In 2026 is there any actual reason for clerics and paladins to be different classes?

Clerics don't have to be Lawful Stupid?

Paladins are just idealized Crusaders from the middle ages mixed with Arthurian.
At least, in AD&D they were.
>>
>>98772817
If clerics were confined to the role they had as strictly buffers and healers then yes but now that they can do more different roles and do more martial stuff, there's less of a difference

Hey grandpa? It's time for your pills, okay?

Not anymore really. Older players hated being non-violent healers, so Clerics wear armor, swing weapons, and cast whatever they want. They basically do everything Paladins do except sometimes get a bonus to riding horses.
>>
>>98772817

Personally, I think Cleric works best as a martial/divine caster hybrid, and thus think Cleric and Paladin is redundant.

Thus, I would prefer if more systems would either keep the class as a fighter/divine caster hybrid or else split it off into a frontline Paladin class and a backline Priest class and lean into the archtypes.

This 5e "no, I'm the *other* kind of holy plate user that uses bonus action spells to enhance a melee-based strategy" serves no one.

I like it

4e D&D did this.

So many good classless games out there, and you idiots are still playing D&D

Anyway (full caster) bards, wizards, sorcerers and warlocks being separate classes is also stupid.

because that doesn't work

They all play different though.

It’s so easy if you just make sure the multiclassing works.

So did Pathfinder 2e.

>>98772817
>In 2026 is there any actual reason for clerics and paladins to be different classes?
Yes. The Cleric is a full caster with limited combat capabilities, while the Paladin is a martial with limited casting capabilities.
Additionally, they have completely separate lore and mechanics. Please stop being stupid and only considering the most superficial of elements between the classes. Consider the whole of the class and not just the fact both are divine, have combat capabilites, and can cast spells.

>>98773066
>I think Cleric works best as a martial/divine caster hybrid
No. The cleric should be a full casting priest type and not a hybrid martial. D&D is saddled with some remarkably stupid sacred cows because of Gygax's idiocy in class design. 3e really should have removed armor and weapon training from the cleric and made the new core paladin class the only divine martial.

>>98785243
>>98785923
These are very different caster classes with very different mechanics outside of the basic spell mechanics. Please stop being a retard who only thinks of the most superficial elements of these classes. I swear the people who want so many classes combined are literal midwits or even lackwits unable to remember the many mechanics and lore that separate these classes. Not to mention the subclasses and other things.

>3e really should have removed armor and weapon training from the cleric and made the new core paladin class the only divine martial.

Wow, it's almost like you think the Cleric should be split up into a back line caster and a front line martial but have decided to piss your pants over the possibility that the back line caster might have been called a "priest" and not a "cleric" you absolute dumbfuck.
>>
>>98786023
yeah they are so different on a deep level. you have the choice of casting your aoe spell of choice and then spam your cantrip of choice
>>
>>98786039
You're really pissy about the fact people think your idea of calling the paladin a cleric and making the cleric into an unarmored priest class is retarded. I get it, you think youve solved the problem and want your ego stroked, but its stupid and retarded.

We have two already good classes that bridge the martial-caster duo, Cleric and Paladin. You keep the cleric as is and simply remove the armor and weapon training. Simplest fix, least change of mechanics. Paladin stays the same, as it doesnt need any fixes. Voila, the quickest and simplest fix for D&D that immediately strongly differentiates even more between cleric and paladin. For war gods and other more martial types you simply add limited weapon and armor training to the domain rules.

It is quite simply the cleanest, easiest, and best fix.

Yours, on the other hand, is retarded. There is no need to split it into two classes. There is no need to have a cleric, priest, and paladin. Paladin already sits at the hybrid caster/martial spot. This supposed hybrid caster/martial cleric would need to have its caster levels reduced to fit into the design space of caster/caster-martial/martial. This would step into the paladin class's design space. Thus, this would also necessitate a redesign of the paladin to remove or lessen some of its caster elements to fit it into the martial spot better. Youve introduced a lot of work where none is needed.
>>
>>98786136
Again, you have referred to the basic spell mechanics shared between all caster classes without referencing any of the various class-specific mechanics. Again, stop being retarded and thinking that you've noticed some big reason they should be combined, and not the basic and easy to understand universal casting system for D&D that is shared between literally all classes that can cast a spell, including the martial ones.

What of those classes, besides their spells, makes them similar and thus should be combined? Do you actually know or are you just a retarded nogames that thinks there aren't any?
>>
>>98786169
>why yes i will choose fey touched and cast silvery barbs how could you tell
i just think the difference between caster classes is way overstated when all those features run out after casting them once and then they all fall back to casting their favourite concentration spell, which might incidentally also be the favourite concentration spell of all the other casters that have access to it and then cast their favourite cantrip which has the very same issue
>>
>>98786241
>i just think the difference between caster classes is way overstated
It isnt. Those mechanics differentiate the classes in ways that cannot be solved when you mush all the classes together. It is also fucking boring to have one single caster class. Lore and mechanics matter. Having multiple different caster classes is much more interesting than a single one. Having choices is better than appealing to midwits who can't understand or remember all the differences between classes.

Besides all of that, each class approaches their spellcasting in different ways that make them different classes. A wizard needs a spellbook and prepares their spells from it in a way that's different from sorcerers and their spontaneous spells, which is different from warlocks Pact magic, and so on. You've looked at the spells and only the spells and think they should all be the same class because you are retarded or a secondary who has never played the game.

and different builds of the same class can also play different

>>98786023
>who want so many classes combined
The way they are separated is fucking stupid and forces a super specific type of setting.
Just look at how "wizard" (literally a word derived from "wisdom"), "sorcerer" and "warlock" are made into different things when those words were more often used as synonyms. Hell, iconic "wizards" like Gandalf or Merlin even fit the lore for classes like Bard or Druid better.
Separating gameplay and mechanical options is good, but how the lore and terms are handled fucking sucks.
>>
>>98789079
>are made into different things when those words were more often used as synonyms
Its almost like magic doesn't exist in our world and thus any term for a type of magic man or spellcaster is basically interchangeable, while in these worlds where magic actually exists, there are terms for them that differentiate how they come by their magic and spellcasting and thus are not interchangeable. Please engage your brain and think.

Also, etymology will only get you so far in understanding a word. Its present use outweighs any origins and their meanings. Even then, "a wise man" (a wiz ard) was a knowledgeable person who was smart and who understood the ways the world worked. Simply, in the way D&D works, they were intelligent, and maybe had a bit of wisdom, but definitely had lots of ranks in Knowledge skills.

>The way they are separated is fucking stupid
It really isnt. It pulls on historical, folkloric, and mythological stories of magic users and spellcasters. It may come as a surprise, but most humans werent that creative when it came to telling their stories back then.
>and forces a super specific type of setting.
Not really. If you aren't that creative or are lacking in simple game design knowledge, then maybe, but for most people it is trivially easy to make these classes, or none of them, work for their settings.
