Is that 99% of games heavily rely on resource management as a core aspect of the magic system, when wizards/witches in Harry Potter can use the vast majority of spells without cost. >spell slots>mana/magical energy pools>ritual components>stamina/fatigue>cast-from-HP>etc.And you can't just simply ignore the resources, because the entire system is balanced around the assumption that you will in fact have to manage them. The game just stops working. It's impossible without a bespoke system specifically designed around being able to sling magic around willy-nilly, but despite the popularity of Harry Potter, such a game would appeal to almost no one.
>>98823505Harry Potter works best with vibes based storygame systems unironically. If you are a worldbuilding/magic system fag, Harry Potter is not for you.
This FOTM spamming is just plain faggotry at this point.

>>98823818It being on your fetish list doesn't mean it's not also tranny shit anon
>>98823505>It's impossible without a bespoke system specifically designed around being able to sling magic around willy-nilly,False.You make spells into skill checks, with appropriate difficulties.>I Apparate to right behind the Death Eater>Are you sure about that?>Yes!>Okay. Roll. You need a 17.>I need a what?>A 17. You're under combat conditions, trying to Apparate with great precision. You would get a bonus if you could see where you were going, but by definition the goon is in the way.>Fuck, uh, okay...2.>You Apparate into the wall behind the goon. Your character is disabled until after the battle. You're gonna need to pay some experts to de-wall you.The real problem with Harry Potter is that JKR just made up random shit on the spot with absolutely no regard for consistency, let alone balance.
>>98823505I wouldn't say that's true. I can think of a few superhero systems offhand that would handle it just fine, which makes sense sine superhero systems pretty much are specifically designed around letting the characters sling magic around willy-nilly. At most you'd need to tone down the scale of the powers or set rules on what could be taken, but that's also pretty standard for running a supers game.
>>98823505Even accepting your (untrue) premise, this is nonsense. 99% of games not working is irrelevant: just use one of the other 1%.
>>98823888>>98823818>>98823744What we're talking about isn't even really any of that though. What we're talking about is a straight-up AU where Draco was never born, never existed, and in his place was Draecina or whatever you want to call her. A new character, albeit with a lot of superficial similarities. That is not the same thing as Draco being magically transformed into a vagina-haver.
>>98823712>>98823720>That's no Basilisk
Bait thread aside, I can't think of a more boring setting than Harry Potter to play in. There's a wide world of interesting magical creatures and people, but they're not defined well enough to use in a campaign. There's magic, but very specific spells who's effects are incredibly specificIf everyone can use the killing spell, what's the point of anything else being used in combat? Non lethal combat? What's the point then?Percy Jackson offers a much better ttrpg experience where you and your squad are sent across America for a quest, and you can put your characters in all kinds of situations, without having to be shackled to a singular location. There's a built in monster-manual by being able to derive monsters from mythology. You can have your characters all spec into different types of players instead of "magic user no.48257"Combat can be a lethal struggle, and varied in its application, too.
>>98824726Harry Potter is one of those things that's magical as a child but quickly falls apart under adult inspection. But fuck that. Put your critical thinking to the side and just have fun. Treat the game more as shared storytelling than crunch, stay whimsical, and enjoy.
what a shit thread
>>98824738Honestly, he has a point, but mainly insofar that the world revolves so heavily around Harry Potter and his experiences that Rowling kind of kneecapped the setting and any GM trying to make an adventure set outside that scope is going to need to put much more work in than with other settings. It’s easy to say “just be whimsical” when you’re not the one who has to pull it all out of your ass for the sake of the game, since getting players involved in the creative process can sometimes be like pulling teeth.
>>98823505God you’re dumb.
>>98823505You just want to talk about Malfoid, don't you, Anonymous?
>>98824726>more boring\*duller
>>98824726>If everyone can use the killing spell, what's the point of anything else being used in combat? Non lethal combat? What's the point then? You can’t use the killing spell unless you really want someone dead and want it with all your heart. Most people can’t. Even when they can, it only works on people they hate, not on strangers (unless they’re so depraved as to hate everyone, and that’s why dark mages go coocoo, it erodes your soul). And they actually do get tired from using big magic, they just don’t “run out”. It’s the same way you get tired doing fancy sword moves. Harry Potter is a game of at-wills, it’s more about picking the right spell and using it in the right way to fix a contrived problem.
>>98825609>You can’t use the killing spell unless you really want someone dead and want it with all your heartSo, the majority of murderhobos who would want access to that spell in the first place then.
>>98825381"Talk" is generous. He wants people to post images he hasn't seen and he doesn't know where else to make a thread begging. Little does OP realize that he probably has all the Malfoid art already.
>>98825751Probably not. There's a lot being made still.
>>98823505Actions are resources.
>>98823505You are assuming that the resource to be managed is magical effects, because that's common in 99% of the game systems you've played. That's not true in any system. You may need to tweak the setting aspects a bit, but try a system where the limited resource is scene-relevancy of true facts (Fate: Condensed,) votes towards how the scene plays out (Dogs in the Vineyard,) or switches focus to another scope of gaming entirely, like the timeline building game Microscope. What makes HP interesting isn't he well thought out tactical spellcasting, it's the social map. So, take a look at systems that do that well like Nicotine Girls and a Place to Fuck Each Other (just because the default setting is lesbians who do astrology doesn't mean that you can't just swipe the system. It works great for any social system where people keep trying to make out until a stable relationship somehow happens.)The problem isn't that there aren't a ton of systems that could do heavily armed teenage wizards with raging hormones with ease. There are. They're just not published by Hasbro, Paizo, or Steve Jackson Games.God, a Hogwarts-themed game of A Penny for My Thoughts set in St. Mungo's would be amazing.
>>98825609>unless you really want someone dead and want it with all your heartSo, probably most people in a to-the-death battle with another person?
I agree that to make an RPG based on Harry Potter you'd have to actually explain how the magic worked. Not even to Sanderson levels of autistic detail, but something that actually made sense. I wasn't even sure how the duels or battles between groups of wizards worked at the end of books/movies(it's been awhile admittedly). The insta-death spell was considered forbidden and evil so presumably the good wizards are just using stun/disarm/reflect type spells?
>>98825986Yes, and the good ones can also counter the hexes coming there way, that’s how you sometimes get those extended battles between specific parties.
>>98825986>The insta-death spell was considered forbidden and evil so presumably the good wizards are just using stun/disarm/reflect type spells?Pretty much. And it’s not that much of a handicap considering magic can already do some nasty shit like permanently scar people’s faces with pockmarks or turn people into mice and shit before you get to the ones that outright injure them with lethal intent.
>>98826557Most wizards in HP only get access to three of those spells.
>>98826582A real Harry Potter ttrpg would be boring as shit since the cool stuff people want would be limited to just the wizard nazis or take too long like to get to. And your solution of “rename 5e D&D shit cause I can’t be assed to do anything more meaningful” is even more boring.
>>98826609As in the kinds of autists that would want a Harry Potter game would point out the shape shifting potion takes months to make, the invisible cloak is a unique one of a kind item, and the spells that aren’t illegal for being “evil” basically takes until you’re an adult to learn how to do properly. Most games don’t have such stupid restrictions since they aren’t gate kept by protagonist privileges, but the weirdos who fixate on HP wouldn’t let it go.>>98826615Feel free to play dumb, anon.
>>98825974There's a difference between wanting to win/ desperately wanting to not die, and actually HATING the other person so much that it would kill them on the spot. Its difficult to really, deeply hate someone that you know nothing about, and might not even know their face unless you just despise all people by default and would happily watch the whole world burn.
>>98823505Just be the 1% of games how is this hard?>Trivial Magic is Trivial, while useful to some degree it can't accomplish manythings. >Non-trivial magic takes effort and a talented mage may only accomplish this a handful of times a day. >Something like a duel of deadly intent, will certainly tax the spirit and endurance of any mages who engage in them. Even duellests who specialize in this, may still only end up good for a couple of duels. It's inconsistent? Magic in the potter verse is inconsistent as hell (and comes from several sources in universe). Come back when you have a working prototype game. personally I like the cast from HP (perhaps wiht an endurance/hp divide) because I think Tony wiht a 12 gauge has a shot (heh) in the potter verse.
>>98826918Back in the day there was a /k/ screencap about the SAS handling the Voldemort situation. Iirc JKR herself said a big part of why the wizarding world stayed hidden is that avada kedavra is great and all, but an L96 does the job better and from longer range; modern tech would wipe out witches surer than Salem.
>>98826744Harry has a similar experience using Crucio at first. He does later successfully torture a death eater with it.
>>98825974>>98826744Yea man, wanting to live and being hopped up on adrenaline isn’t enough, it isn’t like pulling a trigger. Even hating might not be enough, it might have to be the right kind of hate. Snape could do it to dumbledore, because Snape is a bitter old coot and he practices dark magic, but Harry couldn’t do it to Snape.
>>98823505I think the school aspect of HP is as integral to the setting as the magic aspect. Playing as an inexperienced young wizard bound by social restrictions is the limitation. I wonder if you could use a L5R-like system for that.
>>98823505Mage the Ascenion and Mage the Awakening managed to create functioning games were there is no resource management and you can always just cast spells whenever you want
>>98827066Did they? I've literally never seen anyone talk about a Mage game they played that wasn't very obviously made up on the spot to win an argument in a powerlevel thread. It always struck me as a system that a certain kind of nerd loves to talk about, but nobody actually plays.
>>98827066The balance in Mage is based on the risk of backlash, which there’s some precedence for in Potter.
>>98827092You might not believe me, but I have played M:tA, and the game is written so that a completely normal play report sounds exactly like a made-up nogames story in a thread about power levels. It was a long time ago, but I remember we ran into vampires, and my guy blew them all away with golden fire which (he perceived) actually came from God and not from him.
>>98827060You could use WFRP 2e, which literally has a splat for playing this kind of game. Though you won't get a happy malfoid girlfriend and ever-after ending in Warhammer.
>mfw the arithmantics let lose a self improving spell in egypt and i need to clean up the mess so that my snot nosed employers get more gold for their reserves
Best system for a Harry Potter game is, and I'm not joking here, PbtA.>Everyone picks their character niche>Give them moves based on it>Make it so magic is just part of how you solve the problems, in fact being able to solve them without magic should require a move probably (Something like 'The least autistic wizard who ever lived' for being able to actually convince people with your words and so on)>Focus on the character drama and have spells be things characters know and can use as part of the narrative, if you don't know 'Oo'ugh Mee Kna'kars' then you can't cast it and have to describe trying to punch him in the dick instead.Simple
>>98823505Just combine it with Dark Heresy. Solves 99% of the problems.
my complaint about Malfoid is that it's not really enough of a failure to be Malfoy. by having literally any kind of charm she fails at being r63 Malfoy.that boy fails at everything he tries, has zero talents or accomplishments and is a complete liability who cannot resist stepping on a rake for the life of himyou lose out all the funny parts by making her a generic tsundere instead of a disastrous failure of a wizard racist
>>98824005GURPS basic magic uses individual spells as skills. This kinda fits harry potter cause while most just put 1 point in each spell, you could have a mage that specializes in a specific spell, putting lots of points into it, like how harry is good at expelliarmus.
>>98823505Just use Kids on Brooms ffs
>>98825381>>98825751Mainly, I wanted to talk about various methods of resource management in TTRPG magic systems. Specifically, the extent to which resource management can be underplayed, rather than being the primary constraint, and still make for a satisfying experience. Or just levels of resource management in TTRPG magic generally. It's not exactly relevant, but Skyrim's Dragon Shouts were the true inspiration for this thread; I just used Malfoid because I doubted that TTRPG resource autism would spark discussion.
>>98828709It occurs to me that the most important resource in harry potter magic in most cases isn't some vague power source like mana: its *time*. Speaking the words and precise wand movements take time to do. You can try to rush it, but that introduces a risk of fucking it up. The earliest spells that students are taught take longer to cast because you have to train them on something that they can break down and learn in chunks with larger scale motions instead of jumping directly into fine motion. Later spells are not necessarily stronger, but they are often faster because you can do the act of casting more quickly with smaller, more precise gestures. So it feels like in a RPG system, breaking down order of operations based on action speed seems like a must. It doesn't matter what spell you *were* going to cast if the other guy gets their spell off first. Even if its a 'weaker' spell, the fact that it hits you before you could finish casting yours is probably the determining factor of who is winning the fight. You might have been about to cast 'explode their head', but now you're entangled in vines so that doesn't get to happen.
>>98823540I didn't get where it was coming from but then overheard someone saying it's a twitter trend dominated by /pol/ types and I understand it less now.
>>98829118>overheard someone saying it's a twitter trend dominated by /pol/ types and I understand it less now.understand it fewer*
>>98829118"Foid" is a derogatory term for so-called "human" females from the incel community, so it's pretty inextricably linked to /pol/ sentiment.
>>98829134I hate learning the reason for things where the reason is something extremely stupid. That happy little feeling of something confusing suddenly making sense is replaced by disappointment and disgust.
>>98826942I'm not sure it would be nearly so one sided AFTER the first encounter. Wizardry has several logistical advantages that would make any army think twice before trying to engage. That said the first encounter (on both sides) will be hilariously one sided. Some company of soldiers is going to be cursed to have their asses and mouths reversed forever. And some Clutch? Gaggle? Coven? of dark bad blah blah Wizards are going to get shredded by rounds above 1200fps.
>>98829134Taking foid seriously is like taking chud seriously. You have to be a huge sperg to get worked up over that.
>>98829319While not a great show overall, this was one of the bits I liked about Copcraft. Basically, a portal opens up in the middle of the ocean linking Earth to a fantasy world, and both sides try exploring the other. The war is brief and intensely confusing for both sides, because we have modern technology and they have magic and neither side understands what the other one is doing or what they're really capable of so everyone is mostly just scared shitless and both sides feel really unprepared for this fight because no one knows what the rules are anymore. That's all backstory to explain why there is a city on Earth that can loosely be described as 'magic Hong Kong full of escapees from magic world', but its still a fun concept in terms of how such a conflict would go.
>>98825381Not OP, but yes.
>>98829327>>98829134It's great because it filters the most annoying people
Magic schools are an underrated setting for rpg
>>98830754I still think that Ronnie is way superior than Malfoid.
>>98828744That "resource" is primarily a concern in adversarial situations. It is a lot less meaningful outside of that, which means that players have zero reason not to spam any and every form of magic without limit whenever there isn't extreme time pressure.
Is that magic school project people were working on last week dead? I forgot to bump the thread
>>98830778I think that >>98824005 ultimately has the right idea. You don't see wizards in HP chug mana potions, but you do see them misfire spells or fail to cast them properly. Usually due to a circumstances that are pretty easy to narrate/put in a resolution table or whatever, like mispronouncing the incantation or failing to work the wand motions with finesse. With consequences like nothing happens (in the best case scenario) or actively causing yourself harm at varying levels of severity.
