This is the OSR WF thread. This is a for a special group of OSR games, along with OSR-adjacent and retro games. You can talk about all OSR (Pre Wotc D&D, & retroclones) & OSR-adjacent (Mork Borg, SWN etc) games without distinction here, except for ACKS. ACKS is specifically excluded, along with all ACKS-like games and the other Autarch products. ACKS is being excluded because its fans have a tendency to be disruptive. If you want to talk about ACKS, do so elsewhere.Remember, report and ignore all trolling.Thread Question:What's your favorite under-rated magical item?
Aside from magic swords, I don't really pay much attention to magic items.I did have a lot of fun with a Medallion of ESP though. Way too overpowered and incredibly useful, having ESP at will makes every mind you encounter a potential tool.
>>98900368>Mork BorgI don't understand why this game is praised for its graphic design. IN YOUR FACE BRIGHT YELLOW PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEE is not good design.
>>98900412ESP is a very mother-may-I spell. I've had DMs that made it very unfun to use.
>>98900368>What's your favorite under-rated magical item?Murlynd's Spoon. It produces gruel every day. You can retire as an adventurer and just live off of the gruel. You could even feed a family of four with just one spoon. It's basically game over, happy end.
>>98900368favorite ACKS items is likely the "bag of caltrops", as I like to use them a lot
>>98900578based, for me its dust of alil khazim. you blow it out in a cone, and targets must save or die, and if they die, they become zombies under your command.
This might really be the worst adventure of all time. I heard it was bad, but looking through it makes me wonder how it's possible that it got published. It's really poorly written. Bad writing isn't rare for early modules, but we're talking about poor grammar, clumsy language, and odd ticks that feel unprofessional and forced. I spent more time contemplating about the story of how this got through any sort of quality control process than I did about any story the adventure was supposed to have. But, it's the linearity that's surprising. Linear adventures are also not rare, but this adventure actually tells the DM to encourage certain actions and steer the players. It's linear in a way that's almost offensive.
>>98900447No one really plays MorkBorg.Even people who like Borg play one of the hundred Borg-likes instead.
>>98900578>>98900625Please take any and all ACKS discussion elsewhere. Thank you.
>>98900368Hat of Disguise. You can use it like a free redo for any social encounter. That's a big deal if you like to act risky.>>98900636I play MÖRK BORG.You also got it 100% wrong. It's all caps, with a space, and with an umlaut.
>>98900650this is an osr thread, sorry. feel free to contact the mods via IRC. Anyways, heres another acks item I like:
>>98900632>This might really be the worst adventure of all time. That's not Tomb of Horrors.
>>98900721This is an OSR WF thread.Stop attempting to be disruptive.
>>98900636I played Mork when it first came out. I liked its energy. I'm really not surprised it exploded in popularity because it felt like OSR but minus the boomer nostalgia.>one of the hundred Borg-likes instead.I got caught up playing Pirate Borg, but I'd still be down to play Mork if the opportunity presented itself.
>>98900412>Way too overpoweredIt's a 2nd level spell at will. It's exactly about as powerful as you'd expect. For really overpowered, a Ring of Invisibility is also a 2nd level spell at will, but it's full on game-breaking.
>>98900368>What's your favorite under-rated magical item?Great question OP! I really like the Unremarkable Cloak from the ACKS Treasure Tome
>>98900578Great choice, Anon!
>>98900625Nice one, I love it!
Just ignore the ACKS spammer. This is just the thing he does.
>>98900775>For really overpowered, a Ring of Invisibility is also a 2nd level spell at will, but it's full on game-breaking.Why game-breaking? I don't see it, it's only 49,500 gp in value
>>98900632>>98900736>not castle greyhawk
>>98900775>a Ring of Invisibility is also a 2nd level spell at wilYou're wrong, Anon. It isn't a 2nd level spell, though, it's a 3rd level spell. And it is not at will either, it's once per turn. See the screenshot here >>98900875
>>98900737no idea wtf "OSR WF" is, but this is an osr thread. are you that guy who cant produce a functioning character sheet?<pic cont:> skin. If the throw succeeds, the attacker retains his weapon. >>98900650>being politeDoesn't work on trolls.>>98900736Tomb of Horrors has my absolute least favorite puzzle/trap of all time. Actually, it has several. The magical doorways that you can't do anything about except get fucked if you go through them are particularly dumb.
>>98900875its stronger in AD&D where there is no 1-turn restriction to activation. >>98900873quit cryin' lil bro, at least they are posting about games. all you do is cry and complain lmao
>>98900894Cool one! It basically turns you into an ACKS Living Iron Statue! It had never occurred to me to make magic items reproducing monster powers.
>>98900368>Thread Question:>What's your favorite under-rated magical item?I just wanted to say great question, OP. It's really easy to make posts, one can just open the book at a random page and talk about the magic item he sees there. No need to actually have ever played a game, or to have anything interesting to say. I love posts that are one-liners devoid of actual content. Good on you!
>>98900873Filters are really useful here.>>98900897It at least removed any doubt that he's doing anything but trolling.

had a lot of fun playing ACKS as a fighter that got turned into a werewolf. Eventually I got spiked barding and almost never left wolf form. (the armor was put on me by my henchman, a farmer-turned-explorer)
>>98900368pardon my retardation, what does WF stand for?
>>98900941>had a lot of fun playing ACKS as a fighter that got turned into a werewolfAre the ACKS rules for lycanthropy any good? The ones from the DMG are a bit too heavy for my taste.

>>98900947its not you thats retarded, its the brain-damaged turdie nogames OP that is retarded. >>98900950picrel>>98900952theyre fine. certainly made for a fun experience!
>>98900958Ah, cool, so they're actually SIMPLER than the DMG ones. So much for the detractors who say ACKS is too heavy. I presume your character "Gave In" to lycanthropy, then?
>>98900971or go to r/osr if gthats what you want. >>98900975yeah, I "gave in", but the DM allowed a series of saves to retain my mind and class. I had to reroll every level-up and every full-moon though. It was pretty grand, out in the wilderness, they would set me loose, and I would solo most encounters with normal creatures/men. Increased speed was also nice.
>>98900971he wont see that, he filtered "acks" <;^)

>>98900877That's the Star Wars Holiday Special of modules.

>>98901242it's engagement bait, like those videos that say replace X letter with Y but it turns the quote into gibberish. They just wanted people to bump the thread asking over and over.
>>98901256What is an ACKS-like game? It's basically BX with a shitton of houserules. I'm so confused.
>>98901256What's your favourite ACKS monster? Mine is the Necropede. It's basically the Human Centipede as a D&D monster. Brilliant.
>>98901044It's mid.There's better competition modules.
>>98901261>What is an ACKS-like game?Anything OP doesn't like.

>>98900721>False CampfireNice! Has it ever been used in your ACKS campaign?
>>98901256>ACKS is being excluded because its fans have a tendency to be disruptive. If you want to talk about ACKS, do so elsewhere.Wow no fucking kidding.
>>98900632Carl Smith ironically was an editor.
>>98901272Actually, given it's immense success, popularity, and natural evolution of gameplay design, we should completely abandon using the term osr entirely, and actually refer to these games as ACKS-likes. There's no better way to describe something, than by the gold standard
>>98901283Yes, we got it because we were sent to investigate and work army that was supposedly doing small-scale hit and run rates on local farms, and all of the locals were far too scared to go after them given the size of the camps at night. We discovered it was actually just a dozen human bandits wearing green face paint and using the false campfire to confuse people
>>98901310Approved
>>98901322Ha, brilliant! But it's only single use by the ACKS book and it has a 1,000 gp base value, did they have multiple ones? Either way it doesn't look like a great return on investment if all they were raiding was farms.
>>98900950He sounds like he has severe autism. Is someone falseflagging or is he actually always this cringey?
>>98901351There is a chance that when he sobers up he'll claim it was a falseflag to make acks look bad, but that level of self-awareness is rare and usually long delayed.>>98901286>is another OSR thread really neccesar-I'm actually kind of surprised that instead of ignoring this thread he decided to prove why its neccesary to have one where acks posters are excluded from the conversation.
>>98901021It's on top 10 lists, but it's not a top 10 module. I can think of twenty modules off the top of my head I'd rather run. It's a severe case of popularity feeding into itself.

>>98901528That's genuinely surprising.I knew MB was popular, but not THAT popular.
>>98901474The pattern and stalk thickness implies this is a Beholder and not the smaller Spectator. According to the AD&D Monster Manual, a Beholder is 4' to 6' in diameter, so it would be larger than this image shows. One could argue artistic license for a drawing of the smaller Spectator more closely resembling a Beholder, but since Spectators are 4' in diameter then this imagine would still be an irregularly small depiction.
>>98901531it's shit>t. pirate borg swede
>>98901605>pirate borg swedeThat sounds like a saturday morning cartoon show.
>>98901587It's a Gas Spore, or a Beholder Mimic. But that doesn't explain why it's so small in that picture, since Gas Spores are also 4'-6' (and would have to be, otherwise no one would mistake them for Beholders).
>>98901587>The pattern and stalk thickness implies this is a BeholderAnother fucking tourist who has never read the Monster ManualLMAO this thread is a bad joke
>>98900877>the one time designers try to have fun>it doesn't landIt's still not terrible. Just very self-indulgent. It makes a lot more sense if you've played the sixteen designers' other stuff first.

>>989017609/10 people mistake gas spore for beholders. You'd know that if you read the MM.

>>98901334sorry, thought I replied earlier. the bandits underground lair connected to an old wizard cache, and inside they found a number of utility magic items, but no weaponry.there was a spellbook/diary where the wizard described making the false campfires in order to make his party's camp look bigger when in hostile territory, and the bandits found 6 of them.
>>98901741>But that doesn't explain why it's so small in that pictureMaybe it's been deflated?
>>98901474>doesn't recognize a hill giantYou can tell by the color of his knuckles.
>>98901781Castle Greyhawk is not a good adventure. It's an unfunny slog that deliberately tries to be bad in order to be funny but it just ends up being bad and not funny. If it was a good, competant adventure that parodied old dungeons designs while being a good example of one in its own right, it could have ended up as a classic. But, it's just a solid disappointment and pretty tone-deaf at times.
>>98902524That makes more sense from the MU's magic point, but as bandits I still think they'd have been better off selling them, although it's easy to come up with explanations in this case: perhaps the bandits are wanted so that's not an option for them. In general I think that the prices of single-charge magic items in ACKS are sometimes a bit too high.
>>98901392Name 10.
>>98900754You think the whole effort to de-boomerfy boomer games is what's gotten the boomers so enraged?
>>98902872they were categorically "bandits", outlawed in towns as you assumed. > the prices of single-charge magic items in ACKS are sometimes a bit too highsomewhat agree. >>98903093>anti-chud "mining the chans" campaign
>>98903093Huh.Huh huh huh huh huh.The more I think about it, the more this angry boomer mad at kids business fits. Not just the whole complete lack of understanding how the internet works because that's a given, but that weird gygax worship that demands total fealty really meshes in there pretty tightly. The idea that we have to accept all the past (that they like) and can't just take the parts we like instead is pure angry boomer.I'm kinda tempted to make an afro tech remix using samples of some dad rock to see if I can make a song that makes boomers explode.
>>98903093You might be looking too much into trying to find rational reasons.

>>98900412>Aside from magic swords, I don't really pay much attention to magic items.I feel like some of my players have been ruined by playing 3e and 5e and WoW and other video games, because their expectations of magical items has been warped where they never seem satisfied no matter how good a haul might be.It might be some of that gacha game and tiktok influence that's frizzled their dopamine receptors.
>>98900447It beats soulless.Too many games have no personality at all.
>>98904152ACKS Bandits are cool, but Brigands are even better!
>>98903897Excellent ACKS infographic, Anon. Whom did you make it for? Your players? Yourself?
>>98904252House rules for how magic works in an ongoing campaign. It's been adjusted/tweaked since last time I posted it, but the thrust remains the same.Magic users having no per-day spells and instead having to maintain spells/work towards rituals has created a far more low fantasy, Conan-esq setting.Vancian magic really is a weakness even in old OSR style games, it turns magic into 'Once per day I solve issues' rather than mages being actual mystics/occultists.Change the mage and you change the entire setting.
>>98904259Cool! Did you make a write-up? Are there any other changes besides the ones in the infographic?
>trying to use acks posts to make people leave threadsExperience has at least taught him that.

>>98904411To exclude games you'd need to be able to talk about games first, which you clearly aren't.What do you think of the ACKS Spell Tyrant, fishfag? Is it better or worse than the AD&D Beholder? In what respects?

>>98904899Doubly wrong.(1) I explicitly said "OSR", and the Diterlizzi art for "AD&D" 2e is not OSR.(2) More importantly, it's not a Vargouille.Which proves you know absolutely nothing about OSR-era D&D.
>>98904899love the banshee. never used one in-game but Ive fought one. I have an adventure I regularly run for newbies that includes a friendly ghost, I might just replace him with am aggressive banshee, since PCs usually treat the ghost boy like a chump. (until he age drains you)I like the MO's version. The special "ghost abilities" look like a fun addition.

>>98909422Dracula had psychic connections with his servants/victims, and he gave an old lady a heart attack, but nothing really close to "energy drain via claw attack".
>>98908131That'd make garlic worth significantly more than its weight in gold, since 5gp in gold coins would be half a pound and even the heaviest garlic heads don't weight more than a quarter pound.Gold would thus be far less useful to carry around than garlic. Not only would garlic protect you from Vampires, it'd also be far lighter to transport. While it doesn't last as long as gold does (ie. forever), it would last several months (far longer than you'd have to worry about keeping track of it), and towards the end of that you could just plant the bulbs and grow even more garlic. It's just nothing but upsides over carrying gold coins.

>>98910842> The manuscript for the 1st castle includes: 22 levels, each with a hand drawn map and handwritten keys, except where noted. In total there are 42 pieces of paper, including 22 sheets of graph paper with maps and 20 pieces of lined notebook paper for keys and notes (many with writing on front and back for a total of 31 pp of writing). All pieces are original. Missing are: 2 keys for the dungeon, both the map and key for the Upper Works, and the map for the Outdoors area around the castle.>> The manuscript for the 2nd castle includes: 32 levels (29 complete, 2 map only, and 1 key only), each with hand drawn maps and handwritten keys, except where noted. In total there are 101 pieces of paper, including 31 graph paper maps (3 of these being 17 x 22 and 1 being 11 x 68 inches), 60 pieces of lined notebook or other types of paper for keys and notes (many with writing on front and back for a total of 52 pp of writing), and 10 pieces of visual aid art illustrated by Gary. All pieces are original. The map and keys for the Upper Works and the map for the Outdoors area around the castle are present and counted among the complete levels. Not counted among these but included in the auction is an additional regional map of the country around the castle, created by Gary in 1979.
>>98910848> Because Gary imported several levels into the 2nd castle, there are 14 overlapping levels between the 1st castle and it. In total there are 14 shared maps and 2 shared keys. Which is the reason these two manuscripts are being sold together. This brings the total number of levels for the 2nd castle to 46.>> Not included in this auction are the following 23 levels of the 2nd castle: 18 levels from the 2nd castle that are not wholly Gary's creation or the work of others and 5 levels (or parts thereof) that have been previously sold at auction by the Robert J. Kuntz Estate.
>>98910801>that little carrion crawlerOh shit that little bastard is cute.
>>98910848I didn't know there were two Castle Greyhawks. The 1st castle was created in 1973, and the 2nd castle was created in 1974-1976, in part by Rob Kuntz. The 1st castle was part of the playtesting for OD&D. Some might consider the 2nd castle to be part of the playtesting for AD&D, but I doubt there was anything close to a complete AD&D ruleset before the core combat tables appeared in the Feb 1979 Dragon. The 2nd castle may have informed the making of AD&D but it is hard to see how it could have been a proper playtest.
