warhammer fantasy would never have gotten there without the rpgs. so does aos
>>
>>98830347
AoS did get the RPGs, it didn't help because GW is a fundamentally different company today than it was 40 years ago and doesn't let people worldbuild for shit now, so we're stuck with the same paragraphs repeated ad nauseam and mandates to showcase the latest releases and nothing else.
>>
>>98830336
>improved stormcasts.
This didn't happen. We got ugly replacements and the best range was squatted entirely.
>>
>>98830345
I tried spreading the fyre news for years but no one listened!
>>
>>98830325
I suppose. I only started looking into AoS around the tail end of Malign Portents, and it took me a couple years to develop any fondness for the pre-Sacrosanct SCE. Now I just feel stupid for taking so long to come around to them. On the merits they were really good kits.
>>
>>98830347
fantasy was perfectly laid out even without the rpg, which just added unnecessary shit for the daily living in the empire only.
you could take that away and the setting would still work, because it's fundamentally similar to our world so you only need to contextualise the magical shit, which the armybooks and rulebooks did enough already.
Meanwhile aos needs a deeper exploration of daily living because we can't use real life as background since everything is so magical and atypical.
In fantasy you can point at the equivalent of the indian subcontinent and already have a relatively good idea of what you can find there from a few lines of text, now instead any and all spots of the map that don't see a particularly deep exploration feel empty because we can't have such placeholders.
It's a way larger challenge that gw has never put effort to overcome, and as lazy of an asspull the last world sounds, it can only improve shit for these reasons.

Soulbound did a shit ton of work showing what it’s like living in Aqshy and the Free Cities any claim to the contrary just shows you didnt read or just don’t care about this like you say you do
>>
>>98830448
I've read enough to know that the broad strokes of daily living in aos do not come from the rpg while the specifics they have added cannot be translated elsewhere.
The rpg is unfortunately not allowed significant worldbuilding, it only has insular examples.

I assume the Valayan version will have a 2+ save. Like how annihilators with shields have a 2+ while the ones with big hammers have the 3+ save.

>Chaos warriors, bound in daemon-runed Eldritch plate; holding great shields taller than a man
3+
>magic dwarf steel
3+

Get with the program
>>
>>98830533
i dont care. the entire model IS armor. from head to toe, its a walking suit of animated armor as thick as a stone column made by the best armor smiths in the realms. a 2+ save should be the least it gets. the shield ones should have a 1+ save. what the fuck are doing where dwarven steel golems cant have a better armor save than their basic footsoldier?
>>
>>98830520
The first year of AoS definitely had a lot of bullshit rules like that but I don't think the hell pit had any. Don't quote me on it though.
This was in the "compendium era" before the first generals handbook. Weird time in general when they hadn't fully defined all the new armies yet (or even the microfactions), so all the rules were still for stuff like empire or high elves instead of like CoS and eldritch council and whatnot. Even brets and tomb kings were around
Some of these meme rules were actually pretty soulful though, like the skaven screaming bell one.

Why is Crusade so popular but Path to Glory is dead (anecdotally, lgs, and social media buzz/hobby projects)?
To me it seems like AoS players just want Spearhead but 40k players entertain narrative more despite the obvious matched play wankery that dominates
>>
>>98830861
Did you try pushing for it yourself? It’s entirely possible they just don’t know it exists
>>
>>98830861
Literally the only time I've heard anyone ever talk about crusade (and that includes online) was when they introduced anvil of apotheosis to it in the end of edition campaign for 40k this year, and that lasted like 2 weeks.
>>
>>98830864
It's in every book? I'm pretty sure 40k squatted it for theirs but it's still played
>>
>>98830545
i dont know why sigmar even bothers to reforge stormcast when he can mass produce weapons and armor in the cities that are stronger than his divine magical dudes
>>
>>98830861
been my experience that aos and 40k players are both about the same as far as engaging with their respective narrative content these days, likely due to GWs insistence on enforcing legends purgatory and other legality issues.

the aos community was a lot more narrative focused in earlier editions, we used to get frequent narrative campaign supplements and there was a much bigger focus on story and fun missions over esports, tactics and tournament legal. we used to even have entire youtube channels dedicated to narrative campaigns that were somewhat popular, like rerolling 1s

i think its just the general state of the company right now that its been doing this big push for tournament focused gameplay and that has influenced all of their mainline games.
>>
>>98830519
Aren't the golems made of stone?
>>
So looking at that valaya statute in the lastest article and asking...
Is she black?
>>
>>98830982
Don't think so but would be incredibly funny
>>
>>98830933
The fact of the matter is that it's more difficult to talk about narrative play than it is comp play. The data driven nature of comp, paired with regular updates (for better or worse), make it easy and accessible to talk about. Conversely, when talking about narrative play, you're essentially relying on uninvolved strangers to give a shit about /yourdudes/ and their stories, or relying on people having a good grasp on extensive settings with potentially obscure details.

This reality tends to manifest in the metrics and incentive structures organizations (like GW) use when building their operational logic. Comp play generates the lion's share of persistent discourse and traffic online, so despite comp players being a small minority of overall players, comp play is what gets focused on.

I mean, I love talking about /mydudes/ to people that want to hear it. I run sprawling narrative campaigns with buddies, so that's the primary way I play these games. But, the reality is that most people in these threads (or just online in general) aren't really willing to interact with it on any level because they have no investment in it.

they took away keep management from earlier editions.

building a list of dudes and earning gold to buy territory n castles was cool as. but now its just a list of buffs u give ur heroes. its so shit and uninspiring.

the aos rules writers now are just utterly incapable of writing rules which are exciting or inspiring thus why would anyone care about it.

darkwater, and the ptg books are all so half-arsed and half-baked. its clear gw doesnt respect narrative play at all and either rushes its supplements, or aos rules writers are too brain damaged to make it engaging. i am more inclined to believe the latter considering the atrocious quality of battletomes and the aqshy ghb in particular.

the aqshy ghb has really punctured enthusiasm for playing aos in my local scene

it wasn't the rpg that did it, the guys at gw sat down and set how the world would get solidified, and what would be left behind of the previous iterations, basically overnight.

That's what I'm figuring, they basically got dickall anyways and witch elves are too iconic to just drop. I'd expect just a dark elf faction to be palced into the game and them to slot in like Fyreslayers into Khazlid (snake ladies, harpy ladies, witch elves will all slot in very well!)

I don't really understand why people find skin so daunting. Painting a face? Sure. Eyes are a motherfucker. But the rest of the body? Na, that's fair straight forward.
A lot of the stuff people paint have well-defined muscle and bone structure, so figuring out where the lighter bits go is piss easy.

Speaking of painting skin - does anyone have any good darker skin recipes? I'm looking to paint some chocolate elves for DoK scheme and I need something around the caramel or mocha spectrum - maybe a little darker.

Real skin tends to have a bit of a warm glow to it due to the blood and tissue underneath especially lighter skin tones and all skin tends to change color subtly across the body like the back of your hand vs your palm. A lot of the paints that are supposed to be for pale skin like rakarth flesh tend to look drab and lifeless. I feel you need really good layering and shading to make it look truly alive and not like paint. Also minis like DoK are harder to paint than muscular dudes like fyreslayers since they have smooth skin and you can’t rely on shades filling in the crevices as much.

I look forward to the new AoS 5 lore where Teclis wipes out every Idoneth squatting them from the game
Meanwhile Eldar get a brand new range of Exodites and TOW get new refreshed High Elves
>>
>>98831629
no, the editions didn't last the same amount of time, 1st, 2nd and third together were 9 years, 4th and 5th lasted 8 years in total, and the last 3 editions were across 15 years.

but also this doesn't really take into account that gw didn't grow or develop its IPs at the same paces across those years either, so we can't even apply this same timeframe to aos, I do hope gw finds ots footing with it and we are going to see a more solid setting going forward though.

Does Temporarily Out of Stock basically mean No Longer Available for Fyreslayers? We know they're leaving...
>>
>>98831795
For vulkites and the heroes that are leaving? Yeah they're not making any new ones lol.
If it's magmadroths or the other stuff that's staying around then I imagine it's just a case of reboxing from fyreslayers boxes to khazalite ones.

GW has never been very consistent with it. Temporarily Out of Stock usually means it's coming back. Last Chance to buy means it's definitely not coming back. But sometimes things stay Temporarily out of stock until they just disappear.

I was thinking more conventional, just the stormcast/chosen armor but with all decorations removed and battered enough to look like the same plates some of the nighthaunts are wearing.

Also no capes or wings or fancy shit, they just drag the tortured soul of the previous inhabitant behind them as that one writhes in pain, tries to escape from the tears in the rear armor, or holds onto the ground in desperation.

>>
>>98832964
I remember talk about this in a thread months ago but my pitch for haunted armour was that they were the souls of warmongering nobles, specifically those too craven to ever set foot on the battlefield yet sent thousands of others to their deaths to fulfill their ambitions. Then they get forever melded to their armours, always at the frontlines of the nighthaunt.
I really like the edgy little fitting punishment theme nighthaunt have.

Being a nighthaunt would be about as uncomfortable as a nubbly wool blanket for someone who was previously a chaos chosen. You'd have to have never opened a Slaves/Warriors of Chaos battle tome to think that Death and Chaos have comparable tortures.

You and the other anon were discussing "Stormcast/Chosen armor". If you meant "heavy plate" instead, then there's been a misunderstanding, but if you legit mean Dullahans made from the spirits and armor of chaos chosen as mentioned, that makes no sense.
>>
>>98833257
I think you misunderstood. Anon suggested nighthaunt haunted armour should be stormcast/chosen. I then gave my pitch about them being the punished souls of nobles.

>>98833212
Everyone who wants an actual story.
>>
>>98833316
Right, your idea makes sense. I don't think the other one does. The SCE are already turning into cursed spirits trapped in armor, and Chosen already have way more going on than the nighthaunt do.

>I don’t think I know anyone nearby who does them
The most important thing is having people you can rely on to keep a schedule and do the work that needs doing (i.e. painting, writing rules, writing fluff, GM-related tasks, etc). If you don't have anyone like that, you're gonna need to either recruit people you know, or meet people through your LGS (online is a possibility, but people tend to be noncommittal since there are no consequences for shit behaviour).

>let me know how you even set up a narrative campaign
We usually do escalating narrative campaigns spread over the course of a year. The smaller initial scale lets people start new stuff or use existing collections, and the time gives people a chance to flesh everything out.
Generally, the process goes something like...
>1. Factions are picked
>2. Foundational lore is created (i.e. key characters, starting locations, goals, gimmicks, etc)
>3. Rules are created, discussed, and agreed upon
>4. GM is chosen (if not rotating)
>5. Schedule is set for campaign meta game turns
>6. Campaign starts
>7. Meetups for battles are scheduled as they happen
>8. Rules & lore are added/amended as needed

I find the campaign meta game (think a 4x game or a Total War overworld) is really the linchpin to organizing what we do. Everyone submits actions to the GM weekly, so participation is consistent even when there are no meet-ups. The GM tracks everything and makes any important announcements (i.e. a battle has to be scheduled, someone achieved some narrative milestone, or an interesting curveball is thrown). The meta game also allows people to drop in and out, or play as many, or as few, games as they want.

This year, I'm currently running beastmen in a Fantasy campaign. The plan for next year is an AoS campaign. I want to run Helsmiths, but I don't think the range will be expanded enough in time, so I'm leaning towards DoK or GSG.

My all time favorite, one of the most amazing shades of all time, incredibly versatile shade is "Vallejo dark grey wash" . Vince venturella recommended jt in a video years ago and I think it's incredible; undiluted it makes an excellent dark tone but it dilutes with water incredibly well as a neutral shade. Doesn't necessarily help you right now but I'm a huge fan.
