How do you make Werewolves cool again? Where Vampires have completely recovered from the damage done by Twilight and other "sexy vampires" media, werewolves seem to have been irreversibly tied to furry's and general post-ironic internet cringe. How do (You) save werewolves anon? How do you make them cool again?

tl;dr I'm making a Vampires vs. Werewolves setting and want to brainstorm.
>>
>>98899501
The problem is that Vampires have two very strong cornerstones (immortality and needing to manage predatory urges) whereas Werewolves only have involuntary transformation and whatever else you can tack on.
So it turning bad became really easy.
The way I'd do it is taking inspiration from the various medieval peasant revolts including the Müntzerites, American independence & abolitionist movements and Anastasianism.
Then steal only the good parts of WtA.
Basically fiercely independent Midwest homesteader weirdos vs coastal old money weebs.

Just admit you're a furry and then start jerking it to cat girls like a normal degenerate. They're at least cute.

Werewolves are pack animals, they're hunters, they have enhanced senses that could be worked similar to Daredevil and Wolverine... put them in boardrooms and watch them be the next Patrick Bateman. Even add the inner voice conversations as they talk to the Beast Within, similar to the conversations Eddie Brock and Venom had in the movies.

The whole psychological aspect of the beast inside wanting to break free if caged in human form for too long... the group interactions with their pack and how they come from different walks of life and need to work together, sort of their "work family" as they do what werewolves do whwn they're not giving into thr wolves. I figure working to reclaim animal hunting grounds and sanctuaries and such?

So, for movies, it could be cool transformations and fighting scenes, or it could become even more social as they try not to go psychotic as they balance their beastly insides.

Everything about your repressed furry desires is cringe. And nothing in your comments has validity outside your fetish delusions.
Plus... do your own work for the game setting you'll never play.

Make their transformation during full moon inevitable unless they do something. Like vampires need to consume blood, maybe werewolves need to eat human flesh, or something of the sort.

You could either make it so they are pack animals like wolves or the complete opposite, make them have territories and work to protect it, have them fighting each other for land and stuff like that.

Immortality could be interesting as it would allow them to rival vampires a bit better, but I feel like it works better as a conditional here, for example they would only be immortal while transformed. This would be interesting combined with the solo werewolf idea, since the only time you would be able to trully kill them would be when they are human. With this you could develop some kind of vampire stealth killing group or something.

If you choose the solo werewolves idea too, it's very probable that vampires would make agreement with some while antagonizing stronger ones. If you pick the pack werewolf option, I feel like that would make less sense.

Pic related movie series had some interesting ideas, including the vampire-werewolf hybrid. It did look pretty stupid though.

Also, consider having other werethings out there, even if they are not as dominant as the main two. Werebears could be an interesting addition

Guy became wwolf. Now even if he isn’t fully transformed he’s fucking looney from the out of body experience of mauling people and eating them. Basically just a weaker version of a wolf when he isn’t transformed.
>bad transformation
I actually KIND of like what the HP movies did with werewolves in PoA: it looks unbelievably painful and unnatural and in no way would you want this. I’d go even further and have the yes bulging/bleeding under immense pressure and blood coming from teeth/nails/orifices as the body struggles to accommodate rapid changes to its structure.
>surprise
Make no mention of silver bullets or powers or even what it is. It’s just SOMETHING and you gotta figure it out from scant clues. As for killing it, make it insanely hard to kill but if possible never let it die “onstage” when badly wounded. Make them wonder if it’s really dead.

Well, first of all, if you want rid of the furries and most of the monster rape enthusiasts, simply make them ugly as fuck. Harry Potter of all things did this well. You'll still keep some monster fuckers, but some are basically non-negotiable.

Then you need to decide the nature of the werewolf. The classic/original is not a curse but a magical power of a type of witch in almost all cultures with a werewolf analogue. Sometimes these things were 'open secrets' or under public suspicion, but feared for their powers and thus avoided. They usually got their powers from disgusting rituals performed in service to evil spirits, so this type of werewolf is going to be feared more for that.

The curse based modern werewolf van be handled multiple ways. Bloodborne did the werewolf/vampire war thing, with both sides getting their power more or less from the same profane source, and being cursed for their wickedness in similar ways.

I always thought the occult element of Werewolves were under explored. I really liked how An American Werewolf in London created the lore that a werewolves victims stick around as ghosts until the werewolf is dude. Or how The Cycle had the werewolf transform even if the host is dead, reverting back to a corpse after a transformation. Don't be afraid to come up with some weird idea and just say this is how werewolves work in your game.

This is how I do it. Werewolves are nearly immortal. Only silver can harm them and only inherited silver can permanently kill them. A werewolf will never seek to end it's own life no matter how much they hate what they are.
A person cursed to be a werewolf turns every night except moonless nights. Their transformation becomes easier, less painful, quicker, the blurred memory of the nightly hunt is more serene, beautiful and dreamlike as the moon waxes. The untransformed werewolf will feel refreshed, more alive and alert during this time. The during a full moon they are at the peak of this feeling and the can force the transformation at anytime they wish even during the day and they will have some controll over their transformed self. The werewolf will also be pretty much immune to death and pain during the full moon. Silver can still damage them but it wont kill or hurt them really.
When the moon wanes the transformation gets increasingly more painful, more traumatic, takes longer, the blurred memory of the hunt is nightmarish and horrific. The untransformed werewolf will feel worse and worse as the moonless night comes closer. During this period is where most werewolves lament what they are, their body wracked with unbearable pain, forced to watch themselves maim, murder, and gorge on human flesh. During moonless nights a werewolf doesn't transform but is instead locked in an agonizing nightmare, with their body writhing in pain. They are most vulnerable to silver at this time.
Most Werewolves end up as crazy hermits or loner recluses because of this cycle. Eventually every one of them begins to pray for the return of the waxing moon so that they have some respite from the curse. Most revel in the waxing moon cycle.
>>
>>98899501
Make the transformation mythology accurate. Instead of a shifting it's basically the wolf ripping the human skin off to reveal the wolf underneath. While turning back is the human clawing its way out through the wolf to regaining their humanity again for a short while. It's agonizing, monstrous and mindbreaking for the person suffering from the curse as they either don't remember what the wolf did or had to watch helplessly through the wolf's eyes.

They have?

Anyway werewolves never really became cool as protagonists/villains for games, because as they stand they have next to nothing to play. Hell, they're difficult to do as horror movies go, because doing the protag AS the villain is pretty difficult for simpler flicks (pic related is a solution, but I digress).

So... probably go the Werewolf game way, make them guardians of both worlds. Or anyway give them something more.

Werewolves vs vampires is pretty boring shit anyway.

From your post it looks like your understanding of the genre is only skin-deep.
You should start figuring out why people found it cool in the first place, from historical, literary, mythological aspects.
Only once you dive deep enough you'll find your answer. Asking a board of opinionated autistic fa/tg/uys to brainstorm won't be of much help.

Also, as the other guys said you should figure out your target demographic since you are working with loaded assumptions.

>>
>>98901081

Those sounds like the things you usually don't want in a PC, actually. Never give a power gamer the means to go full edgelord - if anything werewolves should either be left in check of the rest of the party or be a pure vehicle for drama, not mad murderhobo skills, depending on the game.

That being said, I'm not sure what games would be "good" with werewolves anyway. Monsterhearts for sure, speaking of Ginger Snaps and whatnot. WOD actually doesn't have a bad premise for spirit doggos but I don't think it delivers as much, too action-y for the idea of mediators between two worlds.
>>
OP here. I'm gonna be honest, I forgot about the existence of ttrpg's when I made this post, I was thinking of tabletop wargaming since that's all I ever look at on this board. My bad. I think this thread has run its course because of that but if anyone wants to discuss how they'd do an army of tabletop miniatures inspired by werewolves go ahead.

It's funny that of all settings it was the wish-fulfillment Harry Potter series that made being a werewolf a completely miserable curse with no upsides. I don't think its ever mentioned that you get super-strength or anything when its not a full moon.

Any fucking game where werewolves ARE, rather than it being a game ABOUT them. The big mistake is trying to have one about them, rather than a one with them.

Go for cosmic horror.
Make werewolves a punishment from God upon humanity.

Play up the fact they're diseased creatures. Make them look less like furries and more like mangey, disease-ridden abominations.
Also, include the fact that they can only be hurt by silver. Vampires have tons of weaknesses (including just straight up decapitation), werewolves only have one, making them much harder to kill.
Another good idea is that like how vampires get more powerful as they get older, have werewolves grow larger and more beastial. An ancient werewolf should look like a Bloodborne boss fight.
>>
>>98899501
They decided to chuck out all the christian folklore and add shamanism but that was way too iconic to keep. So now you got generic evil bad guy which isn't necessarily something you can work with but bringing back the christian mythology as evil shape changers works.
>>
>>98899501
They're horrible violent monsters. They worked in VtM as lupines being a threatening powerful unknown that put limits on vampire mobility. As soon as White Wolf started explaining how werewolves worked and lived it killed it. They're the threat to the monsters. Keep them that way.

It's way cheaper to make vampires for film and art. They are just pale humans with fangs.

Werewolves on the other had require a good prop and make-up department, or expensive VFX. Plus have fun getting around censorship boards if you want your werewolf to be a woman.

The most important thing to understand about werewolves is that they are slop. They are a corporate exercise, not a mythology. Everything you take for granted as 'werewolf lore' was invented by hollywood, specifically because vampire movies were very popular and they wanted to change up the formula while appealing to the same audience. This is why vampires and werewolves are packaged together in pop culture: the modern werewolf is LITERALLY just vampires with some details changed around, including things like giving them a specific weakness to silver to mimic the vampire weaknesses.

If you go back and try and trace mythology of werewolves, you won't find anything even remotely recognizable as what you think a werewolf is supposed to be. You'll find instances of people who could turn into wolves as a general kind of animal shapeshifting, or people who were turned into wolves against their will by a curse or something, but absolutely nothing related to the full moon, human-wolf hybrid forms, or being weak to silver or anything else that makes this more than just 'a transformation has occurred and it involved a wolf'.

The term werewolf comes from a belief that there were people who could turn into wolves while retaining the intelligence of a man, but this was not a curse, not locked to the moon, etc. Its basically just druid wildshaping and thats it, and it came from people coming up with stories for why wolves could be so damn SMART and DANGEROUS sometimes. Animals are stupid, so if the wolves are using tactics they must be being lead by a person! That makes sense!
>>
>>98911897
This actually lead to a funny but brief period of werewolf lore in the middle ages, which is bonkers but would potentially make for a SICK campaign.

So, the official position of the church was that all power flowed from god, and to suggest otherwise was blasphemy. Therefore, it was impossible for witches and werewolves to exist, because getting powers from dark forces was impossible because that meant you were saying that god was not the only god and that worshiping other beings, even the devil, could produce results. And thats against the rules.
One particular monk instead tried to square the circle, and the completely baffling explanation that he came up with that made 'more sense' than a person transforming into a wolf was that there was no transformation involved. Instead, certain people chosen by god were given the ability to *astral project their consciousness* while they were sleeping and travel the forest as spirit wolves in their dreams to protect their communities from the devil and his servants in nighttime forest battles.
So according to this one specific monk's fanfiction from hundreds of years ago, "mythologically accurate" werewolves are dudes having dream battles with witches in the woods in the name of god. Like some kind of medieval animorphs fanfiction.

What if it was werebeasts, and the beast inside reflected, well, the beast inside? Like the therianthropy curse simply made peoples' true selves split from their public persona. A corporate leader turning into a snarling violent wolf, tearing and consuming and uncaring of who he hurts. A mobster turning into a ratman, violent and desperately seeking survival at all costs. A softspoken lady turning into a werehound, guarding what she finds precious.
