>In the Dark Imperium series, The Emperor say to Mortarion that he may still be redeemed

There's something to this that always fascinated me. I think its mostly dumb of course, because HOW can Mortarion and his legion be redeemed. On the other hand, how can they be redeemed? What do they do to make it up and be back in the imperiums good graces. I wonder if anyone has ever written fan fic of newly turned Loyalist Death Guard led by Saint Primarch Mortarion. How would that work? How would Imp factions view a redeemed Death Guard fighting with them. Would they get to keep their Plague aspects but its Big E magic?

Something worth talking about

There seems to be this weird running theme GW has nichely done were Chaos Marines are forgiven. There's this example, and the Lion actively going out to find Fallen and redeem them. I dont know what they're planning, but I do think its worth discussion and fan canon

Overall I think its gay and retarded for anything that corrupted by chaos to be redeemable like plague marines or any of the other legions dedicated to the big four. They're too far gone and called the Lost & The Damned for a reason.
Some of the fallen being redeemable because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and didn't renounce the emperor or fall to chaos works, but some of them are going to be irredeemable. The DA have an entire setup of chaplins for torturing fallen so they narc on themselves, they're not largely inclined to repent.

That being said I saw these here a while ago and thought it was funny so there's this at least.

I have always thought chaos worshippers should be able to have regret and try and make amends at most but it's pretty hard to deal with the lobster claws, probably just going down in a blaze of glory fighting chaos (which they do most of the time anyway) is the most they can manage

I think GW is "testing the waters" with loyal space marines with traitor legion heritage.
They have hinted at it, but this is different. This is something else.

I do believe that the concept of a loyal space marine chapter that isn't "hinted but concretely confirmed" is on the BL bucketlist of emergency book series to put out if BL sales start to dip too low.

I hate this but it checks out.

Redemption =/= Survial.

In medieval times a condemned man would be visited by a priest, and given the chance to repent, and recieve God's mercy.
Then the next say they would still hang him, because God's mercy is on the soul, whereas the laws of men concern the body.

as long as they keep it around here, im good.
they aren't rejoining the imperium, they aren't hanging out on terra, they aren't joining the crusade.
Im hoping its more on a redeem on a soul level. Forsake Chaos, regain who you were, and go die in service to humanity. Push back whatever enemy threatening humanity and Big E will protect your soul as you die.
Picking specifically Mort was a weird choice. Cut off from Nurgle, i dont know how long any of them would last being so junked up on disease. Alpharius is the best choice, being the only non-daemon prince but if i had to pick one it'd be angron. Have the eldar show up again with a bradmore extractor and let him chill the fuck out for a bit.

This sort of happens in Daemon World, older BL novel. Its a pulp fantasy homage but one of the characters is an ancient former champion of chaos who has renounced his position and it seems to work, no confirmation about getting his soul back or anything like that but he is actively trying to spite the chaos gods. He's an unusual case but it does appear to be possible. Fun read.

I'm sure it will be applied selectively and most end up with them dying but we already had the Anchorite being a thing even being able to invoke the power of the Emperor to flame broil his old Word Bearer buddies before hobbling back into his hole

The Soul Drinkers already went this route. Like all interesting lore, it’s been memory-holed as this thread clearly proves. Though I’m kinda glad it hasn’t been done more, we got the one story/Chapter and it was good enough. Keep modern GW away from it

AI or ESL?

As for the question, Mortarion has lost his soul and is literally just an intelligent appendage of Nurgle now: there is no redeeming him at this point without Emps somehow both retrieving his soul and undoing the fact that he is currently made of demonic warpstuff.

The Soul Drinkers never quite forsaked their souls though, they were just deceived by a corrupted chaplain who convinced them that mutations from this weird power were totally a good thing, and they ultimately turned on him once it was clear Tzeentch was calling the shots. Same deal with the OG Raptors, the Raven Guard clones who were genetically corrupted by the Alpha Legion but still remained loyal. Navar Hef was a mutant astartes (seriously mutated, with claws and a tail and shit) who nonetheless served faithfully despite the Space Wolves being understandably alarmed at the obvious mutations. His final fate is unknown, but he presumably degraded like the other mutant clones and got mercy killed by Corvus.
