Why did you stop playing 5e?
>>98813421If you wanna be with the cool kids who stopped playing 5e you have to play games in the first place.
>>98813421Because retards kept telling me "just rewrite what you don't like" when I raised concerns about its faults.
>>98813421Because I left the group that played 5e (online) And I am now more curious for a "universal system." I know of GURPS, Genesys, BRP core/BRP classic and I think Mini Six is also a universal system.Haven't found anybody willing to try those.
>>98813421Because it got invaded and thus, infested/infected by foids, faggots, niggers, browns, they/thems, mental defectives and retards. This is just referring to the 'people' who work at WoTC and make the fucking game...Don't get me started on the player base...
>>98813421Because ive got better stuff to play, when my kid is old enough ill run her first games with it, babys first rpg and all.
>>98813421Because it was absolute shit from the ground up. Why else?
>>98813421The game was boring and unbalanced and additions were making it worse. I actually stopped playing before Critical Reddit gave it incurable AIDS.
>>98815143Anon I haven't seen a TTRPG I liked enough to not hack into pieces to fit what I actually want from it. You're never going to find one, it's a mythical unicorn. DnD is the shitty baseline people are familiar with so if you do hack shit together that works to your advantage. It's the fucking plain white rice. Of course you gotta add salt to it at least.
>>98815292This but mostly unironically, on top of critical roll. 5e is very functional to the point of being kinda boring and '''''rules lite''''', to the point of why not just freeform RP? And it also kinda makes me hate 4th SLIGHTLY less just because everything people pretended to hate about 4th when it came out, is the same shit people say they love about 5th.
>>98813421Because I'm more into CoC and VtM vibes atm. Also too much combat.
>>98815396>Anon I haven't seen a TTRPG I liked enough to not hack into pieces to fit what I actually want from it. OK but I have.
>>98815292Does not, and has never, played games.>>98815455Ditto
>>98813421I found someone to play 3.5e with
>>98813421I don't like running it, and the GM who usually runs it wanted to run CoC.
Our group tried PF2e because a player found a module he wanted to run.We switched from D&D and never looked back.
>>98813421Perhaps the worst system to GM for. DnD (and derivatives such as Pathfinder) attracts god-awful players who either only care about min-maxed builds or are Critical Role fans which are somehow even worse. No one cares about the effort that goes into the world or story, just how cool their isekai protagonist is. The good players are taken, and probably more willing to try other systems. A "friend" I had for over a decade ghosted me because I said I was done GMing DnD and Pathfinder.I am so fucking tired bros.
>>98815531>OK but I have. The irony of having such low standards but being strict about the standards you do have. Or is this a case of you wanting something that will hold your hand more?
>>98815455You can't have a nuanced opinion of 5E's flaws, you'll make the tourists feel insecure that their performative hate doesn't make them fit in!And think of the culture shitposters, you can't just acknowledge them but then give an explanation of 5e that predates their culture war, they make that shit their entire personality and you're acting like it's the least interesting thing to talk about! How could you be so inconsiderate.
>>98815871It's called not wanting to waste energy I don't have to. A system I can make a handful of changes to and get what I want is better than a piece of shit I have to rip apart at the seams.
>>98815816>The good players are takenthis is the actual problem you're having. Everything else would exist if you replaced DnD with something better. It's mostly just new player shit. The majority of people play with the same group they've played with for years. that's where the good players are. Most games like it sounds like you play are intentionally meant for new players who don't have their own regulars groups. Even the critical role shit is just people with no reference for the games besides that show playing games for the first time. They get over that shit or they get bored because it's not fun.
>>98813421Honestly? I was in a long-term 5e group from 2015-2021 or so. Mostly stopped playing with my long-term group because of covid. We did play online for like a year after, but we kinda stopped near the end of 2021. I had a pretty solid in-person group at a Game store that I actually really enjoyed it. There's other factors too, I've played 5e here and there since but like, not super often. There's just other systems that are way way way better.>>98815292Oh yeah that's part of it too. 5e attracts the worst kind of people. I've been in this shit since the late 90s. No Matter what some of the people on this board claim, I never once came across anyone who was left-wing or even talked about politics. And I was living in fucking New York City.
>>98815978I've always played with left wing players but there's a difference between left wing and performative puritan cunts.
>>98815992mostly that the later don't even play these games. And I mean as an actual hobby. If you actually land a game with anyone like that then they or the game won't last, and they won't play again. That shit isn't sustainable in a real social setting. It only works on informal social media interactions. People that insufferable don't even enjoy each others company enough to keep it.
>>98813421I actually just started playing it. After a 10 or so year long hiatus from D&D (last edition I played was 3.5)I came back in full force. Tomorrow is my fourth session. Everything seems to be working just fine, I even had a PC death at the third session. I think most people hating 5e do it just because the internet told them to and probably never played the game and most certainly never read the rules.
>>98816033That's literally it. It's the mcdonalds on every corner. No one is actually pretending it's the greatest food in the world, but it's convenient and it's there and it's fine. Threads like this are performative, from people who haven't even played DnD before. They want to fit into (4chan board) by hating (popular thing) among (board topic). shallow and empty.
>>98816033It's innofensivly competent to the point its boring and character creation is VERY cookie-cutter to the point of being boring. The issues come up when you want to do something not in one of the 10 whole rules that 5th has. For example, I want to play a wrestler/grappler. In 5th, congrats, your playing a shitty fighter subclass that deals no damage and just 1 for 1 trades in combat by reducing his own and another target's movement speed to 0. 3rd/pathfinder had a whole subset of rules for this to make it useful and cool, as well as multiple class options. You could also actually deal damage doing this as well. So long as you play within its limited confines 5th is fine, but i like to have more options.
>>98816120Long lists of character options are playoid masturbation material. 3.5 was my main game for 8 years and I am never going back to that shit. 5e has multiclassing and subclasses and personally I think that that's more than enough. Plus the fact that you can't make a half-minotaur that specialises in headbutting is hardly a criticism IMHO. There are enough ridiculous shit in the game as is. Some things just are outside its scope. You want some actually valid criticism for 5e? The art is atrocious. It actually makes me not want to play the game half of the time. It is especially bad in the PH. The DMG and the MM are better but far from good.
>>98816178>I think that that's more than enough. I don't and I never will.
>>98816178>5e has multiclassingSo did other editions. Multiclassing is for faggots and minmaxing faggots anyway. >Some things just are outside its scope. This is my issue; its scope is comparatively very limited.
>>988134214chan told me too, daddy.
>>98816120Eh, it's bland and flavorless but other people have made good enough expansions that you can usually find something that can incorporate into a setting without technically doing homebrewing. I know I've seen good subclasses from unofficial material for exactly what you described for a wrestler. You have multiple options to choose for that, some subclasses of fighter, others of monk, and others of unofficial classes.Yeah DnD is basic, but the problem of it being basic has been solved a thousand times over by other people who played it and thought it was basic. So use the shit they made.
What I do not like about fifth is how they homogenized everything. The classes have nothing special anymore, by your 3 or 5 first level every classes can teleport, cast spells, and have all sorts of stupid powers that mechanically adds nothing. It really is just like syndrome said in the Incredibles movie, when everybody is super, no one is.And the spells have become one of the most boring shit ever, they are basically just what flavor of Xd8 do you want. And I say that as someone who played regularly 5th for the last 8 years and still play today.I recently started playing a second game in a low fantasy setting using the hero system with a super motivated gm and man it is a breath of fresh air
>>98816315>I recently started playing a second game in a low fantasy setting using the hero system with a super motivated gm and man it is a breath of fresh airA friend is GMing Shadowdark and the campaign is set in a world reminiscent of the tech of the 1600s (early matchlocks that kind of thing) Holy FUCK, breath of fresh air is the best way to describe it.
>>98815455>critical rollThey really don't get enough hate. I trace the true downfall of DnD to when they came on the scene.
>>98816315sounds like you're playing in some groups who don't read the books if that's your take. The spells only look like different flavors of d8 damage because you're playing with retards who ignore most of the spellbook outside of what does the highest damage. And most likely they're playing sorcerer. And everyone teleporting at level 5? Even with shit like misty step that's no more than 3 classes with extreme limits. Like that is your emergency item as a wizard, you're not wasting a second level spell slot, at level 5, to teleport around.
>>98813421Our forever 5e gm ended his campaign.I only host genesys/ffgsw, and the other guy that once dm'd one 5e session seems to have gotten traumatized from the experience.
>>98816345Fake shit. They game is no worse or better than it was before them. It was less mainstream before them. If they weren't around you wouldn't get better players you'd just have fewer players. Because they don't warp anyone's minds, they just set bad expectations for new players, they either get over that or get bored of playing. Fuck you fake fags with this performative "oh we were in a golden era before the fire nation attacked" bullshit. for a fucking podcast.
>>98816300I have still not seen a single non-bounded accuracy conversion, or a single Tome of Battle conversion that didn't neuter every class involved.
>>98816370If it was only one campaign then they're not a forever GM, usually with that term people mean that they have run more than one game and never get to play in games. Not that they ran one really long game.
>>98816379Struck a nerve huh Matt?>It was less mainstream before them.Attempting to refute me while proving my exact point.
>>98816393Yes. I, Matt Mercer, have taken time out of nesting on my fat stacks of cash to come here to your favorite social media website to speak to you, personally. What questions do you have for me schizo-chan?
>>98816415>Can't even register an ounce of sarcasm>Calls me the schizo
>>98816345I mean... Why would I give them hate for killing D&Dogshit? Fuck yeah, Critical Roll! Matt Mercer is my king. He slew the dragon.
>>98815396Rewriting what I didn't like resulted in something that isn't D&D.D&D isn't plain white rice, it's a pile of already-digested rice people insist is still edible.
>>98816424>Why would I give them hate for killing D&Dogshit?Because they were the ones that pointed normies towards the hobby to begin with. They're the ones that made the theater kid playstyle sacrosanct amongst the player base.
>>98816393>mainstream bad for reasonsas I said, you're a retard who is mad about playing with new players, but that's because you're also a new player. You don't remember shit before CR got big, or else you wouldn't be dealing with the chaff they created. So make up your mind, are you a newfag or are you upset about people you don't interact with?
>>98816427>Rewriting what I didn't like resulted in something that isn't D&D.retarded takeadding salt to my food doesn't make it stop being the same food. Putting condiments on a burger doesn't make it not a burger. If your GM makes bland food bring some hot sauce.
>>98816453>mainstream bad for reasonsYes. Being mainstream is fucking terrible. It attracts dogshit players and lunatic leftists who have poisoned and destroyed the hobby. Gatekeeping is absolutely paramount. That's why OSR has exploded because it's the last real 'casual filter' left. No one wants to play with theater kids who spend the session just larping without rolling a single die. Fuck off and die normie. Here's your last (you).
>>98816450>wizard>defined by their study of magic>limiting themselves to one exclusive form of only elemental magicYou got the wrong place bub. sorcerer's guild is two doors down.
>>98816439I don't give a shit about that. D&D has to die for the hobby to breath free. If Matt Mercer dealt a blow to it, whether he meant to or not, then he is unambiguously the protagonist of this story. ALL HAIL KING MERCER!
>>98816476>lunatic leftists destroying western society one niche hobby at a time! so you chose newfag nogamer but with the /pol/ subclass.
>>98816482>shitposter gets angry at things>gets made fun of>vagueposts to claim victoryat least be more interesting.
>>98816480Your logic is sound I guess. I still think D&D could've been reformed with the right leadership.
>>98816470I'd rather just make what I want from the start.Once again, your food analogy falls flat, because you're insisting shit is edible and insisting others eat it just because you enjoy it.
>>98816512>I'd rather just make what I want from the start.Alright then do that. My first games were with people literally doing that. I didn't play DnD until like 8 years in. And then only as a one-shot. My first games were people hacking together various homebrews. If you "might as well" make something from fucking scratch, go right ahead. Then eventually you'll realize how retarded threads like these are when you're back from a campaign made from the stitched together parts of other games because no you're not going to make a fucking game from scratch. You're going to modify something else. you always will. You'll be incapable of approaching a game book without altering it. And suddenly all your old complaints about DnD will sound quaint. Because it's cheap basic cloth, but really easy to stitch things into. Not the choice for something really nice, but for the day to day it's an easy default.
>>98816504It was the right thing to do.
>>98816504>reformedInto what? It was formed into the shape it's in because it's the "default". People are always trying to "fix" it but then the fix is just another spinoff and the default remains. It was shaped by its role. It's one of those cursed monsters that has to exist and it can only free itself by turning someone else into the its replacement.
>>98813421Because 5.5 came out and why would I play the inferior version of the system?
>>98813421Because the campaign ended. We didn't start with D&D, and we won't end with it either.
>>98815292I don't care about that. If the game is good who cares about the creator's or playerbase's political leanings? If you do you don't belong on /tg/
>>98816640Maybe /pol/ will be more your speed, redditor
>>98816640nah he's right. the culture war shit is tourist shit. Always was. They've gotten comfy but they're only ever stinking up shitposts or disrupting actual discussion. Actual cancer over fake drama. Feels like celebrity gossip. We're fucking playing games with the same people for 15 years and some fag tells us to be afraid of rich podcasters in california.
>>98816646/tg/ is for traditional games, not culture warrior whining
>>98816646>thinks people ignoring his shitposts means he's welcome>got too comfy here you're cancer. kill yourself.
>>98813421Only because my 5e group moved away and we haven't been able to schedule an online game ever since.Still playing 3.5e weekly though.
>>98816579Nta, but it is the bigger bullshit than mods post in spam threads. You clearly don't even understand how TTRPGs work.
>>98816579Made my own games, threads like this are not retarded at all. System matters.
>>98816729NTA but as someone who has made his own games that other people have run for him of their own free will threads like this are completely retarded. They always devolve into culture war faggotry because nobody can defend their hipster contrarian faggotry beyond going ITS POPULAR THEREFORE BAD.
>>98816655But look how trustworthy we are. We are one of you.
>>98816723you only say that because you don't know how games work. It was with a group of mostly furries in a small tf2 forum in 2010. Furries never play TTRPGs without modding the shit out of them. I don't even know if the original system they hacked most of the game from was original to begin with, but it was based on Fallout used for their own setting. >>98816729 You haven't made your own game from scratch without using an existing system as a base (which was the thing being said here). If you're going to pretend you have, then elaborate. What was it like? Because you sound like you're pulling that from your ass.
>>98816757>You haven't made your own game from scratch without using an existing system as a baseWrong>If you're going to pretend you have, then elaborate. You're not entitled to that information.
>>98816815>You're not entitled to that information.but your opinion you'll shove down everyone's throat? Nah, kill yourself faggot.
>>98813421>Why did you stop playing 5e?I stopped playing after 3.5e because I wasn't interested in 4e and 5e was filled with literal fag shit.
>>98816823>It is totally its own thing inspired by nothing else.Yo. Bet this dude helped to make Blue Rose.
>>98816834>5e was filled with literal fag shit.in 2014? Fag shit wasn't even legal yet.
>>98816823Yes. I made a game, you don't get to tell me I didn't. System matters.
>>98816848yeah sure you totally created a new setting from scratch you just can't seem to remember where you left it and the stove is on so you gotta go.
>>98816387Not even running the same campaign for 10 years or so without getting to play as a player yourself, before getting a small half year break as a player then continuing only dming for another year?Kinda strict desu.
>>98813421I never played it. I started playing games right around the time the Riddle of Steel clone wave happened so that was my baseline, I never really got the appeal of D&D and its phylum of games.
>>98816757It seem you don't even understand the differense between campaign, system, and a video game.
>>98813421Two of my friends went to serve in the army and a third got cancer, and another betrayed ttrpgs in favour of e-roleplaying on ultrawoke servers in project z*mboid
I actually never started. As a kid I played AD&D 2e and a little bit of Palladium/RIFTS, then I played D&D 3.5. Then when Pathfinder came out I played Pathfinder 1e. I have only played Pathfinder 1e since then. There are no more books made for Pathfinder 1e, but it is a perfect and complete system, so I don't need more books.
>>98816638Well just to begin with a game is not just its mechanics, entire genres of game run entirely off of their aesthetics and thematics. If they didn't, everyone would just play GURPs or something. The most pointed critique of 5e isn't even that it's system is bad, it's that aesthetically and conceptually it was made by and for Pacific Northwest Americans with septum piercings and reddit gold accounts. Everything has this absurd pastel colored inoffensivity slathered over it. They had to remove slavery from DARK SUN to avoid offending the sensitivities of urbanite liberals from Portland. This has been just as monstrous for the game as White Wolf's incestuous relationship with LARP whales. It's hard to put into words how horrific the Redditification of D&D has been. This is an entirely valid complaint, and it's obviously political--if you asked the people who did it THEY would say it was political. I unironically miss the Satanic Panic, at least those people didn't take over the games themselves and then mutilate them in their own image, they just bitched about them. I remember back in the 3.X days on the official WOTC forums they had a mature discussion sub-forum and I went there once, and saw the future--a sort of 00s precursor to redditor rape victim bluehair of today, already beginning to take shape and accusing each other of NOT having been raped and thus not having the right to an opinion on xyz. It was already a problem then and now it has swallowed the whole of Wizards.
>>98817179Those three made the hobby, huh? Must have missed them at the table.
>>98817200Tragic. The woke took another one.
>>98816658>/tg/ - Culture War Whining
>>98815396I don't add salt to rice
>>98813421I quit when the DM cycled out to give his fat communist roommate a go, and he literally ran Candlekeep Mysteries from the book, with no application of his own initiative, and it was boring as fuck.Came to a head at the "Evil Spa" adventure; I made a joke about Elven Grooming Gangs (topical), and fatty decided to just start pretending I wasn't at the table, because he can't handle people making dark jokes about current affairs that upset his highly politicized worldview.I bounced, I game for fun, not to endure specious "punishment" from people I don't really like or respect.I play tabletop skirmish games with a beat copper, my old schoolfriend, and a younger (mid 20's) neighbor nowadays.I host. There are no problems.Shame, because although I am under no illusion about the quality, OG GM ran us through Chult and Strahd, and was more than competent, which made up for any system deficiency. We aren't friends any more though. He's a "socialist" who works as a stockbroker's assistant and only dated disabled birds.Smart guy on many levels, nice too, but I lost respect for him long before we stopped being friends.
>>98817749What a vacuous statement.
>>98817744It's traditional to gatekeep the mentally ill, troony loony
>>98813421Just isn't very good is all.
>>98813421I ran 2 campaigns to level 20 and 1 to level 16, since there's almost no meaningful customization in 5e I've seen just about everything worthwhile to be seen and the system is mechanically boring as fuck to me now. On top of that the absolute disaster that is 2024 was the final nail in the coffin for me.
>>98813421Three simple reasons.>5e isn't that good, it's only saving grace is that like skyrim. People added so much 3rd party support that it can fix a lot of it's problems if add it in.>There are better games especially if you're not doing a basic bitch high fantasy setting. Yes if you can homebrew and change things up to make it fit the setting. However at that point you have to change so much it's easier to just play another game that works better for it than trying to keep it 5e.>The people who tend to ONLY play 5e aren't really gamers and more of activists and moral fags. Though I will admit they are trying to jump to a few other systems like daggerheart and all.5e was basically baby's first 3.5 with some of the problems fixed. It's not really a universal system but a okay system for new people who want a real easy basic high fantasy setting. If you want a "Universal system" that can do pretty much anything. Try "Without Number" "GURPS" and other systems that are meant to bounce from setting to setting
>>98813421Burnout for stopping running it. Still in a game as a player but we're rotating through other games at the moment, which has me running FFG Star Wars. I like the way mechanics influence the story, which make it hard to return to 5e and d20 systems. I'm not even interested in 5.5e.
>>98818341> who want a real easy basic high fantasy settingWith elves in you game setting campaign, amirte? Fucking bot throwing a word salad of terms you don't understand.
>>98819051..... No, high fantasy means magic if fucking everywhere. Stuff like magic is common and magical items are just fucking everywhere. Everyone know that dumbass. I hate these tourists who think they can just "gotcha" by twisting your words. Then again enough cucks bent the knee to please the crowd that now they think they can get their way with just about anything by being a fucking "karen"
>>98819051Kill yourself retard, he is absolutely right in every single definition of the nebulous term high fantasy.
>>98819239NTA but what are you even talking about? The original definition for High Fantasy is just "set on a fictional world", which D&D definitely falls under.
>>98819283Thats what he said? He said dnd is good for basic high fantasy??
>>98813421I never started
>>98813421Got bored of it. You do a couple of campaigns and you've seen most it has to offer mechanically across the board given the minimal character customization options.
I had progressively-more-negative experiences playing it as time went on. Initially, I had fun and I still think the core bones of the game's mechanics are well-crafted, I liked bounded accuracy, I like Advantage, I like Concentration. It needed just one or two more granular mechanics for buffs and debuffs, like heavier use of the +/- 1d4 thing from Bless, and Fatigue. Then I noticed that I wasn't actually enthusiastic about a lot of the fresh content for it. None of the adventures appealed to me, I'm not really into Forgotten Realms, a lot of the fluff and lore was light on character, I didn't listen to podcastsThen I moved to a new city and never really found a group I liked. I tried sitting in on some drop-in games and was immediately turned off by how ineptly they were run; you can't have a table of 7+ people playing 5e D&D when half of them don't know the rules AND you're trying to do narrative-heavy RP stuff like in my critical podcasts. Then I tried running my own drop-in game and that went better, but then COVID happened. Then I moved to a new city and tried running a game for new people and got incredibly frustrated at how many people enthusiastically wanted to play D&D, but point-blank (like, Read, N1gga, read!-level) refused to learn to play D&D, but still insisted on playing. One guy played a bard, and didn't understand that he had spells, or any other game mechanic, despite having been seen pouring over the PHB. Eventually we realized that he'd just been reading the Bard section of the book over and over and over again, not understanding that there were universal rules and spells in the rest of the book.I grew disgusted with the classes and tried making an abridged essentials for babies version of 5e with Warrior/Mage/Expert classes and stripped out everything that had been tripping up or confusing my players. That didn't work.
>>98820151When COVID ended I tried drop-in games in my new city. That's when I encountered the queer leftist theater kids. There was at least one Tiefling Warlock at the table who was explicitly declared to be non-binary, there may have been more. I wasn't even allowed at the table of fabulous folx, all the straight conventional males were relegated to a leftovers table in the corner with the most-inept DM.I said "Hi" to a woman there and she immediately went on a rant about how some (absent) guy had Mansplained at her and Gatekept her. Most of the pre-game table talk was about Palestine and how much everyone hated Disgusting Bigots. And the games they ran were BAD.
Nice fanfiction bro.

>>98820888Noooo, not yet!But I can't argue with trips.
Original content in /tg/? What year is it?
>>98821475Original content means a lot less than it used to
>>98813421I never started.I decided I did not want to learn yet another version of D&D.

>>98821730For all the screenspace that have been wasted on wheelchairs on /tg/ over the years, you would think I would have seen one in game by now. It is just one of those non-issue brainghosts that haunts the dreams of people who believe the culture war tooth fairy will give them 50 bucks and a rimjob if they shit up 5 threads a day on social media.
>>98817749>is proud about unseasoned foodyou don't have to be so defensive of your mom's bad cooking.
>>98820689retarded reach, but that aside, I don't think you know what people mean by tourist here.
>>98821963>wotc hasn't been infiltrated by progressives>I have a different definition of tourists than everyone elsedon't call anyone else a retard
>>98821963Well that is easy. Anyone who disagrees with any of my opinions (and only my opinions count) is a tourist.
>>98816361You really love fifth do you? You sound like a fun guy.But you're right, it's at level 6 not 5 that all classes except the cleric get to teleport short distances so not all of them.It is subjective but compared to previous editions (except 4th, never played it), spells are just shit.
>>98821979Anon if you knew what tourist meant here you wouldn't conflate it with a company going woke. t's just a complete non sequitur.
>>98822025Don't you come at me with those big, fucking words!
>>98822000>they don't get teleport without really niche builds>the usage is nearly useless for all of them>with how movement works short range teleporting is mechanically no different than complex movement actionsSo no you're just talking shit. Exaggerating shit and acting like it's something it's not. And as was said, the spells aren't shit. You're just refusing to read the spell list if there's not a d8 in the text. You're a fucking poser comparing it to "previous editions" like you have any clue what they had.
>>98822035>big words>it's just normal words>anon is just an illiterate faggotmany such cases.

>>98822458Yeah? So you wanna go on record saying that you will put a lot of seasoning in your food, and then not add salt? Is that a thing you're actually saying here? You use tumeric and shit, but not salt? The load bearing seasoning?
>>98822566What record?
>>98822595Answer the question anon. Do you use salt when you cook or do you hate flavor?
>>98822622I mean, I usually just cum in the water while it is boiling. That's got salt, right?
>>98822645>one seasoning
>>98816841Yeah, it was. That's why you were born.>>98816638That's the problem, the game is not good currently because the hobby got infested and controlled by a leftists loud minority and now the designers of the game appeal to that particular fanbase. We didn't gatekeep hard enough.
>>98820768>>98820901>>98820970Unironically woke people make this face when you tell them there's no black people in your setting and positions of power are held by men because it's an medieval european inspired setting.

>>98822527>anon is too stupid to have a conversationDamn
>>98813421I started with other systems besides DnD (Albeit my very first was d20 derived) that had significantly more enjoyable combat. By the time I actually got to play DnD I practically fell asleep when a combat encounter started, and that was 3.pf. It was even worse when I switched to 5e for like one campaign
>>98825942What games did you play before and why would you say the combat was better?
>>98813421The game feels like it has run its course. I never get excited for a new campaign the second I hear it's 5e we're doing and I'm usually the one that runs games over playing in my friend group. Admittedly, I also prefer in person games and whenever one of my friends gets it in them to try and run a game they always go for online, so maybe a part of me always associates 5e with the shitty online experience. If someone is running a module, the setting can never engage me. If you've played one class one time, even with a different race or subclass, on a second go it still feels exactly the same. I roll stats straight to try and make a guy underpowered and even with suboptimal stats I can still keep up well enough with others. The biggest offense is that, for a game that has so much of its rulebook dedicated to combat, combat is awful. It's always a slog, there's no real element of danger or peril unless somehow someone is whittled down to their final hitpoints or a spell that puts you in a bad position, but that's after rounds of "I hit, they hit, I hit, they hit." I like when at the very least there's some sort of element that can make an encounter go bad right away, but 5e doesn't deliver that unless it’s in spite of the system. It also just doesn't stoke creative energy in players, because you get too much in your toolkit especially at later levels. Having restrictions or going up against something that's unbalanced on purpose makes people think outside of what's on their sheet, but you get way too many powers and other sort of abilities that most of it comes down to how much you feel like spamming them before you all decide to sleep. Also, it’s a chore trying to get the people really entrenched in it to try another game, but that’s not the system’s fault.
>>98825946Ops and Tactics, Riddle of Steel/Song of Swords, Mekton, I experimented a little with the 40k RPGs for a bit.>Why would you say the combat is betterBecause generally speaking the action economy feels better for actual combat in those other systems, for starters. You either get the one action and turns are more granular (like in the case of Riddle) or they're expanded significantly (Ops, with it's action point system) and you have a lot more lee-way for underwhelming turns or set up maneuvers like a trip or grapple. Beyond that, those systems make hits more impactful, instead of just chunking massive HP pools; hits make the enemies (or you) bleed, suffer pain and decisive hits can make them lose limb function and so on and so forth. Lastly, because the action economy is just better tuned and actually landing a blow is more important set up maneuvers that stun, trip, daze or grapple an opponent are more impactful. in DnD, things like trips and disarms are basically useless as they're often very difficult to pull off, don't work on half the things you fight and even if you do pull it off, you're sacrificing damage to maybe get a better hit on the AoO when they stand up. In every other system I listed, it's either a massive advantage to pull off a maneuver like a trip or disarm or you have enough actions that failing the attempt isn't a huge waste of your turn and time.
>>98813421I haven't. I really do not care about the system as long as we are having fun.I ran a very successful five-year-long campaign (lvl 1-20), but 5e was never an exclusive thing for me, we were regularly playing oneshots and short campaigns with Vampire, Witcher, Stars without Number, Warhammer Fantasy and a couple other systems. Now, I'm running two tables: one with AD&D 2e and another with Dragonbane, but if my friends want to play 5e, I'm open for it.Also, I do not care about the whole culture war aspect of 5e because I find it forced and grating on both sides of the political spectrum.
>>98826020Thanks for sharing. I love D&D and I think 5e is generally the best version but I agree with everything you said. D&D turns are tuned to make the player feel like they did something every turn, sometimes I think it succeeds in a beer-and-pretzels way, but it also sort of maximizes the “I wasted my whole turn!” factor. It isn’t granular enough to flow in an organic tactical way but also isn’t blocky enough to feel like you executed a plan.
>>98825511It's simple.
>>98826525...Well, that made me want to vomit. Thanks for that.

>>98826525Truly a different time
>>98826693On the internet, nobody knows that you are an extremely racist seventy five year old grandmother.
5e is a wargame pretending to be an RPG that is either too vague with the rules or too specific with shit that don't matter. For fuck's sake, it doesn't even have rules for common situations like fire spreading or dealing with large NPC units (even Chainmail had that covered). At this point I let my friends GM for 5e, but I don't GM 5e anymore>>98817707Do you ever get tired of being a zogbot?
>>98829663Nah I wouldn't say 5e is a wargame at all. It's a Superhero TTRPG trying to be a Fantasy TTRPG. However to make it idiot proof they kind of broke the game where it's held by glue and ducktape. From the handwaving of most of the exploration and hexcrawl. To not even bothering to play all the classes and subclasses to make sure they work. (Look at Ranger for example.) Funny enough if they bother to just fix 5e with 5.5/one/2024 They might have made something people would have jump to. However that shit is just as bad if not worse than 5e. At least 5e has enough homebrew and 3rd party to keep going. Most people aren't bother to make much for 5.5 compared to 5e. Often trying to make their own system with blackjack and hookers.
>>98829816> From the handwaving of most of the exploration and hexcrawlIt's in the DMG.>To not even bothering to play all the classes and subclasses to make sure they work. (Look at Ranger for example.)The ranger works fine in 5e2024. Even wild magic works fine.>At least 5e has enough homebrew and 3rd party to keep going.5e2024 is, for the most part, backwards compatible. Your shitbrew won't break it any worse than 5e2014.
>>98813421Ultimately I wanted a patched 3.0. At no point did I enjoy 5e. Eventually I stopped trying to houserule it into something palatable.
>>98829849Talking about 5e not 5.5 when it came to classes. Which by then they had fixed the problem with rangers with other books and subclasses. Also, yes 5.5 is mostly backwards compatible with 5e. However it doesn't really bring anything into the table to make it worth making the switch.
>>98826525Jesus Christ, so these are the people sharing my board?
