I've been thinking about making more and more custom stuff recently and I was thinking about what my characters would look like if they got their own datasheets. It's a fun little mental game. So, what do you think? Would this be a reasonably interesting character to play against? How many points should he cost to be fair?
Also, as an aside, while I was making this I noticed that Chief Librarian Tigurius doesn't have the Imperium keyword in the new codex. Simple misprint, or subtle hint at the future? Perhaps the blueberries will be humbled soon enough...
>>
>>98766550
My impression mostly aligns with what the win rate data suggests, which is that orks, dark angels, and custodes are the best, while guard is the worst.
Necrons have been near the top for years as well, and Tau are also in that top several placement as well.

Guard is probably dead last. Eldar are in rough shape too but not as bad as them.
The of course Agents are perpetually bad for years, but they actually eke out a reasonable win rate despite that.

Then there are a couple armies where just their win rate alone is misleading, because they're in rough shape but one or two broken datasheets or strategems are carrying them despite most of the book being shit, which is SoB. Hallowed Martyrs detachement strategmens reviving Morvenn Vahl gives you a high win rate, but if you removed her the book would freefall plummet, and that's not really good faction design, GW should rework them.

The one that surprises me is Marines. They have over 20 detachments to choose from, by far the most options, every special rule favors them, they have rerolls out the ass, they have undercosted stat check profiles especially gravis, they have the most players for resources to learn, and they get new stuff every week, and yet marine players somehow give themselves a 45% win rate. It must have something to do with marines being the starter noob army, so every new player plays them but doesn't have a grasp on the game's fundamentals so they lose often. Or something. Because the book and sheets are strong, so something is going on.

Here's a helpful link https://listhammer.info/stats

AoS is definitely less popular than 40K but just because there's only 3 players at your game store doesn't mean squat. It's pretty heavily played at mine, but my FLGS also does army building comps that alternate between 40K and AoS so there's more incentive there.

a thought is haunting me: there used to be a weapon (or a special rule?) in earlier editions that would worsen the result on vehicle damage table by 2, but the final result could not be higher than 5. so it functions like AP1, but it never causes explosions. I thought it was a DE weapon, but I got nothing. also this bread needs more eldar titanic stuff.
>>
>>98766661
Oh wait I see Rico is already mentioned in your lore. Added his datasheet
>>
>>98766648
Much weaker launch and just not as popular a setting. It has some great stuff like the sea-elves, but it's also got a lot of unintersting stuff and already has factions that feel more forgotten than just about anything in 40k. 40k has been in an explosion of popularity for a while now so it's better to focus more on it.

Those digits. Hail penta-satan.

Hey everyone, collageanon here.
Here is the september collage. The theme was "retro". Some nice old models and some classic takes on a few more recent ones. Well done all of you.
Energy/plasma weapons won the vote. That means for this month anything using a ranged weapon that glows is fair game. Alternatively if that's not your speed you could paint something in the seasonal theme, halloween/spooky. Or you could combine both if you'd like.
Feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions.
Thanks for participating!
Until next time!

The new Legion of the Damned box bringing in more realistically proportioned pre-Mark X armour was one step forward but right along with two steps back taken with the binning of all the Rhino chassis vehicles and boxnought.
Also while they have broken the seal on larger old armour that doesn't fix the 9 years of damage they've done to the backstory of the universe.

So it would need a little tweaking but:

Start of the turn - Strategy phase, both players roll a D6 and add their army Strategy rating, highest total gets to pick if they go first or second.

Action phase - The player going first picks 1 unit and gives them an action:
Advance - Move once and shoot
Engage - charge and fight an assault
Double - Move twice, shoot with -1 penalty
March - Move 3 times
..etc...
Action roll - roll a d6 get equal or over the units initiative to carry out the action (this would need to be changed to under the units initiative for 40k where higher stat is better), if failed you can only Hold - move once, or shoot once.

If the first unit passed it's action role then after doing it's action you may pick a second unit and do the same again but with -1 to the action roll. You can't activate a third unit even if this second unit passes its test.

Then it is the other players turn to activate a unit.

Orks were OP and became a shooting army, only now being nerfed into merely a top tier army. They do have internal balance problems but it's a very strong book.

Marines got their most of their bottom tier weapons pushed to S5, and half their infantry went up 1 toughness. It's not half the "crazy army-wide retool" custodes are getting. It's nice that GW adjusted every marine faction at the same time, but they honestly didn't have to. The book has great internal balance and might end up being good, losing Oath means marine players have to build armies intelligently now with enough dedicated anti-tank, and most will probably fail that hurdle as they insist on gimmicky chapter builds.
>>
Marine points went down to the previewed numbers wtf?

>>98766843

How many were there before? Phobos shooting got a lot stronger with AP-1 but they also stayed T4 in an increasingly S5 world. The repex getting AP-1 on its defensive array can be nasty but that also went up in points and lost its anti-fly 2+ guns (which I enjoyed).

GW probably have gone a bit overboard on AP given the cover changes.

The answer is that the 40k playerbase is cucked. The entire community is cucked.
>"play older editions!"
yeah, lots of people advocated that, but nobody actually did it. how many people have you seen in your LGS playing 4th, 3rd, hell, even 2nd edition? probably zero. new thing shiny, new thing good, old thing bad. that is the law of this game's playerbase
>well we'll just play other wargames! we're boycotting 40k!
that has never worked because a few players "leave" for...about a week? sometimes two? and then they come back to 40k. because they're cucked.
>well, I will individually leave 40k, it's not even a boycott, I like other games more!
and how many games has that netted you? and if it does still net you games of these "other wargames," will you actually stop the pigs from eating their slop? no. it's all pointless, you see, until the cuck problem is overcome, which it won't be. because you're cucks.

Marines players will always say they’re bottom tier because in the tournament W/L records they have the advantage of so many newbies dragging their rates down. Last edition someone removed the bottom 25% ELO from each faction and marines were consistently near or above 50%.
>>
>EC can’t reinforce their terminators
Guess that means they might be getting a refresh this edition?
>>
>>98767156
This is the main issue with the new marines.
Their skirmishing units in ~80-100 pts range are like 10 times more efficient per point than xenos stuff in general. They can put 5 random idiots on the center and you need to expose you actual valuable unit to deal with them. Shit like Striking Scorpions does literally nothing into them now.

my biggest quesiton would be what core design elements would you have stay? Alternating is the current highwave which ofc has its own downsides (activation tracking being an example), starting player initiative to feel "fair" etc. and I am still partial to it over 2k blob of I go You go.
Then are the dice - d6 is pretty classic but then you have shit like str/toughness spread getting wacko.
What I think should return is Armor Values in some form - just cuz you can reroll forever to fish enough 5/6s in 100 attacks doesn't mean that my supposedly hyper armored vehicle gets cut like warm butter, bring actual AV weapons
Removal of +1/-1 to hit/wound - no more double dipping, especially for wounds which adds up to the above.

5 JPI
5 Incursors

My list went up 150 but I've not really changed anything, can just drop some redundant characters. Yesterday's points were about 200, which felt closer to right. You can easily build a list that didn't go up much at all if you avoid terminators and use more vehicles and characters.

The guys who write the warhammer community articles aren't on the rules team or itk ahead of time, you should never trust what they say.

Yeah! This is why 40k is a TRVE WARGAME that SIMULATES REAL WARFARE IN THE 41ST MILLENNIUM! Just like in real life, conflicts are determined by how many goypoints you score by gyrating in a Special Goyim Zone for as long as possible, just like Call of Duty! Way better than those shitty "historical" games where the winner is determined by "scenario objectives" and "retreats" and shit.

Honestly the designs feel a bit lazy. Like, they are fine for the most part, but some of details feel off.
It just looks like they took the base male eldar model and added breasts to it.
They could've at least widened the hips a bit more and maybe give a bit more bust.
Also is it just me but do their shins and arms feel a bit short for some reason?
If it was me I'd make their arms like 1 palm longer and then extend the shins specifically by the same amount.
>>

Talos/Cronos used to be Toughness 7, which was as tough as a Great Unclean One and tougher than every Nid bioform
Dark Lances use to just flat out ignore higher tiers of armour
Drazhar and Malys used to have Weapon Skill 7 which was beyond Chapter Masters and Drazhar could literally dark souls parry + riposte units in close combat
Lelith used to be so high WS than basic marines couldn't hit her outside of a 6 and the literally most elite a marine could get (Kaldor Draigo during PEAK Grey Knight Wankery 5th edition) had WS7 and hit Lelith on a 5.

IDK what that is if not elite

>>
>>98767747
there's a 90% chance your army colors are purple because the only people who take pride in "their" army colors are snowflakes who pick terrible colors as a deliberate display of snowflakehood.

Usually it's purple because purple is thematically jarring for most factions, which is why it rarely gets used in official paintjob, which in turn prompts snowflakes to pick it.
>>
>>98767760
No I mean they don't have the right blues and red and stuff.

My base color is NL blue with Kantor blue dry brushed over and I don't know if the new blues match either of those
>>
>>98767727
This, a lot of people hate 40k because they believe that 40k is the primary factor not allowing them to get in more games of their preferred wargame, and 40k isn't even remotely good ruleswise and hasn't been for decades. So it builds up a lot of resentment in other wargaming fanbases, particularly for wargames that are scifi/fantasy since historicals have their own niche that isn't really as affected by 40k's popularity compared to scifi/fantasy stuff

The best way to deal with gaps is seam welding during assembly (put the pieces close together and put excess cement in and press the pieces together tight for little while so the cement squeezes out the top and then sand it down a while later after it's set, but also be careful not to put too much and let it get everywhere and damage detail). But also some GW kits, particularly vehicles, have such bad gaps and bad parts fit you have no choice but to putty them.

I genuinely like the Invictor suit, I just wish Phobos marines didn't look so weird to go alongside it
Phobos could be saved by just reducing the frequency of the ridging on the black undersuit and thickening up the calves (and giving them beakies)

I also really liked the old "leave my little brother alone" game rule, but that's gone
Everything becoming "you can reroll hit/wound rolls" is so fucking boring

I don't even mean to change much
Just like a 20-30%-ish diameter increase on the shins so it's less of a step between foot/knee and calves, and like a 15-25% decrease in frequency of the ridges on the suits. Just something to make the overall design have less "noise," which then makes the whole thing look less greebled.
Most of the complaints about Phobos are that they look tacticool and overly greebled (or that the legs are too thin). Taking a slight step back on the severity of those two things would do a lot to fix that without abandoning the design entirely. They'd still be lighter and more greebled, the difference would just be lesser than it now between an Intercessor and an Infiltrator.

I do think I'll start a Phobos heavy list though just to try out, I've talked myself into it over this conversation.

There are very few Eldar that live that long. There's only like five named Eldar that old. Most of them are only a few centuries old.

ymmv but I don't think the shins look that thin if you paint the leg armour as if it's two distinct layers (which it literally is). like half the poses do have that ugly GW bow-legged squat going on, though, made worse by not having the flat classic marine shinguard covering up. so they can end up looking like deformed eldar.

my new list has 9 eliminators and at least 20 incursors, plus some characters. a lot of new phobos to paint.

People bitch about rules updates constantly. They constantly yearn for older rulesets. They bitch about the edition cycle. Yet they still buy into it. They still play what's current. And if you ask these people why they won't just play older editions with their local hobby group, you'll just get
>"I can't, anon. I wouldn't have anyone to play with"
This seems bizarre, because they already have a group of people they're playing with. Surely they can just tell them "I don't like the current edition, we should switch to this older one instead." But they don't. Because they know they'll be told "no." And then everyone goes back to bitching anyway. Is the playerbase just broken at this point? We just sit there and take it, and build this false prison for ourselves while GW fucks us in the ass over and over and over again. Is the entire playerbase composed of submissive bottoms?

>not insignificant amount of GW's income comes from kids "dropping into a store, buying a kit and paints, and playing with what they have"
I can understand a portion of GW's income coming from this demographic, but kids do not have disposable income to regularly buy new kits and keep up with army lists changing. Even if parents are involved, I doubt they buy as often or as much as an adult with adult money does in the hobby. It is sort of like Lego, where the main income is from adults nowadays, since nobody else can really afford Lego, and even if you could, the prices are getting too high to justify.

My main argument is that this "prude" mindset from GW is rather outdated; it is simply not in the current paradigm of media and marketing. Even Bl*zzard is making gooner-bait skins in Overwatch again. GW is out of touch and out of date with their mindset.

I paint my models on the base, then I base them by gluing shit to the base (sandbags, skulls, helmets, cut up sprue to look like bricks, etc), then my texture and then any foliage. I very rarely paint my ballast/sand, the natural color is perfect for what I want most of the time. You just have to work around the model's feet.

I finish my bases by just running around the edge with whatever color looks the part, usually black because color-matching to my backyard is very difficult.

>>98766452
I made my own rules aswell with friends, with custom core rules and codices.

So for us players take turns going phase by phase, so in the movement phase player 1 goes then player 2 then you go to the shooting phase etc. We have a return fire mechanic so units dont get completely wiped without being able to shoot.
>For charging you charge either at the end of the movement or at the start of the fight phase. All units have an initative stat that determines who fights first and charging units always fight first going by initative if both players have units that charged before moving to non charging units.
Vehicle facings also add or remove toughness based on where your aimed at and are generally immune to small arms. fighting in melee targets a vehicles rear armor except for dreadnoughts that use their front armor and everytime a vehicle fails a save you roll on a vehicle damage chart that adds bonus damage or a bonus effect.
>Explosives and Flamers can also opt to shoot using a template or just rolling a D6 and also do so when shooting overwatch and other snap shots.

The rules are a big WIP tho and we keep hitting balance snags but its fun

Nah but these are rare outliers and I have seen them such as a parent buying their 15 year old a great unclean one. But parents will maybe buy a couple of kits and maybe for a birthday a big kit a year at most.

But that fucking pales in comparison to college aged kids working part time jobs with disposable income and casually dropping $100s of dollars with credit cards and reckless abandon because they've yet to graduate and dont need to save yet because their parents pay for their dorm room or they live at home. Theres also 30+ neckbears who buy an insane amount of shit like they'll randomly buy an entire army 1 year because they feel like it. I saw a guard dude with I shit you not atleast 2k individual guardsmen all from GW.

>MFW seeing that
Remember when Mantic announces Kings of War third edition and GW announced square bases were coming back?
Now Space King had good success and GW put out a silly cartoon
This proves that GW pays attention to the little competition.
I think GW knows they're on top but their corporate mentality is that they are paranoid of losing their number one spot so they pay attention to the little ones.

Still this is not how to respond. This is bad. It has corporate "how do you do fellow kids" all over it and modern big corpo culture dictates that edgy jokes against mainstream values is verboten so the magic isn't there.

The only good thing this has is that it emulates the early Flash animation styles somewhat.
>>
>>98769271
I will be awaiting GW bringing back Warhammer Historical since Warlord Games are doing pretty well right now.

>>
>>98769207
>>98769145
If you're running him as a LoC it should be the same base size
Legends sheets are fun and most people don't mind but their point cost is wildly inconsistant at the moment.
For instance AETAOS'RAU'KERES is currently cheaper than a Lord of Change despite having a better sheet.

its strats and enhancements are pretty bad compared to all the other infantry ones, and the vehicles detachments besides gauntlet are strong. only use it if you have nothing else in your army worth buffing. but in a scenario where you've spammed tacticus only firestorm is probably better.

>points costs on units for their efficacy vs. other armies (namely marines)
>skewed unit meta that includes very few of the "archetypal guard units"
>play experience often boils down to "somehow win on points while my entire gameplay is just lifting models off the table for 5 turns"
>tank spam (one of our good lists right now) is very expensive monetarily
>have to try far more vs. other armies to get a comparable outcome
Among others, these are just the ones that come to mind quickly for me

Is there any lore about how primaris grayshields handled their mutations and stuff? Like when sons of sanguinius started going crazy or sons of russ started turning into wolves, did they have a few firstborn marines from the same lineage to kind of guide them or were they just completely blindsided? Or did it just take longer to show up? I remember there were some blurbs about chapters with serious flaws hoping that primaris would fix it, and thinking that it maybe had for a while before finding out that it hadn't. So did is that the excuse?
>>
>>98769790
the mutations didn't show up until they joined their chapters

>>
>>98769579
Well, the reroll advance is good I guess. Everything else is meh
>>
>>98769746

Its not about tourney stats it's just that the army feels unfun to play in general because Guard doesn't have the rules and data sheets to play 11th. Changes to cover hurt them offensively, while it's a bit of a wash defensively. Melee armies are good this edition, it's harder to screen with overrun being a thing, and transport explosions really hurt 1w models.
Guard infantry suck for the points. Guard infantry are mostly a liability and taking an all tanks list is firstly expensive for your average player and second is unfun in its own way with so much S12+ melee around, or the other player just not having any antitank. Their infantry needs to be cheaper or be better because the new blast+cleave profiles also now just dumpster them (and every other T3 army).
>>
>>98769807
Honestly, I don't really think encarmine speartip does suck. I like all their strats, adds a mortal wound bomb option, keeps my expensive flying terminators safe, and being able to abuse lance every single turn without any other investment needed. The enhancement that can give jump captain with thunder hammer access to D4 can also be nice
>>
>>98769790
First generation freeze-dried primaris were completely free of tainted seed because Cawl fixed them, it's only the subsequent generations and rubiconians that have mutations.
>>
>>98769798

>>

>>98769746
>>98769814
The solution is to proxy a GSC army.
>>
>>98769821

Crawl specifically did not fix any mutations because he considered them features and not bugs as other attempts to remove them have led to disastrous outcomes. The first gen of Primaris just had fresh geneseed that was stable, and even then things still broke. Many geneseed lines are unstable by nature so after a generation or two those mutations appear again.
>>
>>98769826
Not exactly, GW put both more and less thought into it. Originally primaris were "cured of their mutations by Cawl's modifications" kind of like what >>98769821 said but less shitposty. But then when that massive lore change wasn't received too well, GW backtracked and said
>w-well ACKshully no they weren't, they just took longer to show up or something just shut up and take your wolfen and death company back I don't care anymore
>>
>>98769831

Ironically resurgence mechanics repackaged as "reinformemts" for guard would go a long way in making their infantry better.

Legends is an old folks retirement home for models before they "die" and are never mentioned again. When a model goes to legends it means they're on a time limit of "official support" before they are taken out.

beast men aren’t cultists
there is 0 chance that a cult has access to daemon engines and even LESS chance that one of them managed to become a daemon prince

I don't understand the question, thick paint makes it harder to get a point not easier
They're probably using well cared for natural brushes that get cleaned and shampoo'd after every session compared to the synthetic shit that gets a rough clean that the average newfag uses
remember that a real brush is real hair and can (should) be treated the exact same as your hair, with hair soap and shaping as it dries so it naturally wants to go into a point rather than splaying
>>
>>98770181
Well it is true that there is diminishing returns to this type of stuff, but there often is a bare minimum equipment quality at which you can really do things properly. For example, is natural hair really better than synthetic?
>>
>>98770171
you get painters with brushes? lucky. all the painters I get on my fyp seem to use airbrushes exclusively. I do not own one.
>>
>>98770171
Maybe for super fine details, having a special brush might help, but it's also probably just good control on their part
>>
>>98770194
>I don't understand the question, thick paint makes it harder to get a point not easier
Well to get it to a point sure, but in theory it will stick the bristles together more to stay in shape

Is the shampoo thing really that big of a game changer? I've seen it done but figured it was just one of those extra, +5% benefit type of things rather than a necessary step. Also, yeah, I'm not really sure if my brushes are natural and synthetic, though I do make sure to get them back into a point before putting them away

>>
>>98770218
cultists don’t have to just be infantry anon, they can be in vehicles or on bikes. We saw this in the secret level episode but have yet to have it on the tabletop.
luckily, GSC has exactly what I want.
>>
>>98770146
That art piece and the new space marine codex cover looks just fine.
>>
>>98770214
Paint that's sticky enough to hold bristles together is too sticky to brush on smoothly
It helps to think of your paintbrush as if you were literally using some of your own hair, if you wet your hair you can form a point with a load of strands easily and you can't really if it's dry
If you really wanna you can try forming your own hair into a brushpoint and let it dry like that to see how it works
It definitely changes things, once I started cleaning my brushes with shampoo (actually brush soap because I'm retarded and easily parted from my money), then rinsing, then forming a point with some soap and letting it dry like that, I've had a nice point waiting for me and an easier time getting it into a point
>>
>>98770232

Natural hair tapers to a point because of how it's made
Synthetics are just extruded tubes that get snipped, they tend to be jagged at the tip even when new and only get worse from there, which means the point of your brush can only get so pointy and quickly degrades
>>
>>98770255
Yeah, Kolinsky sable brushes do have a finer point than synthetic-haired ones, but if you're putting so much pressure on the brush to make it splay a weasel-haired brush isn't going to do you any good.
>>
>>98770262
ironically a patriarch is one of the few GSC models I can’t see myself using for this idea. Still, happy to join broodbro.
>>
>>98770171
A few things.
As you paint with the brush the point of it flattens out, think of it like a scalpel going to a chisel. Pro painters rotate their brushes every few strokes to maintain that scalpel angel, doing this a lot maintains the point of all the bristles in general.
Don’t twist the bristles to a point, this messes them up, do the brush rotation thing I mentioned.
Never get paint beyond halfway up the bristles, and never ever get it in the ferrule. Avoid getting water in the ferrule too, when you wash your brush in your cup, just wet it up a little higher than you’ve been getting paint on it.
Once you wash the brush wick off most of the moisture into a towel, and then test it on your hand, you want enough water to glisten on your hand, to see that it’s wet, but not enough to bead up into a droplet and roll down your hand. Having your bristles damp like this will prevent paint from climbing up to the ferrule.

Lastly, use a bigger brush, I do very fine detail work with a number 4 a lot of the time, because I can maintain a better tip on it, since all the brush care I mentioned just works better on a number 4.

>>
>>98770285
Also either get some brush oil, or a brush soap with conditioner. It’s like your hair, using brush soap is like using a harsh shampoo, you need to help the bristles stay soft after you wash them with conditioner or oil, then you just wash that out in your cup before you paint next.

So that whole bit of advice is just misinformation?

Honestly, now looking at all of the factors together, I might need a new brush. I did let some paint dry in the belly of this one, and though I did manage to get all of the visible bits out by weakening them with isopropyl, it is struggling to hold a point. It can hold one just as well as a generic synethetic, but neither of them seem to naturally want to go back into a point the way I see with other people's brushes. I'll dry using shampoo to shape it after today's painting like you guys advised. If there is no improvement, I'll just have to pick up a new one

Actually I'm just checking it and apparently you have three options for your basic infantry,
Sentinel Sodality with Swords & Shields, unit of 3 models
Custodian Guard Sodality with Guardian Spears, 3 models
Custodian Wardens with either Guardian Spears or Axes, 2 or 3 models.
Wardens and Guard seem interchangeable with each other if they have spears, you can just build 3 guys with shields and the rest with spears so you can have them in a combination of 3-2-2 for 7 models and so on. Just check the sprues

I'm trying to still make it "feel like 40k", so big changes like changing the dice or moving to alternate activations are out. If every other games uses AA, then 40k not doing that becomes part of its identity.

I have thought about bringing back old vehicle rules, right now I've just got them as high T multi wound units (while reducing almost everything else bar characters & monsters to 1W) but I might put out a poll to decide which way to go. I already planned to poll for template weapons as those are also something I'm on the fence for.

As far as wound fishing, I have a partial solution to that in the would chart making high T units immune to small arms fire. S4 cannot wound T10, and S3 cannot wound T9, so most tanks will be notably harder to fish wounds from. Though bolters into Chimera might be an issue.

My main issue is wanting to reduce friction points in the rules, and vehicle facing introduces a potential point of friction.
+1/-1 is something I'm planning on keeping. Though not as ubiquitous as in current 40k.
