Is the official Stargate RPG good?
>>
No.
Just like it wasn't the previous 500 times you've asked

Yeah. The biggest hurdle though is onboarding players to GURPS.
The Stargate conversion notes really help.

Licensed RPGs have never been good and never wll be.

G. I. Joe, Dark Heresy and WEG Star Wars disagree.
I hear that the GoT RPG but I can't speak to that personally

It surprises me how little content the franchise has outside the shows themselves (board games, vidya, comics, novels, etc).
To me it seems like a gold mine of potential.
To be fair there are some vidya but they're all either shovelware garbage or trapped in development hell.

>WEG Star Wars
How much handwaving would you need to run stargate in WEG star wars?
>>
Indeed.

It is, but only because of the amount of destinations you can dial. Basically everything that matters from the show can be condensed into one thin book. But a good GM could go in whatever direction he wanted with places never seen in the shows.

I played the Alderac d20 Stargate RPG years and years ago. Had some good fun doing it.

>USAF leader, Pararescue from Superman School and party medic/leader
>former SF now secret agent dual Explorer, Soldier, and Sniper, did skydiving in spare time (I played this one, he was a mix of Indiana Jones and James Bond)
>NASA scientist nerd (female) who was in astronaut training before transfer to SGC for deep space radar telemetry (played by a girl too)
>Civilian diplomatic type attached to us, fear of heights

It got into the realms of black comedy when we had the third mission in a row that required a HALO drop and rather than have the diplomat scream all the way down again we just hit him with a zat for the drop and woke him up when we landed.

We also learned to always bring C4. It has countless uses. Blowing up Jaffa, spaceships, opening doors, digging holes, felling trees, starting landslides one time. Just great stuff.

I played it for a bit, and it's fine. I mean it's obviously held back by being based on 5e, but they do some stuff that I like a lot in it.
-Zat guns do levels of fatigue instead of 'stun' damage,
-Your class only goes to level 5 and after that it's point buy so you get all the iconic abilities of a character type and can then freeform spread out, or use the variant rules to point buy from the start
-a lot of the powers you get from your class and point buy later are interesting and run really well.
-lots of proper rules for running things other than combat, such as overland travel, infiltration, science challenges and all sorts of social engagements, doesn't just leave it to gm hand waving or one roll. Honestly pirate the pdf and read these, they can be easily adapted to other games that lack rules for anything but combat if you want non combat 'encounters'
-super easy to build all the weapons you want, just assigning the right tags, although they can be samey (every assault rifle will probably feel the same)
-staff weapons have a range of 5/60, so they take disadvantage on anything between 6-60m. A good way to have jaffa shoot and miss a lot from range like the show. Honestly a lot of weapons and mechanics fit reproducing the show, not a realistic version of Stargate.
-in that vein, they have a "season outline" you can even use, a 24 session skeleton you can use to build your plot around, complete with side/comedy ones

Bad things
-hp bloat, obviously, it's 5e. They get around it by just multiplying your weapon damage at certain levels, so you can still kill higher level jaffa and enemies in short firefights. But it can lead to odd things where a jaffa can be just one level higher than you, so he deals double damage, or vice versa.
-default setting is alright, but basically set up for you to be freedom fighters who the Stargate program is supporting, not real SG teams. Easy fix, I even ran my game as the Russian Gate program, but can be annoying.
