What do you do when your PCs get arrested? Do they eventually get put on trial, where they have a chance to defend themselves? Are they sent straight to the gallows? If you run trials, how do you run them, what usually happens?

Tell us about the last time your party was arrested, or just interesting stories where the party comes in conflict with the law. I offer this cookie as a bribe to the judge to let me off the hook.

Ten sessions in the slammer. No fast forward just sit there and do nothing.

I made a rule to stop doing trials with My old group, because they constantly got themselves arrested, insisted on playing out the trial, and without fail always managed to end up getting themselves hanged, beheaded, or tortured to death. From then on anytime they got arrested for something it was straight to the dungeons if not the axe, and since they always did this shit at low levels, they had virtually no chance of escaping and would just make a new character.

I play with new guys now and one of them is almost definitely going to be arrested during tomorrow's game, but since I assume these guys aren't as braindead, I'm willing to let a trial happen if they want.

I was playing a paladin in a corrupt city, and my party had tracked down the gang members that had burned down our recently purchased inn all the way to some warehouse. We ended up killing them all, but the city guards began to show up, and everyone else in the party knew that the right move was to just run for it.

I stayed. The rest of the party and even the DM urged me to just run, but I just cleaned up my sword and waited for the guards to appear.

I had met the captain before, and she recognized me. She ordered for me to be put in manacles as she began to interrogate me, and I didn't resist, not being entirely sure why they were treating me like I had done something wrong. I answered everything almost truthfully, just omitting that the other party members had also helped kill the gang, and the captain was functionally non-plussed. It turns out, she and all the other guards there were corrupt and had been told to kill us all, but after seeing just how stupid and unresisting I was, she decided it wouldn't hurt to throw me in jail and see if the gang's leader might have some other use for me, and if not I could always just be executed later.

My party ended up calling in a favor from one of the city's public officials, who managed to get me a public trial, and I sailed through it thanks to my high charisma, measurable aura of divine good, and my blunt manner with the truth. Rather than make me a martyr, I was released, and from that point on I became a bit of a folk hero to all the people oppressed by the gang.

The corrupt captain later was sent to assassinate me in order to make up for her not just killing me earlier, and after nearly killing me but being defeated by the rest of my party, we convinced her to turn on the gang, in part because I kept showing that there might be a path forward through idiotic idealism.

She ended up being killed by the gang leader.

We never finished that campaign, and I still kind of feel bad.

Slap them in prison and have them try to do a Great Escape. I used to keep this booklet on view by my ref screen to deter annoying 'lol random' shit.

The only reasons to put PCs in prison is because you want to do an escape arc and have the consequences dog their steps forever, or you want some local power to exploit them for a job in exchange for release.

depends on system, depends on player, depends on crime
had one autist in Deadlands, he bought few crates of nitroglicerine as he made rich character; did not mentioned crew loading it; after exploding whole train, got properly executed basically straight out of character creating, plus country wide law was made to forbid explosives transport in civilian trains
In MSHRPG aka FASERIP, they routinelly fail missions, kill civilians, make war crimes, diplomatic incidents etc. Can make Suicide Squad from characters put into gulag, one actually was put into penal batallion to be run through minefields (and fucker likely will survive that due to high body armor). Recently they started to behave better, so expulsion from hero team at most is punishment. Except not for long, as military took over control as population started see them like muties in comics; now it will be court martial.
usually after group got arrested I take players one by one for questioning, sometimes they hilariously try to implicate others
Warhammer so far they ended with fines, small body harm, except they are persons of interest in Bretonia implicated in plague spreading, this may not end good

Have someone on the outside bake them cookies and offer them to the guards and poison them to make them all fall asleep.

No self respecting guard would have a flanged mace when a good old, cheap, leaning polearm is an option.

For my Cyberpunk games:
Have to escape from jail. Pay a bond. Evetually the trial goes on in the background and the PCs will have to deal with it eventually.
