Welcome to Open OSR. This is a seperate thread is for open discussions of OSR, OSR-adjacent and retro games. You can talk about all OSR (Pre Wotc D&D, & retroclones) & OSR-adjacent (Mork Borg, Shadowcity etc) games without distinction here. There is a general for those who only want to talk about "first decade" D&D. If that is your preference, you can find that elsewhere. As always, report and ignore any trollingPrevious thread:>>98812951Thread Question: What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?What are your favorite Traps to use in a dungeon?
>>98834858Also Ignore the second TQ, accidentally forgot to delete it when copying template over X_X
>>98834862well what's the new tq?
>>98833508In Germany we have a decent OSR scene, but it is not all Dungeons and Dragons.A large amount of RPGs are translated into German, but English is still very useful because translations for new systems would be terrible to rely upon since they will usually come either later or never, and I hate both.
>>98834858>What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?I am very open to people playing any class they qualify for. I have always allowed Paladins specifically for that reason, even though they can be a headache, especially with new players used to 5e who make problems around alignment.
>>98834858>>98834896>How about those classes?>I let people play paladinslmao, he's just copying the same totally organic discussion from last thread now, not even trying to hide the astroturfing anymore
>>98834858I'm not against paladins, druids, and rangers.
>>98834858>Thread Question: What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?Most of those from ACKS II RR, the Heroic Handbook, and Player's Companion. I don't use those from By This Axe, not for PCs at least.
>>98834941Again with the one liners devoid of content to simulate engagement.
>>98834921>Do you like Paladinsis the new>Do you like StonehellIn fishfag's broken theory of mind's hallucination of what human conversation looks like.
>>98834941How does one realistically play pally in 1E, it's more of a rare miracle unless the DM let's you get one with ability scores.
>>98835087Wow, very insightful comment. Only someone who has totally played in his life and can totally create a B/X character sheet without any errors could come up with a comment this deep.
>>98835087It happens.37.50% chance to get Str 12+.74.07% chance to get Int and Con 9+.25.93% chance to get Wis 13+.Combined together, that's a 5.33% chance, or about 1 in 20.It's the 17+ Charisma that's a doozy. Only 1.85% chance to qualify for that, which drops the whole thing to a .98%, or roughly one in a thousand. So, as long as you roll well for all the other stats and then cheat on Charisma, it's not too bad.
>>98835087Not doing 3d6 down the line. Use one of the other methods Gygax suggested for getting broken ass stats and arrange them however you want, as he also suggested.
>>98834858>What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?You mean standard 3?
>>98834858>What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?I've actually been working on a FF1 B/X game, and the current test party my group is trying out is a Warrior, a Black Mage, a White Mage, and a Red Mage. The introduction of the Red Mage is the biggest change (though the White Mage is also very different from a cleric), and I haven't had anyone test out the Thief or Monk at all, but so far it's been going pretty smoothly. The obvious synergies between FF1 and B/X are doing most of the heavy lifting.
>>98835939I think you meant .098%
>>98835087you don't
>>98835087bear in mind that adnd 1e is 4d6 drop lowest so the chances change from getting said stats in b/x
>>988371334d6 drop lowest would be:61.65% chance to get Str 12+.89.51% chance to get either Int and Con 9+.48.77% chance to get Wis 13+.Or a 24.08% chance for all 4, slightly less than 1 in 4.With a 5.79% of 17+ charisma, that turns into a 1.39% chance (about 1 in 72) of rolling a character that can qualify as a paladin, if you’re rolling all these stats in order.Out of order, it’s considerably higher odds. You have 6 rolls, and need to roll at least a 17, 13, 12, 9, and 9.Getting the 17+ with a 5.79% chance in six rolls is 30.07%. Getting at least the other target numbers is considerably easier, and totaled together comes down to 25.17% to qualify as a Paladin with 4d6 drop lowest, any order.
>>98836385Remember that D&D copyrighted octopus headed monsters but didn't copyright squid headed monsters.
>>98835087Method I in the DMG (4d6 drop lowest and re-arrange attributes at player discretion) gives the best chance of rolling a paladin, about 25%.
>>98836382Standard 4, you gameless larper.
>>98838121They also only own the name Illithid, not Mind Flayer.
Lol, the one-line same/bumpfagging is even more pathetic than usual, which is saying something. And to think you spent the entire last thread crying about how grorious your conversations would be if only nobody were permitted to point out correctly that 2e isn't OSR so that you had to write endless schizo walls of text in response! Kekkkkkk
>>98836385DQ3 had superior classes.
>>98835939>>98837539>1 in 1000 vs. 1 in 4I don't think I ever appreciated just how absolutely shit 3d6 down the line was until now. I've never liked it, particularly when someone rolled a 3 in some score like Con and would spend that entire character's short life sulking.I'm also not a fan of the kind of guys who act like they're hardcore when they do 3d6 down the line. Sure, it's a way to play, but you're still just sitting around a table pretending to be an elf, and not punching bears while riding motorcycles through burning hoops.
>>98838315Thieves were a mistake.Thief skills were an even bigger mistake. Thief skills taking the form that they did may be the biggest mistake of all.
>>98834858At no point does any part of his body come into contact with the door, he just shatters it with pure barbarian swag.
>>98838803You sound like a little bitch.
>>98838747alcoholic anime rabbit hooker
>>988388773d6 down the line is for pussies.REAL MEN don't roll and just demand that their characters have 3's in all their stats and they don't care that they don't meet the minimum for any class.
>>98838942Right on brother.Lets compare penis sizes later.
>>98838863Your DM being too retarded to handle thief skills well doesn't make them a mistake.
>>98838803my personal peeve with 3d6 is that for it to work stats need to be almost completely irrelevant otherwise a bad array ruins your character. But if they are completely irrelevant why have them? But i actually like them because they help painting a picture of the character.I also hate the way 3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x on certain stats for a character to even have a chance of working and not a part of who the character is.I think it's what Adnd did best compared to b/x
>>98839308>I also hate the way 3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x on certain stats for a character to even have a chance of working and not a part of who the character is.I hate how making a character in 3.X is like building a deck of Magic the gathering cards where there's right and wrong choices (kind of expected from WotC of all companies)Also that you can't just "be" the character you want, you have to go through the building process first.
>>98840253>3.X >Magic the gatheringOpen OSR, talk about OSRAny%Difficulty: Impossible
>>98839308>I also hate the way 3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x on certain stats for a character to even have a chance of working and not a part of who the character is.I kind of like how important 3rd edition's stats were. There's this very small sweet spot between levels 4 and 9 where the stats are important, but not too important like they are at lower levels and also not rendered completely pointless by all the skill points and feats and class abilities at higher levels.I think most D&D editions have their sweet spots where all the mechanics work best and the level of complexity hits just the right amount. Where that sweet spot is varies a bit according to personal preference, but I think that most people agree that playing character levels 1-2 typically intentionally suck to some degree and that at some point higher level D&D also fucking blows ass.I don't know exactly where I'd put the cutoff for when B/X starts to suck, especially because it's not uniform. I do know there's a certain point where Magic-Users can go from making the game more interesting to making the game less fun for everyone except them.
>>98840576one quarter of the game isnt a small sweet spot i think it is just hp. There is a point where the hp is just right. In b/x-Adnd i would put it at levels 3-7I kinda wish they got over their wargaming autism and gave a larger hp pool at the start and then a much smaller growth rate like 3dice at level 1 and then 1 or 2 per level depending on your class
>>98838942>they don't meet the minimum for any class. So, it's possible to roll less than a 9 in all four Str, Dex, Wis, and Int scores, and fail to qualify for any class. There's a 25% chance to roll an 8 or less with 3d6, or 1/4. Two times would be 1/16, three times would be 1/64, and four times would 1/256, which isn't actually that rare. What happens then? The character just fucks off?
>>98841460fighter doesn't have any class requirement.
>>98842378In AD&D1, it's Str 9, con 7.In AD&D2, it's just Str 9.
>>98838874
>>98842416wtf? i don't remember that.i clearly remember fighter not having a class requirement.
>>98842657>wtf? i don't know the rules of AD&D!We know.
>>98842671Fuck you I'm older than dirt.I know what i saws.
>>98842657It's pretty understandable. Fighter feels like the "default" that anyone should be able to qualify for.Though, at the same time, it would be pretty rough to play a fighter with sub-9 strength.
>>98842968I swear this was a thing in one of the editions.you'd end up with a shitton of really crappy fighters cause you couldn't qualify for anything else.I'm not crazy i swear.
>>98842990I know in 3rd edition, you needed a minimum 10+spell level to cast a spell, so if you had 10 or less in your mental stats, you were locked out of being a caster, so you might as well play a Fighter. Also, the class requirements in AD&D for Ranger, Paladin, and Barbarian were pretty steep, so failing to hit those and having to settle for a Fighter is pretty common.
>>98842990I had to double-check the books because fighters not having requirements sounds right. But nope, Gary wanted to gatekeep them behind a 9 and a 7. So it's possible to fail to qualify for any class, which feels like an oversight.
>>98842681you saws the clouds anon
>>98843112maybe it was a b/x edition, or chainmail
>>98843177Basic and B/X has "Prime Requisites" instead of minimum requirements, which give them a penalty/bonus to XP depending on how high it was, and even then Fighters still have Strength as a Prime Requisite.Chainmail also didn't have any class requirements, and really didn't even have classes, just unit types.
>>98843252now i feel like i'm being gaslit.wtf does that memory come from then?
>>98843177>Chainmail>ability scoreslmao, he's just plumbing new and ever deeper depths of nogames
>>98843280I've never played chainmail, you ass. i don't have 500 dollars to spend on a xerox printout from the 70s
>>98843266I want to just call it a false memory, but at the same time I was also thinking the same thing and I just checked all the D&D's and didn't find it. I even just checked Baldur's Gate 1&2 and both had Fighters requiring Str 9.I wonder if it's something from some D&D-adjacent game.
>>98843320truly, it is a mystery. perhaps we will never know.
>>98843320I don't suppose it was in an errata or faq?
>>98843266>>98843320It comes from being the perfect mix of arrogant and ignorant where you've never actually read the rules to the game you were playing and now refuse to accept you got something wrong the whole time.
>>98843348It's probably just something that sounds like it would be right. Might even have been a common house rule or something no one ever bothered to check or enforce because the scenario of someone rolling up a character and both wanting to play a fighter and failing to meet their requirements would be incredibly rare.
>>98843432>just doubles down lol
>>98843401I pity you young friend. One day, you too shall be old, and will misplace your car keys in the refridgerator.
>>98843444You should just ignore him. He's just trying to be a troll.
>>98843444>>98843449>Surely there must be some excuse I can grasp onto that doesn't mean I was wrong for years!>anyone who reads the rules is a troll! lmao even
>>98838747Then make a DQ game.
>>98838803I like it when people brag about how badass their games are.>"My last character died to a goblin fart so I had to roll up Bob the Fighter the 32nd">"Oh yeah? My last character encountered an Ass-rape Gorilla that broke every bone in his body and he had to spend the rest of the session in a wheelbarrow constantly begging for the other PCs to kill him.">"That's nothing, my last character realized that he was little more than a perpetually reincarnating avatar, trapped in an endless cycle of pain and death, and that all his efforts to obtain material wealth and societal advancement were simply tying him to the world and burdening his soul, with his only hope to escape the wheel of perpetual misery being to abandon all his worldly goods and the entirety of his previous identity and seek wisdom through the life of an ascetic."
>>98844082>>"That's nothing, my last character realized that he was little more than a perpetually reincarnating avatar, trapped in an endless cycle of pain and death, and that all his efforts to obtain material wealth and societal advancement were simply tying him to the world and burdening his soul, with his only hope to escape the wheel of perpetual misery being to abandon all his worldly goods and the entirety of his previous identity and seek wisdom through the life of an ascetic."then he got killed by an orc
i think it's pretty obvious that you are supposed to discard non functioning characters. maybe hand them to the dm to use them as hirelings or something.though it is not stated somewhere in the 1e as far as i remember.
>>98840736>one quarter of the game isn't a small sweet spotConsidering there's rules for going well beyond 20th level and the game turns into a hot mess past 15, it's pretty small.Though, for some reason AD&D has rules up to level 32 and then later expanded up to 100 while BECMI had rules for what happens beyond 36, when 99% of characters never got past 10.
>>98844887people didnt go past 15 in 3rd edition either and they certainly didnt go past 20 as always the high levels are both half baked and so far off that people dont ever get thereand that is true for both adnd and modern editions
How do you feel about this bit of advice from the Expert book?
>>98834858>What are your favorite Traps to use in a dungeon?I like old traps very close to the entrance that are broken and busted and completely fail, but suggest that there might be really vicious traps further in.A pit trap where the trap door is all rusted and needs to be kicked open, and at the bottom is a skeleton pierced through with needle-thin spikes emerging from the walls but most have failed to reset and return to their starting positions. A guillotine blade that drops down from the ceiling but it's so rusted and warped it gets stuck just high enough to put a nick into the top of the wizard's hat. A tripwire coated in cobwebs that fails to trigger any mechanism.
