Play Godbound.

It's fun.
>>
>>98843469
gave it a read
it seems like it'd have some serious dissonance in actual play, since other then these specific powers the PCs are just some fuckin schlubs but somehow noodle armed idiot can smack a farm house over but can't lift a hundred pounds
>>
>>98843469
What you posted is retarded.
>>
>>98843613
I'm saying this honestly: I have no fucking clue what you're talking about.
>>
>>98844283
Okay, I'll bite. What's tickling your 'tism?
The only problems I can see are the "smaller than a large building" thing is vague as fuck and not doing anything to damage is lame but understandable.
>>
>>98845430
nta but having have no impact on combat is a little bit dogshit.
Samson got to kill a thousand men with a donkey jaw and pull down temples alike. Why the segmentation beyond 'Uh, balance I guess?'
>>
>>98845441
>Why the segmentation beyond 'Uh, balance I guess?'
I don't know what to tell you, but it's entirely a balance thing. I'm with you, it sucks, but if it just let you explode people as part of whatever else you're doing then it'd take over the game.
>>
>>98845462
NTA, but at that point it's better to not have that rather than decouple related things sorely for balance and create this sort of dissonance.
Not a good show for a post telling us to play X.
Want to try again?
>>
>>98845478
I'm not OP. I just wanted to know why the power was retarded. Turns out the answer was literally fucking nothing and it's actually fine.
>>
Yeah, except when a faggot player picks the "know everything at least 2 people know" power and slows the session down to a crawl.

The whole point is that Gifts are supposed to be different applications and aspects of divine power in play, some of which are active and some of which are passive.

Just taking Might by default boosts your character over the stat cap (18) in Strength, so I don't think it's that much of a problem.

Also most humans in this game have literally 1 HP and there's overkill/damage transfer rules, so it's not like it really matters that this particular gift doesn't boost combat abilities.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

To be fair Godbound is pretty much Exalted without the inane number-crunching and retarded rules, and far more flexible in terms of setting. So it's just Exalted but better.

I've heard Words are poorly balanced against each other, with some being lackluster and some very powerful. Is that your experience?
>>
>>98849083
>is full of them, though.
Seems pretty straightforward to me.

>>98849198
It's hard to say because Words aren't really meant to be taken alone. A new character starts out with three of them and you can get more later, but some are clearly stronger than others.

Words like Passion and Command allow you pretty much effortlessly brainwash people, Endurance allows you to literally not die unless you get hit by divine power (which is more common than you'd think), and the main non-elemental combat Words like Bow, Sword and Might are all universally very good, meanwhile things Fertility's powers are very situational other than one very good AoE heal and Journeying is very situational by virtue of being all about 'travel'.

"This might is quickly deployed, but not finely controlled enough to help damage rolls or other attacks" is what makes it completely retarded and also ruins the entire point of playing a Herculean demigod with super strength. If you're so fucking jacked you can pick up a small building as a free action the idea that it's impossible to ever use that in combat is dumb. What happens if you drop a building on people? Are you cursed with divine clumsiness that makes it so even if you're in a narrow alleyway or underpass or a bridge and you pick up a fucking car or semi-truck to hurl at somebody that you miss every time? Even if you want to limit the damage this does to not be any higher than you're capable of with your bare hands to avoid people running around with telephone poles as optimal gameplay, there's still better ways to do that. At the bare minimum hitting somebody with a telephone pole should have longer reach than hitting them with your bare hands, and if you can lift cars as a free action as part of movement you should be able to throw them at people far away as a ranged attack. This is how Mutants and Masterminds handles things, it's a comic book game so regular attacks are limited by what power level the party is playing at, but if you have 15 strength you can still lift 800 tons (rank 15 weight) and the distance you can throw something is your strength minus its weight, so you can throw a 3 ton truck a mile long since that's 15 ranks of strength minus 7 ranks of weight giving you 8 ranks of distance.

I understand that godbound is not trying to be a simulationist game but neither is fucking comic book capeshit. You can have the answer to "why doesn't Batman get turned to paste when fighting enemies who can punch superman in the face and hurt him?" be "it's a comic book, that's the genre" and people play along. You CAN'T have that be the answer to "Why the fuck does lifting an 18-wheeler do LITERALLY nothing?"
>>
>>98849522
It's a game mechanical abstraction representing one aspect of superhuman strength, with other aspects being represented by other powers under the same Word, anon. Sure, it abstracts things differently from Mutants and Masterminds. That's not a flaw, it's a difference.
>>
>>98849532
The flaw is that part that lifting literally anything as large as a small building is explicitly prevented from having any combat effect.

In-game what happens if you lift a small building or 18-wheeler truck as a free action, spend your remaining movement to get above somebody and then drop it on them? Literally nothing, because the ability to throw around a Sperm Whale like a frisbee has been reduced to a minor flavor power.

That's why it's a flaw. I'm not saying it needs to copy what M&M or other games do, I'm saying LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE besides it's current implementation would be better, which is why nobody fucking plays Godbound.
>>
>>98849522
Anon, all it means is that Thews of the Gods allows you to Juggernaut/Kool-Aid Man through walls and any other non-magical material without struggle or having to attack, but doesn't boost your damage - that part is already taken care of by taking the Word itself which gives you the HIGHEST POSSIBLE STRENGTH RATING BY DEFAULT. And nothing in the rules says you can't use the thing you're lifting as a weapon OR that the environmental damage is negated. If you the character break a supporting pillar of a building, the people inside are probably gonna fucking die.
>>
>>98849542
>If you the character break a supporting pillar of a building, the people inside are probably gonna fucking die.
That would definitely fall under the no-fun-allowed clause of "This might is quickly deployed, but not finely-controlled enough to help damage rolls or other attacks", if running around like the Kool-Aid man smashing things with your face as a free action could hurt people you'd also be able to use the things you picked up as weapons and just drop them on people or throw them.
>>
>>98849541
>>98849551

Anon this is a game where normal humans have 1 HP and the average dungeon bosses are literal god-like entitties, at a certain point the 'throwing a bigger rock' at people is not that efficient and a GM is just gonna rule it as a narrative scene rather than combat
>>
>>98849551
Breaking a support pillar doesn't sound like an attack to me.

All right anon, let me give you some math to help you understand how autistic you're being about this.

In Godbound, health is not redued by damage directly a lot of the times, it goes through a damage conversion chart. Roll + modifier. 1 on the chart does 0 damage, 2-5 does one point, 6 to 9 does 2, 10 or more does 4, with damage transferring to nearby enemies if it overkills. Because of this, the actual health pools are rather modest because it uses hit dices instead of hit points for enemies. (If you transferred a D&D 5e Tarrasque it would only have 33 HP, for example)

Picrelated skill from Might bypasses this rule entirely and turns the damage frmo the roll 1:1 (hence it's read 'straight'). This is powerful enoguh that even at Level 1 with a lucky roll you can literally one-shot a Weak God which has only 15 HP. But otherwise, the actual damage you can do with each attack is capped no mater how high you roll above 10.

Do you understand now how meaningless your arguement is?

>it's another "generic system user spergs out about a specific system placing 'arbitrary' restrictions on an ability for balance or thematic reasons" thread
>>
>>98849586
Many such cases
>>
>>98849551
Except wouldn't that be covered by the first ability on the list?
Descent of the Mountain explicitly states that you can throw anything you can lift in order to attack with it. >>98845716

The thing you're asking for clearly exists. The line under Thew of the Gods seems to just clarify that it's not going to add some extra bonus to an attack or damage roll. Not that you can't use it to attack with at all. Otherwise it'd use the phrasing from the other ability on the list that explicitly says it can't be used for violent ends
>>
>>98849320
Uh oh, I think somebody taught the no-games how to swear like a big boy.
>>
>>98849586
have you considered that the restrictions for "balance and thematic reasons" are still lame and retarded?
also all of Kevin Crawford's shit is also "generic system" stuff anyways.

>Pick up a building

So is this a cartoon game? Like Loony Toons? Because if I wielded the Eiffel Tower as a bat and hit the local representative of the council with it, I reckon they'd not get up if they weren't a cartoon. But cartoons can survive anything.

This is literally the same gay shit Pathfinder 2E does where every feat/spell/ability has a flavor text description about how it's totally badass and awesome and then the actual mechanical description makes sure to limit it so it can never actually be useful or do anything in combat regardless of how little that makes sense.
>You ascend to Lichdom, the pinnacle of arcane might and undead resilience!
>you get a +1 non-stacking bonus to rolls against poison and disease (you can still catch malaria and tetanus and need to use your wizard fort save against them)
>now your punches do 1d6 of a worse damage type that half the undead or construct enemies in the game are immune to instead of 1d4. Also you have never once ever tried punching people as a wizard to begin with and aren't going to start now

Yes, which is why the dedicated 'pick huge shit up' power in >>98845716 specifically says "This gift allows the object to hold together and the godbound to avoid sinking into the earth, but the object is too unwieldy to use for violent ends."

>No attack buffs
>Because if I wielded the Eiffel Tower as a bat and hit the local representative of the council with it, I reckon they'd not get up
Godbounds can kill the average mortal as a free action, at a certain point it's just flavour how you do it.
>>
>>98850125
Alright, I'm getting. I don't really like super hero stories though, so let's say my guy fights an enemy guy who can not be killed for free. How does that play out? What's the squeeze?
>>

>>98850140
Then it's regular combat. You either attack or use a Divine Gift (a 'spell' if you will) to damage or restrict him or do other nasty things. It's an OSR game so it's based on old-school D&D rules modified to fit the theme.
>>
>>98850163
Yeah but how does it play it out? If my guy can lift entire buildings up and smash them down he can probably also do some gnarly shit in combat, like tearing a guy's heart out with his bare hands, or shooting a kamehameha.
>>
>>98850173
>If my guy can lift entire buildings up and smash them down he can probably also do some gnarly shit in combat, like tearing a guy's heart out with his bare hands,
NTA, but that's what the other abilities in the category are for >>98845716

Fists of Black Iron lets you punch someone for a d12, and then Loosening Gods Teeth lets you apply the full d12 for damage instead of using the table. And you'd also add your Strength, which for a Might character is +4 because their Strength starts high.
So when atypical attack is dealing 1-4 damage, the might character can punch someone for 1d12+4. Certainly enough to rip someone's heart out or collapse their ribcage.

And other abilities there would let you do things like toss buildings, or crush someone who can't dodge. All it requires is using all the different abilities that represent being strong, rather than just one of them.
>>
>>98850090
Try to find the words to elaborate on why you feel those rules are retarded.

>or shooting a kamehameha.
Yes, pretty much. Except the kamehameha has to be themed after your powers (this is excluding the combat gifts of each individual Word of course)
>>
>>98850222
I feel the rules are retarded because they are retarded.

Also another key is that Godbound is not really about the combat, it has a lot of it but it's not really a tactical TTRPG like Lancer or even Pathfinder. Godbound is about being Awesome Dudes that can do things other people can't and create change in a dogshit broken world and then become gods. There's a whole series of rules about forming your own cults and religions and gaining power from that and enacting large-scale miracles based on that power.
>>
>>98850249
Alright, so no reasoning behind it, just vague feelings?
>>
>>98845721
Damn
I hate anime and powerwank.
Guess this is a skip for me.
>>
>>98850204
>And other abilities there would let you do things like toss buildings, or crush someone who can't dodge. All it requires is using all the different abilities that represent being strong, rather than just one of them.
Wasn't there also an option for using a Word you have for things you don't have a specific Gift for, as long as those things fit the Word's themes, albeit at a greater cost than if you did have an appropriate gift?
>>
>>98843469
New Edition when? How do we get the creator to come back to Godbound?
>>
>>98850314
You didn't read my post.
The rules ARE retarded.
I feel that is the case, because it IS the case.
>>
>>98850455
Yes that's what Miracles are, basically you can achieve a lesser/more costly version of another Gift's power as long as you can reasonably explain how your Gift is able to do it, or use a Gift in your Word you haven't obtained via levelling up.
>>
>>98850608
What would you even change for a new edition? I feel like it's perfectly serviceable as it is. Maybe I would add some tighter rules on Dominion gain but other than that as long as you have a GM with common sense it's not really that big of a problem, and the game is flexible enough you can easily just make more custom Words for yourself.
>>
>>98843469
What makes it fun?
>>
>>98843469
This really does look retarded without the context of "you already punch with the force of a falling house by default".
>>
>>98851624
Personally, I'd be happy with KC just updating Godbound's rules to make them more compatible with/easier to convert to his Without Number series. Yeah, there are rules to convert them (and a whole bunch of other OSR games, to be fair) in Worlds Without Number, but it can get a little fiddly when you've been gaming a while and the brain gets fuzzy. Nothing major, just inconvenient at times.
>>
>>98853076
Yeah that's fair I guess.
