Unironically how much goddamn weed did White Wolf smoke when they decided to make the Technocracy the bad guys?

probably came across some of Nick Land's schizo ramblings and decided "yeah that sounds nefarious enough"

mad scientists have been the bad guys for a long time anyway

To some extent I think it was more so “The Technocracy want to suppress magic, and Mage is all about doing cool shit with magic, so obviously players will want to side with the group that does cool shit with magic rather than the stuffy suits who say you can’t light a cigarette with your fingers.”

I think some editions, like Mage 20th, are less stringent on that though.
>>
Wasn't the deal that they started out as the good guys but got increasingly selfish and corrupt as they became more powerful?

>technocracy is inherently good
>>
They looked at the soviet union?
>>
>>98819901
>Humanity inherently contains the power to become gods
>Which they need, because they live in a universe full of supernatural threats far stronger than them
>And the Technocracy actively suppresses this power in humans
It’s quite easy to see why the Technocracy is the bad guys

Technology being bad was always a fantasy trope. I think it has to do with power dynamics and how reality warping it is, like how magic is mostly evil in dark or low fantasy settings.

>>98823261
Do you want reality falling apart? Because that is how you get reality falling apart.

Regular anti-authoritarianism against The Man and them suppressing humanity's potential
They DID realize that Technocracy had a point later on, tho, so they made them flawed but well meaning antagonists and relegated truly evil guys to Nephendu and such

>Do you want reality falling apart?
Was reality falling apart before the 14th century? No? Then it'll be okay/
>>

You don't remember the 90s, do you?

But mages are authoritarian
>>
>>98819901
Easy, the Technocracy are an alliance of Mage factions that have control of reality so they don't have to do magic because magic is all about breaking the rules of reality so the Technocracy are the establishment of Mage and to gen X the establishment is the enemy.

You'd probably have to ask OP's parents about them.
