It's a common meme that on D&D, money stops being a PC interest once they buy their Plate Armor (thats why they had to tie it to XP)But I think it can be extended to other games and even genres. Are there any rpgs where being super rich makes the actual game more fun/interesting?
>>98809422Traveller has the merchant prince, trillion credit squadron, and dynasty rules that make extreme wealth have a gameplay.Depending on how you play ACKS, similar retroclones, and older DnD where you have domains have expenditures for wealthy characters in relation to domain ownership (armies, castles etc)
>>98809422Just get into castle building and you will want hundreds of thousands of gold.
>>98809422>cyberpunk, theres always more tech you can buy and theres always someone richer with better/more tech for you to fight.>battletech, owning a planet is just the start.>D&D, wish spells.>
>>98809486>building a Great Wall around my entire domain
I can imagine only the most extreme murderhobos to be fine with going around decked in magic shit for thousands of gold, and then sleep in a ranchy tavern instead of building their own place.
>>98809422I don't agree. During our Avernus campaign, we were constantly struggling with money. Upgrading and enchanting equipment is costly. Magic items are costly. Also your weapons can break and you can also lose equipment (read about Rust Monsters). Others also stole our money.
You get to do this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULeDlxa3gyc
>>98809926For a man from such an upper middle class background Enfield is great at playing lower class characters.
>>98809469>older DnD where you have domains have expenditures for wealthy characters in relation to domain ownership (armies, castles etc)First decade D&D doesn’t have domain play, that’s just a meme, 3e and 5e have way more support for running a domain. AD&D says that you have to build a keep in order to get your 9th or 10th level class feature (which includes mercenaries and income, neither if which ought to be based on class features) but it doesn’t tell you anything about how you’re supposed to play the game while your character is running a keep.
>>988099861e absolutely had domain play.
>>98809986Both 1e and BECMI have domain play. Perhaps not to the level that Birthright later did but the rules were there.
>on D&D
>>98809986>5e has way more support for running a domainWhat, the shitty Matt Colville ripoff they only made after more than a decade of this edition being out? Or do you mean that since the DM is already responsible for doing everything to entertain the players, he by necessity also had to have figured out domain play on if the players cared since the books have nothing for it, and thus 5e always had support for it?Just because it listed the cost of wagons and ships and shit doesn't mean there were any rules whatsoever for actually handling domains, Anon, nor that they were more than the vibes-based bullshit that most of the 5e books involve for their rules
>>98809422>money stops being a PC interestwealth should be possible only at levels 18 to 20, all the rest should not be "you found a ton of wealth you do not need nor can really use properly"
>>98809422>I think this meme that is nonsense can be extended to other dumb bullshit lol okay giver bud.
>>98809422>thing that is literally not true in DnDyou using AI to make these threads? DnD is run by a DM. You know, the guy describing the things and deciding what is there for the players to see and find and fight? So tell your AI chatbot that a DM can just invent this for players to buy. They can buy ships, taverns, castles, islands, kingdoms. They can pay off a guy's gambling debts. They can bribe a dragon. They can invest in mercenaries and infrastructure to defend a town against an invasion. They can pay to repair an orphanage and fund the wellbeing of the orphans there, get little timmy magic books and a scholarship to the rich kids wizards school because he's got potential and he wants to make the world a better place for other orphan kids. Or give them a giant sword that costs money to swing but does crazy damage. If you're boring. Fucking fake thread.
>>98809894It is true that in D&D, the wizard has some built-in money sinks when creating magic items, but even that marginal cases become cheap at higher levels. >>98809486>>98811734Yes, I know there are expensive shit at the equipment list, but those don't feel integrated in the game. The moment you start buying a castle, or shit like an expensive hooker or tattoo, it feels like you are doing a halt on the real game to play pretend for a while, with no real impact on the game itself. Even shit like buying a galley to reach a far away dungeon feels more like a tax than a feat of the game. Maybe its just me who feels it this way. Im not saying that spending money is imposible in D&D but I was wondering if there is another game in which it "matters more".>>98809517>cyberpunk, theres always more tech you can buy and theres always someone richer with better/more tech for you to fight.True. Playing shadowrun I remember having more craving for nu-yens thinking on upgrades; but never felt the same when playing D&D. >>98809986>but it doesn’t tell you anything about how you’re supposed to play the game while your character is running a keep.spot on.
>>98809422>Never game thread>AI slop image>Pointless question about tertiary concerns of theorycrafters and memelordsWhat a great time to live in!
>>98809422This is a GMing problem, not a game world or game system problem. GMs that ignore living costs for their players, yet shower them in rewards will end up in the situation you describe. Everyone else won't.
>>98809422We just added in a simple durability system.
>>98809469ACKS is shilled by a very small group that got banned from reddit. Bringing it up here basically pins you as one of those reddit rejects, considering something like only a few hundred people in the entire world bought the game.
>>98809422I dunno man. Between rare spell materials, crafting, maintaining our airship, and paying our cohorts, we are always short on cash. And time, but that's another concern. There are so may magic items my character could use if we had the funds. I have a shopping list and everything. And that's because we craft most of our shit, meaning that we pay half the gold value.I think the last thing of note I asked our crafting specialist to make my character was a Belt of Battle.
>>98812846Didn't mean to press enter, oops. Was gonna end saying that if money was of no concern, we'd all be walking around with Starmantle Cloaks, which at our levels is not nearly as disruptive as it would have been 5, 6 levels earlier, but it's still a banging item, specially when you can still put other effects on it as per the MiC.
>>98811875>The moment you start buying a castle, or shit like an expensive hooker or tattoo, it feels like you are doing a halt on the real game to play pretend for a whileno gamers really say shit like this completely clueless how retarded it is. About fucking DnD.
>>98809422>Are there any rpgs where being super rich makes the actual game more fun/interesting?Cyberpunk where you start to be able to afford goodies from Maximum Metal splatbook.
>>98809422Wealth 5 and Contacts 5 in Scion used to provide all manner of things.
>>98812632Sup Fishfag, how are you doing, nice to see you outside of your containment thread. It's relevant in this context due to domain play, and gold sinks, and I thought you had us all filtered.
>>98812289It really is great, though, because quests are gone!
>>98809986There weren't any real rules because were suppose to actually start playing a real wargame once you got a keep. You switch back to D&D when you "zoom in", but otherwise, it's wargame time. You know. That whole point of OD&D and why you had to have Chainmail rules to fully play it.
>>98815132Unironicly: Yes, /tg/ was at its worst when quest spam was the majority of the catalog.Litterally stopped using the bord until the split.
>>98812289Whiny bitches. Go to a general.
>>98817053Okay, so tell >>98812289 it's actually great here, since nevergames, AI slop, and pointless questions are so awesome to have.
>>98811875>It is true that in D&D, the wizard has some built-in money sinks when creating magic items, but even that marginal cases become cheap at higher levels. That's simply because they don't really need to invest any money in weapons or armor. A wizard doesn't really need a sword worth 5k gold as much as a fighter does
>>98817574Reminds me of those few months after /vr/ and /vg/ got created and literally had no idea what to post aside from "Fuckin GAMESTOP!" and Bad Dragon Unboxing threads because everyone who ACTUALLY wanted to discuss video games got quarantined.
>>98809894>Sir, what can I do with my money?>Buy weapons!>And what else...?>Buy ehmn magical weapons!DnD is truly a brain virus that turns the host into a retard.
>>98812846>aintaining our airshipUpdate. The wizard now has a keep-mage tower thing.Eventually it will probably become a source of funds, but for now it'll be yet another money sink.Fuck.Good thing my guy doesn't depend on magic items as much, but I still had some cool shit I wanted him to have.
>>98809422OD&D structured this by making treasure the primary progression system until you unlocked building a demense, where everything was walled behind massive pricetags. You're encouraged to keep a massive hoard because its going to get spent on some cool ass shit.>have I ever got there during organic play?no, not even close>does the mere knowledge of its existence make me want gold?YES
>>98816546>There weren't any real rules because were suppose to actually start playing a real wargame once you got a keep. That isn’t domain play (and is also a modern “theory” not supported by designer comments or rules text; AD&D and BECMI never tell you to use Chainmail).Companion was explicitly about domain management, but if you learned from memes you wouldn’t know that, you would just act like B/X had domain play and modern D&D didn’t.
>>98809894>Upgrading and enchanting equipment is costly. Most editions (3.x and 4e being the exceptions) leave the prices undefined and for the DM to figure out. In some campaigns, enchantments may be expensive. When they more than expensive, i.e. priceless, what do you do with the money? An interesting question to which /tg/ answers, blame the system for making me think.
Reading OP’s posts makes me think he just wants to play 3e (or diablo), like he just wants to spend his money on his chatacter. OP, have you tried 3e?
