They are annoying and retarded and gross, don’t let your players have a monopoly on that the so called 5E triad. Make them compete with goblins to be the shittiest creatures in your setting

It might be worth asking here since you're the experts, but what's a good campaign to run for 5.5? I'm running it for coworkers and although they have fun, it's for sure more of a beer and pretzels game.

I pitched some of the heavy hitters like Curse of Strahd or Odyssey of the Dragonlords and they're not interested. They wanna kill things and be cool; but I'm more used to DMing for loooong form campaign (like I mentioned and some plot heavy original ones).

I don't wanna make it a succession of combat scenes so some plot is good but... Yeah. Nothin
>>
How much of 5e's identity is tied to rolling to hit? I was playing Nimble a little bit ago and I really liked not having to worry about rolling to hit. You just roll your damage die and on a one you miss, and on a max result you roll another. I know rolling to hit is kind of iconic to D&D but is it really necessary?

These are 40k players thoughbeit
>>
>>98787006
Run a short dungeon for them like Bad Apples. It'll let you know if it's a good fit in terms of the games you and the players want. I recommend level 3 as a starting point especially with 5.5e.
>>
>>98787006
Go for something like a Monster of the Week kind of game.
Now don't go for adventurers' guild. they want to look cool and kick ass? Monster Hunters' Guild.
>Dinosaurs
>Werewolves
>Bulettes
>Trolls
>Ogres
The works my guy. they want to fight cool stuff and look good doing it? You should incentivise your players to describe their actions when they attack a monster and give them incentives for doing so, like appropriate outcomes for the action s they describe.
If a player is looking to grapple an Owlbear, ask him how he wants to do it in particular and give them something extra to go with the particulars of the action.

I'd like to pick you guys' brains a little bit regarding the next arc of my on-going campaign.

The PCs are going on an expedition into the deep-ass, extremely dangerous Bayou to look for a long forgotten artifact (the spear of an old Emperor). I would like some ideas on how to run the expedition so that it would actually be interesting and support player choice. My best idea so far was some kind of narratively-enhanced hexcrawl (where going into certain places would get the players involved with sub-storylines, like encountering a village of completely uncivilized elves, or coming into a tense cohabitation with a rival expedition).

The change I've already implemented is changing night rests to short rests, and making long rests require good shelter (like a garrison or a town) and 24 hours of rest. I feel like that could make even small non-combat encounters have some consequence.

Any ideas bros?
>>
Bros the party artificer (a shaved bugbear from thay who managed to escape) was flirting with my character's mother figure/mentor (he's a dragonborn redemption paladin of bahamut, his mentor figure is a war cleric because I like narrative contrast and what not) they're both like late 30s/40s and my character is basically the dragonborn equivalent of a 20 year old.

Also the druid is a retard and got sprayed by a skunk for throwing a rock at it in the sewers.

Did they add any subclasses that do something with Constitution in 5.5? I wish they would do something interesting with that stat, you can build being a cool warrior using a variety of weapons with either strength or dexterity, or be a cool caster with the other stats, but constitution usually just means you can have more bad rolls and keep standing there. Maybe they could add a monk archetype that can breathe various elements or poisons and tie that to your constitution bonus.
>>
>>98793669
I doubt it. Every time previous editions let you use Con for anything other than not-dying, it became the best stat by default
>>
>>98793678
Same problem as dexterity and wisdom I guess, they're tied to something important if boring out of the gate so trying to do something interesting with them makes them too good.
>>
>>98792758
Depending on what spells/equipment the PCs have access to, some additional resource drains could be environmental in nature. Risks of diseases, parasites, insects, spoiled food. Maybe a random "encounter" table with these tings, skill checks or player ingenuity encouraged to work through those issues.
PCs getting dragged into the middle of, and/or inadvertently starting, a tribal conflict is usually fun as well.
Also, will o wisps. Maybe the lights often found in the bayou have a distinct shade purely because these buggers are always trying to lure people to their deaths.
>>
>>98793669
Would be neat, I still have fond memories of my CON SAD fighter, even if he was terrible.
Although I would hesitate to make a Monk the base with how MAD they are already, even if flavourwise it makes sense.

>Maybe they could add a monk archetype that can breathe various elements or poisons and tie that to your constitution bonus.

Figured you people would be numb to this shit by now. As far as all the lame ass official D&D crossovers we've had over the years this probably doesn't even reach into the top 5.
Besides, I'm sure a lot of Tiefling players are going to be happy they get to play actual Draenei instead of bootleg Draenei after all these years.
>>
>>98796632
>Figured you people would be numb to this shit by now.
Genuinely nobody gives a fuck about Warcraft anymore, this collab could've moved fucking continents in the past but nowadays Blizzard is as widely despised as EA and WoW jumped headfirst off a cliff so they're 15 years to late.
Also, as you said, DnD itself is whoring itself out to any brand it can like a Puerto Rican prostitute nowadays so that further deminishes any excitement the collab might've had.

I don't hate War Domain personally, I just think its kinda mid as a full class.
>Spells
Half of these are already Cleric spells and the half that aren't only really have Steel Wind Strike and Hold Monster as standouts imo. These aren't bad spells its just okay.
>War Priest
This mechanic is better on a multiclassed Rogue than a pure Cleric. You have to invest in both WIS and STR or DEX to be able to really get any consistent use out of this. If you have a ton of bonus action uses or if you're using Light weapons then I just don't see you using this much or worst case, you use it and miss because your STR/DEX isn't all that high. Still its not a bad feature, especially since you can just do it as BA instead of setting up something as a part of an Action, its just not the best. I'm not big on new Spiritual Weapon due to concentration, but that spell generally seems like a better use of BA than this.
>Guided Strike
+10 Basically means you turn a miss into a hit if it's not a natural 1. The reaction cost to use it on an ally is expensive if its even worth using then (You could be casting Shield via Magic Initiate). You basically would use this only to boost a missed high damage attack roll, which is usually spells. You may use it on yourself if you are making an attack with Guiding Bolt or one of your Steel Wind Strike attacks? Eh..
>War God's Blessing
Actually good! Concentrationless Shield of Faith is good. Spiritual Weapon concentrationless would be good like 3 levels ago, right now its kinda not good, but its probably better than War Priest for a pure Cleric. Remember the Spiritual Weapon cast with this feature is always cast at level 2, you cannot upcast it.
>Avatar of Battle
Great...assuming you're fighting creatures that deal BPS damage at level 17.

I'd rather play a Cleric that gets better survivability or can grant allies more attacks than this. Spirit Guardian + True Strike should do it for any Cleric.

Not really. They aren't an innately holy race, they just look demonic because they were retconned into being the racial origin of one of the notable demon races.

is it normal for people to adapt the same character over and over again regardless of setting? im toying with a secondary campaign just to build out my main game a bit and half of the players are just retrofitting their existing evergreen pc's to work within the game. they're just friends of friends so i dont have to deal with this in my core group thankfully, but i cant help but see this new cast as a sort of bad omen for things to come. perhaps its just an ego injury because of how theyve mostly been ignoring all the fun new campaign-specific toys to play with, but i still just dont know how i feel about it. i for one would never be caught dead reusing characters 1:1
>>
>>98798576
>is it normal for people to adapt the same character over and over again regardless of setting?
I've seen a few people do it. They were all terrible players. I tell people to make a character that fits the specific setting.
>>
>>98798576
I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker or anything but it’s definitely unusual to have half to table doing it.
>>
>>98798576
I've seen it in people whose roleplaying experiences started in MMOs, where having a "main" that you stick with over years is more of an expectation. Generally, after getting a few games under their belts, they'll start to explore a bit more.

I've also found that they'll generally be receptive to you engaging with the character adaptation process and pointing out the setting-specific toys that are relevant to their characters. I had one guy whose precious OC was a WoW high elf warrior that didn't fit at all into the setting we were playing in, but the actual underlying character was one we were able to adapt to a completely different race from a completely different culture just by talking about the character himself, what motivated him, and what kind of specific capabilities were core to his concept.
>>
So i never played Ranger before i kinda want to try Hollow Warden because of the dark theme of the subclass is Strenght ranger viable for this subclass? or i should just play the new emo fighter that dropped this month

i've made Roegadyn>Goliath and White Mage>Life Domain
>>
>>98798576
I've only seen one player across my various groups do similar. He said his character was one he's come up with previously, commissioned art for and played in a previous game that fizzled out early. I would personally always create a character for a game, but this guy's a good roleplayer and engages with the game normally.
>>
>>98798576
I've had players that want to play the same archetypes for sure, but not 1:1 and never everyone at once. Have you brought it up to them?
>>
>>98798576
>ego injury because of how theyve mostly been ignoring all the fun new campaign-specific toys to play with
Some of this can also just be an accessibility issue. they might not know where to start, or how to probe your setting for the information they want. It's why I think most drow players, even in homebrew, just default to matriarchy good - they have no idea about the intricacies of your Drow but The Drow are that way in the book, so it gets pasted over. It happens with other races too, obviosuly but the drow are the ones I think it's most obvious to see with.

Just ask them about it or present them with a little primer for setting specific information. No one likes homework but you could probably shove it in as a session zero / character creation fluff piece and keep them engaged with it.
>>
>>98799847
>is Strength ranger viable for [Hollow Warden]?
It's the only Ranger that makes it even an option without running even harder into your MAD issues.

the group I'm playing with still doesn't know many of the rules of DND after 3 years (on and off).I don't think some of the players are ready for anything more complex .
We did get a campaign going on DC20 but the devellopment of it so goddam slow we went back to dnd. I liked what I saw of DC20 back then so I'm a bit curious about how it evolved but when even the dedicated subreddit is criticizing the dev speed, it's not looking good
>>
>>98801102
Because it's the system we've been using for our campaign going on 5 years now. Why would we change it?

Well, I don't know anyone who's interested in OSR-style games, but none of the other systems we've tried have caused us to want to stop playing D&D.
Actually, we did try Shadowdark at a con once and that was enjoyable enough.
>>
>>98801102
Because I'm not the one running the campaign I'm playing in. I've never given money to WotC in my life and my party is otherwise undeterred by their efforts to make D&D as sterile as possible and rebrand it as the progressive gay nigger faggot retard rpg since the DM just picks and chooses what material he wants to use or otherwise makes his own.

Here are my favorites
>Valda's Spire of Secrets
Good list of new classes and 150 subclasses. Light in tone generally but fun.
>Monster manual expanded
Many variant options for monsters and like lieutenants etc for monstrous races.
>Tome of beats, creature codexes
More monster options, all very good
>Flee Mortals
The best of the alternative monster manuals, every monster feels unique and was clearly well playtested. They are usually rather complex though and take some thought as the DM.
>The Armorer’s Handbook: Equipment Upgrade and Rune Magic System
Gives an alternative option for magic items and equipment. Something for the party to sink their money into. Runes for weapons and armor are also pretty good.

I usually focus on DM facing tools which rarely care about edition. I choose either 5e or 5.5e monsters depending on what I like more. Some 5.5e monsters feel particularly shit compared to their old versions, like the basilisk. Given how many alternative monster manuals I use the players can't just google what they're fighting and know all their abilities and stats.
>>
>>98802548
Both. It's a fun gimmick, but that's pretty much all it is.

Because my biggest complaints about D&D as a system is its too low powered and it lacks mechanical rigor and OSR is that times ten. I enjoy OSR, for a particular experience, but its not my preference in RPGs. I usually don't play D&D at all, but when I do 5e functions and unlike 3.X doesn't make me want to punch a wall every time I have a PC do something I don't have a feat for.

I don't really agree that it can't do long form campaigns, I assume the gimmick is the torch timer which itself isn't exactly unique. How retarded would it be to be a Vestige Warlock going down Pact of the Blade? My idea is a Reborn Warlock being a soldier brought back by his past leader who now is his Vestige Lich or some shit and they fight together side by side
>>
>>98804167
Seems quite solid actually. You get access to a handful of Domains, so you can grab War and get Spirit Guardians going.
Aside from that, Cursed Invocation lets you make yourself more dodgy for a tough fight. And the Vestige can also pretty reliably just be sitting back and using your Bonus Action to dish out extra damage.

Overall Pact of the Blade is pretty improved with 2024, and from what I've seen Vestige is very solid as a Warlock subclass in general.

What do you guys think, should Detect Magic be able to sense Invisible creatures? I feel like Detect Magic already has great mileage in detecting stuff and tell you the school of magic, and it seems silly to me that a level 1 spell and totally negate a level 2 spell but I want to hear from you.

>>
>>98806293
>What do you guys think, should Detect Magic be able to sense Invisible creatures?
As the spell is written, it would allow you to sense something invisible, provided that source of invisibility was magic.
It wouldn't, however, let you pinpoint the invisible object. You can only see an aura around the source of magic if it's visible, and you otherwise just get a sense that something magic is within 30 feet of you.

I wouldn't classify it as much different than Detect Evil and Good clueing you in to the presence of a Poltergeist who was sitting invisibly in a room. Or Detect Poison being used to sense the Assassin hiding nearby with their poisoned weapons.
In all of these cases, the amount of information you glean via the level 1 spell is rather minimal. Especially since, if the PC is casting one of those spells, that means they're already suspicious about a potential danger.

The end result being that, if the PCs are paranoid about the right thing and cast the right spell, then at best they avoid being Surprised.

I've always felt Detect Magic is one of those things that should be built into magic using classes. If you fuck with magic why wouldn't you be able to sense it as a matter of course? You could then play around with different classes having unique ways of using and modifying that ability.

However, rather than simply uncover the magic, you get a good idea of it's general direction and flavor but I would go the extra step in that you can use your different sense to detect magic.

So yes, you could literally lick a magic item and try and figure out what kind of magic it has.

>What do you guys think, should Detect Magic be able to sense Invisible creatures?
Not anymore than it does, that is to say I would tell a player "There is a feeling of magic somewhere in the area, but it isn't in view to discern the class of magic nor exact location."
This could mean something's invisible nearby, or it could be something magical behind a false wall, or something is in a character's pocket they can't see. From there players can investigate and probe to find out more info in character through actions they do.

Detect Magic is useful enough that it doesn't need to invalidate a more specialist oriented spell that's a higher level than it.

Does Nystul's Magic Aura not give you the benefits of the chosen Creature type? If you had Construct as the chosen creature type then Hold Person wouldn't work on you or if you were an Ooze creature type then getting blinded by a spell wouldn't work
I used the spell on the Cleric and chose Fiend for him but the DM said lightning damage projected by a Demon wasn't going to be cut in half because the spell is referring to specific spells like Magic Circle, so I'm guessing choosing Fiend doesn't grant fire resistance?
What spells get countered by Magic's Aura because otherwise the spell doesn't have much function
>"You could use it to disguise yourselves"
The Demons immediately knew the Cleric was actually a Cleric because they smelled the godly stuff on him. The Cleric got his chest caved in and had to be revived immediately afterwards

>>
>>98809167
>so I'm guessing choosing Fiend doesn't grant fire resistance?
no, you don’t actually become the chosen type. it’s an illusion spell. you just appear to be that type to spells and magical effects that target certain types.
>The Demons immediately knew the Cleric was actually a Cleric because they smelled the godly stuff on him.
that’s a disappointing decision by the dm. that’s exactly what the spell is supposed to protect against.
>>
>>98809209
>you just appear to be that type to spells and magical effects that target certain types.
So I don't get damage resistance, okay that would be too much and hard to keep track of since Demons and Devils have their own unique things going on.
What about spells like Holding Person, so if I'm an Ooze and someone uses a spell that targets Humanoids, does the illusion do anything or is it just like with damage resistance?
I ask because I'm playing a Caster and want to try other spells other than the usual AoE spells. Been looking to give my crew some slight edge while my Summons play meat shield
>>
>>98809167
>The Demons immediately knew the Cleric was actually a Cleric because they smelled the godly stuff on him. The Cleric got his chest caved in and had to be revived immediately afterwards
If the Demons were using some type of magical effect or thing to make this happen, then that's a bad call. This should have blocked their ability to sense that the Cleric was not a demon. However- it looks like the demons were not able to detect the Cleric being a human but they did notice the objects on them. I'm curious if you could have used Magic Aura on the objects to False Aura them and make them appear as Necromantic items maybe fool them that way? Disguise Self + Magic Aura?
>>
>>98809220
They just sort of, figured it out? They noticed pretty quickly and went right after him
>>
>>98809219
>What about spells like Holding Person, so if I'm an Ooze and someone uses a spell that targets Humanoids, does the illusion do anything or is it just like with damage resistance?
Correct, it does protect you against Hold Person. Magic Aura specifically helps you avoid effects and targets from spells and magical abilities that specifiy your creature type:
If you are a Humanoid and are protected by a Magic Aura (Ooze) spell. You are untargetable by Hold Person, Charm Person, Dominate Person, and Reincarnation because these specify a Humanoid as the target, but you due to Magic Aura are viewed as an Ooze for the purposes of Spells and Magic Effects. This spell is also well known to have some *interesting* implications with certain spells. For example, if you cast Summon Dragon, then cast Magic Aura (Celestial) on the Dragon, that Dragon is now a legal target for stuff that targets Celestials specifically- like Planar Binding. Or if you made it Humanoid someone could target it with Magic Jar or Dominate Person.
>>98809225
Hm. Its worth pointing out that Magic Aura doesn't change you visually at all. You still look the same, you just pick up differently for magic/spells.
>>
Played 5.5e, played pf2e. The level ups in both of these systems suck. I kind of preferred pf2e's tight magic but the class and race feats are terrible there too and magic/ranged fucking sucks. I won't lie, pulling that specific combo off will require your Cleric to be 10 Levels into Cleric. Only because Planar Binding takes 1 Hour to cast normally which would break concentration on the Summon, but your Cleric buddy could use their Divine Intervention to instantly Action cast Planar Binding bypassing the 1 Hour Cast time to get themelves a Dragon for 24 Hours no concentration from anyone. If you ever get the Wish spell you can do that with Wish too, but even better cause with that you can instantly cast Planar Binding at 8th level! That's 180 Days of concentration less Dragon buddy. Then you can do it again the next day, and the next day, and the next day...

>The choices come in order,
Idk man, picking your class before your background seems ass backwards to me.
>>
>>98809366
for me too but many players choose a class/subclass they want to play and then decide to build their character around it. Even more so with 5.5e, the background becomes a mechanical choice
it. Just like the rest of DnD, the storytelling is put in the background in favor of combat
>>
>>98809375
I get knowing what class you want to play first, but from a mechanical perspective the first thing you establish and choose options for should be your race and background. Everything else builds on top of those choices
>>
What kind of retard picks a background before picking a class?
>5eg
Oh yeah
>>
>>98809436
that's true when you have a character concept that is a story, but many have a character concept that is a either a flavor or a mechanic; and race + background is secondary to the class in that aspect
I love doing the chronogical progression too but let's be real, most peoples are like "I want to play a revenge paladin, now I just need to find what happened that makes him want to take revenge"
>>
>>98809452
>>98809455
Again, has nothing to do with story. If X race and Y background provide a guaranteed feat, skill proficiency, or trait, then it makes more sense to start with those limited building blocks before going into things that have more varied options. You take care of the simple shit first before going into the more complex modular things.

A better solution would be to just move skills and feats into a completely separate tab from class/background/race that inherits the choices available from the previous selections. That way it bypasses issues like choosing your skill proficiencies from your class, finding a background with a feat you want, and having to backtrack to the class page to redo your skill choices because the ones you chose were the only choices available from that background that were relevant to your character/build/concept
>>

There's no such thing in 5e. Most demons resist Cold/Fire/Lightning while most Devils are immune to Fire, but that isn't all of the Fiends in the game. As of 2024, Gnolls are the easiest example.

The spell is incredibly niche in its applications.

So I have a session 1 starting tomorrow, and im kinda worried about the progression of the plot. Its a standard start, 3 player party meet in a tavern, shit happens and they will be compelled to investigate, which spirals into the main plot. My problem is that I want to plan ahead without railroading too much. They start in a tavern, cultists come in and try to kill and kidnap who they can, the party fights and stops them (or dies, 2 of the players are...not good, 3rd player is a DM himself and actually knows what hes doing.), town guards find and question them post-fight, Captain of the guard briefs them on ongoing cult activity, charges them with eradicating the cult, then....what? Do i just react solely to what the players do? How am I supposed to handle them taking action thats completely out of left field and not what I planned for?
>>
>>98813363
Well, ideally, one of the players being a DM will help to steer the party towards actually dealing with local problems.

That said, at a glance, it does feel a bit questionable.
>people who met for the first time ever sitting in a tavern
>cultists break in and start stabbing people
>town guard shows up too late to do anything
>tells the three randoms who were just attacked that it's their job to deal with the cult now
I could absolutely see a player deciding that the town guard was the most suspicious there. Perhaps agreeing to the captain's request to keep up pretenses, but then seeking to skip town since it seems like the cult and the guard are in cahoots.
The guards threatening to arrest them won't help if the cultists are kidnapping people.

My suggestion would instead by that the party has already been hired. Have them escorting some merchant or similar VIP, who has promised them the rest of their payment in the morning after they finish their delivery or secure the funds from whatever contact they came to the town to visit.
Then, have the merchant gone in the middle of the night, being kidnapped by cultists. If you still want to have a fight with cultists in the tavern, then you could have the innkeeper or one of the other guests/staff be in on the conspiracy, calling for reinforcements once it's clear that the PCs are going to investigate the merchant's room and try to solve his disappearance.

This immediately sets the PCs on the trail of the investigation with the promise of a reward, alongside a reason to work together. It also gives them some potential locals they can trust in the form of the merchant's contact.
From there, you have a town full of clues that should hopefully point them towards whatever dungeon the cultists hides out in. Though you don't want to be solely reactive, in the sense that that the cultists won't just sit in their dungeon never doing anything until prompted.

>Monk who has powerful fire powers.
What would you play to best match this vibe? Which is the most fun?
Ascendant Dragon Monk [Fire] and flavoring all features with a fire theme.
Four Elements Monk who exclusively uses Fire and flavors all features with a fire theme.
Mystic Arts Monk with Fire damage spells and everything flavored with fire themes.
>>
>>98813449
I'd personally go for Dragon. You're dealing Fire damage all the time with your punches, and you get proficiency bonus uses of your breath weapon for free. It's also done as part of your attack action, so it enables your bonus action punches and works with Extra Attack.

Elements has to wait for an AoE at level 6 and gives up attacking to do it, and otherwise doesn't feel very fiery when you're just pushing people around with your punches.

Mystic Arts has to wait until level 6 to reliably deal Fire damage as part of its regular attacks, and even then is reliant on Green-Flame Blade for it to really be better than just punching.
You are effectively a short rest caster once you hit level 6, but even then damaging Fire spells don't keep pace well with the levels you're getting access. Searing Smite would improve this greatly, but making the stats work for a Paladin multiclass is messy. Best spread I can find is 13/16/12/8/14/13.

All of which is to say, Dragon is definitely going to be the most reliably fun and consistent. Less worrying about multiclassing, ability scores, etc. and more tossing out a big wave of fire and then punching whoever is left standing with a burning fist.

I'd probably have the most amount of fun with a Mystic Arts option cause I like spells.
>Cantrips
Sorcerous Burst (Fire) or Fire Bolt
Blade Ward (Protective Will o Wisp)
Elementalism

>1st Level
Absorb Elements
Shield (Fire Barrier)
Jump (Fire Jets)
Burning Hands
Fog Cloud

>2nd Level
Misty Step (Fire Teleport)
Flaming Sphere
Blur or Mirror Image (Heat Mirages)
See Invisibility (Heat Sensing)
Hold Person (Flame Bindings)
Scorching Ray or Aganazzar's Scorcher

>3rd Level
Fireball
Fly (Continuous Fire Jets)
Fear or Hypnotic Pattern (Heat Hallucinations)
Ashardalon's Stride

>4th Level
Fire Shield
Wall of Fire

Some downside is that you don't have any fire punches like Ascendant Dragon and Four Elements do at level 3. Level 19 you could get Conjure Minor Elementals (which you can cast 1/day for free and use your spell slots) and Fog Cloud with Boon of Magic School Mastery all of which sounds neat. There's probably other spells that you could swap for and flavor with the fire stuff that I'm not immediately thinking of.

I started playing a dnd campaign some years ago which we're still continuing and my dm wanted me to host a campaign on the side so he could play for once. I was excited for that so I prepped up something after a one shot and it's been great, lots of learning as a dm and making mistakes but it's okay. I expected to host my campaign every other weekend so people would have time for personal stuff too.
It's been a year and a half and we've only done 12 sessions in total and one level up. First 4 sessions were very consistent, but then people started canceling and since spring we've been sitting at a rate of one session every two months. It wouldn't be that bad if it weren't for the fact that the sessions are usually cancelled the day prior or even 4 hours before, so I effectively can't plan anything for that day. I also feel the need to convert my campaign to an episodic format because I imagine it's hard to get invested into the plot. But the worst of all is the itch to play. I could play with others or even randoms, but I never know if there might be a day when everyone's available. It's the lack of consistency that really bothers me.
So idk what to do. I feel like it'd be better to just agree on a day that works every week, but that will just kill the campaign since there's no feeling that there should be a session on weekends.

How do Vestige warlocks talk/interact with their patron, since it sounds like the companion is supposed to be your patron? The companion appears to be able to speak, so are all interactions with the patron verbal after hitting level 3? If not, does anything stop the warlock from having the companion fuck off to a neighboring town and act as a living telephone between you and people there? Is the patron effectively an imprisoned power source for your magic abilities with no agency if you dismiss the companion and never bring it back out?

I had an idea for a campaign where there is a apostle of dark god offering (dubious) resurrection to anybody to gain followers so their God can gain power.
We can start the campaign with every PC having an item that acts as a catalyst for their adventure in their backstory and later to be revealed that the items were brought there by another god to stop the evil one.
Every dead PC becomes a new minion for the evil god.

Not too related to roleplay, but Zealot Barbarians hit really hard mechanically. I ran the numbers, and they actually stay very close to Berserkers until level 11 (I haven't really bothered calculating beyond that).
I honestly thought they were weaker than that, but they manage to stay competitive with the subclass that deals the most damage in the game while still being able to heal themselves. Pretty cool.
>>
are there any resources you anons recommend for domain level play and even BECMI type stuff like achieving godhood etc?

>Preserve life can restore up to half an ally's HP
Jesus Christ, that’s brutally lame. I used to think it meant you couldn’t heal a character for more than half their HP, like if a rogue has 30 HP, I could only heal them for up to 15. But now I realize it actually means I can’t heal them for MORE than half their HP. I’m disappointed, man. This feature is so much weaker than I thought it was going to be. And I’ve already created my character and gotten really invested in the roleplay of being a Life Cleric, too.
I guess it’s not that bad if you use it to bring an ally back from 0 HP, but it still sucks in pretty much every other situation. I was hoping I’d be able to use the feature outside of combat, but it’s basically useless for that.

That way, everyone’s incentivized to care about every kind of rest.

Arcane Recovery is a bad example because it directly circumvents the core mechanic being based on long rests. So how do I handle this? Should I have them meet the particular beholder treasure hunter while rescuing the family member of that PC? Or just hear about him? Maybe they can hear a rumor that he is seeking out the artifact as well and then they have to decide whether to rush to stop him? What do you guys think?

Why would I think that or try to convince you of it?
