I mean, if they were made into squads with record sheets similar to Gothic abominations, maybe. Like, a single pip per dude, damage spills over to the next guys if they're out of cover or if they're attacked by an anti-infantry weapon, that sort of thing.

I just get a really tiny brush and do a few layers from dark to light towards one of the corners, then add a dot or couple of lines for glare in the darker corner. I also make sure to go back over the edges so that any paint that got slopped over the edges gets covered up and it looks crisp again. Cockpits are a natural focal point of the model so I like to take my time on them so they look nice.

Is precision ammo and stealth armor actually cancer or am I just salty cause my Locust IIC couldn't hit shit even on 6s and got his leg blown off on turn 3?
>>
>>98795135
If you're interested in the Clans, then ood of Kerensky trilogy is mandatory reading, and then the Jade Phoenix trilogy.
>>
>>98795762
Little bit of A, little bit of B. Personally, I don't think precision is too bad, but I mainly see it when I'm playing later eras where it mostly shows up in LAC/5s and 2s. Stealth armor is rough, tho, especially if your lance isn't built to deal with it.
>>
>>98795762
Like many things, Stealth becomes less of a problem if you make sure your opponent is tracking it correctly. It adds 10 heat. It gives no defensive bonus in short range. It hostile ECMs the unit using it. Most stealth units don't even carry anything that would be affected by ECM because it would be a nombo, but a lot of them do carry hot weapons and modest (at best) heat sinks. An entire PPCs worth of heat is a lot when you already have two PPCs and only 10 DHS.
>>
>>98795663
If all your doing is reading for pleasure then what does it matter?
>>
>>98795762
Precision ammo is a lot less egregious than clan pulse lasers. A precision AC/20 is certainly scary, but it also has dirt range and does nothing to cover.

It also does far less to big slow mechs than fast ones. If your main defense is armor and you can usually expect +1 TMM, losing that is a lot less impactful than going from a +3 down to a +1 after precision strips your movement mods.

>>
>>98796364
If you consider thick, meaty logs to be "hairs", then sure. The things that were omitted from the book (and therefore canon) would have fucked up a lot of the setting if they were canonized.
>>
>>98796314
Novels are the highest type of canon. They're describing things that actually happened in-universe.

The BT cartoon is canon. As in it was aired as seen on TV in-universe and people quote it in short stories.

Fluff literature, such as TROs, Future History books, descriptions of specific planetary systems and House Books is a mid form of canon. It's literature written by specific interest groups for specific purposes and doesn't necessarily reflect the truth or the whole story.

Art is the lowest form of canon. They're an approximation of an idea of how things look in-universe.

Did Capellans ever make a Stealth Armour variant of anything that they then didn't also slap on a load of heat generating PPC's or Plasma Rifles? I know they went out of their way to slap a PPC onto their version of the Emperor for some reason.
>>
>>98796443
>The BT cartoon is canon. As in it was aired as seen on TV in-universe and people quote it in short stories.

I always have fun with trying to guess exactly when and where that cartoon was shown in the inner sphere. My money is currently on 3055 to 3056 in the Lyran part of the FedCom. My headcanon is the later seasons got cancelled because all of the Marik Switcheroo stuff that led to Operation Guerrero and the beginings of the FedCom Civil war coming out in 57, and the public not really having an appetite to have both Victor an Katherine glazed in the same kids show.
>>
>>98796653
They have a Victor that can stand off with a gauss rifle. Its backup weapons are hot, but also short ranged enough that hopefully you don't need to have the stealth on while using them.
>>
>>98796669

>The only decent variant they ever made is practically the Davion Totem-Mech.

Hilarious. I love it.
>>
>>98796653
There are a number of stealth armored mechs with gauss rifles. Some also mount things like ER PPCs, but some are pretty much just gauss jockeys. From experience, playing into a stealth armored gauss wall isn't fun.
>>
>>98796653
There's a bunch of stuff that has secondary weapons you don't want to fire while the stealth armor is on, so you plink from long range with stealth on and turn off stealth if something gets close. There's also stuff like the Pillager 5Z, which pairs with TSM to do a pretty annoying clan assault impression.

>>98794358
I've said it before, but I think Sword and Dagger would work. It introduces the audience to Hanse Davion, Arden Sortek and a lot of other important characters, has a pretty self-contained story that still ties into a lot of other stuff and since the novel has a lot of things that aren't really canon anymore the writers would have a lot of freedom to put their own spin on it.
>>
>>98796825
Secret evil clones is a silly story line.
>>
>>98796668
If we want to take Mechwarrior 5's Chaos Reigns campaign as loosely canon, we know that it had at least aired by 3053; and that tracks with most other descriptions of both the holovid and the events inspiring it. While it's mostly a shaggy-dog type retcon, it also tracks with the presence of a number of mechs in the show being featured as propaganda and artistic license, rather than being accurate to the Clan Invasion period and events.
>>
>>98797070
I was wondering if this article would reference it, but it sadly does not.
>>
>>98797018
Wasn't it just some drifter they gave plastic surgery and hypnosis rather than an actual clone?
>>
>>98797130
I think they were planning to clone Hanse eventually and the body double was just a stopgap. It might not be canon, but there's a mission in either HBS or MW5 involving a Cappellan convoy carrying DNA samples and equipment for the project.
>>
>>98797130
Clone, body double, whatever, it's stupid.
>>
>>98797130
Most of the body doubles are either method actors (Thomas, Melissa) or MK Ultra victims (Hanse, Devlin) with whatever cosmetic surgery it takes to make them look the part. The only one that's maybe up in the air is Joshua Marik, that might have just been some other kid with leukemia they grabbed off the street.
>>
>>98797216
>The only one that's maybe up in the air is Joshua Marik, that might have just been some other kid with leukemia they grabbed off the street.

I like to imagine that they found a kid who was a close physical resemblance and gave him the right kind of leukemia. IIRC it was a rare variety.
>>
>>98797167
There are non cloning reasons to want the DNA of someone you are trying to impersonate. Faking test results, for example.
>>
>>98797268
Actually giving the double the type of leukemia you know you can't cure would seem very shortsighted when you control all the doctors involved.
>>
>>98797280
That's the main hurdle even to body doubles. Thomas was subjected to multiple medical, DNA, personality, knowledge, and skill tests, basically everything parliament could think of before they accepted he was real (although in that case, he probably was real since Thomas and False Thomas were parent-trapping the entire inner sphere). You need to either have the right answer or have already thoroughly compromised the labs doing the tests.

iirc, there's even a little fluff bit in very old lore about genetic proofmarks being a normal part of sending and receiving sensitive mail.

Minobu's casting would be basically in line with the books. A tall muscular black guy. The difference is that his wife wouldn't be an average black girl; he'd have a harem of a redhead white girl, a blue eyed blond white girl (who spends the whole film pregnant and being super happy that she is and how she can't wait for more babies), a brunette white girl who's the bratty one, and spends the film romancing a petite Asian girl with blond dyed hair who finally gives in just before Minobus goes off to die at the end in a similar scene as when Tom Cruise bangs the wife of the guy he killed in Last Samurai. No white man in the film will be in any sort of relationship with a man, but every girl in the Dragoons will lust over Minobu the whole time.

This is in line with the propaganda that film studios are feeding you, and you know it.

Very short story this time. Had original plans for it to be longer, but I had trouble writing this one, so I'll just do more short parts later.
---
It had been a month since the infamous Shen Chen chili incident. The Leopard that had brought the new mechs was still docked. This issue of securing the wrecked Phoenix Hawk had been resolved long ago, yet it still hadn't departed, which lead to various rumors as to why. Anything other than the most likely scenario of just having to wait for a jumpship to come into system.

This particular morning, most of the cadets had already gathered for the first class, save 3. Janusz Kotow continue to stick to himself. Occasionally he could be seen enjoying the recreation facilities, but otherwise he had taken to spending most of his time in his guest quarters on the Leopard as he waited to leave. Another was Bob Denard, who had been in less and less classes as Colonel Harlan "Rook" Voss had taken to given him some disciplinary training since he had not only mouthed off to Shen Chen, but made motions to fight. As Rook was keen to point out, Chen may not be in Denard's chain of command, but he is a representative of the Capellan Confederation and a potential client as a result and Denard needed to learn how to handle potential clients better. This extra discipline typically came in the form of simply running laps around the compound. Lots and lots of laps. The third missing cadet was Vladimir Ignatyev. While the trainer for the class was slow to arrive this morning, he'd face no consequences for being late. The same treatment would not be extended to the cadets.

"One of us should go get him." William McCormick said to Wang Lee and Eleanor Gale, who sat nearby. "The Shen already makes his life miserable enough. Who knows what he'll do if Vladimir is late.
[1/2]
>>
>>98797662
"He probably overslept." Wang Lee said. "He barely gets any these days. I'm always seeing him as the last one training at the end of the night and the first one in the morning. He's beyond burnt out."

"We'll all go get him then." Eleanor said. "If the Shen has a problem with it, I'll say that I was running a training exercise for all of us. The Shen won't get upset with me." McCormick and Lee both gave nods of assent and the three of them took off at a very brisk paced walk to Vladimir Ignatyev's room. They arrived and Wang Lee knocked on the door.

"Vladimir." "Lee spoke loudly. "Vladimir. Are you in there?" McCormick shook his head and then went with a more forceful approach and instead of simply knocking pounding the side of his fist against the door.

"Yo!" McCormick shouted. "Ignatyev! Wake up! You gotta get moving or the Shen's going to find a way to fuck up your life even further!" There was no sound of movement from inside and McCormick pounded on the door again. Still no response, so he tried the handle, hoping the different sound of it shaking and jangling might do the trick. To his surprise however, it turned and the door opened. McCormick looked to Gale and Lee before walking in. The 2 of them both followed him in. They looked around the room and saw it was empty. "Where the hell is he?"

"Guys!" Lee shouted to the others, getting their attention. "He, he's in the bathroom."

"Vlad! Pinch it off and hurry the fuck up or you're..." McCormick stopped as he rounded the corner and saw what Lee also did.

"He's, he's..."

"He's what?" Eleanor said as she began to lose here patience over this and quickly turned around to walk over to where Lee and McCormick were. She stopped with a gasp as she finally got to see Vladimir. He was hanging from a rope, by his neck, limp, and dead. Vladimir Ignatyev had killed himself.

These kinds of sci-fi/fantasy settings might be too complex for you if you don't see a difference between every event depicted in a game being canon and the broad events and setting being canonised in an in-universe document.

Among other things, the protagonist mercenaries are vastly more deadly than any book depiction of the Wolf's Dragoons I'm aware of.
>>
>>98797666
Well it's a good thing cappies aren't people or that might be tragic.

no videogames are considered canon. none.

but pieces of the videogames have been inspiration for canon books. for example, mw4v gave us multiple mechs for TRO:3067, such as argus or chimera, taken nearly as is. but mw4m gave us hellcat, which is only slightly inspired by the game, as its canonized version arrives a century later than in the vidya. similarly, HBS BT only inspired the arano canon book. the game itself is not canon at all.

Fwiw, one of the missions from the game appears in Shrapnel Magazine, which is supposed to be fully canon. It's been a while since I read it, but the player character and one of the default pilots are implied to be there, though they're never mentioned by name.
>>
On the one hand, very few mechs reach the speeds a modern car does on an inter city road, and are almost never described as moving in an organic way. On the other, everyone from the greenest 17 year old to the best clan khans hit mechs in a random location with a bias towards center mass
>>
>>98798233
Considering they're sometimes literally firing from the hip while sprinting at 64kph or faster, any hit at all is an incredible accomplishment.
>>
>>98798233
>very few mechs reach the speeds a modern car does on an inter city road,

There's a point at which ground transportation becomes too fast for reasonable pilots to react safely and reliably to environmental things.

Frankly, IRL civilian cars drive faster than that, which is part of why there are so many accidents all the fucking time.
>>
>>98797666
A shitter pilot Vlad may have been but he didn't deserve this. Shen wasted a valuable mechwarrior.
>>
>>98798233
The fuck you on about, a standard Phoenix Hawk runs 60 mph? Anything going faster than 6/9 is smoking the average sedan driving the limit and anything that goes 7/11 or greater is smoking anyone speeding on the interstate.

There are 6 chassis in Introtech that do that with a standard engine before they even start hotrodding things again with XLs and adding MASC and Superchargers.
>>
>>98798224
That's how the apocryphal -> canon pipeline goes. If it's republished in a canon source, then it's canon (to the exact extent it is depicted in the canon source).
You want to get into real corner cases, you have to look at stuff like RPG adventures. Royalty and Rogues is at least somewhat canon, because an NPC that the PCs are supposed to face off against in an arena shows up in a later canon source, with part of his backstory being that he was the reigning champion until he was "defeated by a mercenary" and took brain damage that rendered him unable to pilot anymore. But does that mean that my players characters are canon because when I ran it, one of them beat him? Probably not.

>IRL civilian cars drive faster than that, which is part of why there are so many accidents all the fucking time.
This is why speed limits should be capped at 25mph/40kph across the world. Nobody needs to travel faster in a car, and if you have to get there sooner, either take a plane or readjust your life to live closer to where you have to go.

Or limit cars going faster than that to specially prepared surfaces that are graded flat and kept clear of detritus and things aside from cars.

Cool faggots, name a SINGLE instance in the entirety of the lore that has a Timberwolf or a Atlas do backflips, dodge like Neo from the Matrix or any sort of weebshit. Guess what faggots, a Timbie is so dangerous because it can either outrun anything it can't outfight or outgun anything that can keep up. A Atlas is a gunbrick that simply walks through shit, and people who think it's a good idea to get close find out what a AC20 is really good at.

Thanks to Mekbay, I can tell you.

Of Canon Chassis (which there are 738, with 4243 variants) there are 258 Chassis with ground speeds of 6/9 or greater (or 1380 variants total).

We're drifting away from the "mechs aren't all that fast" point, but your impression is that each of the canon designs are equally distributed? When the 3050 Sword of Light goes to war they are equally likely to bring a Stinger 3R as a Rattlesnake as a Valkyrie QD(Karano)?

3050 Sword of Light is 2 medium battalions, 1 heavy battalion, and 1 assault battalion. So given the mediums and heavies that are common to the Dracs at the time, a lot of 5/8s. Mostly 5/8s, which is better than the speeds a modern car does on an inter city road. Well, the speeds they should be doing.

>ESTEROS
>HINTERLANDS
>6 JUNE 3151

The politics of Esteros were incomprehensible to Roy. He doubted that they made much more sense to the locals. As near as he could tell, the local beuraucrats were attempting to unify the planet under their dominion, but few paid them heed without the Jade Falcon touman putting words in their mouths and punishing those who failed to follow them. His employer was one of many such dissidents, seeking to esablish her own enclave independent of the Esteros Assembly. In practice, that meant much more patrolling than Roy and Elizabeth were comfortable with. It was not only that it reminded them of the quiet misery of the solhama, but also that they had chosen this contract for the salvage terms. Perhaps word had gotten out about a Hellbringer being on the loose, for precious little came their way for them to do battle with.

That finally changed with a single datapad arriving to the barn they had commandeered as a 'Mech hangar. The Assembly had established an outpost too close for their employer's liking, and she wanted it removed. BattleMech forces were expected to be in the area, so she was sending the biggest guns she had.

>OpFor hires Local Support, gains CPK-65 Copper SecurityMech

"Contact." Elizabeth's report was swiftly followed by red dots appearing on Roy's HUD. He grinned wickedly as the designations filtered in. Firefly. Flea. Valkyrie. Firestarter. And a new one, a Copper SecurityMech. There would be no escape for them this time.

"Hold position. I am coming." Roy pressed the throttle forward, his Hellbringer accelerating up to running pace, each step jostling him in his seat. Keying his comms system to an open frequency, he began broadcasting in the clear. "Attention, Assembly forces. I am Star Commander Roy of the J-" he caught himself, paused, resumed, "the Dezgra-on-Demand mercenary company. I am coming to destroy this base and kill everyone inside. Since you have no concept of honor, I will threaten your reputation. If you flee from me again, I will deliver this BattleROM to your employer and ensure that every liason on Kandersteg sees it. I will turn you into a laughing stock that none will ever hire again."
Roy's Hellbringer crested the final hill, brining him into line of sight of the opposing force. Slamming the throttle down to a halt, he finished, "Now do your duty and FIGHT ME!"

Most pilots stomped their jump jet pedals. For Elizabeth's Elemental frame, it was more of a flick of the ankle. The Stinger leapt up under her, sailing over Roy as she repositioned. Gaining her brief airborne vantage, she saw the enemy lance (there were five, surely that was a star, quineg?) running headlong into the valley, seeking to shelter their advance from the Hellbringer's guns. All except the Flea, spurred on by its supercharger, which rushed too far forward. Blue lightning lashed out from Roy's 'Mech, and Elizabeth laughed as the miniscule 'Mech was nearly biscected by the impact.

Then her flight was over. She landed hard, nearly driving her head into her knees, and spoiling her shot despite her perfect enfilade of the approaching enemy. A spray of laser fire rose to meet her, one lashing into her Stinger's arm. Bug 'Mechs and Sphereoid pilots or not, they were still armed and dangerous.

Roy's elation at his hit was short-lived. Maneuvering around his chosen hill to line up a shot on the mercenary Firestarter, he was interrupted as the Firefly came rocketing down straight toward him, jump jets flaring. His snapshot volley went wide, with only a piddling spray of sparks telling of his AP Gauss Rifles accomplishing something.

"Jumping for the woods! Cover me!"
Elizabeth was faring little better than Roy. A missile from the Copper had torn through the remaining armor on her right arm, nearly destroying it. Pressing her jump jets again, she again lined up on the Copper, firing her pulse laser and being rewarded with a hit. It wasn't much, but her Stinger's heat sinks were far from equal to this task, and her cockpit was rapidly converting itself into the Inner Sphere's smallest sauna. As expected, the Firefly came down behind her for a second time, but only this time to catch one of Roy's PPCs in the arm, the limb tearing away in a shriek of tortured metal.

Swinging the Hellbringer around, Roy caught the Copper moving slowly as it navigated the sloping terrain. Elizabeth was getting good at jumping. The Firestarter leapt after her, flamers blazing, but a quick feather of her jump jets dodged the volley. (Oh, shit, forgor I left the Stackpole rules on. That almost got really nasty there.)

At the end of Turn 10, our battle ends. With two victories under our belt, the opposition folds, and we will have a quiet final month of our contract.

>Warchest: 3150 SP
>Combat Pay (Total Victory): +750 SP
>Straight Support (40%): +68 SP
>End-of-Month Pay (x2): +700 SP
>Total: 4668 SP

Finally, we have some options. The Copper is a wreck that we should sell, but the Firefly is still salvageable. While we are pretty close to our BV cap for a Scale 1 unit, it never hurts to have a backup, and it could be the start of a move up to Scale 2
>Copper: +113 SP Salvage
>Firefly-5A: +349 SP Salvage OR -149 SP Claim

Our 'Mechs took significant damage in the fight. The Hellbringer hits like a truck, but it pays for it in armor. Roy has an engine crit and 2 lasers down, while Elizabeth has a blown out Lower Leg and two components hanging on by a single pip.
>Hellbringer full repair: -130 SP
>Hellbringer armor only repair: -32 SP
>Stinger full repair: -40 SP
>Stinger armor only repair: -10 SP
>Reload ATM-6 bin (4/10, one bin in reserve): -10 SP
>Reload AP Gauss Rifle bin (26/40): -10 SP
>Reload AMS bin (23/24): -10 SP
>Firefly full repair (if claimed): -150 SP
>Reload Firefly LRM-5 bin (20/24): -10 SP

Rolling for the market on our next month, there is a GRF-3N Griffin available for 1560 SP. With the same caveats as claiming the Firefly, should we take it?

And last but not least, with our quiet month ahead, we can focus on training. Both Roy and Elizabeth may improve one skill by one step if we so choose. The cost of training Elizabeth is 100 SP for either skill, and 200 SP for Roy.

What are your orders, /btg/?

Can you scare up some more dezgra warriors if you had 3 Mechs to run?

Anyway, I'm skeptical about the Firefly. It's sort of a jack-of-all-trades, but too light to do any of them well.

A Griffin -3N, on the other hand, is quite the customer. It's pretty expensive, though. I have no idea how much SP are worth, in practice. Is it worth paying 1/3 of your stockpiled SP for it?

There's a good collection of named Falcons roaming around the Hinterlands, and we can always fluff any generic MechWarriors we pick up. In particular, there's actually a decent set right here on Esteros, though RAW requires us to be under-strength to hire them. Then again, it's not like we have a league to complain at us if we take them on anyway.

>>98799371
Pretty sure American cities have higher population density than nearly any place in Europe, aside from places built around old medieval towns where all the buildings are crammed extremely close together since they originally needed to fit inside the city walls. On the other hand, the entire population of Finland is smaller than that of the Berlin metropolitan area or most large-ish US cities, despite Finland actually being quite a large country by European standards in terms of surface area (it's bigger than the UK or Italy, and IIRC about the same size as Spain).

>>

Yeah, turns out that when you finish one deposit and the government refuses to let you tap another, production goes down. Oops, guess we've hit peak oil, everybody panic!
>>
>>98799671
NTA but as a Petroleum Geologist, BP had to steer away from renewable shit a couple years ago to renew their reserves as they were killing their company. The big push now is renewing exploration off Venezuela and the west coast of Africa. Same with Royal Dutch Shell which has tried to get away from the name even while holding all the best deposits in Indonesia that the powers in the region like the Japs have wanted since WWII.
>>
>>98799671
>>98799697
IIRC (I'm trained as an economic geologist, but mining rather than oil so this admittedly isn't my area of expertise) the problem with North Sea deposits is that drilling there is a lot more expensive than drilling for oil and gas in the Middle East or Russia, due to the deposits being under water in a region with strong winter storms. Plus the individual deposits are often rather small (the Brent field, from which the term for Brent crude oil is derived for, was already depleted decades ago). So unless oil price is extremely high or the government is willing to subside the drilling, it's cheaper for companies to buy oil from the Middle East.
Norway does a lot of oil drilling from the North Sea, but it's done by a state-owned company that uses the profit to run a state investment fund, so it doesn't matter to them that you could theoretically make more profit drilling oil elsewhere (since it's not like the Saudis would let the Norwegian government drill oil on their territory without paying them for it).
>>
>>98799789
Never forget that the reason the Middle East and Ghawar has been maintained is that they weren't tapped until after WWII, and the intention of the people there was for the oil to last for 200 years. Really smart planning, honestly. You can see why they built OPEC, You're 100% right about the cost of wells, though. It's why you won't see new fracking in Texas unless gas gets super high. It's guaranteed returns of shit wells, so not worth it unless the price is high.

The winds and shit winter weather is what makes the cold North Sea countries great for offshore wind, though. That's what build all the companies that tried to come to the US and then folded the second the Biden subsidies got yanked, because the environment doesn't work so profitably on the American East Coast.
>>
>>98799789
Eh, fair enough. That's where you start getting into talking government policy and the benefits of having some national supply just in case you were to end up in the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY situation where the LEGENDARILY STABLE regions of Russia and the Middle East were to blow up at the same time.

But, hey, for the Euros it's natural gas, over here it's diesel, because we fell right into the same logic.
>>
>>98799821
>over here it's diesel, because we fell right into the same logic.

We should have much more diesel. It's just the refineries are running stuff through two-stage catalytic cracking units to boost the amount of gasoline per barrel from 30% to 50%. You tell any manufacturer to change their output and it takes a minute.
>>

Not quite. Diesel crackers are their whole own bit of kit, mutually exclusive with catalytic crackers, and expensive as all hell to manufacture. Refining is taking crude and removing the shit from it, cracking is what you break the shit down into instead of having to sell it as bunker oil, and shifting from cracking into gasoline to cracking into diesel isn't something you can just flip a switch on. The two places that were really invested in diesel on that level were Russia and the Arab Peninsula. Russia is Russia, with the bonus that those units are such a massive pain in the ass that they're a preferred target component of the refinery for Ukrainian strikes. The Peninsula is in slightly better shape, because for the most part their refineries shut down when storage space ran out. Now that outflow is recovering, the incentives are starting to pile up for them to restart production and get diesel moving while they can still make a killing on it, even at wartime insurance rates.
>>
>>98799850
We're kinda talking past each other. Refining is separating out the various fractions by heating. Cracking is taking bigger organic chains and making them into smaller ones. In America, we take refined diesel and further crack it into gasoline. The Russians are taking the heavier fractions like kerosene and cracking them into diesel.

By not cracking stuff, we would wind up with a higher natural fraction of diesel, but we're not doing that.

>The winds and shit winter weather is what makes the cold North Sea countries great for offshore wind, though. That's what build all the companies that tried to come to the US and then folded the second the Biden subsidies got yanked, because the environment doesn't work so profitably on the American East Coast.
Eh, they could still probably manage on the East Coast, I heard that all those projects actually got boned due to a CERTAIN ANTI-WIND Administration cucking them out of the building permits...
>>

I'm in the science and budget side of this, and it's purely because that shit can't make money. You should have seen the begging on the carbon sequestration side these last few years too. "If only the gubmerment would pay us more." is like every paper.
>>
>>98799871
>In America, we take refined diesel and further crack it into gasoline
I don't THINK that's the case. I won't claim expertise, but frankly at these numbers we would be seeing it in action if it was. A cursory search says it's physically possible, but keeps digging up talk about how painfully inefficient it is. I think you are misreading where that extra 20% gasoline is coming from, because as best as I can tell, the universal standard is to take it out of the asphalt-tier oil.
>>
>>98799897
>I'm in the science and budget side of this, and it's purely because that shit can't make money.
Like hell it can't, here in Iowa we're up to 60% wind power.
Sure it's far from perfect, but you want to tell me that the East Coast has less environmental energy than the Mid-west?
>>
>>98799926
Nigga, when the Federal government was paying half of the turbine cost, what makes you think anything about power share vs. profitability? Same with solar in Texas. Iowa is also the literal #1 wind in the nation at 57%.
>>
>>98799941
The only reason it caught on in Iowa is because corporations saw how god damn cheap that energy was!
And that's JUST onshore wind, not some hybrid offshore/tidal job!
>>
>>98799954
>how god damn cheap that energy was
We got some similar wind in Oklahoma and we were told it was 20 years before the turbines would pay themselves off with the government discounts back in 2008. Most of them haven't lasted 20 years in tornado alley. Wind also only has a capacity factor of like 1/3 max output.
>>

Pretty sure that IS without Government subs, 10 to 20 years it what it'd take for a small-scale "residential" turbines, but the utility scale ones are usually under a decade.
And Government subsidies are usually intended to help build production capability and thus bring per unit cost down.

Not at this time. I already have the story outline in my head of how to reach battle 2, the teams decided for the 2nd battle, and even the extra rules that will be in effect for them.
Hope you like fog and individual initiatives.
It will certainly be easier for me to manage just 13 mechs in a game as opposed to 16 mechs and 2 tanks. Should make the turns of game 2 go just that much faster, cause I'm anticipating a bit longer of a game because of the madness I'm going to do with it.
After game 2, I'll again ask the players for pilot rolls again to represent potential skill growth. I'll also figure out who, if any, will have chances or offers for new mechs. Then I'll open up the roster to 3 new slots if people want to join in, but it's also fine if no one does. I even already have an idea for writing out my pilot, Hobby, if a 4th person even wants to join in. I really don't want to go beyond an 8v8 for these things though.
As it stands now, 1 more pure story plot and then a final story plot which will also reveal the teams and directly lead in to the start of game 2.
>>

Infantry all the way to space battles. But most games are small amounts of mechs fighting each other. There is also alpha strike, which is faster than classic Battletech and allows larger armies, but loses granularity. But yes, rules for infantry, battle armor, vehicles, artillery, aircraft, dropships, up to warships in space.

A Nova is not a Binary, it's a Star. You can have a Binary that's a Star of Mechs and a Star of Elementals, but a Nova is a specific tactical unit that counts as one Star for organizational purposes.

But you can technically have a Binary and a Trinary and call it a Cluster. All of the other Star Colonels will make fun of you, though.

And for anything involving Mechs and bigger than a company, you're basically looking at Fortress or Overlord. Or 2 Unions.

They were going to do that anyway considering only a single star is fully omnimechs, the rest being mostly second line garrison IIC, C refits and genuine Jade Falcon second line shit buckets.
Destined for infinite garrison duty and hoping Steiner comes by to play, or maybe the wolves, or the horses, or the other falcon commanders because they want to challenge me to a trial of possession for the Warhawk C.

If we look at the Wolf Clan and Jade Falcon sourcebooks (which give us full rosters!), a typical Cluster is at 4-5 Binaries or Trinaries, usually mostly Trinaries, and sometimes including Supernovas.

That's the problem with wind energy. Even without tornados outright destroying them, heavy wind is going to inflict more wear and tear to the point that they become a net drain on money and resources from the maintenance costs. The only places where wind turbines can be expected to have a decent operational lifetime is in places where they'll never be more than a small supplement to the power grid.

Interesting aside. When I was hunting for my current job back in 2019, I almost got hired by Texas A&M for a statewide study on how wind turbines are killing the fuck out of the bat population of Texas. They wanted to set up these ultrasonic detectors and send us for surveys all over the state to track populations. Apparently, pops are getting hammered even harder than from the white nose epidemic. Also, the windfarms have to have decent money behind them. We got like 37k for a quarter mile easement back in 2009 to have some high voltage transmission lines put through one of our farms to a new wind power place being developed.

Hey, NEA, I remember what you're always saying about Typos? It says Kit Fox J, but the BV cost is for a Kit Fox T.

Anyway, let's crunch some numbers. Since we are considering bending the rules to hire the Falcons on-hand, I will assume that we pay their initial sign-on bonus, as well as their upgrade to permanent hire cost. Angelica and her Kit Fox come with the risk of running off on us, but that is a problem for after the next contract. In total, hiring everyone on hand would bring us from 3668 SP down to 2365 SP. This would give us a full 5 points of units for a mixed star, sitting at 5403 BV without pilot adjustments. This would bring us up to a Scale 2 unit, doubling both our base pay and operating costs to 1000 SP per month. If we paid the additional 1560 SP for the Griffin-3N (and gave up on the joke of shoving Elizabeth into a Stinger), this would bring us to 6209 BV and 805 SP. Assuming that we repair the Hellbringer, that will cost us 130 SP, down to 675. The Stinger could then either be repaired for 40 SP and kept in reserve or sold to bring us to 1052 SP. In either of those cases, we will be tight enough that we will have to jump straight into a new contract, but having more money on hand would give us a little extra leeway on transport and base pay terms. Note that the Hellbringer's repair costs do not include ammo reloads (up to 30 SP), and we may re-configure OmniMechs for 1/4th of their tonnage in SP if we really want to fine-tune the BV.

Any thoughts?

There's nothing to suggest any Jews on Zion. The names of the moons (Talit and Bimah, "Prayer Shawl" and "Altar") don't make any sense for actual Jews to have given, and Jews would probably have used the Hebrew spelling for Be'er Sheva instead of English Beersheba. Jews probably also wouldn't have named it Zion, but that's more speculation.

My guess is that it was named by Judaism-enthusiasts, probably Christians of some sort (cf. Zion National Park).

Or Irian, which is what IrTech is named for.

There should really be more small scale stories in Battletech. Having Mechwarrior stuff going on in neocorpo systems sounds cool
>>
I just ordered the scouring sands box, looking forward to try the solo rules. For people in Dutchland, https://tabletopgames.nl/nl/21-battletech has a nice discount going. Only thing is, he only ships inside the Netherlands as standard and to Germany and Belgium on request.
>>
>>98803997
The problem is that there's not much room for big stompy robots in those stories, and the moment you try to have a story without big stompy robots, a certain class on fan and Herb get angry.

Hell, look at the pre-made RPG adventures. Almost all have Mech combat in them, very often for no apparent reason (I'm looking at you, Living Legends).

Speaking as someone who lives at 1700m or so, I've always wondered if you gets ever get oxygen poisoning or something.

Guess the borderless EU doesn't apply to postal carriers?
>>
>>98804069
I think all postal carriers could ship internationally but not all of them do because it costs more, and not all sellers are willing to ship internationally because of the increased postal fees.
Haven't seen it with miniatures, but I've bought Lego pieces through sellers on Bricklink, and some of the small sellers only ship to their own country or neighboring ones.

Snivelry. They aren't even crossing an ocean.

Kek, the part of Dutchland where I'm located is not polder flat, I even live some 25m above sea lvl. But I have seen real mountains, my swamp brain is blown everytime.
>Oxygen poisoning
If you are that high up all the time, do you notice the air is diverent when you go into the Lowlands?
>>98804069
There are some new rules about packaging that caused a big stir but nobody is following those rules and they are not (yet) enforced also. In this case, the store owner is some older boomer dude, I ordered there before a few years ago, then he got health problems and wanted /needed to quit the store but the website never closed and now he is selling some wargame stuff again. He also only uses PostNL for shipping, idk maybe he thinks shipping internationally is still a real hassle or he really just doesn't get it. Battletech is kinda scarce in this region of the world so I'll take it.
>>
What resource is there that can list all of the Battle Armor with Modular Weapon Mounts? Mekbay and Megamek don't seem to track that.
>>
>>98804127
>If you are that high up all the time, do you notice the air is diverent when you go into the Lowlands?

Yes, actually. I was joking about the oxygen poisoning, but altitude sickness (from the thinner air) is a real thing. It's mostly a headache, nausea, and feeling tired, and is always reduced endurance, but at It's worst it can cause fluid in your heart or your brain and can even be fatal! That won't happen at 1700m, but at 2500m or so it's a very real risk, and the lowest case of High Altitude Cerebral Edema was only 2100m!

It takes a week or two to get used to it.

When people acclimated to high altitude go down, we become tiny supermen, able to run forever. That's why runners and cyclists train at altitude. My high school's track was used by the Japanese women's Olympic running team!
>>
>>98804150
Side comment: we need La Paz Olympics (~3600m) because it would be fucking hilarious.

What, just because they betrayed everything they believed in, became impotent pets, and were ultimately crushed without fanfare?
>>
>>98804173
A wise decision, the worthless should be disregarded in all things.
>>
>>98804176
that's every clan though. they all betrayed everything they even went on the exodus FOR to worship sicky nicky's brainfaggoted retardedness.
>>
>>98804211
No that's jumping a step. They went to escape the Succession Wars and then they did a Succession Wars to themselves. THEN to escape that they turned to Tricky Nick's Why Not? gambit with no alternative presented. And it was all the Capellans' fault.
>>
>>98804232
so they're double triple super mega failure betrayers.

first they swear to leave in order to NOT devolve into internecine warfare. do it any way, then they worship psycho boy, go back to their first worlds out in the middle of no where and betray harder by conquering them lot, for more internecine warfare they left to avoid doing... then they come and invade the IS for more internecine warfare.

so they're oathbreaking faggots like, what 6 times over?

Banshee 12S
Zeus 11S
Crusader 10S
Axman 5R
Hatchetman 8S
Nightsky 7S

so the ilClan steiners are eating real good mech food...
WHY the flying fuck are they balkanised failed retards then?
are the writers just faggots who jerk off to misery porn fanfic they 'write'?
>>
i mean, think about it, the steiners have all these full clantech production lines up and running, they should be the ilclan version of the FWL during the clan invasion. fucking every man and his dog should be queing up, begging to pay through the nose to buy clantech build quality IS mechs. ESPECIALLY such beloved classics like the crusader. the stieners should be making such bank they can float their entire nation off the back of it.
>>

>>98804790
Having good mechs =/= having good governance
>>
>>98804790
Most other great houses can also make Clantech by 3150s, though Steiners are the only ones that can make cXLFEs. Though I suspect the other houses would rather buy stuff from Sea Foxes, who are at least nominally a neutral party. The states that border the Lyrans are FWL and Dracs, who wouldn't want to fun their enemy, and while Fedsuns have an OK relationship with them they're on the other side of the IS.
>>
>>98804748
They have some goated mech designs but they are all expensive and the Commonwealth barely has an economy rn. They would have zero economy if not for them barely holding it together. That's why they are splintering apart. All I know though is that the Timbuktu bastards can taste my laser for trying to break away from the glorious(but currently poor) Steiner state
>>
Do you have any tips for forcing alpha strike fags to play classic?
>>
>>98804150
I should know such things but lack of mountains fades such knowledge.

I don't care much for running but riding my bicycle, I know cliche we get indoctrinated from birth, while high on oxygen sounds cool. Boosted me, danger to manifold, lol.

Book the table they usually play at before they can every single week.

Swap their AS cards for roster sheets and when they notice conveniently have a hex map ready to play.

Just offer to teach them. Tell them they should try it at least the once so they know what it's like. Most AS players are one of two types: scared of the record sheet, or just really like simple, higher model count fast action. The first type can be converted by showing them it's not as complicated as its memed to be. The second type might be converted if the experience unlocks an interest they didn't know they had. Either way don't make it an AS vs Classic thing because most people are reactionary and will dig their heels in when a line is drawn, but make it more like an opportunity for them to try something that they have never had, because people like novel experiences.

Anyone know of some good ways to get custom map sheets? I want to get some with 1.75" hexes instead of the 1.25" ones sold everywhere. While they match the standard base, that also means the standard base completely covers up information like the level or what terrain they are on. And similarly, 1.75" means I can use some old Heroscape boxes for elevation, which I also feel works better than the Lorescape stuff that's official, because those being the same 1.25" size has a lot of even older minis bumping into taller hills and cliffs.

Take a pdf mapsheet, scale it up, print it at a kinko's (which i think is now FedEx)
>>
so if I theoretically have mechs with different paint schemes can I include them in the same force
>>
>>98806750
Sure. It doesn't have any bearing on gameplay to begin with, but a lot of the iconic schemes are only for parades and formal occasions anyway and they all wear appropriate camouflage on the field. Mixed schemes could just be allied units or mercenaries.
