I want to run a couple experiments, would anons mind making builds to see if they balance things better?
>Experiment 1: Talent Discount
Making a builds where your talent rating in one aura type provides a discount. This is to make basic techniques cheap, master techniques slightly less ecpensive, and leave legend techniques largely the same.
Compare your "G" rating to the rating required for a technique, if you G rating is higher it subtracts it's value from the point cost.
Example:
Seismic Strike costs 5 poimt to buy.
Your build has G3 in Core.
Seismic Strike only requires G1.
Seismic Strike now only costs 2 points for you.
>Experiment 2: Aura Burst Mode
Kufoku mentions you'll be able to Double your points after completing an Aura Burst campaign, so why not make builds for that?
Make a standard build for your freshly summoned conscript, then making Another build for your conscript after completing all their campaign missions.

The second build gets build and equipment points equal to their starting "Potential"(45 for talented, 35 for mutated, etc). They get no bonus alterations.

Given how the "Prodigy" alteration works,, double these bonus points points for your second build, but equipment points are not doubled.

Should the free techniques/skills we get from difficulty selection also get doubled by aura burst? In the lore doc, kofuko says the aura burst doubles all the powers he teaches us, not just the "points".

Yakuza build inspired by the really good Heavenly Instrument Discussion. Tried to make him viable out of the gate but didn’t want to compromise on certain things especially since even though I will focus on core I don’t want to be locked out of the best Weapon Links which require G3 Flow. Still that’s a long way off and currently he is a Blind Bludgeon user that can wield 4 invisible flails whose chains can extend to any length so that the heads of them can go flying at increasing velocities at people and hit with insane force. As a Yakuza he can also sneak his weapon anywhere with the Assassin’s Secret Cupboard.

I am considering if “Armed” is really worth it as I could simply learn 4 armed Deva or just get shapeshifting (or even transfigured by an Alchemist) long term. But it is a core part of the idea, while what I would replace it with is something like “Seen” that I don’t actually have a use for yet (wouldn’t even go for the known Eye powers but I am sure there are more).

Even with this cheating it is impossible to make a build that can be an actual threat to Trigram-tiers right at chargen. And you are more powerful than 99% of the City anyway, by default. Nothing changes.

>>98793364
If my build got the affinity discount survey anon is asking for it would have to go to flow since I bought the weapon links. Its actually really interesting as I am not focused on flow long term but a 3 point discount would actually nab be a bunch of basic powers (the whole Special Series, and cloudy spirit hand which was on my wishlist).

With the 7 point delta I would buy Martial Arts at legendary level.

Anon, I'm trying to play with point balancing to see what works. The default cyoa isn't really balanced well.
Basics are too expensive. The opportunity cost of buying them now vs learning them later is so high it genuine discourages people taking them at all.
Legendaries have the opposite issue, they're way too cheap. You can buy a legendary for only slightly more points than a master techniques, and some of the most overpowered legendaries are Cheaper than the average master technique.

I know can't fix number 2 because anons will just ignore it, so I'm trying to find what bandaids will get people to round out their builds with basic techniques.

What exactly are the benefits of having a spiritual patron for your sect that can't be accomplished through other means?
>>
>>98793497
Some of the great spirits are powerful enough to curbstomp the most optimized powerfag conscript build you can imagine. With or without surveyanon's handing you free points.
Having the equivalent of Zues in your sect handing out blessings and smiting anyone that tries to break in is a Massive boost in power and security.
>>
>>98793497
Most things can be accomplished through "other means". Spirits are the real power players in the setting though and having a powerful one could really open certain possibilities to you. Less valuable for a true alchemist build but everyone else would greatly benefit. Best idea for a Patron I heard was Kofuko himself and lore suggests he might be up for it to make his comeback.

>>98793494
I think it is a good exercise as Spirit Conscript is one of the most mechanically interesting CYOAs of all time but the issue you are messing with is pretty substantial.

IMO Spirit Conscript is a great cyoa because it has enormous breath AND depth, but that's it's issue as well. There are so many options and so few points. That by itself could work but what really hurts it is the options could broadly be defined as belonging to distinct categories and each category has that depth I mentioned. Then you realize that certain categories are just completely superior to others and you would ALWAYS invest in this category over a less important category.

At length we have discussed the most important category which we could broadly call our composite aura system, most infamously limitless meridians and a full set of affinities but also the vast aura system which none would skimp on even though limitless meridians uncaps your affinities and you could take a lesser one, this would also include specific bonuses to aura recovery like sacred fountain or interestingly meridian expansions now that multiplayer has died and people feel comfortable with overpowered and don't always need an ambivalent alteration.

Even after this category there are several categories before techniques that are more important. Namely training but in some cases companions as well. No one would skip raw martial arts skill in favor of the martial arts themselves for what should be obvious reasons for example. It's build specific here but most people are going to want to at least grab a legendary related to their build here and likely technique artisty which is good for everyone.

Only now do we get to the techniques but it's really a mistake to view them as one category. Legendary techniques are in a league of their own by definition and are the most important and great techniques are serious abilities compared to the basics that feel like cantrips.

.
>>
>>98793696
I wouldn't say all of this is absolute (some of it is) but generally even if we had a bunch more points we would invest deeper into the most important categories before spending on the weaker categories
>>
>>98793693
>All it'll take is an alchemist with access to earth's virology and germ theory research and we'll see shit straight out of the Tesident Evil and Prototype games.
Whew, good thing anons talked softie out of his chimeralord build...
>>
>>98793696
i wouldn't call training or companions more important than techniques, it's your choice which one of them you think will help you the most and let you survive until you get the others, i'd say in most cases it's best to start with strong techniques for that, maybe technique artistry to go with techniques is a good idea, but since you're assuming overpowered you get five trainings for free anyway so buying extra trainings feels like a serious mistake unless you have nothing other than hard training to take in your last alteration slot
>>

>>98793609
>>
>>98793727
Overpowered is a bandaid anon and part of why it works is it does give free legend trainings. Notice I said it isn't an absolute in all cases. Still I would say in general people want their trainings over techniques. That doesn't mean someone would not take a technique critical for their build for an initiate training they don't want but as a general rule it's more important. Companions are more build specific but I don't want to discount harem builds. Basic techniques are almost always at the very bottom of the priority list.
>>
>>98793768
if you offered me just techniques or just trainings i'd take techniques every time, they are more important in practically every single case
>>
>>98793621
Which is fine, it's just annoying that Wronganon keeps criticising combat builds for not being a cowardly pacifist build like his that attempts to be immune to everything because he thinks the world is out to get him.
>>
>>98793780
You just made it an absolute anon, which was my one fucking caveat.
>>
>>98793794
even making it more granular, in any singular technique versus training comparison i'd always take the technique first, first the technique i want to use with technique artistry, then technique artistry after, first resolute center, then athletics, first oscillating motion, then acrobatics, etc.

technique without training opens up the supernatural but you have to git gud manually, this is acceptable but the inverse situation is shit
>>
>>98793802
Good for you anon. Once again you are wrong.
>>
>>98793812
i accept your concession
>>
>>98793768
Oh yes training is quite superior to most techniques legendary just goes into supernatural territory on its own, plus you can get techniques eventually if you have the affinity for them not sure if it's possible to reach legendary training naturally that's a talent in its own right.
>>
>>98793830
of course it's possible, though i see now why people might think they need to get trainings and ignore techniques if you're imagining you're incompetent at learning mundane things but somehow simultaneously superhuman at learning techniques
>>
>>98793814
Alright anon. Make a challenged build. I will be nice and give you a free vast aura system with full G3s in everything and the prodigy alteration without wasting a slot (you get the two points). You can buy universal sovereign but you won't go to the spirit womb if you die. What would you do if you actually had to prioritize?
>>
>>98793845
just imagine i picked by the logic here >>98793802
>>
>>98793830
I do think the fast learner alteration is slept on because it would improve future mundane training but yea you aren't reaching legendary level normally.
>>
>>98793849
Post an actual build anon. Aww hell post your amazing Overpowered build that is so much better than everyone elses anon.
>>
>>98793839
>somehow simultaneously superhuman at learning techniques
Prodigy and Affinities
>>
>>98793845
actually fine, here i'll make it, but it'll be fucked because i'm doing it into 4chan's little text window:
human, modified challenged, street vendor, feudal spirit chateaus, pure blood, modified prodigy, perennial lotus, age disjunction younger, modified aura system and affinities, sense aura, body enhancement, assassin's secret cupboard, mirror world inversion

there's a build, i probably didn't mention some things but the only mechanically important ones are there

>>98793865
you have your affinities making you super smart too, something that'd take a regular human 60 years to learn probably takes you about 5 if a g3 affinity applies centrally to it, which includes the super smarts of flow for all mental components of learning by the way

gets even more absurd if you have additional bonuses from stat passives on top
>>
>>98793870
Good boy. See getting magic powers NOW is better for a street vendor or other true non-combatant but anyone making a combat build will load up on trainings that improve their specific profession before getting additional techniques (with the caveat that certain techniques are critical for certain build ideas). Namely martial arts or weaponry, but also things like stealth or deceit for a Stalker or even Ceremony for an Exorcist. You are in the minority by just wanting to be a cool guy with cool powers in a magic city. Totally fine but that isn't how most people are playing it.
>>
>>98793906
no, if i was making that into a combatant i'd have just picked two combat techniques, since that build's budget is 19 points worth of techniques and none of them are free i might have just gone for something like resolute+oscillating+lacerating touch, and not any trainings

this makes it MORE extreme, i might find room for trainings in an overpowered build sooner than here
>>
>>98793911
Well that really is dumb
>>
>>98793839
Well you are not superhuman at learning techniques your getting free cheats from Kofuku, unless you have prodigy or affinities your going to be pretty average at learning techniques. Trainings seem more like talents in those areas because Legendary is definitely not mundane skills that stuff is superhuman, master is already at peak human or beyond. Like one legendary training is probably a whole lifetime of dedicated training if not more, because you got to remember it also synergizes with your affinities so legendary training isn't what a mortal would have gained over a lifetime of training but someone with a potentially g3 affinity so the cost of time per point value makes training really cost effective as you can learn techniques in far shorter time.
>>
>>98793925
you gave me fucking g3s, why wouldn't i make use of them, i can pick up initiate martial arts in a week of sparring with g3 and the two initiate statuses, taking training in martial art here would be retarded

>>98793933
>Well you are not superhuman at learning techniques
you kind of are at g3, plus everyone has prodigy on top of that, even this modified challenged build i was challenged to could fit it regardless of other choices

>Legendary is definitely not mundane skills that stuff is superhuman, master is already at peak human or beyond
this doesn't seem to be the case for any of the mundane skill trainings so extrapolating that onto the supernatural ones is a big stretch

either way, even if you couldn't get to legendary training with g0, you still can with g3

>Like one legendary training is probably a whole lifetime of dedicated training if not more
yeah, hence why i said it might take someone at g0 60 years, while you only with g3 might take 5 years, and it gets even more absurd if you have additional stat bonuses from passives, like i imagine g3 and a heavy investment in techniques in the affinity (the legend statuses are most important here, unsurprisingly) could bring it all the way down to 1 year or less

>you got to remember it also synergizes with your affinities
it synergizes after you have it, it doesn't synergize to make it harder to learn it

>>98793947
>it synergizes after you have it, it doesn't synergize to make it harder to learn it
What I mean is that a g3 with legendary training would be equivalent to training with g3 for a lifetime. It doesn't make it harder to learn its that the training already accounted for the buffs. Like you might be able to achieve g0 levels of legendary training faster, but you will not achieve g3 synergizes levels of training faster because the stat boost for training is added trough the synergies so it's already the equivalent of training for that time at g3 for a lifetime.
>>
>>98793996
personally while i can agree that someone with g3 would get to higher training, i think standard legendary training that you take as a purchase in the cyoa is always what you're referring to as "g0 legendary training", and getting into genuinely superhuman levels training will require you to do it yourself one way or another

i think it's not good to refer to it that way, because by that logic there's also be a "g3+initiate status+legendary status level of legendary training" which is even higher than your version, and that just gets confusing because suddenly the g levels don't mean anything, i think it would be best if we just referred to it normally the way it's in the cyoa
>>
>>98794002
Well I personally think that the synergy is implied that the training is equivalent if you had trained with the corresponding affinity tier. Why would it be equivalent to training at g0 level if you have a g3 affinity? Otherwise it makes training kinda gimped.
>>
>>98794014
because it's a cyoa purchase separate from your g ratings, presumably everyone gets the same one, to me it strongly feels like that's something that would need to be pointed out

training isn't gimped, by this logic you just take as long as a mortal but you still arrive to extreme superhuman levels of skill, and compared to a mortal you still train enormously faster because of your g rating
>>
>>98794019
Well it seems to be pointed out as training is directly stated to synergize with affinity
>>
>>98794030
that is true for both of our versions
>>
>>98794032
Well yes, my assumption is that the synchronization is equivalent if you were training for the same amount of time at that specific affinity level.
>>
>>98794046
but it requires a reframing of the entire skill system in a way that doesn't really have a mention in the cyoa
>>
>>98794048
Well that is what most of the cyoa essentially is, the exact power levels are super vague. Who knows how powerful a g3 amplified g1 technique is? At the same time no one knows how powerful a g3 training is. It's not really that different
>>
>>98793247
>>
>>98794053
the way i see it is:
G = raw affinity
T = base training level irrespective of affinity
synergy my way = G*T
synergy your way = G*T*G

it feels like you're taking the bonus twice over
>>
>>98794061
Well no? Training is the time you train and a G is the affinity so it's just G Ă— T, affinity x time
>>
>>98794064
but let's say you have an exact amount of skill, like for example you know exactly the contents of a texbook, nothing more and nothing less, and you are at g0 in the relevant affinity

if you suddenly become g1 in the relevant affinity, you don't suddenly have more knowledge than before, you still only know what was in the textbook, however you can use it better

that use it better part is the synergy G*T

if you gain more knowledge than there was in the texbook that is the G*T*G synergy
