SPIRIT CONSCRIPT: AGE OF THE BEAST

>CYOA Link

>Rules
Overpowered Potential is available/recommended.

>Concept
The Wheel Turns.

The Chimerae come for the City Between. Already they have devoured the Border Wilds, Limbo and the Tribelands. Next the ravening horde comes for the inner districts, promised a meal of a million souls.

Already some of the finest masters and sages have fallen to the tide. The Dynasties struggle with power vacuums, Yudi and Yama slumber and ambitious Aura-users seek to utilize the chaos - transcending their stations and forging new orders that will stand the test of time.

Also, is the little brain icon supposed to be character difficulty? If so, I'm surprised Belladonna turned out to be the easiest one, I would have expected it to be Lorus considering all his movement and survival tools. That damn cocoon...

I'm so tired of this man. Making builds for possible Fate runs. I'm not really into FT, and SC seems like a stillbirth, so this seems like a more productive and fun use of my time. Hope the FT anons have fun though!

The recent announcement that Worm is getting a comic book adaptation makes me interested in another Worm run sometime in the future, though PA was recent enough that I'm not sure how interested anons would be in more superhero stuff.

What about you?

Aside from the FT crowd doing their thing - and God bless them for it - this place is dead. We've had movement even recently with PA, and even got good OC in Dark City and Harry Potter.

There's got to be something that can be run to get anons back and creating again, and historically, Spirit Conscript, Worm, and Naruto did well. We've had one be a stillborn, but the other two are still there.

That or we try something new that will likely fail.

Damn you work fast. Good to see you made it in time.
It was very fun, mostly lighthearted, with a twist at the end. Good to know that Laurie is scared of ghosts. I also found it very funny that the scariest thing in the library was probably Aldrich without even needing a costume, his normal look illuminated only by his magic and stray flames already looks out of a horror movie. The little mystery at the end was a nice touch.

Lorus doesn't like sweets, so he wouldn't have any (still edible) sweets in his room. In that time he closed the door he most likely would teleport around to pick them up from somehere else, leaving compensation behind, just for this. He wouldn't want to make the kids sad after all.
>>
>>98903324
Thanks.
>thought it would be more interesting if I started producing more moments of her cool and composed self from the past between her and Megalo Fin
For this I wanted a more lighthearted intro with a general idea of what's happening, but I was planning on having more serious moments later too. An actual "duel" of sorts for one, when Lorus is more isolated. But of course it would be cool to see from the source too, her appearing more dignified and confident in a less desperate way. She's also more used to social manipulation thant most of the guild, that's another part were she can shine as very competent, there is much to explore about serious Bella too.

Nah, that's int/wis. I added that attribute to compensate for builds that lack firepower and lean more on brainpower, to make things seem fair. In gameplay terms, I guess that translates to how many utility moves a character has and how effective they are, outside of straight damage.

Yes, kind of. It would be where he gets used to killing while also remembering that he's done it. When he goes psychotic from magic overuse he has no problem killing, but he also doesn't remember doing it. For the sake of the "duel" that would be the progression, of course it wouldn't directly transfer to a sudden willingness to kill other people afterwards, but he would start feeling significanly less guilty about say, cutting off an arm or two. He may even learn how to use a sword during it, because he doesn't actually know how to do that. He carries one for a different reason.

I'll contribute to SC when other anons have genuine interest to it. I'm pretty sure other anons feel the same way so some of you better start discussing about the MP and we'll start appearing out of nowhere. And no, I'm not going to be the one to start anything.

Why? That would be the quickest way to prove that you are right and that there are some anons still interested in SC. If you are unwilling to start the conversation how do you expect others to start it for you? Your post doesn't have much credibility if you don't want to take the first step.
>>
>>98910806

Crown is super fucking mechanically complex to play considering she has entirely unique systems among 90% of the cast thanks to Black Arts and Curse moves. Not to mention how much movement there is in Shadow arts. If you see someone play her right she'll lock you in an infinite combo that drains all your stats and leaves you feeling hopeless but more often she kinda just randomly throws out moves.

You basically can't do damage right away because of how much ramping she has from curses, and dark arts have long windups but do a ton of damage. But if you can get someones defense shattered and then land a 3x damage move to chunk their health and send them flying through the stage wall into another level it feels great. Especially if you can perform the shukuichi into followup melee.
>>
>>98911761
Compare and contrast with someone like Lottie whose main move is 'Punch' into 'Punch Harder' who relies on just chip damage to slowly win the battle of attrition through one of the few regens available in the game and buffing herself every time you try to maintain distance so you can't just outrange her.

We had almost 50 builds in our 2024 FT run. I can't believe it, this time around we've got a measly 12, and I thought that was normal before looking at the past...

Y'know, I think star dust apocalypse would be a cool mp. It has a lot of room for build variety, and the worldbuilding that's present is intriguing. The downsides are that it's not the best balanced with a lot a choice redundancy/superiority, and that there is a lot more unexplained vague worldbuilding than there is established facts. Still, I think that leaves room for creative writing. There's plot for the plot munchers and fight for fight faggers...ah, one can dream.

Doesn't really make a lot of sense changing up the era. Each scenario is different because of the timeframe and their points are relatively balanced because of it. Changing the year kind of defeats the purpose as we're skipping past all sorts of important events.
>>
>>98912609
There just isn't enough interesting options imo. Magic is pretty limited, and so are the Development Abilites. Only Skills have a pretty decent selection. Also the whole level thing will always be an issue because if builds aren't of similar caliber it's really hard to go on the same type of quests, since even a single level is almost insurmountable to the previous one and you need to be a genuine freak prodigy with some cheat to make up the difference.
>>
>>98913844
I think he means having the golden age happen in the modern day instead of doing gestation with golden age point pools
>>

The problem is the higher level builds are also probably cheating prodigies so it doesn't help as much
>>
>>98913844
>Changing the year kind of defeats the purpose as we're skipping past all sorts of important events.
How many anons do you think actually care about any of that? Let me remind you that most of the anons that want to play worm never actually read worm. And some of them actively hate worm. Messing up canon is the least of their worries, and for some it's the goal.
>>
I knew the Wormfag was an unironic Wormfag. My hatred grows.
>>
>>98912958
>I think star dust apocalypse would be a cool mp.
Me too, that's why I bring it up once in a while. I even have half a build ready. But before starting something we should come up with a bit more details about it. Like being part of a team or a specific region of space we operate in.
>>
>>98913400

It was first brought up as a celebration for a new comic or somethig, it was pretty clear already. Also, we always had canonfags pushing canon even in runs where we don't have it, for many things, but especially worm, and city for some reason.
>>
*blows up your MP*
>>
Star Wars would be cooler and playable if it was about giant robots that could blow up planets
>>
>>98914028
That sounds like a reasonable goal. Supposedly the cast would already have a reason to team up for the sake of combating harbingers. Unless you were basing the idea of a team in another context. As for a region of play, since there aren't any real named areas to work with, would we just make up a star system or something and say all campaigns are approximately occurring in the same time and place there? Maybe a couple star systems?
>>
>>98914057
as if the regulars are any good, with their green reddit quips and phrases. If they produced anything of value, there wouldn't be anons coming in just to fuck with them.
>>
>>98914429
>Unless you were basing the idea of a team in another context.
No, I didn't want to completely overwrite the setting. But the Harbringers are everywhere and space is vast, it was more about making a unit of sorts with the builds in it. Still the same premise but just enough reason for the involved anons not to follow the natural instinct to scatter to the most remote corners of fuck off nowhere.
>As for a region of play, since there aren't any real named areas to work with, would we just make up a star system or something and say all campaigns are approximately occurring in the same time and place there?
That's what I meant. Come up with a couple systems so anons aren't on the other side of the galaxy and have a reason to interact. Either option by itself could be enough of a reson to stick with each other, a team wouldn't necessarily need a reduced play area because they all move at the same time so we can just assume the others are close. The reduced play area on the other hand also works by itself, even if less well, since the points of interest would be the same. Having both seems like a good way to have actual interactions. Combined with the Wavelenghts of the cyoa it's a pretty good hook.

Of course we don't need to come up with the whole map in advance, a couple planets and a home base of sorts should be enough to start. Something like "Arcadia, last bastion of humanity on the frontier" a space station situated in a moderately remote system, one mostly destroyed but with signs of reconstruction on various planets in the form of scattered settlements.
>>

>>98913862
>Magic is pretty limited
And that’s a bad thing how? Limiting mages to only three spells per mage is one of the only good things about the setting. It prevents mages from being too good in too many areas. They’re specialized and their spells are potent.
>>
>>98914988
Well I meant more of the actual Magic choices. Being limited to 3 magics is actually fine because its not like we're really able to afford more even if we could, but the selection of magic is pretty mediocre. Less than half actually are chosen because the most picked spells can probably do their job better, not many people actually care about casting time, especially when running complementary magic abilities.
>>

Should I use the cheat code to unlock the rest of the cast, or do they remain shrouded in mystery forever? The art's already finished for all of them aside from Leopold.

If you take Metamagic the variety is crazy
>>
>>98915049
I mean theres a reason why its the most busted option, wasn't going to bring it up because I don't think its quite fair having an option that can turn your 3 spells into 9 spells simply by tuning their strength, not even counting the combinations you could pull off with it. With it you become one of the strongest magic users in history, without it you're pretty much hinging on a couple really good spells. Granted, some of them can simply be that good to put you in the history books anyway, but the average difference is enormous. I don't think needing people to take the same option to have variety is necessarily fixing the issue.
>>
>>98915062
>I don't think its quite fair having an option that can turn your 3 spells into 9 spells
That’s not what’s busted about it. Just going by its wording it should allow you to create new spells entirely. Those nine spells don’t include combination spells or inventing new uses for the spells.

But is it any more busted than the elf cunt who can literally steal/learn ANY spell if she sees it happen first?
>>
>>98915074
she can only copy elf spells (spells of her own race)
>>
>>98915003
>Well I meant more of the actual Magic choices.
Grimoires exist. You can make your own custom spells with that.
>>98915074
>But is it any more busted than the elf cunt who can literally steal/learn ANY spell if she sees it happen first?
Only if it was cast by an elf, it doesn't work on other races.
>>
>>98915062
>I don't think needing people to take the same option to have variety is necessarily fixing the issue.
Take the multiplayer option and “metamages” will become the new elite type of mage that all other mages are jealous of
>>
Danmachi is just a bad setting so of course it has a bad cyoa.
>>
>>98915088
>You can make your own custom spells with that.
Is that really custom or is it tailored to the individual? I always thought taking a grimoire was like a surprise box. You’re guaranteed an awesome spell, but you don’t know what it is.
>>
>>98914805
Wasn't baiting. SC has way more options.

>>98914833
But I guess if I was you got got.
>>
>>98915100
I mean, lore wise yes, it's a loot box. But in practice for someone playing the cyoa it's essentially a custom spell, it's not like you can open a real grimoire and see what comes out, you still need to come up with it yourself.
>>
>>98915103
>SC has way more options.
How is that a good comparison? You want every single cyoa to have the same variety as SC? That's retarded.

>>
>>98915231
>I don't think it's a very well balanced cyoa
Define "balance".
There are two balance issues that plague cyoa, bad point pricing and the one true build.
Bad point pricing is self explanitory.
One True Build happens when one build is objectively better than all others.
SC definitely has the former, but it's one of the few that Doesn't have the second issue.
>>
>>98915219
Crazy thing is I actually was very interested in SC but people stopped talking right after I started crafting. Either way, what's up with you guys always going to extreme takes?

>>
>>98915272

I mean I'm down with that. As in, with exactly what you said. Call a space station some sort of military frontier where there are tons of freelancers as well as conscripts working together to fight ungodly abominations. Do we need more specificity than that? I'm not good with names so I'll have to leave that to another anon.

>Having both seems like a good way to have actual interactions.
I will admit it does sound a bit restrictive having set teams as opposed to contextual alliances but I know some players do love to factionmaxx.

>>
>>98915255
>Crazy thing is I actually was very interested in SC but people stopped talking right after I started crafting.
I also like SC, but I didn't make a build because by the time I could the thread already stopped talking about it. Out of all the sudden deaths of MPs this one was the most sudden. I would honestly play it if discussion started up again, but posting a build in this situation feels like it's doomed to fail.
>I like SC, it's cool. I like SDA, it's cool. They both have their own merits.
That's my point. What does it matter if it has less variety than SC when it's a different genre? They appeal to different tastes, you can like one or both or neither, they are different. And even stuff in the same genre can be different just because of the setting.
> I would do FT but I just don't know enough about the verse to perform well in that MP.
Just like worm, like 80% of people that play FT didn't actually watch FT. It's a pretty simple setting. I'm pretty sure like half of the people writing for this run openly said they didn't watch it.
>>
>>98916148
Builds can't die anon. But if you look at the Wavelenghts at the start there is specifically the PvP one, so if you want to be the guy that keeps picking fights with the rest of the cast the cyoa has that built in.
>>
>>98915400
>Do we need more specificity than that?
Some anons do. I would say we need a bit more detail on the home base and a starting planet. After that we can come up with stuff as we go.
> I'm not good with names so I'll have to leave that to another anon.
As you can see I am horrible with names as well, but names aren't important. What we really need are enviroment, culture, population, threats, the stuff we actually interact with. So we can just come up with the concept and leave the naming to someone with a better naming sense.
>I will admit it does sound a bit restrictive having set teams as opposed to contextual alliances but I know some players do love to factionmaxx.
It's not like I really like the unit thing either. But it's less that anons love factions and more that anons tend to drift apart unless they are all in the same chesive group. Coming up with reasons for our whacky strange oddballs to interact is a lot easier if they are somewhat forced to, otherwise anons don't want to bother to come up with reasons. Contextual alliances can be fun, but anons don't want to come up with that context each time.
>>
>>98916474
>Builds can't die anon.
I'll prove you wrong, but only if FT stays here for longer than expected, I'll give my build a gruesome death.
>>
>>98916143
None of the MPs we have are only about that. FT has criminal mages and even an evil guild. SC has a lot of factions and even if they are on the same side it doesn't mean they never fight. And Stardust has rogue riders and criminals taking advantage of the chaos. And all settings have crazy bastards that side with the monsters.
>>
>>98916547
Ok, that's not what I meant. I'll rephrase that. You can't kill another anon's build without consent. Of course you can kill your own build, but you can't hunt down the builds of other anons in a way that results in death unless the anon is ok with it. And anons are almost never ok with it, because why would they? If they lose the piece they can't play anymore.
>>
>>98916567
Just make another build?
>>
>>98916570
No, why should I? I like that one, I don't want to play with another caharacter.
>>
>>98916570

>>
>>98916589
>They only had one good idea to start with
Have you ever heard of emotional investment? Creativity doesn't really matter when that comes into play. You can come up with endless and objectively creative builds, but they are all worthless if the person that made them doesn't care about them. And if you don't care about a build why would you care about the MP or stories it's part of?
>>
>>98915006
I doubt we will ever see all of them if the requirement is for them to write. If you lower the unlock condition to a certain level of interaction in the thread maybe they will unlock naturally, just maybe.
>>
>>98916567

I think this counts as implicit consent, and falls under the "almost" clause too. It's definitely not a universal rule and only applies to you.
>(If they only get off-screened I'm gonna lose my shit and write a response writefag killing off their build instead.)
And then get it declared non canon because they didn't consent to it. So you wated everyone's time, and your own.

Don't underestimate the pleasure of sci-fi fantasy. Plus the way I see it, the spells are more there to accentuate the other characteristics of a build with them only being a focal point if you choose.
>>
>>98917897
Yeah, but you get to that zone where theres so much chocolate in the peanut butter it starts to blend together, you know? Like, I enjoyed Mass Effect back in the day and it had all kinds of wizard spells, but it'd be nice to do something with a stronger delineation between the sci fi and the kung fu anime things.

Maybe it's all academic but I like when the impossible feats are performed via impossible science rather than impossible willpower.

>Yeah, but you get to that zone where theres so much chocolate in the peanut butter it starts to blend together, you know?
Precisely!
>I like when the impossible feats are performed via impossible science rather than impossible willpower.
I feel like there's a deeply philosophical comment to make here about where the difference between those lies. Any how, while I do get the point, I think it's worth adding that the mana and spellcasting thing isn't really explained in origin. I kinda assumed that mana was just an energy and "spells" were just a way to manipulate it. That is to say mentally I flavored it to be impossible science, but I can understand why that would still be too outlandish to a someone more partial to sci-fi than fantasy.
>>

God's honest truth, if it wasnt for the guy who screeches about spaceships for whatever reason I'd be down to play it. Something not anime/eastern would be refreshing. Even with the magic spells.

>if it wasnt for the guy who screeches about spaceships for whatever reason I'd be down to play it
Why would that guy be a problem? Spaceships aren't even an option in the cyoa so it shouldn't trigger him.
>>
>>98918218
We have to be the most pussy ass general on the board.
>>
>>98918252
You can pretend that being insensitive is a good thing as much as you want, but it doesn't change the fact that anons are tired of the constant shitposting and insults, and that's making them leave.
>>
>>98918252
It is what it is man. And what it is is fewer anons.
>>
>>98918251
Well, what I was getting at is that I'd like to play the complete adventure in addition to the expansion so that I could have a small spaceship. Which would presumably trigger him.
>>
>>98918252
We're on course to be the *emptiest* general on the board, jackass.
>>
>>98918269
But it's not a complete adventure. This one is completely separate.
>>
>>98918269
Just get one. Be the designated pilot. That guy only cares about spaceship fights, as long as you don't start bombardind planets and plasma cannoning builds on foot he can't say anything.
>>
>>98918279
My bad, never mind then. It looked like an expansion pack.
>>
>>98918323
Does that mean you don't like it as a standalone? Or that you don't want a spaceship anymore?
>>
>>98917431
>It can't be Helena because she'll be taking care of the defeated villain.
It'd be funnier if it was.
>>
>>98917431
You could go by process of elimination. Who hasn't beat her up yet? That would be Yen-ti, Lorus, and Laurie (on a technicality, she keeps being present but it's always someone else to beat Belladonna and rescue her) Leapold is not part of Megalo Fin.
>>
>>98918457
>>98917431
with Laurie it could be Taurus beating her up instead, she hasn't shown up yet
>>
>>98918400
Being standalone doesn't bother me. I guess the simplest thing would be to say I'd like to do both of them rather than just the one? Have the dude from apocalypse and the spaceship from the other.

Even in an entirely different world for an entirely different set of reasons, Marak is still retarded. How unfortunate.

>Biography
Marak was part of the rare first incarnation of Slayers that lived in the age when creatures as Dragons and Gods actually walked or flew across the earth, and one of the even rarer few to live long enough for the magic flowing through his body to fully transform him into something far beyond human.

Now Marak travels aimlessly covered in the cloak of his metallic wings, a twisted embodiment of Iron, both draconic and divine. While his “transcendence” has granted him the unfathomable might of the beings whose blood he once bathed in, his very being has become noticeably and unsettingly inhuman to any “lucky” enough to lay their eyes upon his visage.

Asides from his name, whether Marak was a noble hero or a ruthless monster has been lost both to history and his own memory. Older than most civilizations that he wanders into, Marak’s normally reclusive behavior that has hidden him from the spotlight of civilization has changed dramatically as more and more metal has been dug from the earth and repurposed in a new industrial age of “progress”. Now Marak’s more animalistic instincts are guiding him towards the scent of what could be perceived as nothing but a banquet of food set before him.

I've only posted the first art and the character bio. I reiterate the only thing I will be that shameless about is a DxD run.

I think what he means is that he didn't post that.

>>98919489
I DON'T BELIEVE HIM
I MUST THROOOOOOOOOW SHIIIIIIIITTTT!!!!
>>
>>98919224
So he's a Dark Souls boss now? He and Lorus switched backstories.
>>
>>98919224
>Magic Level
>High Mage
Anon, that's not how it works. Even if we assume you dumped all remaining unspent points into other magics you don't get to the High Mage power level. In fact with 17 points you don't even get to Wizard Saint. He's S-Class at most.
>>
>>98919511
Less Dark souls boss and more wandering caveman with a penchant for eating metal. I just got done re-watching Season 2 of Baki Hanma: Son of the Ogre before making the build so he's very inspired by Pickle lmao
>>
>>98919525
He said he's retarded, he's a bum who thinks he's a High Mage
>>
>>98919530
Wait, does that mean he's even more retarded than he used to be? Can he even speak?
>>
>>98919555
>even more retarded than he used to be?
Yes and no. His intution and emotional intelligence is FAR better, likely even """genius""" level or far above average. But in terms of communication...good luck with that.

>can he even speak
he can gesture and grunt. It's good enough.

>Laurie & Taurus
I'd rather Taurus's first appearance come from Laurieanon, it'd be more impactful that way, and I don't have much reference for Taurus's voice anyway.
>Lorus
Belladonna's confrontation with Lorus will have to wait. Lorusanon is already planning it, so I'll leave their eventual face-off to him.
>Yen-Ti
This makes sense. Belladonna would be a peripheral annoyance to his single-minded pursuit, but being part of Megalo Fin means contributing to the guild driving off her sabotage and assassination attempts too.
>>98919386
>Marak
Megalo Fin seems to be the festive type of guild that holds banquets often, so Marak could drop by now and then? Or maybe he's already a member, and his whole reason for being there is satiating his ravenous appetite. I can see Belladonna ruining one of their banquets, which would enrage Marak, an oversight on her part for not accounting an ancient being that's lived for centuries. Well, you can hardly blame her. Nobody expects an old entity of great power to just show up out of nowhere. But I don't know much of this version of him so I'm kind of hesitant, but we could discuss about this.
>>
>>98919589
>old entity of great power
Well he's only Strong so I'm sure she can beat his ass, it will at least be extreme diff
>>
>>98919589
While I didn't advocate for this, I might as well use this to explore a hypothetical (read: make some new shit up about the character on the spot.)

I would say that nu-Marak isn't really prone to getting "enraged" like his other self. Old Marak had the mentality of a traumatized child, while this one much more emotionally detached from all the time he's been alive and his literal lack of humanity.

Though from what I read she does use metal knives. So maybe he just sniffs out high quality metal on her, and Belladonna has no clue why suddenly the big ass metal gargoyle is coming at her.
>>
>>98919618
Anon, Belladonna is meant to suffer. She will never win.
>>
>>98919636
Okay, I'll include Marak in my next writefag then. How does he fight? What does he think of Belladonna if he's even capable of thinking at all?
>>
>>98919671
Ok then? thx ig

>How does he fight?
Against someone like Belladona? He's just gonna walk at her and try to yoink the knives and om nom nom, and if she runs then he'll just fly at her and do the same. If it takes a while then he might try to grapple her to get at the knives. Overall he's not gonna try to kill or even injure her unless she manages to get a stab in past his scales, and even then he's just gonna punch her real hard rather than any big boy magic.

>What does he think of Belladonna if he's even capable of thinking at all?
Asides from the knives, he's defo gonna smell all the blood on her, concluding that she's some sort of killer. Though that's just a curious observation, he won't really care all that much.

As for his cognitive capacity? While he's not gonna have any long internal monologues, he is still well within human intellect. Anything he does say in his head would be short and straight to the point. "She's a killer." "She smells of blood." "Good Metal Knives." "She's not a threat"
stuff like that.

She always carries a large case packed with metallic weapons inside (pic rel) ignore the thighs. I guess that much concentrated metal would read like a glaring heat signature to him, he'd be drawn to it like a moth to a lamp. If Marak gets a feast on that Belladonna would be absolutely livid.
>>
>>98915003
>Less than half actually are chosen because the most picked spells can probably do their job better
In general I really hate when cyoas force readers to choose things to the detriment of build variety. But this is only a bummer if you’re multiplayer.
>>
>>98919772
>ignore the thighs.
Never!
Also, what is the sauce? Google is retarded now.

If you're curious where I got the faceclaim for this build, it's Maysia Kwo from Fate, I've also been using Mina Ha from Deadlock as well since they look alike.
