I know many of you were critical of Pillage, I never played it myself so I can't comment. But yesterday victrix teased an upcoming set of siege equipment for pillage, including siege rams, mantlets and ladders. I think these look great and could be used in many other systems.

NTA.
Most wargaming has narrative tie-in.
Campaigns necessarily do.
Scenarios (historical or not) are again necessarily so.
Pick up games and tournament play don't require it, but it emerges regardless unless you're playing with and as the dullest spoons in the drawer.
Doesn't have to be anything fancy like a map and war diary or whatever but if you're not doing some sort of imagination fun and building that with the game as it unfolds you're really missing out.
That being said, the 'narrative' indie explosion around 2015, the solo covid boom and resulting fallout has made for some total bullshit rules trying to pass themselves off as 'narrative' when they're really just badly written garbage.
>>
>>98809942
There is wargames and what later became modern wargame and RPG.
One focused mostly in the combat while the other mostly in the narrative.
Wargames focused mostly in the combat is a rather a modern thing, but then again few wargames today even mention the concept of a GM.
>>
>>98809446
I agree with you on this. I read through the Pillage book and didn't hate it, siege rules might get me to give it a shot. There's one guy in town who wants people to play it, hopefully he's not a weirdo

>>
>>98810090
"narrative" for wargames is something interpreted through the outcome, it's fluff.
If your scenario is narrated, it's an rpg.

>>
>>98810102
Revisionism like that is so fucking retarded. They're literally called war games, the entirety of their rules have always been about combat, DnD was literally born from wargaming as a consequence of the creator wanting to play more narrative games, and yet you still spew this retarded shit.

I'm 100% sure people like you are essentially just white dwarf battle report readers and not wargamers

>>98810090
No they don't have any tie-in. The narrative of a wargame is you wage war. That's it. The game discussed is called Pillage, the """"narrative""" is entirely contained within the title. That's all the narration that's ever going to be there. A handful of dudes pillaging.

A couple of lines of text to give context to a battle (scenarios, campaign) doesn't have anything to do with what was discussed in the post I replied to, which said:
>I hope pillage doesn't bloat. It's a system written for narrative skirmishes
>>
>>98810783
You fucking retard, Pillage was already based on a narrative scenario-driven skirmish game (middle-earth). Get over yourself.
>>
>>98810783
>narrative
In the context of wargaming, narrative just means you have a string of battles in a campaign where the results and actions of the previous battles affect the next one.
For example, you play a scenario defending a supply train, if the attacker destroys it then the next battle the defender is reduced, or you play a siege next and you don't have the ability to keep reloading your cannons or some shit. Or you have a hero or leader who can be killed, or performs exceptionally well and now gets a leadership bonus or something in the next battles because he is now see by his men as a legendary hero.
"Narrative" wargaming is just playing a campaign with actual outcomes, instead of just playing unrelated one off battles like some random 40k faggots at the LGS

>>
>>98810783
>The narrative of a wargame is you wage war. That's it
The simple minded retardation at work here is impressive.
The game discussed is whatever the fuck we want, not just whatever game has your nuts in a knot. That you can't imagine making note of how the game plays as you do so is pathetic.
>>
>>98810952
99% of pillage rules simulate dudes killing each other, there's only one narrative and it's pillaging, you fucking retard.

>>98810954
No. Narrative means narrative. Campaigns are campaigns. Those two words are not interchangeable.
For the records I've been playing RPGs and wargame campaigns for the past 20 years. A narrative game is a game which has rules which promote stories. I design custom rules and scenario for wargames and campaigns that include NPCs, GM'ing, gaining money during battle and using it to bribe other players (in 1v1v1) or NPCs on the battlefield to trigger various effects and plenty of other mechanic. You need to add a shit ton of those and vary them to generate a narrative through a battle of a wargame that won't always be the same thing 9 times out of 10 because none of them are designed for that.

>>98811471
>The game discussed is whatever the fuck we want
You're so fucking retarded that you legally shouldn't be allowed to talk to another human being. If you can't follow a conversation don't barge in, chessboard shitting pigeon.

>>98811457
>I'm going to say what you said but with different words and think this is an argument against you
>>
>>98811532
>there's only one narrative and it's pillaging
And setting things on fire and dealing with sheep stampedes and bears and escorting monks, all that fit within the context of small petty bands of pillagers. That's what the game is built around and the issue "Siege' presents is the trap that it'll bloat in size like every siege game for MESBG since those were introduced there.

Anyone play Dropzone Commander 3rd edition? Any take aways?
Also, thoughts on Wyland Games quietly acquiring it's way into a mini GW?
>>
>>98811958
Dropzone v3 is definitely better than v2 was, and I've enjoyed the handful of games I've played of it, but I wouldn't recommend anyone get into it for now unless you specifically want one of the starter box factions or have an existing collection. UCM and Bioficers are they the only ones that have new plastics released, and all that's listed for sale at the moment for the rest of the factions are overpriced bundles of old models, which are even worse than would be expected as the kits that used to have multiple build options only come with the one shown in the bundle.

So instead it'll be a deeper level you can delve to if you find the entrance in the dungeon. but the toxic gases and heat emitted by the magma are deadly, and a model loses 1 health each turn it's in one of the caves. On the other hand, top tier treasures down there.

when a gwsg thread dies it tends to take a few days for it to come back, there just isn't that much to discuss on the subject beyond gw's newest release of fomo sloppa, the thread has mostly been kept alive by the ragebaiting of two anons, one pushing the LRB6 for blood bowl, the other pushing necrodamus for necromunda,, the necrodamus guy is a fairly new thing but thats understandable as gw's fomo-reboot of necromunda is very recent still, whereas LRB6 guy has been pissing off the paid shills with his posts for years now.

So yeah, twice the price.
>>
>>98814714
>>98814850
It's a distinct thing I've seen lately. Most games are offering bigger, more expensive starter boxes. I think it's because the minis themselves don't cost much compared to everything that goes into development.

If a box of 24 minis goes for 40, and a box of 60 minis goes for 100, you get a much bigger net on the bigger box, and you've already spent all the money on costs like art and sculpting and such, so the 60 mini box will only be a few bucks more to make. And your customer feels they get more value for the money because they're getting larger collections.

The only issue is it's harder to convince someone to impulse buy for 100 instead of 40...

Anon... here is a lil size comparison between a 28mm figure and a 10mm(*) one. You are NOT going to be playing anything like Mordheim or Necromuda with 10 mil, you might as well just play with empty bases. Skirmish games are not for tiny toys, these little guys are for big formations with lots of small dudes on each stand. Can't even put grass tufts on the bases those will obscure the figures.

(*) technically it's an N-gauge figure which I'm to understand is very similar to 10mm
>>
>>98814582
>>98815538
28mm games are perfectly serviceable at 15mm scale and you can either scale down the play area to match which is very convenient or use the regular size play area and get a much "larger" game out of it without having to put a garage of tables together.

>>98814582
15mm is doable and there are even some prints already out there for it
>>
>>98814582
I've done various games with chits on magnets and drawn maps. Main this is figuring out which rule set scales from inches to cm easily. You can do this with basically anything. 6mm, 10mm, whatever.
>>
>>98815538
Really depends on how able to control your fat fingers you are, what size you make the bases, how flexible your measuring tools are and how much you worry about exact ranges.
Smaller scale is more well suited to mass battles and abstract strategic but you can do a variety of things with it.
>>
File: img_20200328_142243.jpg (899 KB, 3118x2337)
899 KB JPG
>>98815685
Yeah, I can see 10mm with magnets or with leaded bases, especially if the minis are plastic or resin. 10mm is just way too small otherwise. A small gust could blow over most 10mm miniatures if they aren't in lines/groups.
>>
>>98815569
A while back I was talking to someone about playing Bolt Action using 6mm minis. He wanted to change the ranges to account for the scale and I pointed out that since BA massively compresses the ranges for gameplay's sake, shrinking minis without changing numbers just makes it more realistic.

He ended up playing a game actually designed for 6mm play instead.
>>
yea I can see 10mm cm mordheim would be a challenge, with using something like 10mm bases and moving that around
>>
>>98815835
I don't really see the advantage to it, since what 10mm terrain exists doesn't really suit Mordheim or its ilk. Is the goal a very small play area?
>>
>>98815753
>He ended up playing a game actually designed for 6mm play instead.
This is likely the better choice. I have used cm conversions when space is limited or as an experiment more than converting scale for its own sake.
>>98815735
How much gaming outdoors are you doing?
I haven't messed with 15mm, but 10mm and 6mm tend to have quite stable bases without even having to get to magnets. I have seen people use flat washers or pennies for extra though if round basing is an option.
>>
>>98815858
yes smaller play area, and I like small models
>>
>>98815699
Does this box flip over to be the battlefield? does it contain a rules book, dice, the minis, the terrain, measuring tools, etc...? I'd like to see the whole project if so, I did that for blood bowl at 15mm
>>
>>98815753
I will not help you turn this into /hwg/ fuck off.
>>
>>98815879
Not mine, saw it here a while ago. iirc it has the minis but not the book in the case. I'd be hesitant to put dice in there, they'll rattle around and bump the models.
The other side was the battlefield yes.
Trying to make portable wargames is an interesting project for sure, its why I saved that picture.
I ended up shifting to a portable painter's box for small game stuff. They tend to have enough space for a few books, dice and bits but still keep it fairly light.
>>
>>98815872
nta
I think they're right in that the vertical and getting into partially ruined buildings will be challenging at 10mm. Not impossible but for sure harder to pull off. Its overly fiddly but we're already into small scale so you could pattern out the building floor and layer it with adhesive magnet sheet so the bases have a bit more stability to them.

Bingo: it's exactly the matter at hand. They give you more useless crap just so they can jump up the price. It's not criminal per se but in this economy it's a borderline suicidal move.

I want to like this game but I don't have any faith in this "more models so more expensive boxes" pricing policy. By this logic you can already tell the rules will be unbalanced as fuck just so they can churn out new specialist units at a premium. It's all about getting the factories running at full speed.

But if I wanted James Workslop selling strategies I'd go with James Workslop. At least he's popular.
>>
What other games besides rank and files games like fantasy regiments, old world would be good to scale down to replace inches with cm directly
>>
>>98816172
Pretty much any 28mm platoon or up scale game can happily go down to 10 or 15mm and swap inches for cm. It's easiest if the rules allow multi-basing, but not crucial.

Yes, you're going to hate it but pretty much all historical communities are normal well adjusted adult white guys with stable jobs and families. For some fortunate reason, the social outcast LGS/Warhammer type find history to be repellent.
It should come as no surprise that the average history enjoyer is more of a well adjusted normie than the average "nerd"

My local historical community is dominated by a guy whose stance is "who cares if it's accurate, we're just here to roll dice and have fun", which I find incomprehensible because at that point why bother making it history themed? Could easily make a more fun game by adding speculative stuff

I have seen many many "After Action Reports" written for historical and sci-fi wargames. 40K and BPRE are very narrative heavy settings, and there is a bunch of lore in their books and explainations about what is happening and why. Tons of Wargames have you make your own armies or they have campaign rules.

Some wargames have side rules for RPG stuff and some RPGs have wargame rules on the side. A lot of both are set in the third world, cyberpunk, near present, or historical.

I consider getting the Greathelm ruleset, as the quickstart ones are nice. Can anyone tell me what do the full rules contain and whether or not they're worth the money?

>Too Fat Lardies initiative/action system.

>>
>>98819110
The concept of only having the actions available allowed by the result of the action dice pool.
First place I saw that was "What a Tanker!" by TFL. They did "What a Cowboy!" too, with a similar system. Greathelm is kinda storebrand "not-What a Knight!" essentially.
I'm not sold on its use in Greathelm, but I don't hate it either. But I've only had a few games.

I like it. The main thing that the full rules have that the quickstart ones do not is scenarios, which in greathelm are made of 2 or more mini-scenarios called Scenes. There's also more developed choices for weapons, lighter armor, etc.

Cheapest way to get them is to subscribe to the dev's patreon for one month. That also gets you the Realm Campaign rules, which are a surprisingly developed map campaign system.

>scale seem to go from 1:35 to 1:72, no middle ground
huh neat. 1:35 tends to be a bit chunky for 28mm imo but its a small vehicle and already goofy enough it'll work great as a scifi wunderwaffe.
>>
>>98820321
Or buy some wood artist panels and hinge them together for a larger board.
>>
>>98820395

That's the reason, with a lot of effort (the sprues seemed to be full of fiddly bits) it would look right next to stargrave automata and the like. Another candidate is the Wiesel, as it's also a small armoured vehicle available in 1:35 and it is not as immediately recognizable like a t-72 or an Abrams.
>>
>>98820476
These ones come with the magnetic base so it saves steps of having to put in your own magnetic sheet. But it does tend to fix board size to premades. Depends on what part of the crafting angle you're into I suppose. There's an appeal to taking existing things and making them work with minimal modifications but if you're getting into basic wood crafts making the frame and whatever size works for you isn't a big jump from hinges.

Anyone else find it curious how the British are always portrayed in pop culture media as the main character in history, yet it seems like there is no other major imperial power in history whose story is so rife with the most retarded and incompetent blunders imaginable?

Viktor battlesuit. The gay 3rd edition (UWZ) name for the updated vulkan battlesuits turned into a "mk 2" after 2nd edition collapse of the game. PA has a recent restock of Viktor battlesuits but those disappeared like hot cakes. Also thanks to Warzone Eternal all the jack holes on ePay have tripled their warzone mini prices, and since battlesuits are very rare on top of that, you're most likely to get some jackhole pricing an unopened box of battlesuits at $300 or such. slightly unrelated but do you guys have any idea why the hell most 40k players will act all belligerent and dismissive when people suggest playing OPR or Xenos Rampant or the million other rulesets that can work as alternative 40k rulesets instead of official 40k rules? This is despite the fact that they are constantly complaining about official 40k rules.
>>
>>98825502
Sunken cost fallacy. Explains most of it.
Some 40k players are just waacfags that would rather play videogames, but suck so much ass at them that they turn to wargames where they can cheat more easily.
>>
>>98825621
>sunken cost fallacy
But the sunken cost mostly applies to miniatures, considering that 40k players are all too happy to never use their expensive rulebooks again every three years. You can use the same miniatures across multiple systems. It just doesn't add up to me, like I cannot understand their PoV.
>>
>>98825502

Because they're 40k players, not wargamers. You see something similar with fantasy players, some of whom get rather defensive if you criticise their janky and arbitrary ruleset. "It's fantasy, it doesn't have to make sense".
To be fair, we can also be really annoying elitist cunts.
>>
>>98825654
My bad, the sunken cost goes way deeper than just models in the 40kfag. The modern 40k player is so retarded, that they really think you can't play the blue marines rules, because you painted your marines black.
Some honestly think they can't play something else unless they get exclusive models for it.

Worst part I'm starting to see it in Specialist games too. Oh Necromunda has some issues. Instead of using the house rules or alternative rules to fix the one issue the group has with the game. Immediately drop it for the new edition and proceed to bitch and moan about not having proper rules for their X gang.
The entire thing is like dealing with a class full of retarded children that can't stop looking at the shinny new ball
>>
These 40k players are stuck on james' plantation, simple as. Only use their models, only use their paint, only use their snippers, only use their glue, only use their brushes, only use their dice. Can only play the current rules or stop, can't play older editions that they and their community actually like. Warhammer fantasy replaced by slopmar? Just keep playing with your friends and peers? Nah sperg out and set your army on fire or smash it up. Unpainted armies, mechs without their arms, tanks without their turrets, don't take things you like you never know when x or y will get nerfed/buffed. L shaped ruins slop terrain, objectives are just circles put down x inches away from y or z. There is no casual play because everything is down stream from waac tournie players who constantly cheat and cheese.

Because I don't want to use your smoothbrain rules, gw has gotten worse by dumbing down HH, why the fuck would I switch to a system that makes that *worse*?
And all you niggers cheerleading for this by saying "oh you don't need special rules to differentiate your armies, one unit is exactly the same as an other", why not just play chess then?
OPR and its ilk are a gateway to the situation we find ourselves in now where the fucking historicals have escaped their containment thread and now want us all to paint 3000 6mm musketeers we can push round with little sticks.
>>
>>98825797
It was very funny watching Vince Venturella's recent video on the newest "tone pro" citadel paints and seeing him get utterly flabbergasted by influencers posting shorts and videos of how it's self-leveling as if it's some sort of new miracle paint. "Self-leveling paint has been industry standard for a long time at this point, every other company has self-leveling paints, I am not going to glob a bunch of paint on this model just to show you that, it'd be stupid." Meanwhile the GW goblins are chimping out about GW playing catchup like it's the Second Coming. They are nice pigments, though, just shitty pots and overpriced.
>>
>>98826122
>utterly flabbergasted
My honest reaction to every new GW model.
Not because they look bad or anything, but because they are not models for a wargame too much crap and in odd poses nor proper display model like a scale kit parts in the sprue are placed at random and with no consideration about how the product will look once assemble. Like massive joints over muscle

Having to jump through multiple hoops and rolling multiple sets of dice for a single action isn't good game design in my opinion. I like to focus more on tactics, maneuver and command friction. Not memorising the ins and outs of the intricacies of the opposing army. A set of generic profiles with a wide variety of universal special rules upgrades is good enough for me.
>>
>>98826300
I think command friction is a good mechanic, and it's something I liked about Oathmark, which is more associated with historicals.
>>
>>98826305

Yeah, I think it's cool that units don't always do what you want them to do.
>>
>>98826314
This is why LGS owners kick people who don't play Warhammer out, because you're all fucking freaks who are into weird shit like this.
>>
>>98826333

Even TOW has some command friction, like frenzied and impetuous units, even if their rules are implemented a bit differently.
>>
>>98826333
Literally no lgs does that.
>>
>>98824931
I solo played it to learn the rules and found it flowed really well, even with one person playing both sides (designing 3 plans for each side each turn then dicing to see which they followed). But I havnt branched into the more advanced rules yet.

Their thread died. There were probably less than 10 regular posters.
You are entirely correct about differentiation and customizing things to one's own preference being a big part of the whole idea. GW's bit is finding ways to monetize that interest to the detriment of the game. Even historical guys, or perhaps especially historical guys, can be very particular about the specifics of various units, equipment and vehicle variants in different time periods, theatres and such.
I don't particularly need rules for 12 different kinds of hyperphasepulse blasters but having 3-5 and another half dozen different things from there gives variety over time. A lot of the current rules lite hyper abstraction is for games no one really intends the audience to play more than a dozen times so it doesn't matter as much there's less options.

The era's a bit off because DA is post ACW but the guy in charge of the Feds going out to stomp the mormons ended up being a reb so there's easy tie in there.
Running various local tribes as skin walkers taking advantage of the situation would work well too given how local indian alliances were to the mission. Could do early ACW tensions with the later day saints guy, forget his name, trying to influence the conflict, some bandits just trying to make a buck, some pinkertons. That's 6 warbands, throw in the arbitrator's weird west monsters and you've got the fall/winter's campaign for this year.

It goes on for longer, obviously, and the first two turns are pretty bloody with so much dakka getting thrown about, but as holes open up in your line, mechs become damaged, and scoring becomes necessary/possible your decisions end up carrying much more weight than when there are only a couple guys around. You get a little bit more forgivness for mistakes when you have lots of models but getting ganged up on is a LOT easier.
>>

I didn't mind a lot of the wackier designs in Warzone - quite the opposite - but the Hurricane just threw me straight out. What is it about historical gaming that causes fa/tg/uys to seethe? In my experience the historical community has always been the most chill and welcoming out of any "traditional games" tabletop community and the most "normal," with Warhammer being on the opposite end of the spectrum

Counting or not counting rivet-counter violence?
That aside, the biggest issue with /hwg/ (like with most of /tg/) is that pretty much none of the regulars are actual wargamers, just nogame armchair historians and generals, so there's very little productive discussion outside of memes and trolling. Now that they've scared all of the other fags away and barely have enough people for a general, they come as refugees, hoping to do it all over again here.
Many fags in /awg/ are also nogames who spend the day shitting the thread, so they feel threatened by the new kids in the block coming to leave this thread like your average Indian street. This means our shitposters are also putting more effort in shitting the thread, so at the end of the day, the quality of the general takes a nosedive in both fronts.

It took me a bit to get used to how swingy it is, but eventually i realized the reason for that is that swinginess is necessary to avoid snowballing. Your knight with a magic sword and magic armor isn't that much of a problem if he still goes down to a lucky thief sticking a dagger in his armpit.

Well ten years ago we had plenty of battle reports, devs sharing their wip rules and painting projects. That's all gone and it just ended with the closeted post physique/anti-Bong shitposter being responsible for 90% of traffic.
>>
>>98829618
I'll never forget the time I talked about my passion to do an anglo-afghan project and some anon, a geologist in Montana, sent me a box full of hundreds of metal vintage Anglo afghan minis that he had laying around, completely for free.
That's the /hwg/ I used to know. We used to have monthly painting projects, an exclusive secret Santa separate from the /wip/ one exclusively for grogs. But the best part of old /hwg/ was that the general was full of true grognards, who could answer any questions about any obscure military conflict and prattle on about specific tactics and drill, and who knew a mini manufacturer and ruleset for literally anything you asked for. It was an actual repository of knowledge and experience.
Genuinely I don't know what happened to 4chan as a whole, not just /hwg/, but trolling isn't the root cause. Trolls and shitpost have always been here and everyone tolerated it because next to the knowledge and passion of the posters the trolling made it all fun.
Nowadays it's missing the knowledge and experience and passion, it's just the trolls.

I see the trolls often mock /hwg/ and historicals in general for dying, but the truth is that all of /tg/ is dying in the same manner, /hwg/ has always been smaller so it's just on a faster timeline, everyone else is only a year or two behind /hwg/. Compare /awg/ with how it was 2-3 years ago and it's shocking. Compare it will 10 years ago and you will weep

>Nowadays it's missing the knowledge and experience
That's pretty much it, most of the people that made this place interesting either aged out of 4chan, found better hobby spaces or outright got fed up with the vibes in here.
4chan has been getting enshittified for over a decade now, in good part due to it becoming the defacto platform for outcasts and also gaining fame as le edgy racism platform, which attracted undesirables and trolls like flies to warm shit.
Many cool projects were born in here, but people don't really want to carry the reputation of being the 4chinz game designer when selling their project, nor do they want the constant negativity and low effort posting of nogames anons just trying to bring everyone else down to their level.
Hell, back in the day I spent time cleaning pdfs, artfagging and homebrewing out of sheer enjoyment of the community and comfy vibes; nowadays I rarely post more than twice a week and close the tab as soon as I see the same stale bait and pointless bickering.
It's sad, but the best we can do is keeping our hobby alive, playing lots of games and enjoying on our own slaves, with our own groups.

The trouble is, I don't know where else to go. Where else can you post your stuff and have a decent /tg/ community where people engage with you and discussions with a modicum of free speech? I certainly would have left 4chan by now if I knew where else to go.
I've tried Facebook, but it's all boomers posting meaningless "looks great!" comments and you have to post under your own name and face. Reddit similarly doesn't have meaningful conversations, and anything less than toxic positivity gets you banned or censored.
