>>98820836Not sure if I need to do anything else with this dude. Spent about 4-5 hours total including waiting for paint to dry. Was pretty chill.

Alright I’m gonna leave him for now and work on the Ork warboss who rides him.I’ll come back to the spikes, leather, and nmm later.
While out in the middle of nowhere, I put together a piece of terrain using mostly stuff I could find laying around. Aluminum foil, paper towels, a chunk of a plastic food container, dirt from the ground, and weed seeds for the dead grass. I did have access to PVA and CA glue, and found some really cheap (terrible) craft paint. I'm going to fix it up a bit and seal it now that I'm home. Going to make it a bit more grassy since I'm not working on wasteland terrain right now. Shermans are something I'm slowly plugging away at. 15mm Canadian Sherman VCs mainly for Chain of Command

>finish my first two armies>made them for playing, not display>matte varnish>play with them like 10 games>read that I should've gloss varnished first because that protects betterNow, I am feeling uneasy when thinking about putting a gloss and then matte layer on the already existing matte layer, and the natural skin grease that rubbed on from playing...
>>98824598Gloss/satin varnish does protect better, but matte still protects the models somewhat. You could add a layer of satin varnish on top and you should be fine.
>>98824598I'm constantly in fear of damaging my models for the same reasons. Everything gets a coat of satin varnish, but you can't really tell if you got full coverage. Always scared of chipping and rubbing... Repairing the models paintjobs if they do get fucked up would be inconvenient at best, maybe impossible. But you still have to take them to conventions and put them in the case and pick up individual casualties and bump them into each other and so on. It makes me nervous.
>>98824598I told you that's boomer lore. it's all the same shit. the only difference is the surface finish.
>>98824606I might just do that. While they aren't the most beautiful paintjobs, I don't know if two extra layers of varnish, thick enough to protect, wouldn't make them look off.Well, I suppose I could make a test model first to see.
>>98824668stop. first find a single piece of evidence that isn't "I heard it from a guy who saw it on a jewtube video" that shows any difference in quality between gloss or matte clear coat, because you won't find one from any of the companies that actually produce the stuff.

>>98824706will you do an a/b test by dropping both on the floor and kicking them around to see how they will wear? don't forget to account for the fact that one will have twice as much coating if it has one layer on top of another. the point is that you are worrying about nothing. matte being less durable than gloss isn't real.
>>98824706Don't worry about the other guy, that's just one of our resident schizophrenics. They're like the inverse of the people who get all their info from youtube. If one of their "jewtubers" says one thing once, then it's wrong forever in their minds.

I haven't been keeping up, but do you guys really not realize how awful gloss varnished minis would look?Acrylic paint and primer are never going to be THAT durable, if it's an army you play with you just have to accept that you'll lose paint here and there.

Regarding 3D printing, resin at least, you're lying if you don't admit all the issues with sticking plates, deformed prints, shitty resin batches you can do nothing about, having to learn how supports actually work, it's a separate hobby itself. It's not a plug and play stupidproof activity, you have to adjust every print, otherwise there wouldn't be so many fucking threads on tech support boards and discord about it.
>>98821300I love him, good work anon
>>98818097Arm almost done, only transfers remain.
Progress has been very slow on the three ork huts. I paint for hours every day, but terrain takes ages to finish, so I took a little break and worked on some other smaller bits of terrain for a change of pace.First up are three barbed wire clusters.I'm doing most of the universal equipment as terrain pieces to just make the game simpler. It'll be very casual 4 player games where pretty much only I'll know the rules. So stuff like barbed wire, ladders, barricades etc. will already be on the table.I'm doing six of these barbed wire clusters, and the first three will have the classic 2nd edition cactus that I have four larger clusters of too. The other three will have fallen branches and stuff.I really like the colour of the cactus, but I can already see a few small changes I'll make to the bases (making the second green highlight more visable and not let the finial highlight take over too much). It's hard to see in the photos, but I made pools of water here and there using gloss varnish mixed with a bit of Landser Grey xpress.I want to make every bit of terrain really dense for my Exodite theme and I think it looks great at tabletop height.I bought a bunch of Gamergrass jungle specific tufts and stuff, but it's so expensive I'm saving it for the minis themselves and not for the terrain pieces. But I'm thinking about not doing any of the gamergrass stuff until everything is painted up before I know how much I can use on each mini to make all of them look dense. Main thing is the exodite bases though, I want them to be almost entirely covered with grass and plants.
I also did my first slap chop test (which I'll primarily be using for the orks and tyranids). Also my first time really using contrast/xpress paints. They feel really weird to paint with, it's like jelly that hasn't quite set yet. I found it a little difficult to do over flatter surfaces.I bought Dreadnought Yellow because I liked the orange shade it had, but it's a little too dark, so I'll have to get the brighter one too.But I also noticed I REALLY need to do the white drybrush part heavily. It needs to basically be white in those areas. Also, I noticed that using the Dirty Down rust (that I still love. Worth every penny), that the phase where you use water to move it around can erase the xpress layer beneath it. So just be aware of that. Also did the blister pack foam weathering with burnt umber, but it's more noticeable on the back. Also note to self, buy masking tape! My hands are unsteady as fuck for doing hardcore painting like doing straight hazard stripes.I think they turned out shit, but they look fine from tabletop height and I'm glad to have smaller bits I can do before doing the more serious pieces. I love the rust though.
>>98820836What is the difference between vallejo/AK pigments and soft pastel? They are both pigment powder, right?
>>98825143Good idea. Santa didn't respond to my asking if he could handle it for us this year, but at least if he happens see one from me regarding this, he won't be (as) surprised.I'm thinking he ran our Secret Santa for five years!
>>98825847Yeah, I think it would be polite to let him know that way. Shows we appreciate his work from last few years.
>>98825194auto supports work, never had a bad resin, sticking to the plate isnt a problem when you learn to use a razor for removal, warping is exposure settings and unlike fdm you tune that once only.

>>98825847I'd love to give him a gift, desu. He's put so much work into all this.
>>98825943if he does respond, genuinely i would send something along as well
>>98824583 I was stuck out in the middle of nowhere. I had the materials dry heated and will be sealing when I'm done. In regards to drying, I'm going to be making some flock with tea leaves and pigment in the next few months. It's important to dry the stuff out with as close to no moisture process (not just under the sun) as you can. Sealing is important when everything's done.People use shit like seafoam and other natural materials for terrain pretty often.By the way, if you use tissue paper for cloth (in this case, the flag in the pic), don't use textured paper unless you want that shit lumpy. I thought I could just smooth it out with some pva. Nooope
>>98825671very cute, anonif you give the underside a slather of PVA like the topside you can sort of counteract the curling that it causesbetter to use something more solid for your base than corrugated cardboard if you can find it, too, since it'll resist warping more
Base is finished and this lad is now doneTried UV resin for the first time did go semi well, both skulls are now sunken
>>98826374Thanks for the tip, I'll do that to the next three barbed wire pieces I'm building. I thought I had sealed the sides off by tapering the edges and filling them, but it still ended up getting bent. The four bigger cactus pieces I've made are also on cardboard that got a little bent. It's ok though, it looks fine from tabletop height, I just like having terrain be pretty flush with the board so minis can stand on them without it being wonky. It's wonky now though. Oh well.
The jigsaw mixer can be made both cheaper and better by taping a plastic bottle onto it instead of modifying a clamp to hold your paint, a little tissue in the bottle to prevent rattling and the bottle makes the potential paint mess of the paint bottle flying away a non-issue.
>>98826572... I just noticed my dot of paint on the cap did not survive the process.
>>98826572madlad actually did the meme
>>98826616Hey man, it works.
>>98826572similar, i use my massage gun to shake it for me. I should build a better holder, but duct tape works fine
>>98826654the only improvement needed here is to put them inside a container to prevent the slim chance of a mess, with dropper caps that have threaded lids that chance is a lot slimmer than GW pots at least. It also means you don't need to undo the tape for every bottle of paint.
I've seen that it's possible to unclip the cap on a GW pot entirely, I wonder if it would be possible to design a dropper bottle nozzle that fits onto GW pots straight up without requiring you to transfer paints.
>>98826684with 3d printing that shouldn't be an issue, the trouble would be that the pots aren't designed to squeeze paint through a dropper, to short and fat, I imagine it would work, just not as nice as you'd want, there is a reason dropper bottles are tall and skinny.
>>98826666you know im retarded, ive never considered gw pots shaking open. but no issues so far. if you ever see a wall cover in technical glow, you'll know it was me
>>98826712I thought about that, GW pots aren't particularly squeezable. Even still, the ability to remove GW caps entirely should open up the ability to replace those fuckass pot lids, even if you don't use dropped lids per se.
>>98826716empty pill bottles are cheap.
>>98826712also the wrong material. pots are thicker plastic than droppers. maybe a 2 stage pipette? although i think this is getting more complex than just transferring it to a dropper
>>98826729What about a screwtop lid attachment? Just take paint straight out of the pot without it getting clogged, stuck open, and drying out.
>>98826739probably the best solve, no paint loss from transferring (or at least necessitated thinning to get all the paint) and you lose the risk of the stupid flip top causing the pot to knock over at least.Although really the best solution is to just buy paint that's already in a dropper and tell GW via your wallet what they need to do.
>>98826751>Although really the best solution is to just buy paint that's already in a dropper and tell GW via your wallet what they need to do.I'd be inclined to agree, but the temptation of trying those newly released paints is hard to resist. I at least want to try that white.

>>98826853I imagine they did, they probably just did a cost/benefit analysis and decided against updating the pots.the shitty pots probably make GW a bunch more money from the schmucks who will buy nothing not branded "warhammer" when they inevitably fail, spill or dry out, and subsequently get replaced with the exact same shitty bottles.

>>98824842damn anon, awesome job!
>>98827206got a laugh from me. incredible drawing>>98827233i buy books, just not gw
>>98827206Hmm, could be done with powerdrill, just weight the pot/paint/bottle togerher and counterbalance them.I think i'll try later if any of my buried ancient gw pots are still liquid.I will do this outside.
>>98827224Paint is the primary recurring purchase, probably significant, books are pirated, models are limited per customer.
lol, anon thinks people are more frequently buying paint than models. Like, in between the 1 model kit they buy a year they're still chewing through their paints by fingerpainting or something.
the highlights on the red didnt come out bright enough.
>>98827382Some of us paint regularly and frequently.
>>98827404... On models you don't have?I don't think many people exclusively painting non-GW models are buying many GW paints but I could be wrong.
>>98827224idk but last time I checked Space Marines were >50% of all GW revenue.
>>98827404you get what....50 marines from a single pot? at least? even if you include all the extra colors, you can paint an army 20 pots with plenty left over. that would give a ratio of 100 minis to 20 paints or 5:1
>>98827418>>98827455You guys pretending people don't stack 50 different colours of green they'll never use are funny.
What is the most unusual/poorhammer material you've used in your models? I've used a lot of masking tape to create armour panels etc. for miniatures. Now I'm thinking of making a sci-fi conversion of a scale model, or the deodorant bottle grav tank with the spoon turret. I've a hunch that small cable connectors and screw caps could be used on scale models, for example. What do you think?
Can some chad custodes player share their not golden paint schemes? I have a bad experience with painting 2000 points of stormcast and I don't want go through that ever again
>>98827552Rhinox hide base coat, sponge on retributor armor just skipping most of the recessed and downward facing areas, highlight with a lighter metallic where it makes sense.I made this up, but it sounds like it'd work. Good luck.
>>98827338>gw customers paint models so much they need new pots>limited per customer.>new fomo unit every monthkekat most they have to buy new paints because they spilled or dried up
>>98827605You're conflating long-term hobbyists with ne paypig impulse customers. Some morons still insist on buying citadel paints even if they don't buy or play GW games.
>>98821062
>>98827577>give me some examples of non gold paint schemes>try gold! anon, please get your head checked
>>98827488>What is the most unusual/poorhammer material you've used in your models?I got this OOP First Edition Dreadnought from a friend, and his right shoulder was missing. I replaced it with a washer nut that accommodated the scatter laser.
>>98826654>>98826572>>98827206I just bought one of those vortex mixers that pharmacies use to mix medicines. Works pretty well without the risk of the cap coming off or whatever.
>>98827703That is obviously for putting your dick against.
>>98827552Then why the fuck do you want to play the golden boys???
>>98827767>Can I have some custodes, but without the gold?>HEY, JIMMY! GET ME SOME CUSTODES WITH NUTHIN'!
>>98827488>unusual/poorhammer materialThat's a tough one. It's pretty common for modeling in general to make use of a variety of materials, including found objects. Masking with tape is pretty common and there's really not much of a limit on the things you can use. There are a few people on the Tubes that exclusively build models from various bits and bobs that include scrap chunks from hardware like vacuum cleaners, printers, and whatnot. I can't really think of anything particularly unusual that I've used. Poor, I've found cheap broken chain necklaces that I've reused when I was a kid, made some miniature gold tone bracelets with them. Snipped and bent some guitar string from a beater I found to make ribbed piping. You need to bend that incrementally or you end up with inconsistent gaps between each rib. Aside from that, I cut a chunk of plastic from the lid of a large food container to expand the turret ring on a 1/35 French tank. Your imagination and knowledge of materials are probably the big limiters.
>>98827703this type sucks because you have to keep your hand on it the whole time and the transmitted vibrations can cause joint injury.
>>98826572>>98826654Genuinely a good idea. I really hurt my wrist yesterday shaking some of my paints up.
>>98827846>>98827829
when do my fingers stop moving away from where I want them to aimthis painting shit is so fucking hard
>>98828008When youve developed your fine motor muscles in the hand, ones youve never used like this in your entire life.
>>98828057>ones youve never used like this in your entire lifeare you a zoomer that never learned how to write in cursive or something?
>>98828116(You) not me, ESL bitch, learn to fucking read.
>>98828008Practice. The average person couldn't draw a straight line if their life depended on it.>>98828137>ones youveGlass houses, anon.
>>98828162>Practice. The average person couldn't draw a straight line if their life depended on it.When I was learning to draw I will always remember>you can't even reliably draw a decent circle, how tf do you think you are gonna be able to reliably draw basically anything?
>>98828162just like coloring books are easier than drawing, painting miniatures is easier than painting on canvas. if you can write legibly you should have enough motor skills to paint space marines.
>>98828184Which is why everyone can be a crystal brush or golden demon winner with 3 months of training/sarcasm
Luv me fat lads
what painting handle do I want if im going to paint 30+ dudes on 40mm bases. (ogor mawtribes). I have the first citadel painting handle, and it just feels like its gonna snap when its on 40mm (max setting). So never felt comfy using it on 40mm, works great on 32mm tho.
>>98828309If you're painting one at a time, an alligator clip on a cocktail stick from a hardware store will do
>>98828309>>98828348Pic related You "bite" the side of the base and it will hold normal plastic minis no problem
>>98828309a counting stick puttied to a base
>>98828190you don't even need to be able to win a golden demon to paint a decent space marine
>"tonight is going to be the night i actually sit down and throw some paint on models">do a little weight lifting after work>shoulder pain is now 1000x worse than this morninggoddammit.
>>98828309during the year I got a golden maple handle as a gift and I like it but you do need to have your dudes on a base to mount it with blue tac
>>98824098Thank you for taking up the mantle. Hopefully everything works out smoothly.
>>98824098>What are you planning to give your giftee?whats a normal number of dragons dildos to gift? 3? 7? planning to gift what people ask for feels like a stupid answer
>>98828830golden sells a spring loaded clip head for their handles as well
>>98827721I have done that with my tornado mixer and have came many times. It's just a side benefit really.>>98827874kek
Ork skin lineup #1Ork 1 I think it's similar to 3 but I think this photo isn't that great
>>98822185Yeah. I leave mine on the desk a few days to appreciate before they go in the storage case. Finished this guy last week and got his photoshoot in over the weekend and he's on the desk right now.I do sometimes worry I'm gonna reach for something on the desk and break a piece inadvertently. Almost happened with this dude when I tipped his sword with my elbow and thought I loosened it.
>>98825671>>98825698Do you have a dedicated blue-white backdrop or do you edit these into one?
Ork skin lineup #2Masked ork probably closest to my painted test model, but I think it's not as warm Now do I keep painting ork skin or finish up these boyz?
>>98828198they're beautiful anon, such fun dudes to paint. where's the fat witch?
>>98828971finish them. with all of their clan colors on you might think a different one is better. Number 3 in image #2 is the best skin so far, the brighter yellow pops
Best way to paint minis before basing them? I thought maybe using a small bottle and sticky tack would be enough to brush stuff on. I think I've seen some people recommend supergluing one contact point to the end of stick and pulling it off when done.
>>98827829If you're not concern trolling and you actually have some kind of joint condition then I recommend getting some of those gloves designed for dissipating power tool vibrations
I'm about 50% done on the current batch. At this rate i might finish my fall goal before November. I guess I'll have to dig out more characters to have painted by Christmas
I thought about adding a spire, but it feels like it would just be too damn tall at that point.
>>98823858Little bit of progress on them tonight
Got the black gunmetal base down for everything that isn't the armor panels. Only did 2 of the 3 dreads tonight. >>98829143The best I've found so far is Museum Putty(it's called Quake Hold at Home Depot where I got it). Not quite as sticky as blue tack, but even after spraying it with primer and all sorts of other acrylics, it still holds things together. And it sticks to itself so you can always just smash it with another ball of the stuff to pull it off the model. Just a little ball of the stuff between the model and the base to keep them together until you want to glue them together.
All doneHappy with the result but it was honestly nightmarishnever buying a modiphius resin product ever again
>>98829552I love the volumes you've got going here and the whole piece looks so crisp, great job.>>98829495That blue metallic is really nice!>>98829490That's a very neat color scheme.>>98829457Looks great, always love seeing a scratchbuild.>>98828971I really like the rightmost skin, those more pronounced yellowish highlights give it lovely contrast.>>98828961Absolutely beautiful and incredibly clean work!
>>98829974Good work.
>>98829552that's a cool sculpt, it reminds me of the fallout tactics dude. sick paint job btw, good work anon.
>>98825603Oh that's a sick kitbash anon great work
>>98821330what brush primer are you using?
>>98828974Thanks! Fat Witch stays in the box for now, I just got these cabinets and temporarily arranged them, I also need to buy leds lights
>>98828966I made two A4 papers with the gradient. One vertical and one horizontal. I use lightroom to remove any bits of the frame the paper doesn't cover if I need to pull the camera away for focus. You could do it all in post, but I prefer to get the most out of a photo in camera and do as little as possible in post.I could have done a better job making the gradient smoother, but it's just for my casual shit so it works fine.I take the shots on a windowsill in my house where I can set it up between two windows and have indirect daylight from left and right. There's also another window in the room doing a little bit of fill light from the front'ish.Simple shit with minimal effort and gear.
>>98828971Can imagine how good these look in person when they look that good in a mega close up shot like that. Everything I do looks wonky as fuck that close. Tabletop height is my saviour.
