Brainlet here needing your help- which is mechanically better, rolling with advantage/disadvantage, or just adding pluses?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm running an OSR-influenced campaign using 2d6 rolls as opposed to 1d20, where the players are about to get a one-use artifact that will let them roll their skill checks in one of three ways:

A: Roll 2d6 + skill level (which ranges from 0-4) + attribute mod with advantage (i.e. comparing the results of 2d6 rolls), or

B: Roll 4d6, pick the best two, then add skill level + attribute mod or

C: Roll 3d6 + skill level + attribute mod

Of course B is better than A, but I'm wondering if it's too powerful even for a one-use artifact. I'm also wondering whether C's potentially bigger number outweighs the benefits of A and B.

Fuck you I had to write that out before I got it.

B is probably fine for a one use artefact, C would be better for an artefact you intend to have them use more often.

>A 2D6 + stats (w. advantage)
a skewed bell curve clustering around 8,9,10
>highest 2 of 4D6 + stats
clusters 9,10,11, much more likely to roll 12s.
>3D6
clusters centered on 10 and 11. it has 50% odds of at least 11, and 30% odds of at least 12
>are any of these worth it
take the best case (3d6)
if i NEED a 10, this gives me coinflip odds of that. if that situation comes up ONCE and it's life threatening then this is a great artifact to have. if its the usual OSR slop where you're supposed to die then its kind of retarded because ill just make a new guy

If it's a single-use artifact, don't worry about it. Once they use it, it won't matter anymore and if they don't use it, it never mattered.

All right then, I'll go with C then, since I plan to have a quest where they can make the artifact multi-use. Thanks, fa/tg/uys!

If it's single use, it wouldn't matter even if it added +1 million to the roll. Just pick one.

As a one use artifact, it honestly doesn't matter OP. As long as it isn't an instant 'I win' button, any of those would be fine. Getting down into the statistical trenches for a one-time use item is simply not worth it.
Besides, even if it weren't one time use, you could easily say that repeated use has degraded its energies/warmed up its magical faculties enough to alter the bonus to whatever you feel is now appropriate.

always use +
the advantage system is gay and made for brainlet masses
