I was kind of expecting something a bit more than abominations. Like if this came out last year maybe I'd have been interested?
Gothic feels like a pathetic cash grab and I care absolutely zero about it.

You know what, I changed my mind. There's going to be a bunch of rolls to do later for potential stat upgrades and new mechs, but these 2 rolls can be done sooner rather than later.>Rebecca Buck>Ishtar MarikPlease roll 2d6 in response to this post, with your pilot name in the name field to identify it as you. That is the only way I will accept a result. Then we can see what happens and proceed from there.
>>98901634>you and your squad of elemental mommies have to kill a 60ft tall dezgra nuclear fire breathing abomination beneath the city

>>98901663Has Morgan been sent to the hospital for SRM explosion burns? Want to get an idea of how things are before I write up another letter.
>>98901704Well guess she only has mild concussion this time. Do I get to roll for what kind of injury she is left with?
>>98901718You can create the lore you want for her about it. Nice to see she's sticking around, but man does she need to get that piloting skill up and it doesn't look like it's likely to happen next time now. I've included her record sheet here. It was Rebecca's fall that set the pace of the game.>>98901717Morgan's totally fine. You can see his record sheet here.

>>98901964I said if he got badly fucked up without dying, so that was something that would have happened only on getting a 4 or 5. Maybe mad at the Refs on a 6 or 7, but with the 9 that was actually rolled? Yeah, he's walking it off.

>>98902083'Fair enough. Who got the final shot(s) in to down him? And did the Charger survive or did Ishtar end up doing a Year 1 McCormick?
>>98902122Ishtar didn't have time to fool around. When he finally got to charge in, he met a rather abrupt end. Shiloh Verkler in her Wolverine smashed the Charger's head in with a tree.>>98902096>Marik's head is too thick to be hurt by fallingOh. That is some choice wording you used there. You know what, screw it. I'm still going to eventually create a proper batrep, including pictures and everything with a turn by turn breakdown to post here, but for now, I might as well just share the turn 18 record sheets. The game ended at the start of turn 19 when Ayumu finally failed her forced withdraw check. If she had somehow managed to just keep passing those, I think she could have solo'd the remaining 3 enemies. Especially if she hadn't whiffed swinging a girder into the right leg of Shiloh's Wolverine the turn before.
>>98901964Marik's callsign is now Crybaby. Saying it now especially from someone who had their head blown off and walked it off.

Oh I fucked up my paint job. I fucked it up. I don't know how but I fucked it up, trying to go for a metallic color scheme and I don't know what the hell I did wrong but it looks like shit.
>>98902158That would have been dangerous. She has an exposed side torso with ammo and is one leg kick away from going down for good.
>>98902211Try giving it a brighter drybrush.
>>98902216Not entirely true. She took a crit to the CT several turns earlier and it destroyed her SRM4. So when the opportunity arose, she dumped both her SRM & LRM ammo. At that point, she was completely risk free of ammo explosions.
>>98902211Its not terrible just a bit monotone. Needs a little highlighting, or a bright dry brush like >>98902230 said.
>>98902230I didn't. I did not drybrush. I airbrushed VMC magnesium onto a black primer, then added thinned AK tenebrous grey to where I thought the shadows would be. Then I put VMC pale burnt metal to highlight where I thought the light would shine, then tried a basic edge highlight with that color. I also tried to stiple/sort of stab/drybrush-ish a mix of magnesium and tenebrous grey on the edges of the shadow areas and a mix of magnesium and pale burnt metal on the edges of the highlighted areas. I have no idea how I fucked up, I just looked at it afterwards and I don't like it. Maybe I'm being paranoid, do I need to strip the model?
>>98902239I don't even know where I would drybrush, or even if I should drybrush with VMC. I did not drybrush, see >>98902246
>>98902246I'm not saying you did drybrush, I'm saying you should try drybfushing it with a bright color. Pick whichever of those is the lightest.
>>98902258I don't think I'm supposed to drybrush VMC, I don't even know where the hell I should even drybrush it. I just wanted to recreate older artwork that depicted metallic battlemechs.
>>98902250You can drybrush with any acrylic, you just have to make sure to wipe most of it off on a paper towel or something so that you don't just... wet brush it by mistake.
>>98902264Drybrushing at this stage isn't a matter of where. You just swipe it back and forth across the whole thing to catch all the edges and then clean it up later.
>>98902272I mean, I can try that when I get home. Not sure if it'll look better or worse.
>>98901492I don't mind AU boxes but the Gothic box should've just been abomination minis while encouraging players to kitbash gothic mechs to their individual tastes. Ahhhhh! I forgot to take pictures of turn 12! I blundered.

>>98902136Ouch. He's probably going to get reamed for going down that fast after asking for the Charger as much as he did.If he stays in the Charger and it's allowed, he'd probably be looking to swap out the Left Arm and Left Torso Small Laser for a Medium Laser in the Left Arm, and the same situation mirored of swapping out the RT and RA smalls for a Medium in the Right Arm.He would 100% be remembering how effective he was with one Medium in the Locust while also recalling how hard it was to get anything to hit in range with just the Smalls. It's a pretty common refit I end up doing whenever I have a Charger in Campaigns for one reason or another, but I dunno if you'd allow it. It's not an official variant despite feeling like it should be one that should.>>98902158>The game ended at the start of turn 19 when Ayumu finally failed her forced withdraw check.I bet she was trying to force herself to stay in as long as possible to make up for two people on her side going down on Turn 6.
>>98902446>I bet she was trying to force herself to stay in as long as possible to make up for two people on her side going down on Turn 6.I was hoping so hard that she'd be able to make a comeback win, and not just because I was on her team. It would have made for such a great story. Honestly though, Wang Lee ended up being quite the survivor. He didn't go down until turn 18, and was just in a Spider.>He's probably going to get reamedI'm sure there's going to be plenty of ribbing to go around for everyone and some lessons for them all to learn too.>If he stays in the Charger and it's allowed, he'd probably be looking to swap out the Left Arm and Left Torso Small Laser for a Medium Laser in the Left Arm, and the same situation mirored of swapping out the RT and RA smalls for a Medium in the Right Arm.Terrible idea. You'd want the lasers to all be in the torsos, so that he can still throw 2 punches while firing them.>but I dunno if you'd allow it.Well, lorewise, only the head of the mech was damaged. I don't think the mechtechs would really want to work on it further beyond that. I'll need some time to think it over. Would you be willing to forfeit your potential mech upgrade rolls for the refit? It is up to the rest of your force to make use of the time you buy them.>>989025738 jump is tough and there are not really any light hunters on our team. >>98902573Angling for a Warrior House liaison appointment?
>>98902812It is good know that some of you anons are gentlemen of culture.
>>98903165WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!
>>98902540>Terrible idea. You'd want the lasers to all be in the torsos, so that he can still throw 2 punches while firing them.Ah, I see the misunderstanding. Thing is, you don't want to stay in a straight up punching fight after your charge because a lot of guys in similar tonnage are going to have more torso weapons than you can ever mount. The plan is instead to use the Mediums as you close in for a Charge, Charge attack a frontline guy to bulldoze through and weaken them for the other guys, and then instead of sticking around you rush into the enemy's backline where the range of motion of the arms allows you to shoot at the back armor of frontliners as you keep running to start fighting their Snipers and LRM boats that are way less prepared for a melee brawl. And with them, kicks + the mediums will do good enough for severely fucking up their ability to do their job. Or if you want to keep focus on the frontline guys, do another Charge into their backs this time. The overarching goal is to be a big Catch-22 of disruption and distraction. If they deal with the Charger, that takes heat off the main force and potentially gives them openings to shoot them in the back. If they don't, the Charger becomes a worse problem.>Would you be willing to forfeit your potential mech upgrade rolls for the refit?I'd be down for that.

I know it's probably an exercise in futility to assign proper calibers to the various ballistic weapons, but I've heard different people cite 20mm as the figure for both AC/2s and standard MGs. I want to say it seems a bit big for machine guns, but then, the ones on mechs do weigh 1000 pounds...
>>98901447Upload the PDF and maybe I'll care.
>>98903519Mech scale MGs fall everywhere between 50cal and 30mm, with 20mm being the most common value. AC/2s are almost always 40mm or larger; I can't think of one that's actually 20mm anywhere. Regardless, the 1000-lb weight for an MG also includes all of the servo assists, remote unjamming equipment, and the gun mount itself. An M2s remote mount on top of an M1 Abrams weighs about 750lbs, so the more flexible mounting on a Mech weighting a touch more is still pretty reasonable. The Rheinmetall S-20 remote 20mm gun mount is a bit more than 950lbs, so that's still within reason.
>>98903546>>98903519Consider that the material science of BT is meant to be so far beyond that of modern day, that comparing the two is asinine.
>>98903546Also the actual ammo feed. Ammo bins are abstract (an empty bin weighs nothing), but the feed is part of the weapon since iOS missile launchers specifically remove the superfluous feed and shave weight as a result.

>>98904602You were a terrible menace and I rooted against you every step of the way, especially when you, Igzael, and McCormick all alpha striked me at the same time. I still partially regret when I decided to do a test roll for Eleanor upgrading her mech and rolled that Highlander. It certainly becomes the focal point of the battle. All that said, I think I was fair in when I declared her finally eliminated. She could have stuck around to draw fire until the mech was actually destroyed, but so could some others. I think the battle results give me some things to work with for her story wise. She had a great showing and was on the winning side, but she also learned that she's not invincible. That will likely keep her from getting too full of herself. I do wonder how she'll react to McCormick pointing out that he outlasted her in a mech with 1/3 the tonnage. The Locust too. The light mech pilots will certainly get to do some gloating, though I imagine they'll all still want Eleanor on their team.
>>98904775Don't worry, I'm completely entertained by stuff blowing up. Funnily enough, I've never had my to Highlander perform well on the tabletop. Must be destiny.
>>98904775I don't see why that would be surprising. If you are the enemy force you absolutely have to kill the Highlander but can ignore a Valkyrie for some time. But now that I think about it lighting up the Javelin is totally a William call. Is Clan Wolf Beta Galaxy TOO popular as a color scheme?
>>98906440I think it's clearly the best wolf color scheme. Other clans have much more reasonable spreads of acceptable color schemes.
>>98906440It's the only fucking reason to paint Clan Wolf, because it's probably one of, if not the best clan color scheme. So of course it's incredibly popular. I don't fault anyone for painting it.
>>98904342If they were brought back as a standalone thing rather than only existing as one of the LAM modes, I'd be down for it. Could probably get some decent, reasonably balanced rules for them as a solo act.
>>98906583GliderMechs would be a cool concept. I'd like to see more 'Mech suptypes in general desu.
>>98906583That could be cool. Id also be open to LAMs that could only transform into mech and airmech modes, with no jet mode. But also ya, i still wouldn't mind a dedicated airmech with some decent rules. Off the top of my head I can't imagine they'd be to different from VTOLs or heavily minmaxxed jump mechs, which I wouldn't mind if they were some kind of cancerous combo of both desu since I favor cancerous jump mechs a lot
Continuing the discussion about customizing mechs, is it possible to customize Variant B of a certain mech into its primary model as Variant B would be a downgrade? See upgrading a Marauder-3L to MAD-3R and a Highlander-733 to an HGN-732?
>>98906769For some mechs, the more advanced variant coming back into use (or in some cases, the mech itself coming back at all) is because they refit them back to what they used to be.

If you can't, Legendary Mechwarriors III has a good variety to build a starting lance from. Whatever you've had fun with in the games otherwise. If you want to take some time trying chassis before committing to minis, grab and print out the Papertech set from wherever in the OP it ended up.
>>98909689Get stuff that looks cool and are also old SLDF machines that survive the Succession Wars like Thunderbolts, Marauders, Warhammers, Archers, etc. They're in service for half a millennium or more; every faction has them, and they have new variants into the most modern eras.
>>98909689It's rapidly becoming harder to find, but the mechs in the A Game of Armored Combat box are evergreen. But there's more than 600 mechs, so there's a lot of ways to approach picking them.

>>98909957It benefits me. I like making other people miserable, and LAMfags deserve it.
>>98909981Why would the skeleton tear itself apart transforming if it had been designed with transformation in mind?
>>98910017Where's all that excess myomer go to allow for structural transformation? Hammerspace? It doesn't stretch beyond its parameters, nor does it contract into a void when not in use.
>>98910034Into compartments designed for that extra mass, as part of the extra weight and crit space spent on the transformation mechanism and aero components?
>>98909689All these grogs give fine advice, but I'd also recommend some of the newer mechs to spice things up and learn about some of the newer tech, like the Hammerhead and Eris for example. Both are fine examples of mechs with unique "gimmicks" that are fun and easy to understand and let them be fun on the tabletop and stand out
>>98908771>How about an Ion Sparrow? How about go fuck yourself, how does that sound?I mean, go fuck yourself IS the right response to anyone who plays an Ion Sparrow.
>>98909884I've always wondered what a "full wing" would do. Im very in favor of them bringing back LAMs at least in the form of maybe dedicated Airmechs with some reasonable rules. The idea of a mech hovering around the battlefield mid air sounds very cool and very fun, it should be a feature. In general though I think they should add some more movement options for mechs other than just jump jets, like maybe hover jets and tracked feet for example, both can have their advantages and disadvantages
>>98910049Show me these compartments. Are they occupying crit slots? How are you warping the non-myomer skeleton? Extra gimbals and joints? How is the armor shifting to accommodate shit not being where it was when it was bolted on? LAM transformation is ridiculous by any logic of structural engineering, and since we aren't playing with magictech it has no place in a grounded engineering tech tree like BT functions under.
>>98910084I feel like you're massively overcomplicating a process as relatively simple as "point thrust in one direction, unfold lift and control surfaces, go." Especially when you consider BattleMechs are, in fact, robots which can be built to accommodate pointing their thrust in one direction and unfolding lift and control surfaces, a process presumably not much more complicated than giving one four legs considering both variants predate Lostech and its benefits.
>>98910066A fullwing would be more or less a flight pack. Something that every non LAM could equip. However, it wouldnt be as good as a real LAM. Constant heat generation per turn, slower in the air, maybe an aim penalty. However, it does add back armor and is ditched when it's own armor reaches zero or whatever.
Can Battletech ever be unfucked, /tg/?Herb is a shitter but he's right that LAMs don't really vibe. Coleman and Stackpole fucked the worldbuilding, Wizkids era should never have happened and CGL is allergic to good decisions. It's taken the PiG a decade to unshit the vidya, and it will still never be tabletop/lore accurate. What do, western mecha fan, what do?
>>98910103I feel like you're underestimating the complexity of designing such an over-engineered foible. Fundamentally changing the interior of a thing changes everything on or around that thing. Everything would have to move, everything would have to align in perfect order, with perfect timing, without flaw, every time, or else cripple the overengineered foible, which defeats the point entire. Look at the teething problems the Osprey had to overcome just to flip its props and maintain flight, as an example of the obstacles such an engineering feat would have to contend with.
>>98910122Enjoy the parts of the setting you like and not winge about some theoretical utopic vision not being real, because said scenarios literally never exist.
>>98910139Do you mean that thing that was done centuries ago in-universe and with much simpler technology? Or do you mean how the LAM versions of Mechs are canonically separate chassis made with those accommodations in mind?
>>98910122If you want to unfuck the series, they need to either reboot the entire thing, or have a fuck huge time skip and make everything before it be considered classic, OBSOLETE, and useless in the current era. Current Battletech suffers from there being no real tech advancement and battlemechs having no real uniqueness to them. Any X tonnage mech can do the same thing as any mech of the same tonnage. So, mechs are just skins.
>>98910149Those chassis would never be worth the trouble to develop in the first place.
>>98910164They were though, otherwise they wouldn't exist and be a major part of 3025's early stories.

>>98910210>minimal wing shifting is equivalent to complete structural realignmentYes.>but it's more complexYes.Same thing but harder.
>>98910215Thus, overengineered, a mini-Baron, and that thing didn't shapeshift.
>>98910213That's not them existing in Battletech the setting, it's them being used as the basis for the art of Battletech the game. You can tell because the Shadow Hawk is a shitbox and Dougram is the best Combat Armor of its setting.
>>98910233Except they ported over the functionality of what they cribbed into a setting that's provided tech advancement tree doesn't allow for it, creating a paradox in development.
>>98910228You do not know what "overengineered" means.Something is overengineered if it is more complex than it needs to be to achieve its design purpose.LAMs are exactly as complex as they need to be to be mechs with the mobility of ASFs, you cannot achieve ASF mobility with a mech without making it a LAM.
>>98909052>So that's a -1 to both punch & kick instead of a 0 & -2 respectively. So kicking is not automatically assumed in the games I'm doing. You still want the MLs in the arms?Yeah. I wasn't even really considering the -2 that much since I expected you might be using the updated. A single kick does still deal 16 damage like 2 punches, and while the latter can still hit with one if the other rolls bad or hit a wider variety of locations, I tend to like the concentrated 16 to a generally expected location (legs). Especially since the attacks would be intended on Snipers/Fire Support mechs which may not be able to handle such a concentrated hit there too well.Similarly, the arc of fire you can get with lower arms + torso twist has so much value for finding rear armor shots once you get into that backline position to put on the pressure that makes you a problem the enemy needs to address.
>>98910249It doesn't create a paradox, though. The Battletech technological progression is as much a work of fiction as the rest of the work and it says LAMs were invented just fine. It's no more a paradox than any given piece of Clan equipment.
>>98909884LAMs are peak and only secondary faggots hate em.

As it stands, nothing in-universe utilizes LAM-style or -level tech, which means it does not belong. Aberrant tech does not belong.
>>98910316Well as seen by the extra tonnage and crit space used by the aeronautics, as well as the tonnage and internal restrictions nobody likes, there are sacrifices and compromises to be made when designing a LAM that may not necessarily be viable for your design to make. At the same time, the existence of LAMs and them not being shunted off to "in-universe work of fiction" like The Animated Series is proof that a Mech that can move like an ASF has its place to the people within the setting.
>>98910313Even in optimal terrain one of the dashers that can move 25 hexes is still less mobile than a stinger LAM, LAMs further gain even more mobility advantage if there is any rough terrain between their initial position and the target destination.>>98910316>Chicken or egg is not a basis for argument.Someone that said "internal combustion engines do not function due to the physical laws of our universe" would be disproven if someone presented a functioning internal combustion engine. And some people in-universe wanted a mech with the mobility of an ASF, which necessitates designing and using LAMs.
Gentlemen. I've not posted in the LAM argument, but there are two pieces of information that are useful here.First, ASF's are built on mechtech. They use myomer to move their flaps and the miniaturized fusion engine was first used in the Mackie. Barring the retcons CGL has made. They also use neurohelmets. They share a ton of baseline tech that other units don't. They even take a beating like mechs in space. Play a game of Aerotech sometime. It will become ingrained. LAM's do make sense in universe.ASF's also being the most strategically-critical and rare standard combat unit (1/5 as common as mechs), are also the reason why LAM's were generally a failure. ASF's are needed more than a flying mech, and that's how the majority of LAM's died in use (being used as an ASF force) before they become rare enough to be hoarded for their special talents.
>>98901447Which books do I read to get the low-down on phelan from his time with the kell-hounds up to the events of the the ARDC being formed, the stackpole blood of kerensky trilogy? Also is it true that ranna got with phelan while fucking literally everyone around her, including vlad, and told him so to his face? Trying to reconcile a nietszchean warrior society with hippie-commune levels of fucking and the fact Phelan allowed it up until the exiled wolves left.
>>98910316>If that was its function, every 'mech would be a LAMIt should be noted that, outside of the Light tonnage range, LAMs were still considered highly experimental and really, really advanced. Their factories were highly prized even back in the first Succession War, and afterwards were pretty much irreplaceable by the Great Houses. If the Star League hadn't fell and LAM RnD kept being advanced, it wouldn't be a stretch to say conventional eventually just wouldn't have been able to compete. So the easy, and canonically backed, answer to why LAMs aren't everywhere is because the SLDF fell. Too expensive for the Great Houses to pick up, too flexible to fit Clan autism, and WoB made a fair go of it but in the middle of an intergalactic, apocalyptic war that wouldn't have lent them time to research the tech, just resurrect what already exists.

>>98910373>ASF's are needed more than a flying mech, and that's how the majority of LAM's died in use (being used as an ASF force) before they become rare enough to be hoarded for their special talents.Part of why I think dedicated AirMechs would be a better option than reintroducing LAMs at this time, as too much is needed to maje them good ASF just yet. Also because on the gameplay side, an Airmech would give the air support feeling without needing as many map sheets as true ASF need.
>>98910398>that wouldn't have lent them time to research the techThey figured out how to design "IJJ's" on them which is a huge leap forward for them in design. Plus, they made the first new chassis in centuries.

>>98910642>Yet you think starting from scratch would be any better?!NTA but both no and yes. Yes I think it is possible for competent people to create a better, more coherent version of the setting. >>98909743Yeah and I'm definitely putting a hard stop on customization jobs that would involve upgrades to FF and double heat sinks. >>98910667What about turning my rear facing lasers forward? How often does a 5/8/5 really have to worry about getting flanked, anyway? Such caution doesn't seem fitting for a would be samurai.
>>98910579this reeks of "-ism think"also>no quadvee copeI see your favoritism and raise you, you're playing the game wrong. The kitchen sink of rules is there for narrative play. >>98910706You see the 2 internal torso shots on the Locust? Those came from Medium Lasers from your rear facing MLs. Aside from that, I've often wondered how the swapping of weapons from rear to forward facing would go in-universe lore. Seems like the kind of thing that would require a big rework.Could other anons weigh in on this particular bit of lore?
>>98910642Not with CGL at the helm. The only hope for BT is they implode and the license goes to someone who actually gives half a shit about the setting.
>>98910740Things like the Centurion or Dragon with a single rear ML are known to have refits that move it forward. The only big weapon machine known to have that commonly is the Quickdraw, to the point the original 1986 model has everything facing forward with the SRM in a wrestling belt on the waist..
>>98910740Sarna, in the Quickdraws 4H entry, describes swapping the SRM4 and two rear facing lasers as, "While a time-consuming process, it is a straightforward procedure and can be done in the field by any competent tech support facility." This suggests to me that changing weapon facing in general is just a matter of putting in the work. But I will defer to your judgment. I'd probably get cored by that Locust in the next game just to punish my hubris.
>>98910667If we roll a new mech can we select a similar variant? Like for example say I didn't want to sit on explosive ammo could I swap a Phoenix Hawk to the variant that trades the machine guns for heat sinks?

>>98910740Forward swaps are actually very easy because it leaves a "hole" in the mech which is then immediately refilled by the same weapon. All the guts behind the barrel just need to be rerouted to account for the power in or ammo feed being on the left and the coolant pipe being on the right now. It's one of the easier refits mechanically as well.
>>98910884>The rules for these are actually piss easy, I think people just dont like them because they look goofy.I actually blame rule organization for this, instead of a section that just tells you what you need to change for quads, the quad rules are all spread out as modifications made in each individual section of the book. The new core rulebook putting quads, tripods, and superheavies in their own appendices at the back that tell you everything about that unit type makes it much, much easier to actually see what changes for them on the field.

>>98912882So the clan castes all have their own councils and are supposed to govern their own. The warriors are able to override basically everyone else because they're the ones allowed to have guns, but caste selection is supposed to be decided by the scientists looking at your history and performing aptitude tests. Where they tried to integrate people into the caste system, they also tried to match their caste with their profession or areas of expertise. In many cases though, the clanners just built themselves walled compounds and told everyone outside that they weren't allowed to have weapons, money, or family anymore without actually doing any particular caste based assignments. Usually this resulted in either nothing functionally changing because clan wardens are notoriously understaffed and inept at investigation or rebellion starting to brew immediately and without any number of crackdowns able to stop it.
>>98912976The closest equivalent to landlord in the clans would be some sort of housing assignment manager, but I feel like that's a fairly high ranking position, proper resource allocation is like the third most important thing to the clans after artificial gestation and honor dueling.

>>98914344>I'm not sure how much of our Arm the Inner Sphere takes up.You know the dot that NASA uses to show Sol's location in the Orion Spur? About that size and that place.
>>98914344
>>98914352>>98914375Yeah, so it's going to depend on how "thick" the Orion Spur is...
>>98914344I think not showing the entire galaxy in maps could be an attempt to future-proof the setting, as there was some controversy in the scientific community for a while about whether the Milky Way was a standard spiral or barred spiral galaxy and maybe the writers didn't want to take sides. Seems like the scientific consensus nowadays is that it's a barred spiral, but I guess we can't really be sure until somebody is able to photograph it from outside. It's the same reason Apha Centauri never shows up in Mass Effect. With all the new space telescopes coming out over the past few decades, the developers figured scientists would learn more about the planets there in the foreseeable future and didn't want the game to feel outdated too quickly.
>>98914410I mean it's also like >>98914007 said, it's not like adding a third axis to a game map is going to help things.I know while Star Trek Online's "Sector Map" is effectively 2d despite having some "depth" to Solar Positions.
>>98914001For what it's worth, KF drives are functionally limited by the galactic plane because they need to be within a certain distance of a star to work. Something about gravity wells and/or they need specific particles from solar radiation to recharge, not just using solar power for regular electricity.
>>98914441>Something about gravity wells and/orIt's Gravity Wells, which IS a bit of a snag since it makes every LaGrange Point is also a Pirate Point.
>>98914441>need specific particles from solar radiation to rechargeIt's pretty broad spectrum. Recharge from a station is just microwaves. IIRC, the arm is like 40 lightyears thick so doesn't throw a huge wrench into things. Better to think of the IS as a jumpmap than an actual star map.
>>98914455Why don't jump ships ever seem to use reactors? I've only heard about solar power and lithium batteries. Especially odd since warships with their own drives do have fusion powerplants, don't they?
>>98914455>IIRC, the arm is like 40 lightyears thick so doesn't throw a huge wrench into thingsThat's what I was wondering, and since I think Jump Drives started out at 20 LY leaps, it wouldn't be too horrible to compensate anyways.
>>98914471Fusion plants can charge you faster, but you risk fucking the core. There's no reason to use them at standard charge speed unless your jumpsail is damaged. Their main reason for being mounted on the ship is to power the station-keeping drives to keep from drifting.Fuel is very precious on a ship because you have to have it hauled to you by a tanker from a planet all the way to a zenith or nadir point farther away from the solar disc than Earth is from the sun.
>>98914441They can jump anywhere there is not a substantial amount of gravity. Jump points are just the most convenient spots to jump to. You can jump to proximity points closest to your destination if it's one of the outer planets, or a pirate point it gravitational phenomenon allows one to exist at the moment. You can freely jump into the inky blackness of the space between the stars if you want to. Chances are, you don't want to though, because charging off the solar sail becomes difficult when all the light sources are far away and charging off the fusion reactor might break your jump core.
>>98914478Maximum thickness of the arm is app. 1000 lightyears but we're right near the edge of the trailing secondary structure. There's a lot of barren systems outside that, just like the coreward colonization issue.

>>98914607It's one of those things that is best not asked about, because early fluff had it that charging off the reactor used prodigious amounts of hydrogen fuel (which isn't how fusion reactors work), and then later fluff changed it to the sail being a slower, gentler way to recharge that gives a smooth, safe rate. Then they came out with LF-batteries which can dump enough power to jump again seconds after your previous jump with only a small risk, or charge faster than any other method (about 72 hours) at no risk. And of course hooking up to a recharge station also carries no risk.Best not to think about it.

With the way solar sails are described as being almost perfect absorbers of the entire wavelength (to the point where detecting them as anything other than a sail shaped void is pretty much impossible), solar power should have been revolutionized by the introduction of that technology. It probably wouldn't have any real bearing on military technology since the solar collectors are fragile, but for civilian purposes, those things are basically just as good as fusion.
>>98914901Hmm, I will take a stab at that tomorrow and see how I like it.
>>98915011Buddy, at 100% efficiency, a 1 square meter panel can produce like 200 watts maximum. That's barely enough to power 3 fluorescent bulbs in the same area. Sails are magic, and also absorbing crazy cosmic rays.

Pic related also makes mention of experiments he is actively working on.Descriptions do lean a bit towards the furry side of the spectrum for the viable stuff, though might in part be due to the early nature of the experiments since he's trying to recreate Star League experiments with the Merfolk and those were stated to be extremely human looking at first.
>>98915277...Why do I feel attacked?
>>98910993>>98911054yeah, I probably should have mentioned that. The rules for vehicles are also really easy and they're actually easier than battlemechs to run in some respects.I think the biggest thing that makes players balk at combined arms and different unit types is the poor organization of rules and the scattering of rules throughout twenty different books. Is it in Total Warfare, Tacops, Intops, or Campaign ops? And tacops is two books. The naming and distribution of books really needs to be cleaned up post-core. Rule book names need to be a little more descriptive so you can actually figure out which books you need... rules for vehicles, off-board artillery, etc all in one book named "Combined Arms" or something like that. Something that's occurring to me is that BSP's really only solve a problem created by TW, that being vehicle rules only being difficult to learn because of their very poor organization. Which is a problem that can be solved. Instead of spending effort just repackaging the TW vehicle rules for Mercenaries and then actually rewriting them later they spent a bunch of effort playtesting new, shittier rules. The conclusion this is leading me to is that despite everything they're saying to the contrary, somebody at catalyst IS trying to kill the real, TW vehicle rules.
>>98915359The recreation of the tech is strongly in its early stages. The Hippo-people only have four individuals and its expressly stated that he's having one hell of a time simply making a second set of them to the point of shelving attempts until more is learned. Also, the only species he's confirmed to complain about the creation of is the catpeople because he expressly had to be convinced to make them and even then gave an extremely annoyed "I guess we're doing this then".
>>98915277That tracks with the original description of Frobisher, the fish started with mostly just functional enhancements like webbed fingers, but they're way more fucked up by the time they're described due to inbreeding and serious genetic problems that have left their immune systems utterly fucked. If the star league scientists had been able to stick around generationally, the problems could have been manually mitigated. But the only scientists who remained after the coup only had the limited resources at their labs and not enough population for them to have regular human descendants.
>>98915359It would be strange if one of the most reviled people of an entire board did not feel attacked.
>>98915362I don't really buy the idea they are trying to kill the vehicle rules, when I think there's a way simpler explanation for what's going on.Total Warfare was first published in 2006, and during the 20th anniversary, they wanted to do a big update with a new book containing new formatting as well as some balancing/QoL adjustments. They focused in on making sure the Mech rules were in the best state because they are the most popular units and it'd be weird to have a big new core book without them. The rules playtesting as well as the work on the formatting took long enough internally that they concluded that the project would easily spill over into 2027 or even 2028 if they wanted to do the same for absolutely everything. So to make sure the core book had everything, they decided to leverage BSP system for the remaining units because its simplicity and rough proximity to Alpha Strike meant that while some playtesting was needed, it wasn't as demanding as doing a full Combat Vehicle/Infantry/etc overhaul would need to be.If there was a conspiracy, I also don't think it would be a "kill off units" one. Instead, I think someone was thinking "If Games Workshop fucks up 11th edition, then having a big new release would draw people to us" and made the aforementioned 20th anniversary deadline much more rigid and even less able to be pushed back.
>>98915635>they decided to leverage BSPTHIS is the lynchpin of my argument though. They have repackaged portions of TW rules into box sets - the clan invasion box set came with the full rules for battle armor. The only time they would have had to put into packing up the vehicle rules is the drafting and technical writing effort, because the rules themselves have already been mechanically playtested for years. They can come back with a rewrite / rebalance later. Instead, they came up with an entirely new system for vehicles that they had to devote effort to writing rules for and playtesting. They had to come up with an entire new balancing system separate from BV. What other way is there to perceive this other than it is an intentional choice to sideline actual vehicle rules for some reason? The only reasonable explanation I can come up with to contradict my theory is that the BSP system itself was a result of scope creep when they were writing the campaign system for the mercenaries box set. And rather than discarding it as the failed idea it is they succumbed to sunk cost fallacy and continued to devote effort to maintaining a system that the vast majority of the playerbase does not like using. But this doesn't make sense to me, as it seemed like half the point of mercenaries was to introduce the new plastic models for vehicles. I don't know. It doesn't add up.
>>98915673>Instead, they came up with an entirely new system for vehicles that they had to devote effort to writing rules for and playtesting. They had to come up with an entire new balancing system separate from BV. What other way is there to perceive this other than it is an intentional choice to sideline actual vehicle rules for some reasonForgot to add that I'm referring to the Mercenaries box set here, they should have just repackaged the TW rules for the mercenaries box set instead of coming up with the BSP abortion.
>>98915673I think they thought that there were a lot of players who wouldn't use anything other than mechs because it's too complicated.I think what they're actually finding out is that most of those players won't use anything other than mechs because they don't want to do anything other than 4v4 mech deathmatch on two plain mapsheets, no matter how accessible anything else is.
>>98915673I've heard from a couple people that were glazing the BSP vees during the playtest and shortly after the core rules dropped that they've been getting frustrated with them especially when it comes to running actual scenarios rather than just 4v4 deathmatches.
>>98915698>because it's too complicatedI mean, you still have to learn the different movement modes, prohibited terrain and shit for assets. The biggest simplifications are the record sheet itself and removing side slipping.I would argue the vehicle record sheet is actually EASIER to learn than the asset card because it builds on things players were already taught when they learned how to play with mechs. Motive crits and regular crits are mostly explained on the record sheet, shit the hit location table is printed on the record sheet. It works just like mechs, you have a walking / running MP, you roll a 2d6 to hit, roll again for hit location, consult the hit table. You don't even have to manage heat like on a mech. Whereas for the asset card you have to learn a whole new system. The main motivation I can think of for doing this is maybe someone at CGL just really hates motive crits and thought they would be completely unfun for new players. And I will admit that I think motive crits need to be reworked a bit to give them some more granularity in stages of failure between "+1 to driving skill rolls" and "immobilized", because they do severely limit the useability of most vehicles that aren't highly specialized. But if that's the case then they really just threw the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm surprised WoB was able to source enough ER pulse lasers to create even a single celestial config based on them.
>>98915455>"MAKE THE FUCKING CATGIRLS OR I AM PUTTING TWO SHOTS INTO YOUR CHEST" the director said, calmly.
>>98915673>The only time they would have had to put into packing up the vehicle rules is the drafting and technical writing effort, because the rules themselves have already been mechanically playtested for years. The exact same argument could have been made for Mechs as well. And yet, they ended up making several changes even if the record sheets were to remain the same overall for Mechs. In fact, I could see them getting more ambitious when they do get to the Ground Vehicle rules. Half of the record sheets for the current iterations is rules reminder text. So what if they are thinking of unifying the rules a bit with Mechs by giving them a similar flexible crit table, and bringing in the heat mechanics? Thus allowing them to start using stuff like Double Heat Sinks. Maybe unify Support Vehicles and Tanks into one thing. This is absolutely ambitious, but we do already have to assign crits to a degree during construction and heat is already treated as being handled with mandatory heat sinks. I'm also fully expecting an Infantry rebuild because the current state of things was built with the A Time of War RPG in mind and they may be wanting to move on from that with the new RPG they got coming. Especially with how clunky their rules are.Ground/VTOL vehicles pretty generally have some alright rules, so them having a big record sheets update might be something that goes down.

>>98916266Someone else will need to do it as its getting a bit too late for me here. And it's only $3.But to give a generalized rundown. Battle Critters are mostly conventional animals with their rules being tuned towards the RPGs rather than Classic or Alpha Strike. They are only about Great Dane sized at the upper end for the provided examples and are generally just animals. If they go beyond that, it'd go into the Infantry space of the Anthropomorphs.Speaking of, there's an Abomination Special Abilities table that gives all the Anthropomorphs specific to species special abilities.Cybernetic enhancement is basically stated to be mandatory for the Abomination stuff. But beyond that, it's kinda hard to say anything too definitive because thy scale from human-sized and outright able to pilot mechs (this is what Anthropomorphs seem to be classed as, but only as a subtype of), and can be as tall as Light/Medium Mechs (though only weigh about 4000 kg). The one interesting bit is that the ones in Gothic are required to take the Ultraviolet Sensitivity trait, but not the main timeline ones because the processes are different and "safer" for the IlClan era ones.

The Clantech was focused around combining two to three humans' DNA together with only mild corrections for genetic deformities. If there was any research into combining with other species, that would have been deep within The Society and generally restrained to the Clan Homeworlds - likely outright destroyed in the Wars of Reaving.Additionally, these seem to be distinct from the canonical Centaurs because those look to be, or are at least now canonized as, biological/mechanical augmentation. That's not what Mareaux is doing nor what the Merfolk are. All of them are being made to be capable of both developing from embryo and passing on their traits to their kids.Similarly, to note, there's a high failure rate. There were 12 Felinids (Cat People) produced over the various sets of attempts (generations), and only 8 remain alive. Even with "stable" ones, once they go past 25, there's rapid genetic degredation (an example given is a 19 year old Anthropomorph as healthy as a 19 year old Human. A 28 year old Anthropomorph as healthy as a 56 year old Human)He could well have produced Minotaurs, but they all ended up dying off and they haven't been revisited. The Anthropomorphs and Abominations do have RPG rules associated with them, but are designed to be run in Classic or Alpha Strike as well.
>>98916463I've done some more reading of it, and they are designated as Clans because Mareaux is from the Dark Caste, and due to other information, one recruited by the Wobbies. They aren't Clan Exclusive units (Abominations are listed as N/A because they are world exclusive, Anthropomorphs are "All", and Critters seem to have a typo), but the guy in charge of the research was still a Clanner in some capacity and working a bit solo when he first made them, so...

If you want a variant of a mech to use clan tech that should theoretically be hard to get ahold of, it'll just happen with enough frequency to warrant a whole new variant of the mech. The way they explain stuff like this away is that warehouse of gear get captured and that supposedly is always enough to feed an entire industrial base worth of equipment needs for new mechs for at least a good long while. For example when they brought the Viper back, it's because some FWLers dusted off an old warehouse full of binary lasers so they looked for a reason to use them. A Viper uses at least two at a time. You'd think a warehouse would have like idk, maybe 20, maybe 100 of whatever weapon inside especially a big mech weapon, but the writers constantly use this kind of excuse to basically mean an infinite supply of a weapon lol

But say you do get into range...You are either in a Melee brawl where can deal 40 damage in an Alpha Strike with the Heavy Mediums and additional 16 from a kick, while your opponent (using the Atlas example) can deal 20 with its Melee and will generally have a ton more armaments (even Succession Wars models can hit you with an AC/20, an SRM 6, and 4 Mediums for 46. Other models get a lot better). If you don't stick around for melee, you are now out of position and need to spend a turn getting back to a useful one. You can get some good repositions, but you can also get stuck into a pretty poor one and lose a lot of the initiative a charge could provide you.
>>98917560Also you need to have a good run-up for max TMM ending in the target's hex, which is not guaranteed.
Also you want to buy piloting 3 or 4 on anything that wants to make a lot of physical attacks which is fone for cheap units but not for 2800 BV ones. A good example would be that I could buy a Falcon hover tank with a 3 skill pilot for about 800 BV and it can zip around harassing stuff with missiles and a laser until later in the game or after the front gets shot up and declare a 30 or 40 point charge that does all of its damage to the legs.
>>98917560In top of that the charger has to make a PSR roll at +2 to not fall
>>98917560Ok i missed the part where charge damage gets split into 5 point groupings
>>98917515Updating the general Periphery Realm rollchart for charts made after so they can be used in the future. Similarly updating the Record Sheet for the various ideas that anons posted about. That's all mostly on my end, but I'm also building out a set of roll charts that indicate how stable the realm was at various times post the Founding Era. Everything we rolled up feels about Jihad Era, so those stability rolls will give a general idea of the then-current situation, what things were previously like during FedCom Civil War, as well as out into the Republic Era, Dark Age, and out to IlClan.
>>98917484Call me crazy, but if I'm paying 2815 BV for a fast mech with 4 clan improved heavy medium lasers, an cerml, and a targeting computer, I'm not going to spend the whole game trying to engineer an improbable, high risk scenario and keep my guns out of range. I'm using my speed and armor to get behind somebody who looks important and blasting them point blank up their ass with a potential 47 damage alpha strike. The point of having both masc and a super-charger isn't to use them together, it's to alternate using them to keep the chances your knees from exploding minimal.
>>98917622Charging is more for knocking enemies off cliffs or into other enemies that can fall off cliffs.
>>98917693Or into lava, or into water if they have exposed structure, or into the rare bottomless hole, or even just off the map entirely.
>>98917693>>98917729Or just against an enemy with weak armor or exposed sections. Sandblasting isn't great against tons of armor, but not everything has tons of armor left. Hitting them with 8+ groups of 5 damage can fish a lot of crits.
>>98917795But not with a 2800 BV assault I find that price point wild, you could easily get 2 good IS mechs for that price
>>98917693Charging turns small targets inside out.
>>98917955Yeah, but so does standing next to them with a bunch of clan lasers and 16 points worth of melee attack.
>>98917635Could we create a RAT for them? It doesn't have to be a huge d1000 table. We could just come up with a 2d6 spread for each weight class based off of local production, engine refits, and salvage from nearby enemy nations. We can also decide what their weight class ratios would be. 30/40/20/10 is usually standard, but I imagine they would have more heavy mechs due to their factories and do more refitting of light mechs. Probably a lot less assault and below average medium. My first pass guess would be something like 35/20/40/5.
>>98917635Also, do you think you could repost the relevant documents that are created for it. I only saved this one. Mainly curious about the faction diplomacy breakdowns were again.
I am kinda mad you changed your minds on the 2/3 Archer. Ngl.
>>98918356I think we could still make Namekian Supremacy variants. ARC-NS. They could be for the mechs that have their engine destroyed in battle but are otherwise okay so they end up getting a 140 Engine replacement.Wait. Archer? Just double checked. We have Catapults and Warhammers, not Archers. It still stands with a 130 engine for desperate Catapult refits.
>>98918168>Make a homebrew RAT for the Periphery realm>It's nothing but the methhead designs from the mech industrial complex thread
>>98918356>>98918454This is what I've come up with as possible low end refits for the mechs.>While the Namekian Supremacy has factories that are capable of making fully functioning Warhammers and Catapults, they are not always capable of keeping up with the demand for spare parts. What the Namekian Supremacy does have however is an excess of 130 and 140 rated engines. Mechwarriors who find themselves in possession of a Catapult or Warhammer will often opt to install one of these lower rated engines instead of going on a very long waiting list for an appropriately sized engine. While this greatly effects the mobility of these heavy mechs, is does free up significant amounts of tonnage for refits.CPTL-NS>2 Jump Jets are removed since they can no longer be supported by the smaller engine. The remaining 2 are left intact for emergency maneuvers.>Extra armor is added to make up for the lack of mobility since the mech is expected to take more hits.>2 SRM4s are added to the torsos with 1 ton of ammo for them to provide additional firepower against enemies that close in. 2 rear facing Medium Lasers have been installed to the CT in order to deal with light mechs that are likely to get behind it.>2 Heat Sinks have been added to help deal with the extra heat that will be generated by the new weaponsWHM-6-NS>With the Catapult refit, there's often an excess of Jump Jets. In light of this, 2 Jump Jets have been added.>Several tons of extra armor>3 extra heat sinks>A 2nd SRM6 and a 3rd small laser have been added for extra firepower.
>>98918236The only other one would be the roll charts, which need updating anyway since more charts got made since its creation. One you have saved will also be updated because of two big reasons>Misc is going to be turned into Worlds because that clearly needs all that space rather than being crammed up in General>Fucked up the recall of what the Vanu were called. They are the Sovereignty, not the Supremacy. That name change also makes more sense for the Namek as people were fluffing it out.>>98918168With 2d6 ones...might be able to squeeze in three if the Misc being turned into Worlds is shrunk a bit. One for Mechs, one for Aerospace, and one for Other, maybe? I'll have to experiment with formatting a bit after I take a nap.We probably want to rig up a 1d6 page for this eventually, especially to cover customs like >>98918557 and such a page would allow for more detailed RATs, I'm just trying to work out a 1 page summary that someone could look at and get a ton of info real quick.
>>98919013MUL can auto generate a RAT for you if feeling a bit lazy? Can then do a special one at a later date?

>>98919245Q&A:-Any news of Strength of the Pack 2 and the Wars of reaving novels? John has part 2 in hand, John is aiming at Q1 2027 for release of Strength of the Pack 2. Wars of reaving is still being worked on, the authors are working hard but the scope of the project is massive and hard to fit into three novels-Where is my Blue Star Irregulars/Scorpion Seeker novel? John loves the idea but he ran it past Loren and he was less enamoured of it.-Any more Shadowrun/BattleTech crossover stories on tap? It's unlikely it'll ever happen, but John was recently made aware of the Virtual World novel, and it was written by Shadowrun stalwart Nigel Findley. John doesn't know if it was cleared when they did all the Shadowrun books with his estate and if it was he could reprint it.-Can we get a rough list of 2027 releases, especially spine novels? Yes, but John needs a little time to pull it together. The list should be ready by the end of the year-If I were to take a scenario and make it into a story, where would I send it to make it real? Submit it to Shrapnel, though they discourage stories based directly on your games as they tend to be aHave there been discussion of a Shrapnel-style production for Leviathans, Shadowrun, Voltron etc? A little but nothing solid. John and Bryn have discussed a Leviathans one at least.
>>98919249-How do you filter for AI submissions? Phil could answer better. John isn't sure if they use any software but most fiction is easy to spot, especially in a specialised IP like BattleTech.-Is the Core Box still on-track for the 11th? It should be-Will the fiction link to Loren's hints of a big event or will it be more freeform? Fiction will tie into said event, yes, but they can't say any more now.-When can we expect the Blood of kerensky audiobooks? John needs to chase up with the reader-B&N exclusives don't seem to show up with distributors in the UK because they're not tagged as new when they go off exclusive. Rem will raise it with Paul.-When will we get IndustrialMechs? Good question, but John doesn't have an answer
Nimitz carrier: about 100k tons (metric) loadedBehemoth: 100k tons, can't make planetary landingsOverlord: 9.7k tons, 36 giant robotsAre dropships more styrofoam than even styrofoam mechs?
>>98919464Yes.The Behemoth-class DropShip has a density of 15.75 g/L, which is on the lighter end of styrofoam.
>>98919502Btw Overlord is 13.1
>>98919464The Nimitz is three times longer than an Overlord and about the same length as a Behemoth.
