What are you guys using nowadays to sort & catalogue your collections of miniature shit? I just recently picked up some dude’s old Warmachine collection (pic), and he didn’t have anything beyond a list of names he remembered. So, between this, Warhammer, and D&D I’m just losing track of everything. I would prefer something more structured than just throwing everything into an Excel doc, if possible.

Then you should make a hard stop on any new purchases and start to get a grip again

I think I'd lose my mind cataloguing my like 2000 unpainted miniatures. There's some right gems in there too.

I go to wargames shows and buy cheap stuff a couple of times a year
>>
>>98804239
Getting track of things includes getting an overview of the current collection. That’s the whole point of cataloguing.

>make excel spreadsheeets
>make a spreadsheet to catalogue the spreadsheets
>eventually make a spreadsheet to catalogue the spreadsheet-cataloguing spreadsheets
>say fuck it, it's become a hassle and I'd rather paint a mini instead
>now enjoy the semi-regular surprise great mini I bought years ago then totally forgot about

>What are you guys using nowadays to sort & catalogue your collections of miniature shit?
I have a dollar store notebook I plan to catalogue the loads of paints I own so I hopefully don't accidentally buy extras.
And to also catalogue paint recipes. I am not sure if that counts as miniature stuff but I do use the paints to paint miniatures. I think the notebook will be an upgrade over index cards for paint recipes.
>>
>>98804082
I remember more or less what I have, the trouble is remembering where everything is. So the cataloguin would be more sorting things into labeled boxes than comprising some one big excel sheet of everything.

I'm a bit autistic in that I actually think more of when I bought something rather than what category it belongs to. So basically stuff is more in bags or boxes from "[bring and buy] March 24" and "[wargames show] August 22" etc and I kind of recall what I bought at each event.

To then split them up into Orcs, Undead, Eldar, Stargrave, and add them to my existing boxes etc it kind of gives me this angst I can't explain.
>>
>>98804082
I don't have that many that I'd need to sort and catalogue
>>
What's with the butthurt autist that reposts AI in every thread?
>>
>>98804793
So you do not even consider to assemble or paint those things?
>>
>>98804936
Oh I do, in some ways having just like a random bag with one particular miniature I fancy painting that day in it works better for me than dropping Orc #243 in a box with the rest of the Orcs.

I have a waterproof notebook for divers, it's doing a great job since I can attach the actual paint sequence to the recipe.

I've actually thought about vibe coding something to to that, exactly fit for my purpose. (I'm a software engineer but reached the point that I vibe code every personal app I developed, because life's too short for one user, throwaway software)

I have some reaper and archon Kickstarters around, lots of games agnostic stuff. I want to catalogue something so that, when creating a warband for mini agnostic game I can k ow that I have half a dozen "druid-like" minis, where they are and if they're paint, assembled or in the sprue.

I think what's mostly putting me off it that I actually think an app like would be useful for more people and I could end up making a few $$ on the side with it.
>>
I just stack everything unfinished on a single shelf. Every finished goes onto the rest of the shelves. If I run out of room on the unfinished shelf I stop buying and start painting. If my finished shelves fill up I buy another display cabinet or storage shelves for terrain and such.

... army lists? When you have miniature for playing games there are rules for making armies with them, so that tends to be how you track what things you have. The fuck are you doing buying that and not having any idea of what it is or what you want to do with it?
The fuck is this thread even doing not bringing this up already?
>>

I cataloged my painted Battletech figures by faction and weight class in a text file, but everything else is either in labeled bins, unlabeled bins, or unlabeled shelves.

Firstly some games don't have whole army lists, like skirmish games. Secondly some people just like miniatures for the aesthetics, regardless of any tabletop capabilities their rules infer.
>>
>>98804082
I made Excel spread sheet for my Heroclix collection
not bothering for other minis, enough if sorted by faction
>>
>>98804082
... I dont, but I need to... but I won't...
>>
>>98807141
Firstly its called a warband list at that point. Like the list of your warband you write down on the roster.
Secondly you would know this if you actually played anything.
Thirdly if you're just in it for the aesthetics I am sorry for your loss and hope one day you learn how to play games you can discuss on the traditional games board.

Where's the fun In that?
>Do some major redecorating in the room that was untill recently just used to put stuff in because we want to use it.
>Come across mystery box, well what would be in here
>Armor cast Eldar Warlock/Phantom titan with all the extra parts.
If you safe something you have cool stuff for the future.
>>
>>98810118
For real, I count five finished models (and I'm not certain about two of those).
>>
>>98810160
I just assumed any actually finished models were bought painted.
>>
>>98804756
This is the correct way to go about it.

>I have a waterproof notebook for divers
That is something I didn't expect to hear about.
The plan for me is to first write down all the paints I have as I put them back on the paint racks and then type them out in a text file on my PC.
>>
>>98814280
>That is something I didn't expect to hear about.
I just checked and they seem to be pretty reasonably priced. The "paper" feels like something halfway between actual paper and plastic, writable with a normal pencil, and waterproof means you can actually paint your swatches on without worrying about fucking up the sheet.

Unfortunately anon I'm probably in like the top 10 anons on this board for actually going to events of repute.

You would know that if you ever played anything like Frostgrave or Stargrave that what ends up on the table each game is pretty mutable, so people are likely to need various stuff.

And I disagree, miniature wargames are imperfect games of strategy and have always been about the miniatures and the spectacle first. I'm not some L shaped terrain nu40k neanderthal thinking in terms of "army lists".

>What are you guys using nowadays to sort & catalogue your collections of miniature shit?
~99% of my minis are painted, so I remember all of them.
I don't buy minis that I don't intend to immediately paint, so I don't have a giant collection of useless, money-wasting plastic.

Firstly, I don't post pictures of my minis on here anymore.
They keep getting stolen and ending up on instagram and shit.

Secondly, they're in boxes stacked up to the ceiling, and taking even a fraction of them out takes forever.

I use the BrushRage app to track progress. It gives good overviews for the (customizable) stages of completion.
I don't use most of the other functionalities, beside that and the paint recepies.

You do you, but don't expect anyone to believe you have painted anything.

I use a free app called Memento Database. I play Battletech so I only have around 300 minis. So far I haven't reached any limit where I have to pay for any features. Handy as it lets me sort the list alphabetically for any of the fields so I can quickly find out if I have already bought a particular mini or box set when I'm standing in the shop.
