My sequel to the pirate frog, Zorn palette dragon.
Trying to focus more on texture and contrast rather than having the smoothest blends. So far it's pretty fun.

weird to obsess over, but the rock texture is really good. was it a dry brush to get that scraped texture?

Thanks. It's actually really simple. Base it in purple, then heavy dry brush with a dark grey followed by a scratchy dry brush of ice yellow.

First model I’ve painted that wasn’t completely ruined. Still looks pretty bad though. What should I do to improve?
>>
>>98836559
To be honest, Battletech minis are not exactly good quality to begin with and you are working at scale that is a bit problematic to start with.

Still, I would add some highlights, right now it looks a bit flat. Even light drybrush would improve significantly.
>>
>>98836489
this doesn't communicate gold well. looks more like stripes. ill be honest, i do love it though.
>>
>>98836489
I'm no expert on NMM but I feel like your shadows are too dark and you should've went for much brighter highlights instead. You know, something like ice yellow for sharp edge highlights or something. I do agree with the other anon in that it looks really fucking cool, you should probably keep going with what you've got honestly

>>98836559
Work on getting flat even colors. Plan the scheme before putting the paint on the model. I know 2 thin coats is a meme, but it's true for colors like yellow which is a shitty transparent paint. It's probably better to do the shiny silver first, then the parts around it so that you can cover up the mistakes with opaque regular paints. Especially in the recessed parts. Consider the 60/30/10 rule for colors as well. each color you add on top being roughly half the area of the one before it. Not a hard and fast rule, but something to consider when you first start if you aren't just copying work done by a professional.
>>
>>98836489
Both other anons are wrong, this looks good and is correct. Deeper shadows and darker highlights just makes it read like he's in a dimly lit environment.
>>
>>98836608
You might want to consider putting something less hard as the backstop if you aren't going to have a fan. You can buy cheap aquarium filter pads or even just paper towels.

Thanks anons. I agree I need to widen the reflections... Especially on the flatter sections (thigh, foot) and clean up that right leg more. But Im going for a dusk lighting so I think keeping the darker shadows will translate that better. That is Ice Yellow (AK) btw on the brightest reflections. I stopped short of doing pure white for specular lights until I have the model more assembled and can see where its best needed. Here's the pack I did my color test on that Im going to start over and do cleaner work on to give some more context to the vibe Im trying to capture. My biggest concern is it looks more copper than gold, but I hope with the context of the base and some wider light reflections I can sell it better.

In that case the highlights would technically need to be red, but that's significantly harder to sell without context.

all of the people saying you can paint acrylics without ventilation are paint eaters. just because it's non-toxic doesn't mean you want to be inhaling it.
>>
>>98836864
I think you need more. Also, there isn't any blood on the weapons, or on the gear, just the skin so it looks off. It's nice fresh looking blood tho
>>

Here's a few tips.
1) Wick off your brush before applying paint if it's thinned. It prevents pooling and allows for easier control of pigment.
2) Undercoating/base coating color choice is dependent of what you want the final result to be. For yellow, it's easiest to base that area as red first as the paint is pretty translucent. If you're doing brown or metal, base it black or a near black.
3) The 3 foot rule. I usually make sure the key lines are highlighted and defined so I can tell what they are from 3 feet away under a normal light.
4) Don't worry about fancy techniques until you've mastered the basics. Trust me, it will save you headaches. You need to learn how each paint behaves, the best way to thin & apply it, etc.

Eh, I don't know anymore. Today I tried using my airbrush once again, after many bad experiences (I am that anon, who had problems with paint drying inside) and this time I somehow had no clogging or inside drying problems (only small amount left on needle after final flushing), probably because I thinner those AK ones much more than usual (4:1 thinner:paint, never went so far before except when trying to do subtle shading) but I noticed something else - needle seems to go outside on the back slightly off center and when I checked front with watchmaker magnifying glass, it appears that on front it also retract a bit off center. It's not the matter of needle being bent since I checked that after pulling it off and when rotated while sitting inside it goes off center at same direction. When spraying just water it appears af if tiny air stream goes back to the cup (not full on bubbles, just tiny stream) and when spraying with strong light, to see the spray cone itself, it looks like cone is oscillating a bit around center axis. I really don't know what couldn't be this time or how I continue to fuck everything up so often.

So they got Still Water and Water Resin 2 parter and Water Gel and Pacific blue. And then there's generic store resin. Needles/nozzles sometime can get damaged/shit from factory with the damage not even being visible by a naked eye. If there's something fucky inside the nozzle, it's very hard to tell. Have you tried using the spare nozzle/needle to see if the problem persists?
>>
>>98837205

>>
>>98837215
Bruh, testing by removing variables that could be causing the fuckery is the first thing you do. Stop being silly and test it out the next time. Is the one that's giving you problems the 0,28 or 0,45?

>>
>>98837249
>0.28 one aka the one already mounted by default out of box
Older manufacturing series, both with Evo and Infinity, can occasionally come over-tightened from factory, which fucks up the o-rings inside. Replacing them is easy as shit, and you can buy them for pennies, but it can cause a fair bit of fuckery with the nozzle and performance. I think HS stopped doing that some time ago (not 100% sure), but local stores sell the stock they have, which might still suffer from that problem. Did you had to struggle to unscrew it for the first time?

Try the different nozzle to see if the problem persists. If not, and you don't have much use for the 0,42 since it's lot bigger, you can take the o-ring from there and put it on your 0,28 to troubleshoot further.

Btw if you end up buying a new nozzle, you can buy the Infinity one. They spray slightly better, but they are also titanium - much more durable. If you do, make sure you also get the nozzle cap, Infinity uses a different (imo better) one.
>>
>>98837281
It's not old model for sure, it have date 09.2025 on it. As for nozzle, I will keep an eye out next time I do resupplying, thanks for the tip (I don't like Infinity cap, however, and how the needle is exposed, unless I can take that protection section from Evolution and place it here instead).
>>
>>98837198
might as well green radioactive goo, you're already halfway there.
>>
>>98837339
>and how the needle is exposed
Just saying, that's a good thing, because you can clean it much faster and better. The cap will also protect it if you drop the airbrush.
>It's not old model for sure, it have date 09.2025
Afaik they stopped overtightening the nozzles sometime around 2025, so who knows.
>>
>>98837144
you can check if the needle is bent by rolling it on a flat surface. if the needle isn't bent but it looks off center when installed in the air brush then there is something wrong with either the nozzle or the needle collet. either way you shouldn't have air flowing back into the cup during normal operation.

Got a bunch of secondhand Cadians and some Catachan recently, going to do them up once stripped. I worked out the scheme on the right a few months ago, but I think I can push it a little further while still keeping it relatively simple so where I can paint large numbers of them.

The question is pretty much how. Some dusty weathering could be good but I'm not certain on how it would go with the pants, and I was also thinking about putting scratches on the armour but it being grey makes me wonder about how they should look. My previous armies haven't had intentional weathering except for some turnip stuff where I just slathered them in corrosion and rust pigment so I am feeling blind with what to do.

What do you guys think?

I think it would be fun to all get together and try to paint a model in a specific anon's style/scheme.
Thought about this after looking at the purplesistersanon's post (>>98839329) and thinking about trying to recreate his style (maybe using that new store model that just came out?).
Which other anons' styles do you like, bros?
>>
>>98838843
Leave it natural, it'll look better. Give it a thorough soak and scrub then leave to dry after; an hour of soak, a pretty firm bristle brush and then leave it to dry for a day after. For the water effect the easiest and cheapest way I can think of doing it will be UV resin; there's other options on the market but they're a lot more costly. UV resin has the benefits of being relatively a lot cheaper and letting you pour and set it in real time with a UV light. There's plenty of videos online on how to design rivers for scale dioramas which I'd recommend you check out.

I designed a mini painting/priming handle. Prior to this i just used random dowels or pill bottles but after 33 revisions and 6 test prints I found one that is very well suited for me.

Spikes up top to grip sticky tack, the top is 23mm so i can fit a 25mm base on comfortably, weighted with 100% infill in the bottom and sparse up top, so its bottom heavy and wont tip, and it feels great in the hand. 48g weight.

Printing a bunch now for batch priming sessions

>>
>>98840215
that checks out. i was borrowing paints, so just working with what i had.
If i highlight white, then auric back over top, could that give a brighter highlight while keeping the metallic sheen? or just stop being cheap and go buy a bright gold
>>
>>98836578
'High quality miniatures' it says on the box. But that can also mean durable I guess because the cast is gummy with mould lines/ slip all over.
>>
>>98840234
Using a handle is more comfortable than holding a mini by the base. I use an old Tamiya paint pot for my handle, works fine for me.
It's also good for airbrushing or subassemblies (cork handles are the best for subassemblies, because you can jam paperclips into them).

I'm not going to do that because I plan on putting moss and grass down with PVA and water splashes will ruin that. Also I'd need to set up a way for the water to be collected and recirculated via the pump which would make the thing alot larger.

I'd say pump it up a bit more. Remember, most of your minis will be viewed under the light of a standard bulb from a distance of about 3 feet.
>>
>>98840861
If you want to be realistic about it, the plasma should be magnetically confined from touching the interior of the barrels, but any contact will result in damage to the metal.

Here's a paper with images that show damage to the T-10 tokamak reactor after running:

Okay. I've been using this Pro Acryl Petroleum Brown for flamers and melta recently, it's a little thin and very glossy, so it goes well over metallic barrels. But it looks like the correct thing to do is specks of bright silver on the ends of the barrel.
>>
>>98840198
no you don't understand. what are you trying to achieve by highlighting your gold with brighter gold? to make it look more shiny right? but gold is a metallic color so you can just use a highly reflective gold paint so that it actually is more shiny. now inb4 some retard who thinks light doesn't reflect off miniatures calls me a troll.

Took a cool photo of all my space marines today. I sorted them based on which kit and pose they were from. From the back:
>row 1,2,3,4: old multi-pose intercessor kit
>row 5,6: assault intercessor kit
>row 7: Dark imperium F sprue
>row 8: bonus row, tortuga, indomitus, forgeworld,
Each row is ordered by pose 1 to 5. Ive got just a few holes to fill, but I'm pretty happy with the variety I have gotten out of these.

Ive still got about 20 unbuilt bodies from the rest of dark imperium and indomitus A and B sprues.

I like using mediums like Pro Acryl's Newsh that turns acrylic paints into a pseudo oil wash. I hate having to mix it each time.

>>
>>98846332
Acrylic washes are simply convenient. 45-60 minutes and you can go with next step, don't smell, don't require either placing protective varnish layer first or being very careful with removal and so on. Oil washes can easily rips off paint layer during cleaning (had few cases like that before, mostly with airbrushed paint - and yes, I waited 2-3 days before that for paint to cure a bit), smells awful and require waiting few days before returning to work. They have their use but are not direct improvement over acrylic washes, just different type of same tool.

But I can bet someone will reply with usual "lol skill issue" reply so why do I bother.
>>
>>98846259

>>
>>98846494
>smells awful
Odorless thinner.
>can easily rips off paint layer during cleaning
>being very careful with removal
Not really, unless you are using AP paints. With normal acrylics careful yes, but no need to be very careful.
>require waiting few days before returning to work
Drain the linseed oil before mixing, and use drying accelerator medium to mix the washes. Most art companies make them, some scale model companies, too, like VMS oil expert. Can easily cut down the curing time to overnight and less.
>are not direct improvement over acrylic washes
Yes they are, in every single metric apart from drying time.

at this point i think people new into the hobby are just too fixated with some unattainable results
seeing éavy metal pictures in the army books and rulebooks used to be cool and something to get you fired up and start to learn the shit yourself
these days people are just served this overly clean 120% perfect social media paintjob and by some weird twist everything is now all about purchasing the best and most expensive gear straight from the getgo

there is nothing wrong with looking at pretty models because they are there to sell products

>at this point i think people new into the hobby are just too fixated with some unattainable results
this is the thing, you like the results, you like the hobby, you are flooded with the best of the best because that's how the internet works, then you see your results and get discouraged

i know because it happened to me, the solution is to stop looking, search for techniques or advice when needed, do your own thing, practice, learn, and spend looking at other stuff a fifth of the time you spend doing your own

Never tried something like this before, so it was a bit informative. Didn't think the masking tape would stand out so much, glue/water probably isn't the greatest sealer for cardboard and especially not when it's mostly water, filler is crucial for doing exactly what it says. Still, good proof of concept; the next will be better. Guess I'll paint this one up, maybe look up some tutorials to see how I can paint the pillars faux marble when I actually get some paint besides primer.

Looks good. I plan on using mostly metallics for my army as well, though I also intend to give them just a little weathering so they don't look too clean. Not too much though. I think some painters really overdo their weathering and damage effects to the point stuff looks like it's never been maintained or even cleaned. I'm guessing you wanted to go for the fresh look? Love the boxnought too. Barrel is a bit split on the bottom; did you not use plastic cement for it?

don't mix metallic paints. the reason they look metallic is because they have reflective flakes in them. if you mix them with regular paints (or even thin them too much) the density of the flakes is reduced and the metallic effect is lessened. if you want to affect the shade you are better off changing the undercoat color or using transparent colors on top of the metallic.

I have a question about so called "zenithal highlighting" - I sometimes see people apply white paint over black primer with an airbrush, before moving to target shades with whatever other method. But, is this really making a difference? I mean, most acrylic paints are fairly covering already, so I'm not sure if this effect will be visible at all, even when sprayed instead of applied by brush.
>>
>>98850570
colors look brighter on white
>>
>>98850570
it's for contrast paints, which are transparent.

Regular acryllics are opaque, I will never understand why you see all these retards adding 10 steps of layers to a cloak when the end result is just the last 2 colors.

Or don't even get me started on "undershading", when you just glop paints on it. Look at this video from Vince:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPQcBtP-khc

In no way does the zenithal he uses at the beginning come through at all at the end, nor does the end result imply that it had any effect on the final finish.
>>
>>98850570
Zenithal highlighting is specifically used for contrast / speed paints.
>>
Does anyone have a good tutorial for making decals on an inkjet printer? I don't know where to begin and I'm terrified of making mistakes.
>>
>>98850570
it can be useful to have a literal representation of how the light will be hitting the model while doing highlights
>>
>>98850849
only if you take a picture first. If you put on your first coat (like Khorne red for instance), it removes the zenithal.
>>
>>98850819
Some use it as a reference for how they're going to place highlights and shadows in a realistic way.
>>
Any paint suggestions for doing a nice jade green cloak? I get choice paralysis looking at all the options available.
>>
>>98850819
As I expected, sadly. I guess "just" layering up with shades will produce better results.
>>
>>98850819
I suspect a lot of it is also because it makes the in-progress model look nicer for a youtube video than one with just flat black primer.
>>
>>98850819
>Regular acryllics are opaque
if that was true there would be no difference painting over black or white
>>
>>98850344
Thanks Shimarin-chan.
>>
>>98850819
you could only write something this ignorant if you'd never painted over black and over white separately before
>>
>>98851268
if you're glazing or intentionally leaving undercoat showing, there is a difference between black and white. But most people are painting coats until the color is opaque, especially for base colors.
>>
>>98851349
do you realize you can just not do that?
>>
>>98851361
most people don't. And yet, 99% of tutorials from even the pros will have you paint over black until you have complete coverage as a "base" coat.
>>
>>98851365
most people aren't preshading either retard

I made the grave mistake of doing eyes on my minis when i was obly 50% done as opposed to having the eyes be the last finishing touch.

Now completing the miniatures is an actual struggle because my brain subconsciously thinks that the miniatures are done and i should move onto the next instead of doing the rest of the highlights.

Anyone else sub-assembling all of their minis' heads and limbs that are too fucking close to the body? A part of me insists it will make the final model look better, but another feels its fucking stupid because almost no one will see the difference anyway.
>>
>>98852066
don't worry about it paying attention to parts most people will never see is what real artisans do.
>>
>>98852066

I was worried about the mold lines, but looking at them I figured they were so shallow and small they probably wouldn't show up once the first coat or two was applied. The only place to be really worries would be lines down completely flat or smooth surfaces, right?

>>98852118
Looks fire. Im about to paint my dreadnought in a day or two and this metallic look got inspired. Ill add some good ol' grim dark and see how it turns out
>>
>>98852111
>I figured they were so shallow and small they probably wouldn't show up once the first coat or two was applied
this is cope. paint has dimension but the dimension follows the topography of the part under it. if you paint over a divot you will just have a painted divot. if you paint over a ridge you will have a painted ridge. the only way to get rid of surface geometry is by taking care of it before you paint, or by using primer that's meant to build up and be sanded smooth.
>>
>>98852178
So how are you supposed to deal with mold lines that go down folds in fabric, like pants and sleeves? Just file down the lines on ridges?
>>
>>98852208
either you spend tons of time carefully scraping them off or you just curse gw for their shitty mold design and accept that you're going to have visible lines.
>>
>>98852118
The paintjob is looking nice and clean, a pity on the seam for the lascannons, and I assume you've got some decal or stamp work to do on the empty panels. Are the sensor lights just colored metallics? A bit hard to tell if there's a gloss coat on it or not.

Also reminds me I've got a boxnaught kit that I intended to use for a joke Venerable Custodian Dreadnought, but now those got Legends'd and instead thought about whether to donate it to a 30k legion instead.
>>
>>98852269
the sensor lights are just colored metallics. the boxnought isn't well put together because it's 25 years old.
>>
>>98852118
What metallic paint did you use?
>>
>>98852425
Vallejo True Metallic Metals. The base coat was Sapphire Blue with a zenithal of Hydra Turquoise. I just hand painted the black under stuff with Vallejo Dark Gunmetal. Everything else was a metallic other than the bases and the purity seals.
>>
>>98852356
In that case, understandable. Oldest kit I've put together was probably the Rhino and that's not quite a perfect kit itself.

>>98852443
The VGC one? It's pretty good, I've been looking into TTC's Doom Metal which is perhaps the darkest metallic I've got but it seemingly comes off as being slightly warmer, or at least the VGC paint in question is colder.
>>
>>98852478
The vallejo game color dark gunmetal might look a little more blue than normal because for a lot of it i was painting over the overspray from the blue/turquoise.

ofc there's red in all of them, you can't make black, brown, orange or yellow, without it, it doesn't mean you would identify any of the colors as red or reddish in the first pic, as opposed to the last one

Just to make sure I got it right, since recently finally got single paint session with two colours from airbrush that resulted in smooth operation, no clogging and no drying inside. I'm trying to figure out what exactly fixed the problem. Which one is most likely to contribute here:

1) Thinning paint much more than what video tutorials often recommend, 3:1 or even 4:1 instead of 1:1 of thinner:paint ratio (was using AK 3rd gen, by the way).
2) Keeping pressure at 2-1.8 bar range (roughly equivalent of 30-26 psi if I translate it correctly), instead of going all way down to 1 bar.
3) Cleaning colours without actually spraying it from the front with cleaner but removing leftovers from the cup with squeeze bottle and just water, then using pipette to move water up and down in the cup to take away what was left on the bottom and THEN finally applying water to spray it out at full trigger, without so called "bubble back" technique.
4) Periodically spraying shortly at full blast after keeping needle only minimally retracted. Tip was almost always clean but I also would then clean it anyway with soft makeup brush and cleaner solution.

If I properly understand what made it work this time, maybe my problems will finally vanish completely.

It genuinely pisses me off. The tech is there but it's actively being neglected. If anything, mold lines and cleanup has gotten worse in the 15 year gap where I was out of the hobby.
