For STs: what kind of game would you run and what do you want from your players? For players: what kind of character are you making and what do you want to happen?
>>98877887Now that I think of it, DE is as close as we'll ever get to mage (marauder) game.
Shark here. Today's game was quite uneventful.Basically three things happened (I'm keeping it short but I don't have anything interesting to add):>Emil, the Nazi hunter who partnered up with vampires to steal their powers had us visit the nazi laboratories. They were showing prototypes of weapons for the incoming war, and to take out night folks. Basically an unspoken way of saying that the army could annihilate the sabbat if we intend to betray them. Me and Catalina (alongside other sabbat vamps) were asked to show our powers in front of the scientists Catalina had nothing to hide since Emil saw it all already. The other vamps outright lied because they were all horrified when they saw the Schwerer Gustav. A weapon capable of utterly destroying any elder at the command of a single human. Shark just shapeshift one of their arm into crinos form, because the other powers they either intend to keep them secret or would require killing everyone in the facility.>The Giovanni have called a personal Blood Hunt on Catalina for killing one of their own. An elder piloting a ghoul even made a visit and also sent a letter (from the black hand) to make it official.>We got a summary of the next steps of Rasputin and Anubis' plan. We first intend to eradicate the Tremere in Vienna, because they probably will snoop into our plans and snitch to the Camarilla. We will also deal with the Brujah Council. Work out a cease fire or something. Then we will "convince" the disparate conglomerations of princes in Eastern Europe to join the Sabbat. After all of this is done we will invade Poland because the weakest EU prince resides there, and this will send a message of Sabbat supremacy. Afterwards we will turn our attention to crushing the courts of France and England. Also>Emil has "requisitioned" Mathilda. Basically gonna use her to capture jews>Catalina wants to take the mantle of Defiler, so she's starting her own cult of debauchery
>be me, seneschal for the local prince>the prince shows up in a goddamn clown costume because its halloween>some mutt went on a rampage through the trainyard and then china town (this is very bad)>prince orders the local lupines to be brought before him in his penthouse office>orders the sheriff to deliver the message to them>the elder lupine is brought up with some other guy and they are both shit-faced drunk>the lupines claim that it isn't one of theres>they argue with the prince who is still in his goddamn clown costume over the extradition of the mutt>the sheriff shows up with some hobo>the lupines don't know who he is>turns out its some newly changed mutt>the prince lets them go>clownface.jpg
>>98878175Gotta start castrating those dogs, bro.
>>98877887I would rather not start the thread with ERP bullshittery. I have enough drafts of my "dream games" I need to finish as solo games.

So I’ve heard that V6 allows for Tremere to choose between Blood Sorcery and Necromancy. Can anyone confirm?
>>98878295it was in the playtest yes, if this stays in the next playlist we don't know
>>98878295this is in the playtest, but neither the tremere, blood sorcery nor necromancy are in the playtest

>>98878573acording to dark age mage the giovanni and rossellini are both somehow related to the celestial chorus in the area and cappadocious choose them out of all the necromancers (and they are seemingly a lot of necromancer families given that the giovanni are still finding new ones) because they are so awful people which made them perfect pawns to genocide his own clan for his quest for godhood
>>98878598>necromancers for a millennium before they became vampiresWaitWas Tremere copying Giovanni?
>>98878637Although augustus been a vampire for 15 years longer than the og tremere. No as far as we know they didn't knew about each other or had any contact*. the giovanni also planned to become vampires as they been necromancy only hedgemages and saw vampirism as a update unlike the tremere who became vampires by accidentthe truth is that augustus used to be a legit antedeluvian at the start of the game and clan giovanni been the clan of death since the first city, but that was stupid and nobody cared about the giovanni so they decided to retcon that at the end of 2e, but apparently they couldn't think of giving the giovanni a backstory that isn't very similair to the tremere so now we just have two clan of former "spell casters" turned vampires usurpers*ars magica also had tremere be from a pluto cult, but then ars magica tremere are also the necromancer house something that is completely gone in wod (unless you count v6) and the giovanni are not mentioned at all in ars magia so you could argue that the two used to be a single character before vtm 2e

>>98877887>TQI've come to realize that unfortunately, my dream game is one which I am simultaneously the one running it, and the one playing in it, but those two versions of me can't communicate with each other and spoil the other's fun. It's not even that I hate my group, far from it, I think they're a wonderful group, easily top 10th percentile of groups in the world. But I'm very autistic and perfectionist, so my perfect game is hyper-specific and I'm pretty sure only I would enjoy it. And that's really not what TTRPGs are about. More realistically? As ST, my dream WoD game is probably a long-running Hunter: the Vigil game that starts in the very early 90s and goes for at least the entire decade (in-game), if not several. Watching the Hunters grow from rookies to grizzled veterans in a monster of the week adventure with occasional major plot arcs.As a player? I honestly just wanna reprise the Ventrue I played in my first actual long-term VTM/VTR hybrid game.
>>98877887>TQI am of the opinion that the Brujah are the vampire clan that is closest to actually being human still, and would be making a character who maintains a high humanity without being a christ-cuck about it.She is going to play these silly undead vampire games, but she isn't going to attack people in alleyways just because she is hungry when there are alternatives. She is going to get into bloody fights with members of her clan and members of others for the sake of maintaining a healthy level of respect amongst her peers, but she isn't going to harm kill or steal from mortals simply because that is expedient. She will follow vampire laws because they suit her, but won't give into their depravities. She lives forever because she has to, but she will dance and enjoy those nights because she has the warmth of life still within her. She is a vampire, not a cold dead thing. Then she will die, because life as a vampire is a life where actually having standards and feeling passions transcending the selfish concerns of delusional self importance is one where your very existence is profoundly offensive to those vampires that didn't choose to be dead and made up a billion excuses to be cold while they were at it.There simply are not enough stories of the tragedy of a vampire trying to have a high humanity in games. Too many vampire players that ive run into just love being Diplomacy-pilled social manipulators or grotesque horror-movie villians.

>read and play MtA for a few years>terrible sphere bloat, slavish adherence to other splats, classic spells need multiple spheres>read MtAW for a month>dripless lore, moderately more comprehensible than ascension, less powerful than MtA>read DA:M for a day>mostly great factions, brilliant and comprehensible magic system, classic effects no longer need 2 different spheres, only minor interbalance concernsCan m6 or whatever just use the F/P system? Literally rapes both sphere systems and in the case of Ascension makes paradigm way more important and in your face. Also will a DA:M player's mind be totally blown if I read the latest Ars Magica?
After learning about the history of the Texan petrochemical industry, I am convinced that the Garou Nation's crusade against the despoilers of Gaia is fully justified. If anything, the World of Darkness is not nearly as wicked as our own.
>>98881026Every time someone sucks the dick of the Pillars system, I feel compelled to remind them that the strength of Pillars is also the weakness of that system. It might be far more specific and tailored for specific flavours of magic instead of being an awkward one-size-fits-all system, but that means that if you want to play a character whose magic isn't covered by one of the existing Pillars, your table needs to invent a whole new Pillar to cover that character's magic, whereas any character can be slotted into the Sphere or Arcana systems because of how broad and non-specific they're designed to be.Also, Mage the Awakening is absolutely as powerful as Mage the Ascension if not more, especially the second edition.
>>98881061How bad is it?
>>98881061>If anything, the World of Darkness is not nearly as wicked as our own.The World of Darkness is our own world but darker by definition. If you've found something that exists in our own world that the lore-as-written doesn't cover, you should assume that the thing in question still exists in WoD and that it's probably even worse.Just because WoD's lore doesn't talk about Epstein's pedophile ring that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist in WoD and that WoD is a sunny, rosy place where pedophilia isn't real. In fact, WoD Epstein probably did even nastier shit, because WoD is our world but darker and with supernatural shit.Smug posturing about how the World of Darkness is a hundred times brighter and nicer than the real world ignores the entire conceit and intention that the World of Darkness is definitionally a darker reflection of the real world.
>>98881084The real-life version of Pentex sent a helicopter to a trailer park to shoot up a protester's home. Bear in mind, the protester in question was a mother on a hunger strike, not an Uncle Ted sort. Thankfully, only the family dog was injured.
>>98881092Nice try, Nephandi.
>>98881128What makes you think the fictional version of Pentex wouldn't stoop that low?
>>98881092most people saying this probably understand this but god does it make me groan
>>98881128>sent a helicopter to a trailer park to shoot up a protester's home. Bear in mind, the protester in question was a mother on a hunger strike, not an Uncle Ted sort. Why? I'm serious, what's that supposed to accomplish?
>>98881092It's more about how despite the writers best efforts, real life comes across as more fucked up.
Do supernatural friends/associates also fall under allies/contacs?
>>98881080The strength of Spheres in MtA being omni applicable is a greater weakness than than Pillars being limited. Necromancy in MtA is like 3 different fucking spheres and if you want to use ghosts as well you need a 4th sphere. Entire character concepts are locked away at high combinations of spheres and this is WITHOUT taking into account m20 sphere bloat.>Whose magic isn't covered by one of the existing PillarsIn a world where Pillars overtook Spheres, this basically wouldn't be a problem, there would be enough word count and added depth to make people actually give a fuck about a given Tradition or Craft's paradigm beyond the stereotype. It would also fix all the retarded character concepts of "muscle wizards" or other bizarre paradigms that stemmed from m20>Also, Mage the Awakening is absolutely as powerful as Mage the Ascension if not more, especially the second edition.Archmastery maybe, but they're limited to creating Rank 2 beings in 2e as an example kek. Can't make souls. Even Mummies and Changelings get better shit than that.
>>98881026Even DaveB thinks DA:M is a better magic game than Awakening or Ascension. He invented the system.still thinks ars magica is better.
>>98881193Those are more often than not a separate merit you stack on top of whatever else. Stuff along the lines of >Odd Friend (3 dots)>You have made friends with another supernatural but you do not get to rely on them as an ally or contact. For some reason you there only place that spells out that you can stack multiple merits to represent a single thing is mage, so expect some fuckery and discussion at the table, just suggest adjusting the cost to fit how powerful they are and you should be fine.
>>98881215Sphere bloat isn't the fault of the Sphere system itself, it's a problem with an interpretation of the system by the writers. Someone else could write a version of Mage the Ascension using Spheres without the bloat, it isn't inherent to the system.Pillars are better in an ideal world that has a Pillar for every single possible paradigm, but that doesn't exist. On a homebrew level, it's easier to glance at a single spell and decide what Spheres are required to cast it, than it is to construct a Pillar for a unique paradigm in order to determine what spells a mage of that paradigm is capable of.>It would also fix all the retarded character concepts of "muscle wizards" or other bizarre paradigms that stemmed from m20There's an entire Tradition which martial arts wizardry is extremely important to and that Tradition wasn't invented by M20, it's also a Tradition that isn't covered by any of the Pillars and would require entirely new Pillars to represent. Meanwhile, whenever you want your mage to cast a spell that isn't represented by the books, you can just ask your ST and they can just spitball the Spheres required using their own judgement.I'll take a flexible low-on-flavour system that some writers interpret in retarded ways, over a rigid system with a limited number of high-flavour options that can also be interpreted in retarded ways by the writers. There's nothing stopping the writers from making retarded Pillars, some of which are more powerful than others or lack obvious spells which they should 100% have.>make people actually give a fuck about a given Tradition or Craft's paradigm beyond the stereotypeIf players are incapable of generating their own flavour and need prepackaged Pillars in order to roleplay out how their characters cast magic and can't impose limits on their characters without rules telling them to do so, that's a them problem. Spheres trust that players are able to bring their own sauce to the table.
Just how sensitive to vitae are woofs, anyway? I've been floating vaguely the idea (inspired by a movie I saw recently) of a cult that slips people heavily diluted blood from a sleeping methuselah. Would woofs sniff that out instantly or would they actually have to investigate?
>>98881092So I'm guessing in WoD the Black Furies got Epstein?
>>98881061Man, why didn't I think of that? I would be on the board by now. Oh well, back to data centers.
>>98881092>WoD's lore doesn't talk about Epstein's pedophile ringWhat do you think the Seventh Generation was based on?
>>98881307There's no official rules for werewolves being able to differentiate between blood and vitae. Maybe if they roll enough successes on a Primal Urge roll, you could allow them to do so. You could also allow Scent of the True Form to distinguish between blood and vitae, maybe.https://www.wyrmfoe.com/189/scent-of-the-true-form/
>>98881307>Just how sensitive to vitae are woofs, anyway?most of them puke it out if they drink it but that's it> heavily diluted blood from a sleeping methuselah. Would woofs sniff that out instantly or would they actually have to investigate?they would need to use the sense wyrm gift to even notice anything wrong with the ghouls and even then sense wyrm does not seperate between a guy who worked 9 to 5 in a factory, a fomori prince or a vampire of any age (it cares for your humanity rating being below 7 and nothing else) it only tells you that there is something wyrm tainted and werewolf players are told to be careful of false positives because they are very commonthere are of course some better investigation gifts, but those are rarer and if you are asking base template then the answer is not at all ghouls smell like humans
>>98881191That's because real life is more impactful to us, by and large. For a grounded human who is attached to the real world, every real tragedy will always hit much harder than a fictional one. Someone who cries over a fictional death but has no strong feelings about a real one is unmoored from the real world.
>>98881357he is asking about ghouls those are covered if you have 4 successes
>>98881357interesting that they made a wa20 gift that mentiones the two revised splats. v20 and c20 ignores that imbued exists but has their generic demons named after dtf ones while m20, wo20 ignores that both exist entirely
Does anyone have any favourite Werewolf one shots, either official or fan created? I want to check some out to see how they're put together.
>>98881449Technically only WtA adjacent, but, IMO the St. Claire Contract is the best one shot WW ever put out.
>>98880698Yes, but with Koldunism, Spirits. Also she's a gigantic spider.
>>98881092Old WoD would just blatantly say "There's orders of magnitude more child abuse and child porn happening here and guys thinking they're doing good are 100% complicit in it." where as nu-WoD is trying to do mental gymnastics about how the scientific institutions have nothing to do with anything bad happening (to own the anti-vaxxers). It also alleviates any reflection of one's own beliefs when everything bad that's happening is because of cartoon villains, rather than retarded nepo babies and an ethno-religion who fundamentally have the same mechanism of determining "good" as you do.
>>98881478>when the garou are so cool they had to constantly add warnings in the book to tell the st to not let them overshadow the plot about normal human glowie pcs and project twilight
>>98881402Shit is inconsistent and I doubt anyone in the writing team cares enough to keep that shit consistent. Also who the fuck uses the Imbued?
>>98881296Sphere bloat is basically just going to happen because of the nature of how the spheres are written. That it can get worse because of writers doesn't mean that high XP costs for otherwise basic effects aren't intrinsic to the system. I don't really care that it's easier to homebrew a new Tradition/Craft if the base system has to be shit and broad to accommodate that.>There's an entire Tradition which martial arts wizardry is extremely important toMuscle wizard is not Akashic brotherhood, it's when some guy has a character concept like "my paradigm is strength and i do all my effects because i am strong :D" or "i think im in the truman show!", basic dripless paradigms that are almost marauder tier in simplicity made worse by m20's explicit inclusion of it. Anything that discourages that is great. It's also not a leviathan effort to make an Akashic Brotherhood F/P and would be infinitely better than the sphere system for all purposes.>muh roleplay rollplayNo one said it's impossible to have flavour with spheres, it's just the F/P system is way better. We're playing roleplaying GAMES after all, so a system that gives actual weight to paradigm is great. Ascension has had decades to try and meaningfully integrate paradigm into the game fantasy that the game delivers and has mostly failed miserably.no response for necromancy requiring up to 4 different spheres as well kek. I wouldn't respond to that either.
>>98880667Honestly? One of the reasons I enjoy VTM is that it doesn't spend most of its time in alternate dimensions. Because it's so focused on the real, material world you have to consider material circumstances and logistics. It makes keeping the Masquerade relevant, and in my experience, restrictions breed creativity.I think most other oWoD lines use the Umbra as a massive crutch, both to bypass any practical considerations with keeping the setting secret and plausible, and to serve as a dumping ground for any and all out-there ideas a writer has. It's so broad that it's everything and nothing all at once, so I've never been able to get into those games. I think it being so prominent and all-encompassing defeats the point of having a "real world" urban fantasy setting.
>>98881655-shrugs- sometimes they are fun especially when your players don't know what imbued are
>>98881708>no response for necromancy requiring up to 4 different spheres as well kek. I wouldn't respond to that either. If you want to cover every possible concept related to necromancy, then no shit that'll take a lot of Spheres. if you just wanna fuck with ghosts and raise corpses as your servants, then Spirit alone can cover that.Alternatively, just make it a Minor Sphere.
Is there a reason why the Danislavs could learn up to lvl 3 gifts while normal kinfolk can only learn lvl 1 gifts?
>>98881775auspex helped them to find higher ranking spirits to pray tell them of their blight and enslavement to who reported that to grandfather thunder and grandfather thunder gave them a exception to fuck over the tzimisce as the shadowlords themselves already failed. you have to remember that thunder is also the totem of sneakily backstabbing shit for gaia>A pack of Garou ventured beyond the patrols of Borgo Pass a generation later. They were appalled to uncover the disgrace inflicted on their Kinfolk. They peremptorily launched an attack on the count, but they were soundly defeated>The father of their family often ventured into the dark woods to pray for deliverance from the cruel Tzimisce that bred his family like animals. Spirits of the night answered his call of distress. Helearned to distinguish the many occult forces waiting to aid him by means of his vampiric sight. Many had sworn fealty to an even more powerful force — Grandfather Thunder himself.>By the mid-14th century, the Danislavs will use Thunder’s Dark Gifts to overthrow Count Florescu. The count’s mansion will be shattered by thunder and lightning from the heavens, and the Danislavs will claim his fiefdom as their own. Their triumph will be short-lived. In 1399, several Tzimisce will unite to destroy them. >The Danislavs also have another mystic power, though it is treated as an out-of-clan Discipline for purposes of experience-point expenditure. From the servants of Grandfather Thunder, members of this family are able to learn Shadow Lord Gifts up to Level Three, though they refrain from demonstrating these abilities openly. They must learn these Gifts by makingpacts with spirits in the Umbra. Using these Gifts requires the expenditure of Blood Points in place of Gnosis. There are five Gifts listed for this tribe in Werewolf: The Apocalypse — treat each one as one level of this Discipline, in ascending order.

>>98881179Frankly a lot of these companies were ran by petty, evil, and vindictive men at the time (still are but you can't do that without going to jail now)
>>98879686>There simply are not enough stories of the tragedy of a vampire trying to have a high humanity in games. Too many vampire players that ive run into just love being Diplomacy-pilled social manipulators or grotesque horror-movie villians.I get you though I disagree about the Brujah inherently being closer to Humanity. I don't think that should be a clan-based thing. but if everyone played that kind of character, it'd be as boring as a roster of 4 pathfag mass murderers for lolz. I think that there's a lot of ways to skin that cat. One of my favorite PCs of all time certainly comes off as a Diplomacy-pilled social manipulator, but there was a lot more going on under the hood. Likewise, I enjoy giving even degenerate Sabbat fuckheads an occasional reminder of what they were; what they are but ran away from. Right now I'm playing in a game where we have a Tremere that just really wants an out of unlife that just isn't possible. Which I'm hoping will escalate to tragedy of the highest order when the shoe drops on the fact her old friend is in fact a Hunter.

It's also more like you're fighting in a doomed holy war off of the promises of your ancestors while everyone on your side can neither agree nor actually take any steps to swing the tide to your favor. A lot of the horror and woe is me elements come from the chud Garou trad society, you being unreasonably violent and enraged when people don't respect the alpha wolf (you) making it difficult to keep relationships in your life, and everyone around you being encouraging you to all in on a death cult that degrades you as an individual so that you can be a better suicide bomber for allah- uh I mean Gaia.
>>98882125Why settle at 85 when you can reach 100?
>>98882182This isn't anything new. People have always noticed the Wieck games cluster together thematically, as well as the Hagen 2 and kinda DTF. DTF is weird in that it's got aspects of both parts of oWoD.But yeah, the games were designed in such a way that they would have very different themes and appeals. It's why cross-splat never became standard, and why oWoD remained in the unhappy compromise of "kind of a shared setting, kind of not". You can argue that was a stupid decision, I might even agree with you, but it was a decision made over 30 years ago. Between oWoD and nWoD combined I can say I like, without any major caveat, 5 maybe 6 of the major splats. It also used to be pretty common for people to be chill with the idea that different splats appealed to different people, and it's fine to have your preferences and your own curated WoD. Really I blame the wiki-diving lorefag tertiaries for this repeated confusion and frustration about how oWoD is very dissonant when combined. Everyone else figured this shit out decades ago. Play what you like, cut the rest.
>>98882330It's personal when you were born and exist solely for the purpose of fighting an unstoppable apocalypse. It's not identical to the horror of Vampire or Wraith, but the point is that there's still a lot of misery and suffering to be found in life as a Garou, that could be described as personal and horrific.

>>98884847The 1st masassa war unironically made more sense than the 2nd. For the 1st it was a betrayal from Tremere after like decades of planning. The 2nd was the OoH jobbing despite striking first, because Blood Treachery is a story for mages and in world of darkness the protagonist always gets their shit kicked in. Or rather it was supposed to be a stalemate of mutual annihilation but it's more like a plotpoint that exists but is rarely mentioned by literally anybody and basically completely ignored by Vampire.

>>98885253The first reason is not a behaviour that all Kindred do and it doesn't outweigh them being literal corpses animated by the very essence of murder. The second reason is why a vampire who lives for long enough does count as Weaver-tainted, but that doesn't cancel out the Wyrm-taint, it's just another layer of taint. The third reason is actually a compulsion caused by the blood of Caine, vampires are metaphysically driven to turn on their closest kin in monstrous ways, that's the literal source of the Jyhad. It's all a symbolic repetition of the first murder and once again, very Wyrmish. You're talking about dead people who are animated by the curse of the first murderer, who have to suck the life out of other humans to survive, who are driven to turn on their own just like the first murderer, who are at risk of permanently losing any trace of humanity and becoming monsters that exist solely to kill and feed, and saying that they have more in common with the spirit of stagnation than the spirit of death because some of them survive for a long time and some of them do a couple of things associated with stagnation.>>98885259Cite a source, a Humanity 6 vampire still pings as Wyrm-tainted even if they've never murdered a single person.

>>98885367>NPC lore mages forget they don't have to attack vampires at night or that their paradigms allow for long distance nukes
>>98885400And yet a mortal human or kinfolk can do the same without issue. Hmm.

>>98885411You you agree it's completely arbitrary mechanics and not backed by anything narrative.
>>98885418What's arbitrary about a literal corpse being animated by the cursed blood of the first murderer innately carrying the taint of the spirit-god of death and incapable of hiding that taint as soon as they start losing their grip on their humanity?Makes perfect sense to me.
>>98885426The fact that you can't tell the difference between dead and undead, for one. The fact the only definition of "losing grip with humanity" includes the VERY human act of mild civil disobedience, for two.
why is it always non mage players who insist paradigm is this monumental limiting factor that conveniently makes it so their vamp/werewolf splat (always vamp/werewolf) doesn't get BTFO by them?
>>98885482to be fair if you haven't read and thought about mage and only heard about it you might come to the conclusion that based on how the fluff reads and what redditors repeat Paradox and Paradigm matter. It's like being told about vampire20 and thinking that in actual gameplay humanity is this super central thing as well as scraping together vitae. When in reality both are pretty trivial.
>>98885482Because every time we investigate we find out that mage "players" have something like "Glowing circles appear in front of me and let me do things." as their paradigm in these retarded hypotheticals.
>>98885482The subjective reality of the WoD says the splat you're playing right now is always the weakest. Vampires are warned about werewolves. Werewolves are warned about vampires. Mages don't have this because their whole gimmick is being the only ones who know the WHOLE truth. So, it created weird assumptions about the system.
>>98885518Mages have this for Wraiths for some reason, ever since 1e Mage hypes the fuck out of how dangerous the Dark Umbra is as if Mages don't go to the High Umbra and contend with Demon Lords and the like.
>>98885457The fact that the corpse of a person who has been killed is animated by the cursed blood of the first murderer doesn't change the fact that the corpse is a corpse, a life that has ended. It's only able to walk and talk thanks to the most metaphysically meaningful act of destruction to ever occur, that is the sole reason why the dead thing is undead. But you're just going to say that the murder of Abel is completely irrelevant and then have the gall to claim that I'm the arbitrary one.
>>98884847Hello.
>>98885514,which is of course an entirely acceptable chaos magic-esque paradigm even if it's really more of an instrument. Just like "I will things to happen and it happens" is an acceptable paradigm. Or reality-hacking aka "I edit the sourcecode of reality and this happens now." The idea that you can not construct a fitting paradigm for a hypothetical mage to perform an effect is idiotic. Asking for a paradigm in a hypothetical is a waste of time, unless your hypothetical is about the flavor and roleplaying of a paradigm.Even if you move into the realms of more restrictive paradigms you'll find that you can justify almost fucking anything, which is the point. Paradigms aren't the balancing factor, they are the flavor of your mage which may or may not incidentally restrict you. It informs the roleplay and flavor of your abilities and how you should go about assembling your effects. Both an etherite and a hermetic can fireball you with forces 3 prime 2. The hermetic will on average have more mystical instruments, and as a mystic can discard his earlier. This doesn't mean an etherite can't have "psychic ether field manipulation" as an instrument and conjure fire from his mind. Even a technocrat could use the anthropic field principle thing and psionics, though that's generally considered distasteful.
>>98885511>redditors repeat paradox and paradigm matterEvery redditor plays as a vague paradigmer. Every time they play as a Technocrat they're a "psionic" Technocrat who doesn't have to use technology. Thinking paradox and paradigm don't matter is the most reddit thing you can do that your campaigns might as well be all about fighting to give all trans people in the world their preferred sex with a mega concert ritual. Every soicuck talks about how paradox isn't a problem and how mages can get 100 successes to solve any problem. Most discussion of Mage is by and for vague paradigmers. Vague paradigmers are single handedly what make me want technomancers to genocide all other mages because you're all too fucking retarded. I want to kill all Technocrats but this single issue alone makes me willing to reconcile with them.
>>98885482Because it is, third worlder? It's the constraint of "you can do anything, why don't you?"Every person reading this is fully capable of killing the president. Why don't they?>buh buh there's reasons, illegal, unethicalNot relevant, (you) want to talk ONLY about capabilities and every single person reading this CAN do it, so why don't they?
>>98885482>>98885514My Paradigm is that the Powers of Love and Friendship and Justice will prevail against Evil
>>98885623This is literally how the rules are. Sorry that they work this way and it upsets you. I agree that the game would be much better if paradigm mattered and Paradox mattered. It doesn't. Based on the actual rules of the game, it just doesn't. That's the point.I do not care if I get one point of paradox or a five point backlash. It simply, by the rules of the game as written, is not very threatening. The same for paradigm. A technocrat is totally canonically allowed to be a psionic, even if it goes against the flavor. There is no real advantage, aside from being more coincidental, to restrictive paradigms. Note that the original text sort of implies a game approach over a fiction approach, where in the latter you may argue for mages paradigm matters even if the system does not represent it. Even then I would tell you chaos mages exist, and even a hermetic is likely to have a justification for an infinite amount of total bullshit. Only technocrats and so on get raped by this.
>>98885511I mean, you're making the game more boring for yourself by treating paradigms like wallpaper. Of course mages are all going to feel the same and like they're nothing more than different combinations of Spheres if you're not going to take paradigms seriously. It's on the players to make paradigms matter so if paradigms don't matter in your game, you're the problem.
>>98885623>Every time they play as aRedditors don't play games. Most people don't play games, which is why they talk that way. They are nogames nogroup ronin caitiff orphan faggots flailing in the dark.At best, they get their D&D group to try a one-off and then dickride that warped, inaccurate experience until the wheels fall off in loudly posting to others about "how things go" in this game system.
Non Mage players are like "muh paradox muh paradigm" about being nuked from afar when literally every single paradigm would allow that
>>98885645Suspecting that this "guy" is a particularly autistic redditor or an actual LLM because the "Paradox does not matter" creep has been posting every time I've checked this thread.Don't respond to either an LLM or a "person" trained off of the wiki, because as a reminder, most LLMs can't scrape the books due to basically none of them being OEM or OCR scanned adequately so they can only intuit the game off of the wiki (which is inherently inaccurate and lacking in rules due to copywrong faggotry).
>>98885548>somwthing that isn't even confirmed as true is relevant Keep on mind, there are kindred that disagree with the Book of Nod.
>>98885675Yeah but the least that you could do is actually describe the sweet-ass ritual that your character is doing to kill a motherfucker, instead of just going "Forces 3 Correspondence 3 to nuke that ass."
>>98885654I actually agree with this. What I mean is that on a fiction level you can assume for there to be a given mage which can pull off the effect you are describing, if you are just doing hypotheticals. On a systems level, about every mage can do it.On a.. chronicle level? Like, playing an actual chronicle of Mage, you are just flexing with your flavor. It's on you to research hermeticism and have a handy list of pre-written rotes, relationships and rules within your paradigm. But you'll have zero system advantages of John Reality Hacker who can justify every effect with "I edit the source code of reality." and John Reality Hacker explicitly exists within the fiction, as does John Chaos Mage.>>98885676llms absolutely can and will scan pirated copies of sourcebooks and if you tell chatgpt right now to look for an obscure rule in mage the ascension 20th anniversary and give you the page, it will most likely work.

>>98885676It's just a white-roomer.Paradox "doesn't matter" in white room scenarios where the theoretical mage will only ever cast a single vulgar spell and will only accumulate a single point of Paradox (or maybe more if playing Reckoning rules M20 or Revised instead of non-Reckoning M20 or 2e). Paradox does matter in actual chronicles where it accumulates over time and you have to deal with playing an actual character, not a white room caricature who starts the chronicle with Prime 5 and a Periapt.

>>98886547You need to try more RPGs if you think this is a WoD-exclusive problem. Any RPG built around a specific setting (unlike D&D, which technically has a default setting but has a bunch of various fantasy settings for you to choose from, and a culture of making your own) is going to attract lorefreak autists by virtue of having a fixed setting with a lot to read. It's simultaneously weird, but also extremely fucking familiar (because it took a lot from stuff that came before and in turn, future settings take stuff from it), which is the sweet spot for NoGaem lore weirdos. This is exacerbated heavily by Bloodlines' resurgence as a cult hit in the 2010s, often via YouTube lets plays, which introduced people who aren't necessarily into TTRPGs to the setting. Combine that with how easy it is for any old dork to record themselves reading an old WoD book and giving their own shit take on it, and you've created a magnet for the potential men of the TTRPG community: "lore guys".
>>98886616>we have spacebattles linked in the opTo be fair it's a story thread link.

>>98886847I think spheres could be saved if they just had good rules for paradigms, foci and so on. My take would be to add certain rules, conditions boons and so on to foci, practises and paradigms. We already do that to a small degree, but it needs to be expanded greatly. Technomancers are the masters of coincidental magic, but are really bad without instruments and their instruments are rather limited. Mystics are the most freeform but incredibly vulgar. Ceremonial magic is super good for long rituals. Chaos Magick just has no boons for all its versatility. Things like that.

They are what the Paradox flaw chart AND the flaw writeout suggests. Minor flaw is a sneezing attack. A moderate flaw is something like losing the ability to speak coherently or exuding waves of heat and cold.Severe flaws are things like clothing in your vicinity vanishing, or your face vanishing (but you keep all senses)The chart literally tells you the duration. One turn for a minor flaw, as many turns as paradox for a moderate. Up to several days for a severe flaw. I didn't talk about others. If your ST decides to be far more severe than what the rulebook says then he has the right, but he's still being uncharitable to say the least.

Similarly, clothing falling off doesn't have a duration, it doesn't suddenly hop back on the mage after a duration ends. When suggested durations for these flaws are listed, it says things like "may stick around for a while," "tend to last for a while," "can be up to several days." You're taking a few specific examples and declaring that they're absolutely all-encompassing for all variations of these flaws.Once again, your extremely rigid interpretation of the rules betrays that you're not interested in the World of Darkness as an actual game that is played with a group, with loose and flexible rules that are intentionally poorly defined and open to interpretation so that the Storyteller can create obstacles and complications as they see fit. You see a concrete, inflexible system to be optimised for white room simulations and winning internet arguments, and any Storyteller as a referee who must follow them to said rules to the letter or be declared an asshole.

That is not equivalent.I cropped trivial flaws because it was awkwardly positioned above that chart. Regardless, a minute and a minor inconvenience is the intended scope here and it's irrelevant. If your ST is making trivial flaws that seriously inconvenience you for a long time, then he is not playing by the guidelines.I am taking a few specific flaws to extrapolate an intended severity to conclude it's not that bad. Your pants turning to ash is very annoying and probably doesn't undo itself but it's not the end of the world, and neither are the other moderate flaws listed. The severe ones are where it starts to get annoying. If your ST grants more severe flaws, then that is not the intent.I have zero fucking idea how your storyteller is going to play world of darkness with you because I do not make assumptions about that because that is retarded and pointless. If I say "Paradox in Mage is toothless" then I mean that the suggested and seemingly developer intended danger level of Paradox according to the mechanics of the game played out straight is not so bad. What a hypothetical ST could rule I will try to leave as ambiguous as possible, sticking as close to the rules text as possible, because that is the only frame of reference we two share. I can only look at the example effects that are canon, the canon damage, the canon durations and say "according to the book..." and then continue with other mechanics that also exist in the book(s).
>>98886846Auspex or Protean devotion for VtR. The idea is that a group of kindred used that ability to ambush their rivals by bursting out of the ground before branching that into a wider combat methodology.
>>98887100but wouldn't it be cooler if you were better at buffing yourself because of your restriction?
>>98887216Not if it means there's a limited number of paradigms with hard rules that players have to choose between, instead of using the Sphere system to come up with whatever they want and imposing their own limitations that fit the concepts they're playing.
>>98887206That's a solid idea, IIRC, Unmarked Grave already gives you a rough notion of activity above the grave. So it could be a pretty cheap one.Alternatively, why not make it a fighting style that has basic Protean and Auspex as pre-requisites?
>>98887135The average person discussing Mage, maybe. But I don't think that such people would even be interested in playing Mage in the first place.
>>98887216It wouldn't be unfair to assume that a good ST would be more lenient with what spheres can achieve in the hands of a mage with a narrower focus. The limitations of a paradigm are a gentlemen's agreement between player and ST, so it makes sense that the positives would be too.

>>98887534Spheres are functional as is, as long as you're playing with a decent table, and just about every fix that I've seen in this thread is a downgrade that revolves around the premise that no one can play Mage as is without optimising the fun out of it and that magic can only ever have any flavour if it comes prepackaged in the form of Pillars. So no thanks, I'd rather make minor adjustments as necessary to Spheres at my table and play my characters according to their paradigms instead.
I wanna know, how can I rp as an aloof person with a neutral tone? I wanna act like some mix of Makima and Luna Lovegood, but I can’t help but being humorous with too much emotion. It’s harder than I thought to play Shark from a silly sociopathic goofball to a slightly dead inside alien with a boner for warfare.

Pillars are really good at giving flavour, but ideally Spheres would be retooled so that basic effects don't require Sphere 4 for whatever reason, and that restrictive paradigms actually give a bonus rather than purely a negative.
>>98887584On my end the DC for my ability is the target's willpower and there is no save for the target. That being said in the M20 book the mechanics for resisting a psychic assault is a Willpower roll (DC 6) with each success countering one of my successes.

>>98887715That's the minor adjustment. If you think the Spheres required for a particular effect are dumb, change them. You don't have to completely rebuild the system from the ground up to make hanging spells require Time 2 or no Sphere at all, instead of requiring Time 4. As for "restrictive paradigms purely being a negative," I don't consider that a massive issue. Considering that the Sphere system can be used to concoct almost any spell you can think of, having a few self-imposed limitations really doesn't strike me as a terrible loss.

>>98888054>That's the minor adjustment. If you think the Spheres required for a particular effect are dumb, change them. You don't have to completely rebuild the system from the ground up to make hanging spells require Time 2 or no Sphere at all, instead of requiring Time 4You actually do need to rebuild that from the ground up because it's not gonna be just 1 sphere, it's not gonna be just one situation and paradigm rarely ever matters for sphere effects. 99 percent of sphere bloat is not because of paradigm.

A example of what I mean by my rp:When we were shown the Gustav cannon the idea was to send dread in the heart of every (NPC) vampire that not even elders could withstand the Nazi army if it turned against them. I played Shark as amazed and happily excited to see this weapon of war. I would believe it if I was told that both of them were actually faes. How do you make someone unnerving? (Shark used to be quite the creep show, but the cannibalism bit got old fast)How do you make someone insidious? (And it can’t be anything sneaky since Shark now barely has any subtlety)Shark was all about enjoying life. Mostly through eating people. But I want to completely subvert that. Like say you strapped Shark to a machine that forced feed people to him to generate lots of vitae, so you could make a maximum of ghouled soldiers. Old Shark would have loved the machine. It’s heaven for him. New Shark wouldn’t show it, but anyone who could read their emotion would find that New Shark would consider the task a chore. It’s only secret in the way that a raccoon is a secret. No one is actually hiding raccoons from us. There is no grand conspiracy to suppress knowledge of raccoons. We catch glimpses of them, sometimes. More often we see the signs of their passing. We find garbage cans with the lids popped off. We see the refuse strewn about, and it tells us a garbled story. Yeah, we know about raccoons, but on the other hand, if someone asked you how many raccoons you saw last month, or when you saw one last, you might not be able to answer. If you got asked how many raccoons there are in the city, or if you needed to find a particular raccoon, you wouldn’t even know where to start.

>>98888913>Does that last part work too in voice only? You’d be surprised. Your facial expressions slightly shift the shape of your mouth as you speak. You can actually tell when someone’s smiling while they speak if you know what to look for.As for making someone unnerving, the most important part is that your behaviors and actions should make people doubt their initial assessments of anything you do. When regular people say “if you say x, I’m gonna hurt you”, they usually mean that they’ll be quite unhappy. But if Shark says it, they should be legitimately unsure. That’s the important part! It shouldn’t be obvious that she’ll hurt them, since that just makes her dangerous. They should feel like they need to reassess every time, and having to reassess constantly makes people nervous—that’s what makes a character unnerving.
Word Beyond (lvl 1) (universal suggested)When traveling through the Umbra, Moths often feel the need to leave information for their fellow Moths. This Gift allows a Moth to create a recognizable sigil out of whatever's handy. A spirit in service to Coyote teaches this Gift.System: In the Umbra, the Moth (by rolling Wits + Expression, difficulty 6) can create a marker out of available materials for any Moth who come by. The number of successes indicates the conplexity of the message that can be encrypted into the marker, which can be decrypted by another Moth by rolling Perception + Occult (difficulty 7). Carrion Call (lvl 2 pathos)Pathos Moths are intimately linked to death and the dead. They have a sacred duty relating to the corpses of the slain that demands that Pathos' children be able to find the freshly slaughtered. This Gift tells a Moth when a fresh corpse is nearby, and inexorably leads the weremoth to the site where the body rests. Once Carrion's Call has been issued, the Pathos moth has no choice but to eventually, somehow, respond. Carrion's Call is taught by a Vulture spirit.System: A Moth can hear Carrion's Call by rolling Perception + Empathy (difficulty 6) and spending a point of Gnosis. The Gift's range is up to a mile, and in case of extreme success, even further.
>>98891044Sky's Shadow (lvl 2 pathos)There's little that is more frustrating than a creeping sensation that you're being watched. This Gift allows a Moth to bestow that feeling on the target of her choice without necessitating that the Moth herself tail her victim. Sometimes the Gift creates the shadow of a large moth that follows the target everywhere; other times, it just imbues a sense of pure paranoia. At first glance, Sky's Shadow might not seem like a terribly effective Gift, but nervous men make mistakes - and this Gift can make even the strongest-willed man nervous. Any bird spirit can teach this gift.System: The Gift implants in the target the certainty that he is being watched, with the feeling lasting a day for each success on a Manipulation + Intimidation roll (difficulty 7). The Gift costs a point of Pathos to activate. While under the Gift's influence, the victim is constantly aware of the shadowy eyes of unknown figures upon him. This takes away his ability to concentrate, and he's at a +1 difficulty on all Willpower and Mental related rolls as long as the Gift's effect lasts. Dead Talk (lvl 3 pathos)There are secrets you just can't get from a dead man's eyeball. There are times when you need more than just a stiff's last sight. At those difficult times, being able to hold a conversation with, or at least get a few straight answers out of, the spirit of the deceased increases the Moth's information-gathering possibilities exponentially. A Vulture spirit teaches this Gift, some wraiths are also able to teach it as well.System: The Moth, by spending a Gnosis point and rolling Perception + Occult (difficulty 8), can hear and speak to a recently dead body (no more than (24 hours dead). The corpse's willingness to talk is determined by the number of successes, but no matter how many successes the Moth achieves, all he'll get is the body's mechanistic response to his question. Odds are, the corpse's ghost is long gone.
>>98891051Airt Sense (lvl 4) (universal suggested)This is the same as the spirit Charm, and can be taught by any type of spirit possessing that particular Charm.System: Moths using Airt Sense must spend one Gnosis point and roll Perception + Occult (difficulty 7) to utilize it. The understanding of ways of the Umbra granted by this Gift halves travel time through the spirit world. Gauntlet Runner (lvl 4) (universal suggested)With all the Moths spend popping in and out of the Umbra, it's no surprise that they've aquired a trick for lowering the Gaunlet and making the trip back and forth immeasurably easier. Any Wyld spirit can teach this gift.System: a roll of Wits + Enigmas (difficulty 8) reduces the Gauntlet by 1 for every two successes. The area affected can be up to 20 feet on a side, but no matter how successful the Moth is on her roll, she must still use a reflective surface to enter the Umbra. Dark Truths (lvl 3) (universal suggested)This Gift allows the Moth to uncover a secret truth or character flaw of an observed subject. A Fly spirit teaches this Gift.System: To utilize Dark Truths, the Moth spends a Gnosis point and rolls Perception + Enigmas (difficulty 7). With a success, the Moth acquires knowledge of one of his target's deep dark secrets. While this Gift doesn't turn loose the sort of secrets that are useful in combat, it does pry loose all sorts of interesting blackmail material.
