Favorite stratagem is tough. I think it's a toss-up between Steadfast Determination in Fellhammer Siege-host and Unseen Lurkers in Vanguard Onslaught. Steadfast Determination is very simple, but in practice it's so fucking good. A 5+ FNP against shooting attacks. But it works on everything you care about, and it makes terminators just absurdly tough, especially when combined with a Chaos Lord with Bastion Plate (nullify an attack each round), they're basically impossible to shoot to death. Every game I play with my IW I slam that button every enemy shooting phase.
Unseen Lurkers is a lot less straightforward, especially in 11th. It's an 18" lone op for any vanguard unit, and *6"* if they already have lone op. This is funny, because combined with the reactive move in Vanguard (a flat 6") it can make Lictors almost unassailable. In 10th, this always caused headaches for my opponents because Lictors were effectively unshootable (especially since the stratagems are used reactively) but charging them meant losing a character a lot of the time. In 11th it's both better and worse. Better because you can give them an upgrade for a reactive move so you don't have to spend CP on that (or threaten it) and worse because charging lictors is much safer now.
In the end, I think it's Steadfast Determination, just because how often I use it and how fucking good it's been to me.

More narrative AND simulationist elements and more varied and unique army rules even if they made the game a slog and much more asymmetric. The game is definitely cleaner and runs smoother now, but the rough edges they sanded off were part of the appeal for a lot of people. And some would argue while it is a better game now, it's still not exactly a good game so it's questionable if this was even worth the tradeoff.

>more varied and unique army rules
This is just blatantly false. 10th isn't great on that front, but 9th ed has far, far more involved army rules than 4th does, and the few army rules we've gotten for 11th so far has been very good and flavorful. You know what the "army rule" for Black Legion was in 4th? You could take Abaddon. That was it. That was everything they got. Iron Warriors had "you get 4 heavy support slots but 1 fast attack." which was overpowered as fuck because Obliterators and Vindicators were overpowered, but hardly particularly exciting, or even particularly unique, as Night Lords had the same rule but in the opposite direction (and it sucked ass because fast attack as a slot was A LOT weaker than heavy support). Dark Pacts shits all over those rules as far as army rules goes (and that's before going into actual legion rules), as does Death to False Emperor like they had in 9th.

>>
>>98839535
Tau don't really make sense for the type of game that Space Marine is. They don't have hordes of melee chaff besides kroot hounds to surround players with.
This is going to be a problem with Necrons as well but at least they have some options for more elite melee threats. Looking to the Minoris/Majoris/Extremis/Terminus classifications you can only really have things like canoptek swarms and warriors on the bottom ends as minoris threats and everything melee would have to be rarer like wraiths and lychguard.

The only new thing that makes sense with their existing game formula is a horde army like GSC or Drukhari where you can have lots and lots of chaff for a marine to chew through. But I think it is much more likely that they either just go with Orks again, or use mindshackled Orks and Tyranids to supplement a Necron threat.
>>
>>98839937
Every single space marine already carries a primarch's geneseed.
>>
>>98839957
Then why don't we have a tyrnaid based on primarchs
Or is that the role of the norn emissary
>>
File: images (1).jpg (50 KB, 640x480)

>>98839937
What makes primarchs special isn't just in their genes but in the specific warpstuff sorcery of their making, of which only some part bleeds into their sperm and trickles down into their groomed child soldiers.

Nids already feasted on marines genes and haven't really found much that's cool to use except for some genes for optimising fused ribcages as far as we know, which were applied in the making of tyrant guards.
Presumably if they get their talons on the corpse of a primarch, which I think was one objective of their invasion of baal, they could get something out of it, but it's not as straightforward as
>I can haz nidded primarchs nao
also because it's fucking lame

The norn emissary is already designed as a model to be in the same rough weightclass as primarchs, but they lack plot armor, so no matter the already deployed story hooks about one coming for this or that guy, they won't really do much; but the point is, if you're looking for a "nid primarch" it would be what the swarmlord is to a hive tyrant but for a norn emissary, a named one with a legend or story attached, maybe with some behavioural quirk, streak of attributed accomplishments, and distinctive feature like an albino colouration or something.
Nothing to do with primarch genes.
Again, because that would be lame.
>>
>>98839932
Do you like space wolves by chance? You sound like someone I know.
>>
>>98839944
Yes, when I talk about my personal project, and the problem inside my personal project, surely "the" refers to a universal issue.

Again, pretending to be retarded is still retarded. Last reply.
>>
>>98839960
It was more of a power level question since I want my dudes to have a super strong monster leading them.
I don't want characters like primarchs, I want an option of having a giant leading my army.
Norn Emissaries are cool but I didn't know how strong they were in the lore compared to a primarch
>>
File: Norn_Queen.jpg (57 KB, 556x833)
57 KB JPG
>>98839960
What makes norn emissaries especially suited for this kind of special characters is that there's the solid possibility that they don't just get recycled into digestion pools and respawned like all other tyranids, instead it's suggested as a possibility that some of them normally live attached to the norn queen, then detach from whatever alcove or symbiotic spot they have to descend onto a world, and once they've done whatever they needed to do they return onto the ship and get back into their spot.
This is only a hypothesis, but it's a better excuse for having recurring features than
>the hive mind thinks spawning the carnifex with a scar is cool and impressive
>>
Why are company heroes characters now?
Is it because of the update?
>>

The strength of tyranids is all over the place, also because gw hasn't really decided what their role is, because they aren't exactly generals, that spot is still reserved to tyrants, and the early mentions of them were before the models were revealed so they blurred emissary with assimilator, and the rules tried to make sense of another big monstrous creature in the army by making them kind of target seeking missiles, the emissary for characters and objectives, while the assimilator for tanks and monsters.
So on one hand we see them described as suicidal berserkers beelining for a target, or like oversized lictors, while in the other the emissaries are described as very calculating and intelligent strategists.

In their first introduction, we saw the actions of a trio of them: one snuck into an marines chapter armoury and tore apart everything before someone pushed the self destruct button that every imperial location apparently possesses; another crawled into an elevator and showed up unexpected to a meeting of imperial commanders and officials; the third and most famous one climbed onto a mountain and jumped onto a valley in an attempt to assassinate the brand new lord solar leontus (huge missed opportunity because he was introduced just a few weeks prior and this assassination could have been what killed the previous lord solar and brought leontus to the fore), who survived only because he was saved by a milliseconds by his custodes bodyguards, who engaged the norn emissary, she effortlessly slaughtered in short order like a dozen of them, before getting shot down by a custodian gunship and trajann valoris; you decide how that puts her on the power scales depending on how much you wank custodes, I won't get into that because I think power scaling is dumb and the only thing that matters is how much the story makes narrative sense.

in a novel we see a norn emissary take on a less straightforward approach, she used a neurotyrant to cover one planet (or more, I don't remember), into a psychic blanket that gave its inhabitants nightmares about an incoming doom, basically hyping the arrival of the emissary to sow terror and take advantage of the disorder. amongst the visions one marine saw the norn plot to reach guilliman and murder him.
I haven't actually read the book because from what little I saw it was just filler with the names of the new units scattered across the text to promote them, but I think that this norn died because the protagonists sacrificed themselves in an explosion that took it out. and I know that pic related literally happened, the norn stops to look at a marine and he feels the psychic backlash of something looking at him in disgust and spite, only to ignite him and move on.

Was the vision of the death of the primarch's the fear of the marine himself? was the nid bluffing? is it actually a vision of a planned plot? can one actually pull that off?
pointless questions, but the fact they're up support the idea that you can take a norn emissary and put her as hypothetical equivalent to a primarch in a fight or duel

"Professional" just means you get paid for it (it's your "profession"), not that you're good. Just start painting. Take your time and build your skill and confidence. Start with something simple. Terrain, for example, is great stuff to paint as a beginner. A ruined wall doesn't have to look perfect, but it lets you try out different techniques with layering, washes, highlights, drybrushing, painting details, etc. What looks terrible in closeup images can look fine on the board at a distance. 99% of the time you're looking the models from several feet away from an upright angle, not on your 4k monitor.

I posted my schizo head cannon before but the books make clear that every unique Tyranid bioform is the "same" entity since its creation, even when there may be billions of them active at once. Almost like a ship of Theseus situation where each copy of the bioform later shares it's experiences and gathered genetic information with the hive mind, who then "updates" the base operating software of the original pattern, resulting in an entity that is also aware of its past. That's what makes Nids extremely scary, lore wise. They learn and adapt very quickly and make adjustments where necessary.

So, I'm very much a new fag, a lorelet that finally bought his first models. I have a few questions, feel free to call me a dumb bitch if I deserve it.

Are the 11th edition books not in those stickied links, or am I a full blown mouth breather?

Any preferred tips for first time painters? I'm gonna watch a few tutorials on YouTube, but this is by far what I'm least comfortable with.

>Just because something gets digested doesn't mean it's learned information or "personality" disappears.
I wasn't suggesting that, but you can understand how distinctive scars or signs of age aren't really well supported by the recycling system as much as an organism simply keeping on living.

>>98839997
They do this for the World Eaters Master of Executions too, the WE one has a headswap. Kinda funny that WE still doesn't have a generic chaos lord equivalent.

And I'll keep suggesting the albino colouration for a special norn because it's striking, fleet agnostic, and a good indicator of her being a big deal because it might be a sign of extremely long age, as in perhaps millions of years of uninterrupted existence.

This immediately removes the option of simply having her job to someone since she can just respawn, paradoxically granting the thing more plot armor, without having to call in particularly lore breaking ass pulls for nid characters.

Ahh got you. Yeah I can understand that. I think it can work like that both ways! It can be the literal same organism, or it could genetically incorporate scars, for whatever reason, like old one eye.

>>98840328
That's also really cool and I like it. A Tyranid organism millions of years old, the exception to the disposable nature of every other bioform. What kind of creature is that? Are they closer to the hive mind somehow, or perhaps a special connection? Are they so complicated and difficult to make as to make them irreplaceable? How many civilizations has this creature destroyed and consumed? How many heroes killed like a sheep to the slaughter? Are they the Hive Minds "perfect organism", not requiring updating and reconstitution?

The simplest reasons for a continued existence would be that replacing it before it meets something that stops it is moot, and that by replacing it something in its make-up is lost, and since that something can't be genetics and can't be information, because those are meant to be already absorbed and learned, it must be some other esoteric element.

The swarmlord's swords are an example of an esoteric element of some kind, at their core there is an extremely rare crystal that's completely alien to this galaxy and that the hive mind can't mass produce, so there's only ever a small number of swarmlords around, if not just one, and if we assume those crystals are also somehow connected to the psychic print of the swarmlord we can understand in its case how it simply cannot be made the same without also using those same crystals.
We just need something that can't be easily recovered and reused, or something that is out of the hive mind's grasp to rearrange in the specific pattern it's currently found in this norn.
For how intelligent the hive mind can be it ran on a completely different tech tree and may be blind to anything that isn't genetics and number crunching, or at least blind to flukes of quantum bullshit.

But the specific reason isn't important as much as the fact that it is old, we don't need to know why here.

you can always hold on to it and sell later
just dont cut down the spruce
cause New on Spruce (NOS) is much easier to sell than being USED the moment you put your nipper on it it become used non virgin plastic

also dont bother with codex yet
just fill out the army, and play it first you dont really need codex
just use other app like New Recruit or print/keep the datasheet around instead (which came with your kit)
only buy codex if you just want book to read about random fluff (which all can be read online)
codex is really need for people who have to use official 40k app list builder cause official match required you to use it
the launch box is a good way to get into but still better to split the box with someone, sometime the shop will even let you split the box right there and then so try asking your local game shop

for painting
cant go wrong with nuln oil and agrax earthshade
doesnt matter if you dont know what they do yet but they will be useful eventually

Oh so we're using Eldar Daemon Princes rules where they were formed by the very specific niche of The Fall and that emotional energy can't be replicated so a daemon getting destroyed and its emotional energy mixed with the eddie of the Warp taints them so these immortal daemon princes are actually irreplacable.
Back to nids, ancient multi million year old beings can be explained as simply that its easier for the hive to let it climb a capillary tower back to a hive ship than to render it down and rebuild it. The nids do operate like water, following the path of least resistance.

last thing you want is trying to start two different army all at once especially when you are just starting and dont have one single playable army
at the very least get the first army to playable state before moving on to second one
on the army side
admech is a meme, avoid at all cost, unless you are a contrarian and you hate being told what to do, and you want to play admech/genestealer because some stranger on internet tell you not to
then yeah they are great, you will have fun proving others wrong for the rest of time. with HEY I STARTED WITH ADMECH ITS FINEEEE
necros is also a good start, one of the better army to start with and unique enough that you arent another muhreen players
its just that tyranid and ork have been the last 2 armies that was in last 2 launch boxes so they were much easier to get into
but really just consider the aesthetic and vibe first
if you think necros is definitely cooler then go look for someone dumping the necron army on ebay and get that
so yeah consider looking up used army too

Do nids even undergo metamorphosis? They seem to just come out of spawning pools themselves. It would be cool if Rippers eventually pupated and then became Gaunts, but that's not how they work. Nids seem more like BioDrones than full organisms. Except Genestealers.

Do the spawning pools digest them or is it something more complicated. I'm not too up to date on Nid lore
>>
>>98840725
>It would be cool if Rippers eventually pupated and then became Gaunts
It was a hypothesis in older editions that rippers represented larvae of various nid organisms, and the anphelion project started from the study of a few rippers, gaunts and warriors and those alone ended up growing all sorts of other tyranids, structures and even biotitans.
>>
>>98840710
Duh, only retards think the opposite
>>
>>98840735
From what I remember of the most recent lore, harvesters like Rippers and Pyrovoes (and i guess psychophages now) just eat as much biomass as they can, then crawl and die in digestion pools, where the biomass is recycled to make Gaunts/Carnifexes/non-synapse beasts. Maybe synapse creatures have a different life cycle.

I was tempted to buy that starter set even
>>
>>98840990

Nah. I just like a choppier, rougher style, where the focus isn't necessarily smoothness, actually, where smoothness is discarded, but gradients, contrast, placement of shadows and light, etc, are emphasized. I'd still use an airbrush if I had one, for base coats and the like, but otherwise I'll stick to my brush work.

>>98840993
Look better?, subjective. Faster? Yeah very much.

The starter set was rly good actually

TL;DR: Due to drama and mismanagement of Lexicanum much of the staff has jumped ship and formed their own wiki forked from Lex.

https://warhammer40k.wiki.gg/

This is also a good option if you're one of the many being blocked by Lexicanum's cloudflare.
>>
>>98841031
>where smoothness is discarded, but gradients, contrast, placement of shadows and light, etc, are emphasized
All of this can still be done more efficiently with an airbrush if you're competent with it. So again, skill issue.

I'm coming out as a brush elitist. If you majority airbrush your paint job you are simply a lesser human being. Might as well get a machine powered by AI to paint it. I have always stood by these principles and will continue to stand by these principles I only just picked up 30 seconds ago.

Just more rules that made stuff interesting but also causes problems like blast templates.

Vehicle armor values were cool as shit though. Stunning, knocking out, etc.
>>
>>98843236
Armor values were nice but for the longest time you had this weird thing where a vehicles could die to a single hit from a lascannon but a monsterous creature could tank it and keep going at the cost of a single wound.
Its one of those things where throwing a dreadnought against a carnifex would likely see the dreadnought lose because monstrous creatures also had some heavy pen in melee.

And even if it wasn't a regular thing, the fear of losing a big ticket item like a landraider in a single, big hit was enough to make people fearful of using them.
Hullpoints sorta mitigated it but, really, monstrous creatures really should've had some equivalent to the vehicle damage chart
>>
>>98843244
Hullpoints also suffered from glancing hits. I think back in 5th ed lysander could solo a titan. I don't understand why people jerk off the old rules. I have a bunch of friends who do it and it's getting obnoxious.

The WS table was pointless because I cannot remember a non character unit above ws4

The initiative table was also needless because anything with AP that mattered was stikes last (everyone took those.) And anything that ignored this rule was generally considered busted.

>>
There's no reason to spend time highlighting spore mines. And yet I can't not do it.
>>
>>98843257
I mean, there's a LOT of flavor to Armor Values rather than unifying them into toughness and it gave some extra stuff like melta/chainfists getting the 2d6 extra pent BUT it also boiled into the usual 'what is front, what is side' arguments.
Granted, it wasn't 'that' bad when compared to Templates.

The WS table I didn't much mind but thats' because I could easily remember it and did enjoy the interplay of veterans/specialists being harder to hit in return.
I will, however, agree with Initiative.
Orcs being I2 (if I remember right) was the old meme for them being a melee army and you either...
A. Wanted to hit first
B. Have enough toughness/armor to hit last
It was an either/or thing so it being rolled into Charging for fights first/last wasn't a huge issue.

I do miss certain aspects of the older rules (And I did enjoy USRs if only because if you knew one, you knew it on every army) but those got bloated out of control as time went by.

I will agree with USR. Honestly I don't mind the older systems. I just hated GWs refusal to actually use the entire fucking table.

Is went to WS10 why wasn't someone like abaddon WS9?
>>
>>98843488
I think it was the Avatar that had WS 10.
There were a handful of models out there where it was made absurd like that but, realistically, you only ever saw up to 'maybe' 7.

USRs like Preferred Enemy, Furious Charge, etc Feel No Pain were all that was needed but then you started seeing weird things like crusader popping in towards the end that were 'like something else but slightly different'.
Unneeded expansion is what I would call it.
I'd much have those back though as it beats every unit either having a different name for the same thing or just very, weirdly specific rules as part of every unit gaining an ability.
>>
>>98843510
I think only the avatar was above 7.
Heresy and fantasy handle it better where WS table is actually used and planned. Something like terminators or chosen should've been 5. And average character being 6-8. Not the generic 5-6 character, and occasional named having ws7.

My biggest pet peeve with the mid hammer desu. People jerk if off so much, pretending it was like fantasy where you could see the difference play out with the table as your elite unit chews through chaff.
>>
>>98843539
Every system had its issues but really it was one of those things where it would only come into play with specialist units fighting mid-tier infantry (I seem to recall Banshees being WS5 but that may just be a missfire on my end)

Every system had its ups/down but part of the fun of midhammer was just that there were a LOT less moving parts when it came to enemies.
You didn't have stratagems, you only had one army rule instead of the multiple you are seeing with detachments, etc.

But you also had to deal with things like the USR bloat, MUCH slower codex release with mostly FAQs instead of actual erratas, and the Force Org chart which I didn't personally mind but certain armies had to deal with trying to rush minimum troops (Marines for example where you'd either do the Las/Plas squad or just min-scouts)
Granted, you still see Min-troops but it was a more pronounced issue back then I would argue.

New custodes combat patrol is just over 1K points. You can stack the rest of your army easily. Sodality custards have six models, which comes out to two units of custards at 240 points each. Throw in a tank with Trajan Valoris and that's a solid list.

>3 paints
I'm no mathmagician but that appears to be more than 3 paints
>>
>>98843690
Still, 6 paints, a brush and 3 boyz, for 50 fucking dollarydoos
That's insanity
>>
>>98843692
Six paints is all you need.
>>
>>98843693
It's actually only 5 paints because Corax is so bad it shouldn't count
>>
>>98843690
>leadbelcher
that doesn’t count because its a metallic
>zandri dust
you don’t need it for anything so it doesn’t count either
>abaddon black
black is the absence of color therefore it isn’t even a paint
adding all this up we come to a total of three actual paints and three pots that are useless.

Its shit everywhere. Too many people for the infrastructure we have, as an example:
>NSW gubmint restarting voluntary redundancies for NSW Health again, all CEO's of every Local Health District doing this a few months before the state election
>Head of NSW Health saw the writing on the wall and quit on the spot "mysteriously" a month ago
>Now NSW government will be broke for even longer paying out people for the VR and will not re-fill the positions for the people who leave as the short term pain > long term keeping and paying those people
I want to move to somewhere nice like rural nsw where I can have a farm or t*smania
