'm currently at 3 major factions, 4 straight up mercenary groups, 3 local defense groups (armed neutrality, possibly expanding that number) and one bigger overarching group made up out of various humanitarian/refugee organizations (diplomatic neutrality)
>>
>>98764685
>3 local defense groups (armed neutrality, possibly expanding that number) and one bigger overarching group made up out of various humanitarian/refugee organizations (diplomatic neutrality)
lole
>>
>>98764693
I don't quite understand what the problem is here?
Refugees have been part of every conflict in the history of mankind, and since the war for control over the planet is for the 2 local factions meant to be one over Legitimacy and for the third faction (Union, complex kinda) an operation to delegitimize the entire rebellion/revolution civilian casualties at this state are considered something to be avoided, resulting in several neutral refugee zones in militarily less important locations
>>
>>98764733
>don't quite understand
no shit, you can have a billion of "nootrol" groups that just happen to have a not so "nootrol" master
>>
>>98764868
the hell are you even talking about?
the overarching group isn't meant to be powerful or relevant in any real capacity, it's more a loose conglomerate of various non-combatant groups trying to present at least the illusion of a united front so the various actual combatants leave the refugee cities alone and coordinate disaster relief on a larger scale which is necessary because the war has severely damaged the various weather control systems resulting in a string of powerful hurricanes that under peacetime would have been preemptively negated or deflected away from populated areas

for game purposes it's meant to be akin to a red-cross sign letting players visibly know that there's non-combatants in the area as a form of complication
>>
>>98764685
The way I like to set up factions depends on how many cities (or otherwise centralized settlements) you have. If you have two big citties for example, you can have one faction controlling each city. If there's only one big city or the entire planet is full of cities, you can have as many as you want with factions fighting in the cities themselves. Another option is to have a "home" force (the planet's inhabitants) and an "outside" force (invaders, spacers vs planetbound, citiy folk vs widlerness folk).
i will say however that I feel like you have too many factions for a campaign, unless you're planning an extrmely long and in-depth campaign or are planning on using the setting over multiple campaigns. I'd argue you could homogenize "neutrals" into just one group, "mercenaries" into another, etc. you can have mercenary groups as flavor but not really their own thing. The perfect example is Armored Core 6 IMHO. You have BALAM vs ARQUEBUS, with the RLF as "neutrals". Sure BALAM has the redguns, and DAFENG, etc but the big groups are just A vs B

Where there's Mechs, there's supposed to be hot women painted on the side of them. How badly has this game been made sexless? I'm coming from Battletech where they deliberately designed the new minis to be hard-to-impossible to put pinup art onto. Is there any overtly horny content for this Mech game the way we used to get before the prudes took over?

Your mech (and hell, your pilot, within anthrochauvinist reason) can look like whatever the hell you want, it doesn't matter. That said, the default artwork is Kill Six Billion Demons applied to extreme transhumanism, do with it what you will.

The enemy mercenaries start following the party's space twitter account and like their recent post from a decade ago

2 major factions, 2 minor factions.
>>
>>98766497
I wouldn't really say putting pinups on a mech is "sexual content". They used to do that shit all the time to planes in real life. Shit was cash.
>>
>>98765822
the idea behind multiple mercenary groups was that each of them has a bit of a unique style of mechs and behavior and have the various group names be shorthands for players but I get why it might get confusing, I'll think about it more

a similar idea was behind the armed neutrals, though in this case it would be that each of them is located in a different type of environment they're adapted to, as well as having enough of them, and them being localized that it's possible to set up a couple missions going through the territory of one as a strategic maneuver (and course a bit of RP opportunities for players to question if they/their supported faction is still doing the right thing and what not)

I'll see if I can't simplify, current larger amount of factions is in no small part due to trying to give players enough freedom to kinda pick their own path
>>
>>98766342
The game has a specific kind of horny and it’s not the kind that cishet white men would like. I’m talking pride flags on the mechs and a low-resolution pinup of a man with tits against the bisexual pride flag.

That said, the fan art manages to be tolerable. The nature of the game means you’ll get a lot of the Usual Suspects, but there’s a healthy amount of voluptuous women in skintight bodysuits and handsome men who are likely boning them.

Our group just got to LL1. If I want to just go as fast as possible with melee (no teleportation) what license should I take? I’m pretty new to the game
>>
FFS I was looking around intrigued by the concept of the game and just read the opening blurb.
I now want to make a few-shot about carrying on a false flag mission in order to have the excuse to genocide civilians (which must be a part of active play, and be done on the mechs).

Tips?

---

Also, is still anything outside of a mech "Roll 10+ and you did it, YAY!" or did they throw some new module/valid 3rd party material for that?
>>
>>98767908
Look at the list of mechs. See which ones have higher speed, and take note of what unique abilities the mech frame has that will help you move around or be better at melee.
>>
>>98767908
Blackbeard has a big fuckoff sword and a grappling hook.
>>
>>98767908
at LL1 there's honestly not that many options to go fast, and most of them will come from talents
you could try to crit-fish with dual fold knives on an everest, and add hunter talents onto that

alternatively could take bulwark mods to not be slowed by difficult terrain or mag clamps to move over elevations

skirmisher also lets you move faster, so could always just commit to boosting then skirmishing with a heavy melee

but it's LL1 there's only so much you can do

Hard for me to get too excited, since I already cobbled together my own version and will be running one of the final sessions tomorrow. For one group, the default system worked just fine. For another group, I wish I'd implemented World of Darkness, a simple and straightforward system built for improvising actions.

Eh, I'll bite. This is the sort of thing that depends on the group, and what they can all agree upon. I'm not the ERP-ing sort, but I won't make some broad prohibition about it for other peoples' tables.

>Tips?
Civilian mobs are probably more numerous and less protected than an infantry Squad, so they would have higher HP and get no damage resistance from non-AoE weapons. Assume every point of damage done is 1 innocent life. You monster.
Karrakin Trade Baronies book introduces some FitD-style playbooks and special abilities for pilots, as well as a "Stress" mechanic representing various harms. I'm not personally a fan of those mechanics. Otherwise, yes, 10+ is a success (unless you make it Risky/Heroic)

Trying to figure out a Stortie build that uses the Cannibal, but you also need the catalytic hammer so the build doesn't even come online until LL7. Who decided the only loading weapon in the game requires LL2 in Tortuga?
>>
>>98771430
My understanding of the Storte (not having played it) is that it's best to keep at least one non-Loading weapon on it anyway, to force a fake crit with its Truesilver trait. So you might as well skip the Cat Hammer and use a regular melee, unless you want to build around Cat Hammer with a non-loading ranged weapon.

>Otherwise, yes, 10+ is a success (unless you make it Risky/Heroic)

What I'm not clear about is what's the purview of that.

I can just say that I want to pull of a heist to free a veteran guy ace pilot from SUPERMAX, I roll 20+ (I guess, must be Heroic), and then it's done, let's just smash-cut to jumping off the walls into the cockpit of our robots and then the actual tactical combat starts?
>>
>>98772365
You could break that down into multiple skill checks, like planning the heist, getting inside, getting out, getting away, with paths for passing and failing
The thing is that Lancer really isn’t trying to be passable at anything besides mech combat, but the game pretends like maybe you could do something there. The corebook is like ‘you could have politics! You could be a pirate or a cultist or a mercenary or a knight or a scientist’ but the actual mechanics of the game are written from the assumption that you’re a soldier who just returns to base and waits for the next deployment. It’s a failure to either set expectations or accommodate actual roleplaying
Compare it to something like Spire. Spire says ‘you’re a dark elf and you’re part of the Ministry and you stay inside this megastructure and you try to make small changes to the status quo.’ It doesn’t pretend to be open-ended, instead being focused on what the designers wanted. Lancer is wargame-style mech combat with some barebones roleplaying elements on the side, and you need to either be very creative, use your own roleplaying system for narrative play, or accept that Lancer isn’t built for anything other than Brief->Buildup->Combat->Talk->Repeat
>>
>>98771430
>>98771747
definitely works better if you're going with a decent regular main melee for duelist purposes (you really want an accurate main melee for crits, and the best way to get that is with duelist cause all the inherently accurate melee's are locked at LL3)
especially since the cannibal gives you 2 chances to trigger a reload

>What mech game isn't shit tho?
Any mech game that's made by people who actually like mechs and don't just rip off dnd. Want biomecha nightmare? Adeptus Evangelion. Want gritty and detailed western mech combat? Battletech/MechWarrior. Want anachronistic fantasy mech duelling? Embryo Machine. Want Japanese style flashy high tech mech combat? Angel Wing with the girls refluffed as mechs. Want a miserable experience where your basically playing fantasy adventurers fighting orcs and goblins but saying they are mechs, written by writers whom openly hate the genre and see it only as another vector to push The Message? Play lancer.

>>98770044
A queeftopian going to war never sees xer family ever again because travel in lancer is relativistic (grounded and gritty mud and lasers setting ples understand) so travel between systems takes centuries and no, don't try to think on the implications of that because the writers didn't. Unless of course there's the magical jump gates that get set up eventually but are pretty much the priority target for both sides in a war so no they cannot be used to alleviate the logistics issues. If only one side (the designated good guys perhaps) had access to a magical ai that ensured they always had what they needed where they needed it centuries in advance. Of course, that would be bad writing, as would making the designated good guys overwhelmingly powerful and destined to win, so I'm sure they writers never did that.
>>
>>98773142

>>98773142
they're capable of near-light travel and live like 300 years, a 3 year travel time isn't the biggest of deals for them
most soldiers tend to be local, as in within a 10 light year area
>>
>>98773239
So travel is reletavistic unless there are special jump gates because mud and lasers hard scifi but now its also possible to fill travel between systems without gates in a matter of a year or so.

put a bunch of size 4/5 tokens to represent civvies, if you want some vehicles maybe a size 1 car or so, civvies being people that hopefully have enough brainpower to drop on the ground once your dirlewanger party starts shooting get permanent soft cover, as that other anon said, 1hp=1 singular life in the mob

also i would suggest adding bastion npc's trying to protect the civvies putting themselves between the players and and the civvies, maybe get some fast moving offensive mechs trying to keep the players distracted too
>>
>>98773203
He’s being a dork about it but there’s a real truth he’s trying to touch on. The setting has a lot of stuff they refuse to touch on because it would be too real for their hopecore tone
The books make it clear that worlds that agree to start integrating with Union are often asked for a military tithe, and that Union uses auxiliaries from all over the galaxy. Which means if you’re from a poorer world, Union can call you up to leave your home, possibly never seeing it again even if you live through the war, returning only as a fish out of temporal water at best, to fight on behalf of the Metropolitan worlds, the unbelievably wealthy utopia you are fighting for. The Union Navy that projects hegemonic force and protects the core worlds is almost certainly staffed with largely Diasporan crews who are just hoping to send manna back home to loved ones they’ll never see again. The people they’re protecting have never faced a single hardship in their life, and print their luxury goods with metals mined by Karrakis serfs.
There’s fertile ground for storytelling about first-world exploitation, about how much Union hates having to use Diasporans for their campaigns but have no choice if they want to keep pushing the golden age outward, about soldiers learning to accept their fate and fight for a better future even when everything’s been taken from them. They don’t need to make everything Grimdark and evil, and yet they don’t even cover these themes because it would make Union too imperfect
>>
>>98773338
>So travel is reletavistic unless there are special jump gates because mud and lasers hard scifi but now its also possible to fill travel between systems without gates in a matter of a year or so.

they're capable of traveling at like 99.5% lightspeed anon, that's relativistic but it also means that travel to a system 3 lightyears away takes 3 years (roughly) not centuries, which would be traveling at like 1% light speed which isn't even relativistic speed, look up what that word means
>>
>>98773438
I don't quite think they're never seeing their families again, the furthest the Union projects direct power outwards from a blink gate is like 20 light years with the majority of worlds being within 10 light years of a blink gate
and the omni-net is instant communication across the entire galaxy, so at worst you're away for 40 years though more likely it's like 20, during which time you've been able to maintain contact directly with everyone you want

add a lifespan of 300 years to it rather than 80 and a 20 year deployment is akin to a 6 year deployment for us, which sucks majorly, not gonna argue with that, but it's not completely alienating given you've been in contact

would result in an even larger amount of dear john's though
>>
>>98773462
From the core book:
>If your players travel with a mercenary company, camp followers in tow, then time dilation may be of no great concern – their friends and families can easily travel with them. But if they travel alone, their families left behind, it is possible that their homes will be vastly different when they return from even one trip
If you’re being deployed somewhere other than your homeworld, that’s minimum two trips. If you’re going to be part of an expeditionary force, it could be several. If you’re in the navy, you’re being made into a Cosmopolitan whether you like or not
For the record, I think this kind of this is good. I dislike that ThirdComm’s Union is basically just Camelot, a fairy tale nation of justice and plenty that you never actually get to see. I think you can be hopecore while still dealing with all these limitations and tough decisions, and Union can feel more like a real place by describing how they deal with them. It’s just a shame that the book glosses over all of this stuff. It glosses over the revolution against SecComm, it glosses over how Metropolitans actually live, it glosses over how Union does recruiting, it glosses over all that and yet still spends dozens of pages on a fucking org chart and droning on about the economic bureau and stuff like that
>>
>>98773516
true enough, forgot about that
though I do think that the people who sign up are supposed to be mostly volunteers, though a good amount of them are going to be volunteers who joined up because of relentless propaganda and not really aware of the realities

>It glosses over the revolution against SecComm
An adventure set during that time could be interesting, heavily restricted in what mechs you could actually use though
>>
>>98773443
No. Your not instantly accelerating to lightspeed or you would be reduced to atomic mush. It's more like you spend a decade accelerating, a year or more traveling at 99.5 relativity in suspended hibernation as that speed would do funny things to your interpretation of reality, then another decade of deacceleration. So 21 years for a short trip, 42 round, plus deployment time, but all this us assuming they can actually reach 99.5 of lights peed. That's a lot of reaction mass your burning, and somehow I doubt your carrying a moons worth of mass so actually centuries per trip makes a lot more se-
Oh wait, the magic matter printers that pull matter and energy from paracausial bumfuck nowhere.

>>98773516
Pretty much everything here is fanfic. The book doesn't "gloss over", it doesn't even consider those things. The union are the good guys because they just are. They have magic printers that generate matter out of nowhere and they made communism work but still have cyberpunk megacorps who may or may not be the enemy but are also regulated by the states God ai that can predict anything and everything perfectly. All the "well such and such are exploited to mine metals for the inner elite" and "actually its not communism its a such and such" is fanfic that is in direct opposition to the writers canon.
>>
>>98773589
Everyone stop feeding this troll he’s just bullshitting
>>
>>98773613
Please tell us where you are getting your reaction mass then. To accelerate/deaccelerate in space you need mass, the more/longer you burn the more mass you need. To hit anywhere close to lightspeed you need an ungodly amount of mass, and the same again to slow down, and this is not factoring in manoeuvring and course correction burns.
Unless you have a magic printer shitting mass into the engine from nowhere you are having to lug an insane amount with you, and because of the extra mass you then need even more mass to generate tge thrust to counter the carried mass on your initial burn. Of course, you can just say you don't understand physics or space travel.
All the rest is straight from the book.
>>
>>98773656
it's simple, you just don't think about such trivialities. mud and lasers was a good term because it was a good term so including it meant that everything is even gooder and gooderer even - simple and brilliant
>>
>>98773589
>No. Your not instantly accelerating to lightspeed or you would be reduced to atomic mush. It's more like you spend a decade accelerating
No it's fucking not, if you accelerate at 1g it takes about a year at worst, and 1g is literally the safest acceleration possible

Now if you're the union which can put people in stasis you can easily ramp up to accelerations of 20g while people are on ice letting you get up to cruising speed far faster
>>
>>98773656
First of you can drastically reduce the required reaction mass by using laser-pushing powered a series of stations in orbit of a star, this isn't even scifi, this is literally something we know is possible with today's material sciences, it's just far beyond our industrial capabilities to build but that's no problem for the drastically larger union

secondly inertial dampening and flat out direct gravitational field manipulation are technologies that exist in the Lancer universe, it doesn't take a particularly genius to figure out how to use that to radically reduce the required reaction mass or flat out negate the need
>>
>>98773046
>especially since the cannibal gives you 2 chances to trigger a reload

>>98773758

>>
Did anybody ever make mech-specific tables for Structure and Overheat malfunctions?

Would be cool to have, I dunno, a Minotaur just hammer-space its pilot to a random location or a Monarch locking its missiles onto EVERYTHING itself included
>>
>>98773589
So you read the core rule book and stopped there, because travel and the exploitation of serf labor for materials are described in the Long Rim and Karrakin Trade Baronies books, respectively. I agree that I wish the core rulebook talked less about org charts and more about actual thought put into how the world works, but no core rulebook for any game contains everything about the setting.

Also trying to use "fanfic" as a gotcha for an RPG is laughable. By its very nature, everyone who plays it is creating fanfic for how things work, because that's how running a game works.
>>
>>98774426

>Slowed
>Can't make any special moves granted by talents, systems or weapons
This is surprisingly restrictive. Running Superheavy melee Drake, if I leave my Assault Cannon spun-up, I can't make use of Executioner or Siege Specialist, nor can I use Accelerate from my Sunzi 1 dip.
Similarly, the idea of dipping into Mourning Cloak for the Fold Knife (after pivoting to the LHAC) and Singularity Motivator wouldn't allow teleporting while spun-up. Although I see nothing preventing me from teleporting if I engage Fortress Protocol just on its own.
>>
>>98776594
Accelerate is one of those things that actually works while slowed and is great for it since it's involuntary movement
similarly you can have an ally puppet systems you around while slowed no problem either

as for dealing with slowed, high innate speed frames are pretty good for it, slowed stops being all that meaningful once you hit speed 7 or so, I've run a leviathan cannon on a Taraxacum and a slowed Taraxacum is still more mobile than half the frames out there

question for people who have tried heat-gunning
how do you handle the fact that meltdowns only occur at the end of the enemy's next turn and in the meanwhile you've basically turned them into a ridiculously powerful bomb?

it just feels overly punishing that regular damage just destroys enemies while heatgunning gives them another turn and a powerful weapon on top

the fact that some mechs looked to be as androgynous robot with feet makes it feel that romancing them is such a low hanging fruit that makes it total turn off in gooning to or even romancing mechs in general

like would you love a robot like Glados if she is depicted as a giant bitchy bimbo that wears a latex bodysuit and has a matching colorscheme towering over you?
doesn't matter what you answer thats not really what you love about a robot is it?

Remember that each LL also lets you swap one talent or swap one license, so you can start respeccing now if you decide to pursue a different build from what you started on.

IPS-N Nelson is a melee striker that loves it when you Boost. The first level also gives you Bulwark Mods, which I think is an amazing first-level investment in the long term, as most other sources of ignoring difficult terrain are by far more expensive to pursue.

Like, for example, flying. At low levels, the Type-1 Flight System is insanely expensive at 3 System Points and Size+1 Heat every time you use it, but it does let you ignore the terrain beneath you for purposes of movement. If you go for the All Theater Movement Suite from SSC, you have a much more flexible and economic method of flight instead, at the cost of having 3 SSC licenses (which might not fit your vision, though they do have some amazing melee synergy).

Other specialized forms of movement include the SSC Atlas and IPS-N Caliban from The Long Rim. Atlas is a melee-focused frame with license items that let you boost or ricochet in specific situations. Caliban is a CQB striker that can pursue targets whenever it inflicts knockback, and nearly all of its systems and license items specialize in knockback.

the series had good ideas, it's just that for some reason they walked back on their better scifi-concepts and made things more generic over time

The plot of ME1 was a pretty good subversion of your typical ancient aliens, and the lore did a very good job only using Element-0 as it's big physics break and sticking to that

Even ME2 had some decent scifi writers on board, the Geth being perfectly content with their existence and not having any desires to become individuals was a refreshing take on artificial intelligences, so naturally ME3 also fucks that up

I'm probably stupid and have misread 'special moves' as a phrase rather than the intended restriction on movement granted by a talent, system or weapon.

So is this game purely about making theoretical builds or does anyone actually run this? It looks like every single combat encounter has ti be meticulously balanced for any of this to work properly. Doesn't seem feasible unless every campaign is a rigid railroad with one set encounter after the next. Like a video game or something.
>>
>>98789480
nah the trick to running a balanced encounter is to prepare multiple reinforcements and hold them back or send more depending on how players are doing
and it's not like this is a unique concept, works just as well in other ttrpg's

also the repair system is pretty forgiving
>>
>>98789480
Setting up fights from the DM side is pretty easy. Like in D&D 4e where it takes its inspiration, every NPC enemy has a category it fits in, so as long as you aren't overstuffing a fight with too many of one category, you're fine balance wise. Beyond that, it's fun finding the combos between NPCs that make them synergize well.

It is a bit railroady in the sense you can't really throw together an encounter on the go from nothing.
The game is structured with isolated "missions" in mind, each made up of 3-4 combat encounters. After each mission players repair fully and restore all limited use weapons and systems.
The best way I found for structuring a campaign is giving players a bounty board, with each job translating to a pre-prepared mission. It's not such a big problem though since interstellar mech deployment isn't anything like wandering around as medieval adventurers or cyberpunk lowlifes, so players have much more limited options to just wander off and fuck around in mechs.
You also almost always have to use some quantum troll shenanigans, where you prepare one encounter, but present it in different context depending on what your players do.
Probably the best comparison would be running Necromunda or 40k narrative campaign but with roleplay.
>>
>>98789480
Combat is pretty easy to balance, # of players X 1.5 or 2 (depending on how good your PCs are) = number of NPCs for the combat. Grunts count as 0.25, but should probably count as 0.5, Ultra count as 3, Elite & Vets count as 2. And Lancer has multiple combat situations so it's not always a team deathmatch. And it's not too hard for PCs to comprehend that its 3-4 encounters per level-up.

There is also a Lancer/FF inspired ttrpg Beacon that also has narrative encounters you could get some ideas from but heads up that system is very player-sided.
>>
>>98789893
I've never really understood the hate for quantum trolls. Like, your party is going to fight a roughly appropriate encounter if they don't deliberately try to ignore the DM's plot hooks and go off to blow up an orphanage or actively antagonize the biggest motherfucker in earshot. Yeah the party can make choices that changes what color they are and what the non-combat bits look like but you're gonna be smacking a dude you're statistically likely to beat at the end of the day.
>>
>>98789893
You can throw an encounter together if you're familiar with the enemy types. Def a lot more involved process than say, cyberpunk red
But certainly doable
>>98792810

>>
>>98766342
Mechs are supposed to be customizable. It's not a game you play with minis anyway, so whatever you can draw or cook up in 2D or 3D software is fair game.
The frames in the official books are just representations of what that frame might look like in the hands of the average lancer, and are there to give the players some inspiration in case they want to follow the setting more closely.

I'm currently prepping session 115 of my campaign. (Mistakes were made) As others have said, the game is not that difficult to run from the GM side. I started off with "balanced" encounters and kept a reinforcement wave or two up my sleeve. After a while, you get a better sense for what the PCs can approximately handle. And if you set up the larger scenario and story right, even the PCs being defeated or having to scrape by with a dismounted pilot can add to the fun.

For a hacker/support, how do these licences look?

Pegasus 3
Lich 3

are you actually straight up running an LL12 game?
>>
>>98795747
I'm just planning ahead.
>>
>>98795761
generally speaking it's more effective to build at LL6
by the time you get beyond that you're mostly going to be patching holes in your build cause you flat out don't have the mounts and system points to actually make sure of full 12 license levels
>>
>>98795771
By LL12 you are basically running multiple simultaneous builds is how I understand it. I don't think any individual mech needs 12 licences or even has the systems to benefit from 12 licenses at once. I'm more checking to see if I have all my bases covered or if things can be done better.

Well, I've had some player rotation. One was still finding her feet when she needed to bow out. Another changed up her build constantly, shifting between 4 different base frames that were all zippy melee fighters. A third has kept to a core theme of beam spam, but cycled through a few iterations to find an optimum balance of accuracy, damage, and not getting annihilated when someone breaks through the defensive line. The Balor pilot keeps losing his mech, but it always reassembles itself in the same configuration, because he thinks it is perfect exactly as it is. And the flying Lancaster pilot, a late-story addition to the team, was only present for a single LL bump, though the attached NHP did get a plot-related upgrade.

I typically see it done with 2-3 frames depending on the type of coverage you're trying to get, and then dips from there. I think 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1 is more likely to get you the flexibility you're after than maxing out four licenses.

the name is exactly to annoy two players one of which its a self-hating finnoswede and the other is a norwegian lel. All the scandinavian stuff stems from the fact that sparri mercs and conscripts were employed by seccomm but with time they integrated with a few populations that shared scandi ancestry turning them into somewhat normal space nordics that sometimes larp as sparri. rather than the weird viking larpers that are the actual sparri people.

Uploading your brain into data goes against the accord

Putting your brain in a robot body seems to be a loophole as long as you don't extend your lifespan past 200 years.

Although my take is that a law is only as powerful as its ability to be enforced, so if RA wants to spend its godlike time tracking down one backwater wanker with his brain uploaded into cyberspace to punish them, that's millions of other like minded wankers without its attention.

This is how I justify the KTB getting away with some of its nonsense, like one house's army all being clones of one guy, and one mercenary team having converted themselves all into nano goo.
>>
>>98821130
>so if RA wants to spend its godlike time tracking down one backwater wanker with his brain uploaded into cyberspace to punish them, that's millions of other like minded wankers without its attention.
I'm actually doing something with that for setting I'm writing, with the local space miners managing to maintain a functioning cohesive society despite being semi-nomadic over a vast area because they're using the communal part of the profits they make off of the mining business to attract and fund a bunch of experimental life extension black-sites figuring that because there's so few of them and they're so spread out that RA isn't going to show up and try to individually hunt them down

for the most part they're your typical space miners and trucks, but then you ask the guy delivering your shipment of industrial fabricator raw material how old he is and he just goes "I kinda stopped counting after 500"

and the whole reason they actually have a society is because to them spending 20 years traveling to meet some far off cousin isn't the biggest of deals, especially not if they've got a juice asteroid in tow they're processing while on the move
>>
why would a paracausal being be limited by being """spread""" or having to take time, that's just stupid
>>
>>98822152

Because paracausal is not omnipotent or omniscient, otherwise ot could just explode people before they break its laws before they even think about doing so. It doesn't do that. It's very powerful of course, as it stole a moon and made all the machines turn on humans in the area, but its not a god, as much as its worshippers want to believe it is. If it exists in our world of causal reality, it has to truck a bit with causality at least. Which means it can't be everywhere in a whole galaxy at once.
>>
>>98823313
I think a simpler way of putting it is even if it doesn't follow the laws of causality, it does follow laws.
>>
